 21ST DECEMBER 2024
With Christmas rounding the corner, Bryelle was used to spending most of her Christmases alongside her family, the wild and confident side of herself thrown out of the window by the time she stepped off the train, her parent's presence awaiting her. Ever since enrolling into Hogwarts so long ago, every moment spent with her parents was bleak, quiet and filled with anxiety. She knew the thoughts her parents had, the shame they felt as they would robes and ties with stripes of red in the brunette's luggage. But after receiving an owl from her brother, she couldn't help but feel ecstatic. This year her parents would be no where to be found - except in the Goyle home - and Renard would be picking her up instead. And so the morning of the start of winter break was spent with the Goyle flurrying around her dorm room, magic assisting her to pack her things. Thank God for it.
The train ride itself was quiet, especially since she sat across from a young girl with vivid green eyes and a book in hand. Strangely enough to the Goyle, it was comforting to be consumed with silence - the peace from it relieving her of another Lily-headache for a moment or two. While quiet, Bryelle never realised how long the journey from Hogwarts to King's Cross really was, but nevertheless her eyes peered outside, capturing the fields, the views that surrounded the train tracks with a blink of an eye. Somewhere along the line - something she had no clue how it happened, the Goyle dozed off, awakened by the book reader across from her tapping her arm. She thanked the girl, wished her a good Christmas and followed, off of the train. And as she did so, blue eyes instantly found the face she looked for.
"Renard!" She called out, shaking all signs of sleepiness off her shoulders, stepping off the last step of the train's stairs and running to her brother, her arms opened to pull her brother into her own embrace. The last time she had seen her brother was momentarily during the summer, but even then - the two of them hated spending time with their parents. Being the dumb-wits they were. Even though Bryelle and Renard's relationship as siblings changed as they aged, creating moments when they loved and hated one another, she would still adore him. And most definitely prefer to be with him over their parents. "Can't we just have Christmas at yours? I don't want to see Mum..."
In most families, the father tended to be the one to express disappointment, but in the Goyle family, it was definitely her mother that took that role. Each year was different: Homework not being turned in, grades slipping, the friends she made, but with each year, it included one similar thing. The fact that she wasn't a Slytherin.

12.21.2024 Renard really needed a cigarette. Badly. He kept touching his lips as if there was one stuck between them, the act alone satiating the twitch for a few seconds before it inevitably came back, begging him to light one up. The problem was that he had arrived at King’s Cross way too early. Killing time was a fairly common practice for Renard during the work day, but all of that was out the window once it came to a day off. He lost his sense of time, and the early lunch he had before entering the station was meant to have taken more time than it actually did. Walking through the platform barrier an entire hour before the train was to arrive had him immediately pacing, trying to blow off the steam that he wasn’t expecting to have. In the past, when he had been tasked to pick his sister up from the station, he had typically swung in right on time, grabbed her, and they were out of the crowd in an instant. Their parents didn’t have the time to deal with trivial things, meaning their own two children. Apparently training trolls was more important. Brainless activity is what Renard liked to call the job. They were lucky to have inherited fortunes and were too stupid to burn through it. That meant more for him and his sister once the time came. And in a job like troll training, that could happen at any point time. Renard had always hoped he was called in to clean up that mess.
The blare of the train coming in snapped him from his nervous, cigarette-less state and he was pushed with the crowd of parents and whining preschool children closer to where the students would be let off. He hated going with the crowd flow. Everyone seemed to forget that the platform had been attacked only a few years earlier and that even the security presence then hadn’t deterred it. How they thought the few dozen Aurors here today would do the trick was beyond him. Regardless, the brakes screeched as the engine came to a halt, and within seconds the students were streaming out of their cars. Bryelle stuck out like a sore thumb, taller than most of the students, and a solid inch above himself. Renard didn’t even need to catch her attention because she was already making her way towards him, pulling him into a hug as she got there. “Hey Breeny.”
He almost expected the question she followed up with. There were plenty of times where he dreaded going to his parents’ house. They were miserable creatures, and while their house elves kept everything clean and in order, the mental garbage sent their way by their mum was insane. He fully understood what his sister was trying to get at without actually saying it. “Probably not for the whole break, but I’m sure I can convince them that it’ll be easier to have you at my place than theirs.” He could word it perfectly too – they wouldn’t want a rebellious teenage girl under their roof anyways. She would be exactly like he was upon graduation: moved out and moving on. The only good thing his parents gave him anymore was his inheritance. “Ironic that a troll trains other trolls now, don’t you think?” he sneered as he turned to head through the crowd and out of the crowded platform.

