STILL ADMIRING HIS GIFT FONDLY, ELI DIDN'T expect Ashley to tell him she'd made it on her own. He lifted his head, chuckling in disbelief as he searched her face. "You didn't!" He retorted, but she was serious. Her face a little red, like she couldn't look him in the eye. "Wow..." He dropped his head and looked at it once again, this time with a brand new appreciation for the effort she must have put in to make it. "I just... I had yours made." He admitted sheepishly. "This is insane." And he slung it around his shoulders happily, it was light as air.
When she instructed him towards the button, Eli pulled the end until he could see it. He pressed it twice and his mouth fell open as it turned from the Hufflepuff colours to the green and silver of Slytherin. It must have taken twice as long to knit something like this and he looked at her in shock. "I-" He pulled it from his neck to look at it again, admiring the green and silver design. "Now, I guess you're always with me, huh?" He asked, smiling as he looped it back around his neck comfortably. He left it on green. "Yup," He replied, leaning back in his seat and burying his face in his scarf. "That's the idea."

Eli seemed entirely taken by surprise when Ash admitted that she made her gift for him. He challenged her, saying that she didn't, but she could tell he didn't really mean it. She shrugged a little bit, like it wasn't a big deal. It was. She'd never made a gift for anyone before. It was always much simpler to buy them, and she hadn't really ever thought of herself as a creative person before. She rolled her eyes when he admitted that he had hers made. "So? It's perfect," she said with a light laugh, putting it on and looking to both sides so he could see how it looked on her. "Besides, you've made things for me before. My charm, ice cream ... I wanted to see if I could make something for you." He seemed pleased by her gift, really liking it, which made Ashley feel all bubbly inside. She just wanted to make sure he didn't feel bad about his gift too. Ash watched, playing with the fringes of her own scarf while she watched Eli push the button like she instructed. Would he think it was dumb that she added Slytherin colors in there too? He wasn't Slytherin, so why would he want his scarf to look like her house? It just ... felt right in the moment. She'd wanted to be a part of the gift. He stared at the change, not seeming to be able to say anything and Ashley bit her lip nervously, waiting for something. Then he was smiling, wrapping it back around his neck and asking if it was so she could always be with him. Ashley laughed, "Something like that. I mean, you don't have to wear it green, I won't expect that or anything ... I just wanted you to know that it does that." She chuckled as he got comfortable in his seat again, rubbing the scarf against his face. "So ... you like it?" she asked slowly. Everything indicated that he did, but she wanted to make sure, to hear him actually say that it was an okay sort of gift. She didn't think Eli would ever lie to her, so she’d believe him if he said he liked it. Elijah Theron Fleming

THE SENTIMENT BEHIND HER CHOICE OF GIFT warmed Eli in a very familiar way. Ashley had always been thoughtful, but he continued to be surprised by just how thoughtful she was. How much attention she paid to their time together and the little things he did for her, just for fun. Maybe that was why he liked her so much. Not because he underestimated her, but because she defied him every time he thought he'd figured her out. That and the way she smiled at him, of course.
"Thanks," He muttered, looking back down to his scarf fondly, thumbs rubbing the soft, woven fabric until it warmed under his touch. The colours so vibrant he had to blink twice to take it all in. Christmas was suddenly his favourite time of the year, and that hadn't been the case for a very long time. "I'll wear it like that," He looked up, shocked that she felt the need to tell him that he didn't. "And then everyone will know that you gave me it when we're together," He smiled at that, teasing her slightly. "Plus," He added seriously, having looped it around his neck while it was emerald green and gleaming. "I've always wanted a Slytherin scarf for games, and stuff." He wasn't a great fan of Quidditch, but he still showed his support.
"I really love it," He assured her proudly, gesturing to her own as he sat back with butterbeer in hand, smiling over the top of it at her. They hadn't spoken about the kiss, but he was sort relieved they hadn't. And that it didn't seem to shift the easiness between them. Probably because they were both denying it, but that worked for him for the time being. "Now we practically match," He said, licking foam from his upper lip as he cradled his tankard to his chest. His feet knocking against Ashley's under the table as he stretched out.

