december 20, 2024 Jamie was coming home. It was an odd thing, to think of Diagon Alley as her home when she had been away for so long. It was even odder to think that Christmas was coming, that time had moved on since the fateful day when she had received a letter from her mother, asking her to talk. Jamie wasn't angry that the world had moved on without her, or even really sad. It was just strange, and if she hadn't been contemplating death recently anyways, she probably would have been drawn into macabre thoughts about what it meant to live, what it meant to die, and what it meant for people to move on without you. None of it was relevant, really, as she stepped through the bricks and into the alleyway - it was just something to churn through her head so she didn't think of other, scarier things. Jamie knew that the world had to move on, but she still wondered if she was missed, and the most terrifying thing would be if the answer was no.
Jamie hadn't wanted to tell anyone to come back until it was a done thing. She was worried that one turn for the worse would send her scrambling for cover again, and then she'd be getting everyone's hopes up for nothing. She hadn't been able to resist sending one last letter, though. She didn't know if Andy had received it, or even if her friend had the time off of work to come see her, but Jamie had hoped. There were many people Jamie wanted to see, of course, but Andy had always been privy to her most private thoughts. Now was no different. So, Jamie waited for Andy to come to her - not for the first time, and hopefully not for the last.

Andy had been scheduled to work during the time that Jamie mentioned in her letter, so she scrambled through the office trying to find someone to cover. Thankfully someone agreed, and she was cleared to not come in. She found herself rushing around her bedroom at the Windsor apartment, trying to find the right thing to wear, stopping every five seconds to check her reflection in the mirror. Why was she so... flabbergasted? This was Jamie for goodness sake. This was her best friend, her closest ally, and someone she really, deeply loved. Why was she panicking a little? It was because Andy, despite denying it, was a perfectionist. She didn't want to disappoint Jamie by not looking like she cared, or by looking too absurd in her dress. She just wanted to be just right - even though she knew that Jamie wouldn't care if she wore a brown, burlap sack. She settled on a black button up, collared shirt with black lace see-through parts throughout, tucked into a pair of dark skinny jeans with her usual black boots. She checked in the mirror one more time before grabbing a pale blue belt and heading out the door. Once in the alley, she quickly moved toward the meeting spot. And there she was. She didn't waste any time, moving forward to wrap her arms around her and giving her a tight squeeze, a laughed escaped her lips. "Hey!"@jamie

Andy was there. It was surreal, after all these months separated, that Andy could just appear in front of her, and Jamie’s heart would start rushing just the same. An explosion of butterflies engulfed Jamie’s stomach, and she smiled. It was the first smile in a long time that had felt real and truly happy, but Jamie didn’t have long to savor it before she was swept into Andy’s arms. “Hi,” Jamie breathed out, pressing her nose into Andy’s neck and inhaling. The familiarity of everything – of Andy’s smell and the arms around her – was enough to calm Jamie. She had been afraid that things would feel different and wrong, but they didn’t. That was a relief.
“I missed you so much.” Jamie was determined not to cry, but it was hard not to get a little bit emotional when confronted with her best friend – her more than best friend, really. Jamie pulled back from the hug, studying Andy intently. “You look good.” Not just healthy, but good good too. Not that that should be the first thing that Jamie noticed, but it was hard not to.

Jamie greeted her, just one small word at first, and just that sound was enough to make Andy sigh. She gave her another tight squeeze when Jamie said she missed her, and nodded in silence for a moment. When they pulled back, Jamie said she looked good and Andy shrugged, giving a faux cocky little smirk. "I try," she joked. She dropped the act and smiled more genuinely, "so do you," she complimented, her hand moving from around Jamie's shoulders to touch the hair on the side of Jamie's face. Not tucking it behind her ear or anything, just playing with a piece of it. "I missed you too, obviously," she finally stated, jumping on saying the sentiment since she hadn't said it back immediately. "And of course you look wonderful too, and I'm not just saying that to copy you," she laughed. @jamie