King’s Cross was one busy place that Bryelle loved and hated. She simply loved it when she returned to the platforms, the train almost filled with each student that would be starting their first year or a year up at Hogwarts and the carriage she usually sat in would be waiting just for her. But she simply hated returning to King’s Cross for any kind of holiday. Bryelle knew she had the option to stay at Hogwarts, like other students who didn’t have a choice but to stay or they simply chose to — but she knew she would feel bad in the long run. Especially now, considering Renard was a grown up of his own and definitely far from Hogwarts. Though when she hopped off the last step, with her brother in site, thankfully due to her height — she hadn’t really noticed the number of the families gathered around until her head whipped around at the last minute, when she went to reach out for her luggage that was ever so light this year. She felt bad for him, potentially squashed amongst the other parents and whining children. The Goyle knew her own parents should have been doing this rather than her older brother but she was grateful nevertheless. Bryelle always preferred to see her brother’s face over her mother’s scowls. Thank God their troll training jobs were more important than their children, right?
The nickname Renard had for her had always been a cheesy one, but the brunette had no energy to ever argue about it, so it stuck nicely. Pulling away from the embrace she initiated, the younger Goyle beamed at her brother. It was nice to have the tiniest difference between the two of them, in this case their height: with Bryelle standing just an inch taller — she felt like she had some kind of advantage over him once her growth spurt settled in all those years ago. The response she was given wasn’t exactly one the brunette was hoping to hear, but with the compromise given, the frown that appeared on her lips couldn’t be helped. ”But Renaaaard.” She whined, dragging out his name the same way she would do when the two were younger. ”You know Mum already. She’ll complain about something. My hair being a bit lighter, or the fact I didn’t send anything for Dad’s birthday.” She added, pulling at the strands of her hair as she continued to whine.
But knowing her brother, simply because he raised her more than her parents ever did, her whines probably wouldn’t win him over. ”Can I at least spend today until Christmas Eve with you, then go there? Then after Boxing Day possibly find a friend to stay with? I can’t spend the whole break with them.” And he knew exactly why. Though from his sneer comments, Bryelle found herself quietly snickering, following behind him as the two walked through the crowd and away from the platform. ”Rather ironic how that troll prefers to speak kindly to actual trolls rather than their own children, don’t you think?”

12.21.2024 He unfortunately did know their mother, and his sister’s complaints were all valid. The problem here though, was that she needed to play what he called ‘The Game’, with them. Big G in game. That was what he had done during his last few years of school to satiate their need to control him. It paid off in the end, of course, and he was sitting fat and happy with a well-stocked Gringotts vault. Bryelle was only a few short years away from that as well, and then all they had to do was wait out the remainder of their parents’ lives for whatever was left in their vaults. They certainly didn’t make a lot, being a security troll trainer and janitor, but even then it would be money to his pockets at the end of it. Renard wasn’t even going to give them an elaborate funeral. They didn’t deserve one. At most, a small plot of land in the family graveyard with a couple of unremarkable gravestones.
“Dad had a birthday?” he asked, serious about the question. Not that it mattered because the old man was about as intelligent as a bag of rocks. If that was the case, and he had indeed celebrated his birthday recently, then both of them were going to be in deep water for forgetting about it. Renard knew he would be granted more leniency though, because apparently working at the Ministry was more intensive and time consuming than studying at Hogwarts was. He viewed it as the opposite, but since his parents were dullards, they thought actual work was more difficult than schoolwork ever was. Idiots. “Sounds like we’re in it together then,” he chuckled, tossing an arm around his sister’s shoulder while they walked. “We’ll test the waters. If mum starts going off on you, we’ll leave. They don’t really care in the end.” There had been plenty of days where he had stormed out of the family mansion without much repercussion. As long as he was out of sight for a period of time, his parents figured the problem was done and over with. “They’re of the same ilk, Breeny. It only makes sense.” All his sister had to do was remember that they were better than their parents ever would be. It wasn’t all that difficult.