Caring about someone was an interesting thing. The more Ashley Fontaine's feeling for Eli grew, the more uncertain she became about their interactions. She could read him better, could tell what he thought about her gift just by the way his lips curled into a smile when he looked down at it and by the way he wouldn't let go of it. Still, she doubted herself. She doubted that her small gesture would mean anything real. Maybe her uncertainty had everything to do with kissing him before break, she wasn't sure. So, though it shouldn't, it came as a surprise to her when he told her he wanted to wear it green, and that everyone would know it was from her when they were together. She blushed a little but smiled and nodded, definitely pleased by his words. He didn't mind people knowing that she gave him a scarf with Slytherin colors? Ashley actually liked the idea. She knew she didn't really have a claim of Eli. They weren't dating or anything, but him letting people know she gave him that scarf almost felt like she was claiming him. Not that she could think about saying something like that out loud. "Well, as long as you don't mind, I definitely don't either." She laughed when he said now he'd have a scarf for Quidditch games. "Oh, so you'll support Slytherin instead of Hufflepuff?" Ashley teased, definitely feeling more relaxed and comfortable now. He just had a way of doing that. It was incredible. "How will all your friends feel about that?" She couldn't return the gesture. Joe was on the Slytherin Quidditch team. If she cheered for someone else, she'd definitely get an earful. Eli told her that he loved the scarf and Ashley smiled brightly. "I love yours too. It's so pretty," she said, glancing down at it again and feeling the soft fabric. It was definitely better quality than the one she'd given him, but Eli didn't seem to mind, so she wouldn't worry about it. She took another drink of butterbeer as he did, smiling when he mentioned that they matched. "I still can't believe we both got each other scarfs. So perfect." If she was braver, she'd say it was a sign, but she didn't. Instead she just thought it. His feet his hers under the table and she met his eyes. "So ... are you ready to go outside?" she asked. Ashley was ready to check things out with him. Doing things at the festival with Eli would definitely be more fun than doing them with anyone else. Elijah Theron Fleming

BETWEEN THEIR LETTERS OVER BREAK, AND THE way they always planned to see each other, Eli felt sure that there was something more between him and Ashley. They'd kissed, which was a bold giveaway, but he still found himself treading carefully around her. Ever since they'd fallen out back at Ilvermorny, their newfound connection was a tentative thing. Eli felt sure he was going to ruin it. So, he didn't push the matter. He smiled when she bought him incredibly thoughtful, and personal gifts. And he pretended like he didn't want to lean over and kiss her for it. Instead, he simply said thank you.
"Uh..." He rolled his eyes upwards as he thought. "Maybe not that far." He'd only been a Hufflepuff for a little while, but Quidditch had never been his thing. "I don't even think that's allowed." He joked, though his loyalties tended to lie with people and not organised team sports. "I'll keep it on Puff for those games." He conceded, though his brow raised slightly as he lowered his voice to add, "But they won't know there's a Slytherin underneath." In reality, he didn't much care who one. He'd always be on Ashley's side.
"That's a relief," He joked, though his smile was soft and fond. Admiring the way she smiled at him, like they shared something secret. He finished his butterbeer before she did, but he wasn't in a hurry to leave either. Once they'd left, that was just one step closer to when they had to part ways again. And he wasn't in a rush for that to happen. "It was fate," He remarked, setting his empty tankard down. It was about time for them to head out in the main winter attractions, but he waited for her to say so first. "I'm ready." He said, tucking his Slytherin scarf around his neck securely.
- END ELI

Ashley couldn't help but laugh when Eli admitted that he might not want to root for Slytherin during the Quidditch games. "That's okay, I was teasing." Her eyes twinkled when he mentioned that no one else would know there was a Slytherin underneath his Hufflepuff scarf. "I really like that," Ash admitted. It was why she'd made it. She wanted to have a connection to him, even if no one else knew about it. She leaned back against the booth, tilting her head as she looked at him thoughtfully. "Though if you ever want to watch a Quidditch game with me, now you'll be able to blend in with the Slytherins." Granted, she could always borrow his scarf and blend in with the Hufflepuffs, but this was more fun to talk about, especially since they were teasing and joking around with one another. She rolled her eyes when Eli said it was a relief that she liked the scarf he gave her. Like she could do anything but love it! The thing was beautiful and soft and carried a great memory with it. Even though she doubted anything serious would develop between the two of them, at least he kept giving her memories. Ashley grinned, nodding when Eli said it was fate that they both gave one another scarfs. At least he wasn't bothered by it. She stood when he said that he was ready. "Then let's get going!" Ashley said, excited to see what else she and Eli would do together today. --- the end --- Elijah Theron Fleming
