If the alert had come in five minutes later, Hermione would have missed it. She had happened to have been in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, checking in with the temporary head while Harry was still missing. She refused to name him to the position permanently, as that would mean she didn’t think Harry was going to come back. But he was going to come home - he HAD to. That wasn’t an option in Hermione’s mind, no scenario where his lifeless body was….no, she refused to think of it. But before her temporary head had a chance to argue with her yet again about the status of his job, it came. There was a dragon rampaging in the village of Hogsmeade. Hermione’s blood ran cold; Hugo was still a student at Hogwarts, Head Boy. She knew he was home for the holidays, but she hadn’t seen him before she had left for the Ministry. He had his Apparition license, what if he had gone to the village for the day? They were having that Winter festival after all. As the interim head started shouting orders, Hermione felt an overwhelming sense of deadly calm to her. She would not just sit by and hope her Aurors could handle the dragon while they called in the dragon keepers to assist. She had learned plenty about dragons and how to subdue them from her fourth year at Hogwarts - it had been the First Task of the Triwizard Tournament after all! She had tirelessly helped Harry figure out the best way to subdue his dragon, and had of course meticulously watched the other Champions during their forays. She didn’t even need to mention breaking the Gringotts dragon out of its’ prison almost twenty-five years ago. No, Hermione had enough experience to go after and help subdue the dragon, protocol be damned. She waved her wand and immediately changed into a black dragonhide jacket and pants, then took off down the hallway. On the way, she spotted her nephew Albus, and thought quickly. “Albus! You’re with me!” she shouted as the other trainees ran down the hall towards the fireplaces, hoping to get to Hogsmeade as soon as possible before too much damage was done. Rose had once again found herself at Hogsmeade for the winter festival. This time, she was there for the purpose the festival had probably been created for - to buy gifts. Christmas had already passed, but she hadn't yet seen some of her cousins, and they would never know that she had gotten their gifts a little behind schedule. Unless she ran into them, of course, but really, the chances of that weren't that high, right?
Rose should have known better than to tempt fate, because the chances of dragons landing from the sky weren't that high, either, but here they were, with dragons above them. Not a moment after her mind registered the dragons, she heard a familiar voice shouting out the name of one of her cousins. Specifically, one of the cousins she had been shopping for. Well, at least Albus would be too distracted by the dragons to bother asking if she had her Christmas gift for him on her person.
Either way, her mother was there, and Rose was more than willing to join her mother and cousin. She trusted that her mum would have a better idea of what to do and how to be helpful than she did. Rose ignored the roiling in her stomach as she thought about all the not-so-great outcomes from having rampaging dragons. But that was why she was here - to keep people from getting help. Rose took off running towards the sound of her mother's voice. "Mum!" She called over the ruckus of the crowd, only just managing to slide in by her mother's side before the gaps between people closed. "Can I help?!"

THE NEWS OF THE DRAGONS TERRORISING Hogsmeade hit the Ministry head on. Albus had been study for an upcoming review, his mind occupied when an alarm rung out and he was quickly informed that he should 'ready up' and meet the others at Hogsmeade. It was the first time he'd been told to work outside of the Ministry, his training purely fictional up until that moment. It was real, and his heart was pounding as he marched down the hallway towards the Floo Network, so much so that he jumped when a hand grabbed him.
"Aunt-" Albus started, but stopped with a firm nod when he was informed he would be accompanying her to Hogsmeade. He felt a zing of pride at being chosen, that she trusted him to stand alongside her, as they briefly separated for travel, his body bending and shooting as he landed feet first in Hogsmeade, his stomach turning as he searched for Hermione among the crowd.
The first thing he noted was the chaos. The streets were littered with discarded rubbish, and stones slid and crashed on the cobble stoned streets as they were torn by monstrous claws. Albus immediately retrieved his wand, his ears ringing with a great roar as a dragon took to the skies above him, blotting out the light as it flew by, before landing on a nearby building.
"Hermione!" He called, jostled by shoulders and arms as people fled the scene in a panic. Eventually, he caught sight of his aunt, standing proudly and without fear. "Hey..." He breathed, jogging up beside her with a firm nod of greeting. "I don't know how many there are, but they'd done a fair bit of damage." He noted, shaking his head at the carnage around them. Though they were interrupted as someone called for their mum, it took Albus a second to realise it was Rose. He frowned, worry tensing his shoulders. The sight of her red hair made him think of Lily, and he wished suddenly that she'd forgone the festivities for once. Though he doubted it.