Jamie chuckled at Andy’s smirk and her joke, relaxing a little in the familiarity of the situation. Andy said she looked good, too, and Jamie felt a blush creep up her neck and onto her face. She hadn’t been paying much attention to her appearance the past few months, but she had tried to look decent for her re-entranced into the wizarding world. It made her stomach flip that Andy had noticed, and Andy playing with the strand of hair by her face wasn’t helping matters. There were some things, Jamie thought, that time just couldn’t change.
“It’s still good to hear,” Jamie murmured. She hadn’t worried that Andy hadn’t missed her, but hearing it still made happiness rush through her. “I wouldn’t mind if you were just saying it to copy me,” she teased. That was another thing that was just nice to hear, especially from someone close to you. Jamie took a deep breath, and let it out. “Wow,” she said after a moment of waiting. She was really here, in front of Andy, and – wow. “So… life. That’s a thing.” Articulation was evidently not Jamie’s strong suit at the moment, but she was hoping Andy would understand.

Jamie said it was good to hear, even if Andy was saying she missed her just after she did. She said she wouldn't mind Andy copying her and Andy chuckled, shaking her head a little in disbelief - disbelief that this was real. She had been.... down lately, but didn't really realize just how bad it was until she felt the opposite here and now. The comparison made it so much more obvious how bad she had been feeling. And, of course, Jamie was the right person to talk to about that. But she didn't want to bring Jamie down on their first time seeing each other... Jamie said 'wow', completely describing what Andy was feeling with that one word. "Yeah. Wow," she agreed. Jamie said more, not really leaning toward an actual topic and Andy laughed, reaching to take Jamies hand. "Come on, walking does wonders for the brain," Andy promised, pulling on Jamie's hand. "Tell me all about your time away. If you want."@jamie

Andy invited her to walk, and there was no way that Jamie could say no to that. She did feel like she needed to move – there was always some part of her that hated sitting still. Apparently, it was something to do with the inner wolf, though Jamie wasn’t much pleased with that explanation. At least she had Andy’s hand in hers; that could make every annoyance and pain more bearable.
When her friend asked about her time away, Jamie really didn’t know what to say. It was all a blurred-together mess of fear and shame and sadness. “I think I learned a lot about what it means to forgive someone,” she said after a long pause. “I thought I was already good at that, but it’s much harder when you have to forgive something that really, really hurts.” Jamie squeezed Andy’s hand gently. She knew what it was like to have parents who, frankly, sucked. “Mostly I just spent a lot of time missing people. Thinking about you. About… what happened before I left.” The kiss, specifically, but Jamie wasn’t so bold as to say that out loud.

Jamie didn't say anything at first, but Andy just waited. She wasn't one to push a topic if Jamie tried to change it, but she was happy that Jamie started to get into it a little. She talked about forgiving, which Andy was not good at and didn't plan on learning to be good at. But she was glad Jamie had found something in that, even if it was forgiving something that 'really, really hurt', as she said. Andy squeezed her hand back, frowning a little at her dearest friend. Jamie said she was missing people and thinking about her and what happened before she left.
They had shared that kiss before Jamie had to go, and the words they said... well, it wasn't something one could just take lately. "Yes, I've been thinking about that a lot too... not the forgiving thing," she smirked, "I don't plan on learning anything about that," she joked... but the statement wasn't really untrue. "I mean I've gone out with a lot of people since you left. But I don't think that changes anything between us, even if I am sort of dating someone," she explained with a shrug. "You're my Jamie and I'm yours, not matter what's outside of this, right?"

Andy had also been thinking about what happened before she left, which was… good. It certainly made Jamie feel less nervous about having brought it up. “It doesn’t change things for me, either.” After all, when she had kissed Andy she had also been sort-of going out with Liona, so it wasn’t like things between them were ever simple. Andy’s words about what they were made sense in the way most things didn’t. They belonged to each other in a way that most people probably wouldn’t understand. Hell, Jamie didn’t entirely understand it, either. She just knew that she loved Andy the way she hadn’t ever loved anyone before and never would love anyone again.
“You’re mine, and I’m yours.” Jamie repeated. “It’s enough for me if it’s enough for you?” She cocked her head to the side, awaiting confirmation. Beyond that, Jamie didn’t know what they were going to do, but… she was okay with that.