Being only Sixteen had many downfalls for the brunette. She couldn’t exactly pack up her things and move away in a home to call her own. Though, her choices resorted to staying in Hogwarts during terms and non-term time, she would then never see Renard, the only family member she truly cared for. Being who she was now instead of that young obedient being she once was, keeping the Goyle on a lease to maintain control was simply one thing she refused to allow her parents to do. Most days — mainly the ones when her mother annoyed her most — Bryelle reminded herself she only had two years left of suffering. Technically one and a bit now graduation was closer for the Seventh Years. But being eighteen and graduating was the best thing the Goyle could dream about. And even finding an apartment for herself eventually was…Rather exciting.
Their jobs paired together weren’t the best of roles, especially in terms of money. Bryelle even felt ashamed when their jobs would come up in conversation, comparing her own parents to others. Though, who enjoyed life as a Security Troll Trainer and a Janitor? Only idiots like them would. ”Dad had a birthday.” She repeated, nodding as well. Lucky for Bryelle, she actually remembered — thank Mother — but Renard truly seemed to have no care in the world for their parents. How she loved it. ”Mum’s quite mad I didn’t take the time to get him something. It’s as if I wasn’t studying all year long! Outstandings are truly hard to get.” She shrugged. But the younger Goyle felt her lips tug into a small smile, especially as her brother’s arm rested over her, glad they were rocking the same boat together.
Glad that Renard was open to at least trying to maintain her sanity in that God Forsaken place that people called a home, Bryelle nodded in agreement. ”I hope when I’m older my children don’t hate me the way I hate them.” She murmured, looking down at the tiles of the station as they walked further. Bryelle remembered the days when she would watch her brother leave, scared as she hid behind her mother’s leg but now finally knew his reasons for it. ”Of the same stupidity, joined in marriage and nothing more!” She added. ”Forgive me if I curse five minutes after seeing them.” She added in a mumble. This Christmas was soon to be an eventful one.

12.21.2024 Dad had a birthday. For whatever reason, this conversation wasn’t going away and Renard knew that they hadn’t heard the end of it yet. His sister said as much with her statement about their mum already being angry at her for forgetting. Renard couldn’t even recall the last time either of them had mentioned his birthday. To him it seemed about even now. “Shhh,” he hushed, putting his finger up to his lips, “Don’t tell her that. She doesn’t understand big words.” An awful grin found its way onto his face, the sort that only showed itself when Renard knew he was right about something. Some of his coworkers had come to despise it. It was one of the perks of being somewhat competent at his job.
“You’ll be fine. You know what not to do already. Just don’t be mum and dad.” Renard thought it was a relatively easy concept to follow. Not a lot could be worse than their parents, and everything else would be on the up and up. Bryelle had her head on straight too, so there wasn’t really anything he felt he needed to be concerned about yet. As for him, there wasn’t even an inkling of a thought of children. They were a waste of time, and why would he want to risk passing on his parents’ intelligence to an innocent child?
He laughed as she apologized preemptively for what could be said once they arrived at the family house. “I might beat you to it. Who knows what sort of ridiculous thing they’ll come up with this time?” Only they knew, and even then he wondered they could come up with some of the silly things they said sometimes. Someone had to be feeding them nonsense for it to bubble out in the manner they explained it. Like a dumb muggle believing everything they watched on television or read in a gossip magazine. Utter nonsense ninety-nine percent of the time.
Leading his sister out of the cover of the magical wall hiding Platform 9 ¾, Renard briskly moved them through the station, towards the location set up for safe disapparation. He liked having that around because it made it easier for him to pop in and out whenever he was dropping off or picking up Bryelle. “To my place first then? And lunch after?” he asked as he stopped in the departure zone, waiting for his sister’s response before disapparating the both of them.

