12.XX.2024 He wasn’t too sure whether or not he was nervous or if he just had something bad for lunch. Either way Kyle was sure that he was going to get something good out of meeting with Grey. In the past these meetings have gone one of two ways, lots of productive note taking or the typical Grey and Kyle shenanigans of their youth. For Kyle, although he was here to get work done, he now settled on the excitement, because he’d much rather get into some adventure with Grey then take notes on The Bats.
“He should be here soon...” Kyle thought to himself as he sat, one arm on the rest of the bench. He was off the main street where the faded cobblestone was not as well kept as the more trafficked areas. He took a deep breath enjoying the smell of the cold winter air as it filled his lungs. England was quite beautiful this time of year. There were large green pine wreathes hung from many lamp posts and many of the shop fronts were decorated for the Christmas season. Kyle looked around watching the general public go about their day, not noticing the dirty blonde as he observed the hustle and bustle.
He looked down at his watch. “Half past... not much longer now I bet.” He looked up and made a scan from one end of the street to the other, hoping to see that familiar face amongst the crowd. Kyle honestly was ecstatic that he was going to be able to spend today with his closest friend.

@kyle 12.XX.2024 The meeting with Kyle that he was currently walking to was like having a flashback to two years ago – sharing information on Quidditch teams and what he either could or could not write about. The recent internship at the Prophet was where he truly fitted as a recent Hogwarts graduate, the brief six month stint as an Auror trainee having ran its course in that same amount of time. There were people suited for that roll. Grey was not one of them. Law enforcement required a specific kind of care towards the people they served. He simply didn’t care enough about the general populace in that manner. The Aurors were going to be lucky not to have him on the team because it was more than likely going to turn out ugly when it came to actually dealing with people. Grey should have realized that going in but he had to appease all parties involved (meaning his parents and the recruiter that suckered him in with the prospect of turning out better than Claire). Now he was doing his own thing and returning to what he knew best. Which was writing a researching for a newspaper. Even as an intern that made squat in terms of money, he was already happier than he had been at the Ministry.
This meeting had been a long time coming was for a number of reasons. First, his training had dictated he be at the department from dawn ‘til dusk, which hadn’t sat well with him, being the most active at night. The second reason was because there hadn’t been any school Quidditch matches during their final year at school, the majority of his time being consumed with writing about the Triwizard Tournament and the aftermath of it. Despite the outcome of the tournament, the articles he wrote and the interviews he conducted during that time ended up padding his resume greatly and probably ended up being one of the reasons he had his new job. Returning to what he used to do only seemed logical at this point.
Horizon Alley was chosen as the destination for their discussion, which had seemed like a good idea at first. For some reason, Grey had completely forgotten about the holidays coming up, and how that always brought on more crowds to the shopping district. The students weren’t out yet, so at least they had that going for them. After some searching along the main drag of the street, Grey eventually spotted Kyle, the only unmoving body amongst the crowd, standing off to the side of the street. Raising his hand up to try and get his friend’s attention, Grey pushed through the crowd towards the former Hufflepuff. “Been a while, hasn’t it?” he said as he approached Kyle, hand held out for a friendly handshake.

12.XX.2024 The days of staying up late talking about who was going to be taking who to the ball where now just find memories for Kyle. As of late Kyle had been so deep in his work that he hadn’t really taken any time for himself. Being the eldest child of a famous Quidditch player meant that he had a lot of expectations that he had to live up to. He enjoyed always keeping up with these expectations, never one to stray away from a challenge, even when it meant he got physically and mentally burnt out. Luckily for Kyle ever since he had graduated he was able to spend more of his free time with his family and friends. Being able to finally build a better relationship with his sisters and being able to finally reconnect with old friends was exactly what he needed to recharge after a long final year at Hogwarts.
More recently Kyle had been settling into his new role as an professional Quidditch commentator quite well. The combination of his love for the sport and the overall vigor and enthusiasm he approached the job with were a winning combination that allowed him to continually be successful during each weeks games. Arranging a meeting like this with Grey today felt like a lot more to him then just business. Of course Kyle knew that Grey had an aptitude for journalism. It wasn’t so long ago that Kyle was going with Grey on his interviews with students at the tournament. It seemed as though Kyle spent many hours with Grey while he was working on his school paper articles. The two old friends meeting up today truly felt like old times to him.
After reminiscing on the high points of the years past for just a short time Kyle spotted Grey moving through the crowd towards him. With his hand extended Grey gave a friendly greeting to Kyle. Kyle shook his hand and smiled, “It certainly has been!” He was glad that Grey had ended up being able to make it here after all, in spite of the increased amount of traffic and people out and about this time of the season. ”You look good man! Hopefully that’s because you’ve been getting more sleep with this new job. Merlin knows you were not getting enough rest at the ministry.” Kyle had deduced this after Grey had only been with the ministry for a short time. He began to see his best friend less because Grey had been on such as opposite schedule then he had. The genuine concern Kyle had for Grey’s overall health was partially due to his being so overworked and also his being Kyle’s best friend. They say you really only have one true best friend in your life and to Kyle, Grey was that person.