Hermione damn near froze when she heard the familiar female voice ring out. Mum. It was Rose; her maternal instincts rushed in. Of course her daughter couldn’t help her - she wasn’t ready! But of course, Hermione was just trying to protect her child. Rose was eighteen, a woman in the eyes of the wizarding world. When she was Rose’s age, she had fought in a war and helped defeat Lord Voldemort. Rose was a bright and talented witch, and it was the bright and talented that she needed now. “Rose, to me,” she called, confirming that she’d let her daughter fight. She doubted Rose would just sit back and skulk if she had said no anyway. Albus returned from his scouting; he could not confirm the number of dragons taking part, which was understandable. Truth be told they all looked similar from their viewpoint on the ground. “Our main task is to first escort all remaining civilians to safety, and to bulk up the protections around the buildings so they aren’t destroyed. Rose, take the Honeydukes and Zonkos area, Albus head towards the Hogshead and outlying villages. Keep yourselves shielded at all times, and stay alert. I’ll take the Three Broomsticks,” she instructed, her tone barking and authoritative. This was why she was Minister for Magic; she knew what people whispered behind her backs after all, she wasn’t deaf. She’d show them exactly what she was made of. Following orders was something that Rose was surprisingly good at. She probably wasn’t as good as either her mother or cousin, since they were trained in this sort of thing, but she was decent enough. She was even better at following orders from people that she trusted, and her mother was at the top of the list of people whose directions she would follow willingly and without hesitation. Hermione said that their main task was getting civilians to safety, and Rose couldn’t help but feel a thrill up her spine. She wasn’t a civilian – or at least, she didn’t feel like one, since she was the one helping everyone to safety.
Rose cast a quick shield on herself before taking off towards Honeydukes. Just as she had expected, the people in the area of the candy shop were mostly younger children with their parents. The crowd was all pushing against each other, and Rose set off a flare with her wand, catching the eyes of most of the seething people. “The nearest evacuation point is that way,” she sent a shower of golden sparks upwards and in the direction of where the people could Floo to safely. “Shield yourselves and the minors you’re responsible for. If you’re without a parent, come to me.” Apparently Rose was going to make herself responsible for a horde of school-aged children – lovely.

IT WAS VERY PLAIN AND OBVIOUS THAT ALBUS admired his aunt Hermione in a way he'd never admired his own father. She was successful in her own right, and not just because it was written as so. Plus, it helped that he didn't need to exceed her accomplishments. So, when she told him what to do, he followed without question. Marching towards the Hogshead, his wand casting protection spell after protection spell. He tried to buffer the buildings surrounding his area. All the while, his voice boomed over the cry of dragons and panicked villagers.
"Make your way towards the evacuation points!" He called, his voice deep and barking. "Follow the sparks towards the evacuation points and keep your heads down!" He didn't personally escort any one, because it wasn't in his nature to be so instinctively attentive. Instead, he focused on containing patches of flaming buildings, clearing pathways where roofing had tumbled to the ground.
It was a heady mixture of adrenaline that kept him going, his face pink with it as he used his wand to stop a clump of stonework from landing right on top of him, before he had to turn and dodge a spew of fire that came from a dragon which had landed almost directly on top of the Hogshead. The edges of his robes singeing ever so slightly. The roofing crumbled under its claws and Albus felt an undeniable urge to put it down on his own. This was incredibly foolhardy, but Albus had never been known for his level head.
It let out another spew of fire and Albus had to dodge it once more, but this time, he countered it with a spell of his own. One that lashed out and caught the dragons thigh, creating a very small gash on its meaty, armoured skin. It let out a great roar of irritation and fury and its beady eyes roved the ground, stopping on a villager who was frozen in fear. It did not immediately cop Albus as the perpetrator - as he had hoped - but instead, let out a fiery scream meant to incinerate the villager in one.
Albus moved in to action immediately, casting a brief protection spell to halt the fire, though it melted it in seconds. Next, he cast a spell throwing the villager across the ground, but out of the firing line. An acceptable loss, though the villager cried and inspected their skinned palms like an infant. At least they weren't dead, he thought. However, Albus was now suddenly the sole source of the dragons unending fury. But, that had been his idea from the beginning. Perhaps his father's absence was making him dangerously impulsive, or maybe he'd always been like this. He sent another scathing spell towards the dragon, inciting more anger, but giving him time to grab the villager by the arm and shove them towards the evacuation point. "Move!" He yelled at them, eyes wild with excitement. "Get out of here!"
@hermionejean someone please save this idiot boy of mine.