THE EVIL GRIN Bryelle held on her lips was met with an un-matching laugh. The Goyle always wondered if Renard’s secret talent — aside from being an asshole — was making jokes, the satire side of it all reflecting from their parents academics and parenting as a whole. The fingers that raised to hush into was reflected by her own fingers, tapping against her lips as if she promised to keep his cruel words a secret. ”It’s awful how right you are.” She told him, feigning a sigh for her parents. That was all they could do whenever Renard or Bryelle threw snide comments in their direction. Sigh, yell about something they didn’t understand or just…Walk away from the situation. It was smart of them to choose the last option.
At the instruction, Bryelle nodded. She was doing her best thus far, ignoring their stupidity within the times they considered best for arguments. Studies were the only thing she could focus on. That and ensuring Lily didn’t wander off like she did at least three times in the day. The Goyle swore if Lily simply paid attention she could be the smartest Gryffindor around. Possibly better than the legacy of her father. Laughing along with him, Bryelle smiled up at her brother. It was surprising, how much of a father figure he really was in comparison to their own father, a man the brunette barely saw because of his stupid job. ”Can’t be worse than the time they considered having one of the house elves as the Wizard upon the Christmas tree.”
It was as if the elder Goyle had read her mind and eagerly she nodded. She wanted to rest for a little, maybe even take a brief nap before the two would head out for lunch. Though, their method of travelling was one Bryelle hated as a whole. Apparating somehow made her feel sick and rather dizzy even performed correctly. She wished Renard would one day get a car. Even if he didn’t need it. ”Yes! I’ve been craving those little sandwiches and caramel ice cream pots from Florean Fortescue Ice Cream Parlour…Or the breakfast menu in the Leaky Cauldron…” Either way, any kind of food would satisfy the brunette right now. She walked closer to him, ready to disapparate with him.

12.21.2024 “Oh god, don’t remind me,” he grumbled, his mouth turning down in disgust. There were a lot of awful things he said and did during his job, but those were all pertaining to wild creatures. Even though the house elves were essentially slave labor (in his parents’ eyes), the family ones were interesting little buggers and Renard did feel for them when they were asked to do the impossible. Acting as a Christmas tree topper was one of the times he really put his foot down, threatening to place both of them in assisted living the first chance he could get. There weren’t any house elves to bully there, and he heard all they served during the holidays was tapioca, which suited their less than flavorful personalities. “If they try to do that while you’re there, please let me know. I’ll toss a few of my old shirts at the poor bastards to let them go if I have to.” The only way to get through to the elder Goyles was with action and harsh, easy to understand words. Taking away their house elves was basically both.
Bryelle said that she had a few places to eat in mind, and he nodded at her choices. Both easy to get to, and more than likely would be empty still by the time they got there. Most families would be busy spending time with their children and giving them a nice, home-cooked meal. Renard preferred to eat at restaurants or order delivery, and his sister was playing into that lifestyle perfectly. “Either is fine. Ready?” he asked as he apparated to his loft apartment, a loud crack reverberating down the hallway that his apartment door was at the end of. A jingle of his keys and an unlocked door later, and they were in, Renard leading a few of his sister’s pieces of luggage towards his spare bedroom. “Since you’ll probably be here more than at home,” Renard called back at her as he continued down the hallways and placed them in an orderly fashion there before returning to the living room and flopping down on his couch.

AT HIS GRUMBLES AND TWIST of facial expressions, Bryelle’s own lips turned up at the corners. The reminder of the poor house elves dwelling in the chaos and problematic motions of the Goyle parents was a funny memory. Tragic for the house elves, but rather hilarious on the young Gryffindor’s side, watching the stupidity of her so-called parents, jump out in action. But the jokes were cut short under Renard’s order, which Bryelle felt thankful for. Though, each Christmas bought a new sort of interesting and stupid memory to recall on as the years went on. Nodding at his request with a quiet laugh, the younger girl made a mental note to do so. It was something she would most likely forget with the upcoming Christmas dinner but each year brought a new form of surprise. ”That’s a sight I’d love to see.” She added in, in the midst of her laughter. ”Maybe I can use a spell to help the little things off the top of the tree, if Mum plans to use them as the topper again.”
Nodding, Bryelle apparated by his side, clutching onto his arm as the two did so. When they reached the hallway of her brother’s apartment building, the Goyle held her side, lips turning up in disgust. Even after the announcement of sixth years being able to take apparition classes, Bryelle knew the form of travel would be unsettling for her stomach. It was an odd and uncomfortable feeling, one she couldn’t really express, but the motion sickness tended to disappear after a few minutes or so. ”Thanks!” She called out from the front door, closing it behind her as he headed towards the direction of the spare room. She loved the dynamic the two of them had, knowing that Bryelle would refuse to give up an opportunity to stay with her brother over than share a roof with her parents any longer she was used to.
Pale eyes looked around the room briefly, noting how simple it always looked. Perfect for one person but somewhat empty for two. The observations were cut short once Renard walked back into the room, with Bryelle watching as the elder Goyle flopped onto his couch. She done the same, mimicking her brother the same way she had done since her childhood, letting the long strands of her hair fall from the side of it while she let out a deep sigh. ”You honestly need a girlfriend.” She teased, rolling her head to look at him. ”I bet you do exactly this everyday. Work, come home to sit on the couch, shower and sleep.”