Jamie said that nothing changed for her either and Andy smiled softly, giving a short nod. There was no need to mince words OR to over elaborate. Fact was fact. Jamie asked if that was enough for her and Andy nodded, "Definitely," Andy promised. She felt a sadness at the pit of her stomach, though, one that had become a normal thing for her whenever she felt a sense of love and happiness. There was always that underlying force, that harsh stab that reminded her that anything she wanted to give would be only a portion because her cup was only half full. She didn't make any motion to give that away, though. She had gotten incredibly good at hiding it.
"So, the question now is, what will you do now that you're back?" she asked. She wasn't entirely sure all of the plans that Jamie had for her own future now.

Definitely. It was the word Jamie hadn’t been allowing herself to hope for, but once it was said, she couldn’t help the flare of joy deep in her chest. Her position with Andy was something that was almost integral to her being - she needed Andy to be okay, for them to be okay - in order to be okay personally.
Andy asked what she was going to do now that she was back, and Jamie shrugged helplessly. “I probably have some apologies to make, to people I didn’t tell I was leaving.” Jamie sighed. “Other than that... I don’t know. Moving forward?” She shrugged again. She knew she couldn’t go back, which really only left one option. ”I was kind of hoping you could help with that.”

Jamie said she had some apologies to make, which wasn't really a shocker. A lot of people had been in and out of each others lives this past year, and they all ran around doing their apologies. But Andy had always been here, just here. Jamie suggested that Andy could help with her next steps and Andy continued walking down the Alley, Jamies hand still in hers. "Well, there really are a lot of options... like, career wise, mine kind of just chose me, you know? It wasn't hard to imagine myself doing it," it was easy for her to end lives or capture people. Maybe that was a sad thing, but she had accepted that this was her life now and really she was fine with it. Jamie, on the other hand, needed something a little more lively. "I mean.. have you thought about Quidditch at all?"

Andy said there were a lot of options, and Jamie nodded. She had known that from the beginning, and that was why this was so overwhelming – she didn’t want to make the wrong choice. “I’ve thought about it. I mean, I think the Harpies would take me back, if I groveled, but… I can’t help but think maybe that’s not where I’m supposed to be?” Jamie felt ridiculous saying that. Logically, it made the most sense to go back to a job where she was doing something she was good at and making good money doing it, but there was something wrong with that picture – she just didn’t know what. “I’ve been thinking about getting a job at the apothecary, since potions was my best subject in school. Maybe… changing the world for the better? I don’t know.” Jamie was an optimist to her core, but she still couldn’t quite imagine that she would be able to make any worthwhile change in the back of a potions store. Maybe that was the thing, though – it would be hard to make change anywhere. She just had to woman up and do it anyways.

Jamie said that she didn't know if she belonged in the Quidditch world after all, and Andy stewed on that for a moment. She had always expected Jamie to play, but things did change. Andy knew that very well. Jamie suggested maybe doing potions to change the world for the better and Andy cocked her head to the side. "What kind of potion could do that? If you're thinking of making one to give everyone a sunny disposition I think that borders on fascism," she joked, giving Jamie a little squeeze of her hand. "I think that's a great idea, Jamie. I stuck with my best subject in school. Beating people up," she shrugged. Well, most of her bearing was off school grounds but still.

Jamie cleared her throat awkwardly before answering Andy’s question. “Wolfsbane,” she answered quietly. “I mean, the version we have works, but not well. And, you know, it would help people like me.” Jamie shrugged, glad that Andy had said something about giving everyone a sunny disposition. “I don’t want everyone to be the same. That’s just boring.” She enjoyed sunshine, but sometimes a cloudy day was what someone needed. The same was true of people – if everyone was happy all the time, life wouldn’t work as well. “I like to think of you more of an avenging angel,” Jamie said, smiling. “Sounds much more dramatic than ‘my best friend beats people up’.” As far as Jamie was concerned, that was what Andy did: she hurt people up, but only for good reasons.