@kyle 12.XX.2024 It was hard not to laugh at the notion of getting more sleep now that he had a different career path. Journalism (and the Prophet) worked on a twenty-four hour basis. If there was a messenger owl pecking at his window at two in the morning telling him to be in the office at three, he was at the office at two-thirty. That hadn’t happened yet, at least not in that fashion, but he had heard the stories of beat writers being sent out in the dead of night because they subject of interest either did something or had news to share. Explaining that to other people always ended up with them making a disparaging comment about how they wouldn’t be able to do it because it’s so ‘unhealthy’ or takes away from their social life. Fortunately the latter was almost non-existent for Grey during the last few months, and the former was never a concern of his. Needing very little sleep to function was probably his number one skill. It was perfect for a journalist.
“It’s only an extra hour or two more than what I had before,” he admitted. “But not having the training program anymore is a godsend.” Waking up and feeling rested had only happened on occasion over the last few months. Only near the end had it really felt like he was starting to get used to it, and converting that over to his new job was easy. As long as his brain was awake and could process what he was reading and writing, the rest of his body could be in whatever state it needed to be in. “What team do they have you attached to this week?” he asked, turning so they could walk to wherever it was they were going. Grey didn’t actually know what the destination was. “I’ve been trying to catch as many games as possible, but they don’t really like the radio blaring in the office at all hours.” Even saying it was for his work (which it was!), didn’t let him get away with it. Having the advertisement jingles stuck in his own head was bad enough that getting it stuck in dozens of coworker’s heads as well would spell doom for his newly minted internship.

12.XX.2024 Kyle was glad to hear that Grey was at least getting more sleep now then he did before the internship he was in. He really hadn’t gotten much of a chance to spend much time with Grey at all since Graduation, so this was really great for him to get to see his best friend again for the first time in a while. ”Yeah man I’m not to sure any sort of training program is easy or fun. Mine certainly wasn’t!” Kyle agreed with Grey on that fact, and when he came to think of it Hogwarts and all their classes didn’t prepare them for the harsh reality of adult responsibility. Harsh.
Either way the best way to get through it was by being great at what you do, and for Grey and Kyle, that wasn’t to hard. ”The Arrows are making a deep run in the playoffs this year, a lot of their ‘home’ games have been out of Liverpool’s Pitch, so that’s not to far from my place. It’s those games in Ireland that really take a lot out of me, especially traveling there on Monday and needing to be back in the office on Tuesday morning.” Kyle smiled. He knew Grey would understand this completely, the two of them certainly shared the busy schedule part between their jobs. As the two of them made their way down the street Kyle stopped at a coffee cart needing something with a bit of caffeine to give him a pick me up would be nice. The warmth that transferred to his fingers while he held the cup was great considering how the cold air was blowing through this part of the alley. ”What do you want man this one’s on me!” He turned to Grey, asking for his order from the drink cart.

@kyle 12.XX.2024 Kyle was right. Training programs weren’t supposed to be a walk in the park. They were designed to weed out those that didn’t have their heart in it. The Auror training program had succeeded on that front. Grey wasn’t about to let the Prophet’s do the same though. He had already been assigned to a reporter, a Beatrice Holmes, for a few weeks, working the Quidditch stint which was secretly his area of interest. How secret that was after interviewing several of the Arrows players depended on how closely Beatrice had been paying attention to him or to his portfolio of articles from the Hogwarts newspaper. While it had been barely brought up during his interview, it was how he had got started during his school days. Writing play-by-plays and post-match interview blurbs was right up his alley. “At least I have experience in writing. That’s a leg up on any of the other interns that have never done this before.” And even the ones that had been under him in the newspaper, his fellow graduates. Grey knew he had more experience in the management aspect of it even if he was a solid six month behind when it came to working at a real newspaper. Time was a manmade construct though, and it had never seemed to slow him down during the early morning editing grinds or late night prints going out.
“Is it the drink or the girls making it tough?” he teased, poking fun at his friend’s inability to get back to work on time. “Because I’ve heard of this new thing called ‘apparation’, and it gets you anywhere almost instantly.” Grey threw a wink in Kyle’s direction as they stopped in front of a drink cart. The former Hufflepuff ordered what looked to be a coffee and then asked Grey what he wanted. Letting out air, he stared at the sign on the front of the cart, as if it would actually influence his decision. “Coffee. Black,” he sniffed, the barista handing over the drink almost instantly. “Thanks. Can’t get through the day without this stuff.” It was almost scary how much he relied on caffeine these days. He thought drinking it during school was too much, and now he couldn’t get through a shift without multiple cups of it. If anything, it assisted in his concentration. A few seconds break of writing to take a sip was enough to think about the piece and then reflect back on it accordingly. And it was probably healthier than snacking all day.