12.21.2024 “Please do,” he said with an exasperated sigh. Considering it was his job to deal with magical beasts and beings when things went wrong, he very much preferred not getting a call from colleagues in his department explaining that his parents were abusing house elves again. Gone were the ‘good old days’ as dearest mum and dad would call them; the days where having the house elves do anything and everything and then reprimanding them for not doing things the correct way. While Renard was indifferent to them at the end of the day, his parents didn’t deserve to have the little creatures be their slaves to every whim and they certainly weren’t treated with the kindness that they often deserved. Once his parents were dead and he inherited them, off to Hogwarts they would go. At least they’d get to be others of their kind there.
As he reentered the sparse living room, he let out a sort of half-laugh at Bryelle’s tease. There were never girlfriends, per se. There was the occasional woman, but they were usually relegated to the casino’s hotel and didn’t make it much further past the one night stand phase. Renard found that he could easily turn them away once his sober personality came out. Being an asshole was enticing when all parties involved her drunk but not so much the next morning. He didn’t really care at the end of the day because they weren’t going to be permanent fixtures in his life by a longshot. “And what if I don’t do that? I do have other interests other than work and being alone.” Like going to the casino and throwing away his money or getting drunk every other night. He quite liked doing both of those since it numbed the work day and made it go away for a few hours. “Girlfriends take up too much time anyways. I like my me time.”

FROM HIS SIGH, BRYELLE COULDN’T help but let a laugh pass by. Renard was the kind of person to hold a stern look, make people feel intimidated but he always felt bad for the elves that pattered their…odd feet in their home. The elves were always bullied by the Goyle parents, since Bryelle could even remember the small things passing by her on a daily basis. ”I’ll do my best chief.” She said playfully, hand raising to feign a serious salute. If Renard’s personality could be weighed, she knew no scale could measure the changes her older brother faced in minutes, especially with his different attitudes to things. Bryelle didn’t have much to worry about, considering she was the only family he truly liked, but when she had her…Days, rebelling which led the Professors to send information home, Renard was usually the first person contacted. He was once a high academic person after all.
”Suuuure.” She dragged out, the grin forming on her lips was definitely a shit-eating one. Renard had absolutely no other interests aside from: being an asshole, working, being alone and maybe drinking. Bryelle knew they had some differences there, she actually enjoyed the company of others. ”You mean, you just have no time for girlfriends. Didn’t you used to say relationships were pointless? Or something along those lines anyway?”

12.21.2024 Somehow his views on courtships and girlfriends weren’t convincing his sister at all. Bryelle could believe whatever she wanted, but it wasn’t going to happen any time soon unless he was forced to. Being forced fell under the category of some sort of fucked up betrothal arraignment by their idiot parents or having to sucker some poor girl into pretending to be dating him to get them to back off of setting something up for him. Renard wasn’t beyond doing something like that – he had played the ‘boyfriend’ before for girls so that they could do what they wanted without any questions from their unbelievably wealthy and entitled parents. Paying a girl with the right pedigree to do the same for him wouldn’t be all that difficult. There were plenty at the Ministry that needed the money. The low end jobs and internships were laughable when it came to their salaries. If anything, an agreement like that would be mutually beneficial for both parties. He didn’t care how that would make him look either, since his parents were too dumb to see past the visage.
“They sort of are pointless. Dating is a sign of wanting to settle down, and why on earth would I ever want to do that? I could be spending that time furthering my career for Merlin’s sake,” he said, his words laced with annoyance. It wasn’t directed at Bryelle at all, but more their parents and everyone around him at work. Everyone his age was suckered into this great game of dating and getting married young to start families. What was wrong with wanting to be a bachelor? The only things he had to worry about was getting to work on time and remembering to feed his cat. “Sorry. If I don’t get this out now, I’ll be in a shouting match during Christmas dinner. Because you know they’re going to bring it up. A Goyle unmarried and without a potential wife in his twenties is literally unfathomable to those imbeciles. Fuck their traditions.”

IN SOME KIND OF FUCKED up future, Bryelle knew she would want to settle down. With a husband or a wife, with kids of her own or adopted. She wanted to be the first of the Goyles to have a better life, to do better and honestly? To simply tarnish the name. She couldn’t wait for the moment Goyle didn’t matter anymore, and the line of her loved one would. It would be different for Renard though, being a male, he would simply continue if he ever actually decided to get married. But Bryelle doubted it.
”Furthering your career?” She repeated. ”Merlin, you really are money motivated.” It was a good motive to have truly, but sometimes too much power and money led to greed. And Bryelle truly thought Renard might be the sort of person to fall to the eagerness of Greed’s values. ”Though, I get what you mean though. It’s nice to know one of us in the family actually has a goal to achieve.” Bryelle’s mind was fumbled with choices everyday she woke up. ”It’s all good. I think this is a lot better than yelling at Mom for the fifth Christmas in a row.” Though, she knew it would be expected anyways. She fucking hated speaking to her. ”Oh don’t get me started…their lovely Pureblood values of continuing our blood purity as well! Can’t wait for the next bunch of shit they’ll come up with once I graduate.”

▲ Renard let out a loud, booming bark of a laugh at his sister’s comment about him being money motivated. It was funny because he really didn’t need the money. Being a trust fund child already provided him with enough of that. She would see it once she graduated, but he was almost positive that she didn’t know the extent of how much money was actually set aside for both of them by their parents. This was the money that their grandparents had worked for, obviously because their own parents were too stupid to get decent careers that actually made anything. All they could do is put food on the table and buy school supplies. Training trolls and cleaning up after Ministry messes was terrible. No, the real reason he wanted more money was because he could sink more of it into the casino. Playing high stakes games had the potential of turning out more in return, and he had a shot of actually coming out on the winning end with those ones. More money meant he could play more and forget about his family name. More money would buy him talks with bigger names in the Ministry. Ones that would accept a renewed Goyle name. Everyone knew his parents were idiots, so getting back to that glory would hopefully change everything. “They’re lucky they even managed to continue the pureblood line. If it even is pure,” Renard retorted, casting out the doubt he had been holding in for a long time. There really was no telling if they were actually pureblooded. Everything was muddied these days, and all it took was one half-blood decades ago to lie about their line and that would do it. Hell, it probably had happened. “Honestly, I’m interested in what they’ll say. It’s been mental gymnastics for me for the last couple of years, so I’m sure they’ll come up with something new for you. Being married and having children at twenty won’t be enough for them anymore.”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

HIS LAUGH WASN’T EXPECTED BUT it was a sound that was rather rare from her older brother. She knew money was far from Renard’s motivation, but given how different their parents had treated their upbringings, money — aside from getting out of the mad house — was all on Bryelle’s mind. Her mother had decided to be less than generous with Bryelle’s touchings or involvement with her trust funds, but her father was always the weak one. Of course, money wasn’t necessary while the Goyle was still stuck inside of Hogwarts, but it was nice to splurge every now and then in Hogsmeade.
At his retort, Bryelle found herself shrugging. She had thought about the possibility of the Goyle name being tainted but even then, she didn’t exactly care about blood purity like she was sure her brother did. He had a point though, considering he was twenty-one, girlfriend-less and definitely (or more so hopefully) no child in sight. One child, a stable job and a husband by twenty would have definitely not been enough for their lack-of-brains parents. ”Well. In that case then, I’ll make sure of it that my first child will arrive before my twenty-ninth birthday.” She grinned, folding her arms. ”Hopefully I find a small apartment like you did. Stable job to pay for it while I gobble up whatever pool of trust fund they give to me.”
