A Winter Wonderland Festival. In Hogsmeade. Over the Christmas holiday. It was as if whoever put together the festival quite literally plucked the ideas out of Irina Krum’s mind and made them happen. Hogsmeade held a special place in her heart, as she and Dan had helped decorate the Three Broomsticks last Christmas for his mothers’ friend. She admittedly hadn’t been to the village all that much since then, just to visit with her sisters on their Hogsmeade weekends this fall. She hadn’t wanted to be reminded of the love she had lost when Dan had left. But now, they had started fresh, and the Winter Wonderland festival seemed like a marvelous way to kick off the holiday celebrations. Irina loved everything about Christmas, from the smell of a freshly cut down Christmas tree, to the hunger inducing scents of sugar and gingerbread cookies wafting from the oven, to all the twinkling lights dotting the homes of Muggles and wizards alike. Fairy lights seemed to be popular regardless of your affiliation, and Irina could appreciate that. They had decided on a weekday so that the crowds would be less severe, but there were still a fair amount of people galavanting around the Monday before Christmas as Irina adjusted her bearings after Apparating into the village. She was meeting Dan in front of the Three Broomsticks, so she made a beeline for the pub, her long dark hair streaming behind her. She had worn warm clothing since the festival was outdoors, but luckily it wasn’t too chilly yet. Still, Irina crossed her arms for the extra warmth as she looked back and forth, waiting for her boyfriend to show up. @daniel

Dan wasn't entirely thrilled about reliving the memory of their last Christmas here either. Not that it wasn't a wonderful time, but it led to some much harder times very, very soon afterward. Plus, the wonderful times were one of the things that led up to the not so good times... it was Dan's fault for not being able to deal with himself and his emotions and whatnot. But they were meeting at the three broomsticks during this festival. He didn't really pay much attention to the booths or anything as he moved toward the pub. He was sure it was all well and cute, but things were easier for him if he just kept his focus on one thing at a time. He caught site of her and smiled, picking up his pace. His hands were shoved into his pockets as he nodded at her in greeting before reaching her, "hey, any chance you've seen a pretty girl around here looking for a certain quidditch player?"Irina Rose Krum

Irina whirled around at the familiar voice, and a smile spread across her face. "I don't know, know any Quidditch players wandering around here maybe?" she asked, cocking her head to one side. She closed the distance between them and pressed a soft kiss to his cheek. "Was wondering if you were ever going to show up," she teasingly reprimanded him. She paused, noticing the shadow across his eyes, and she knew he was remembering the last time they were out in front of the Three Broomsticks as well. "Hey, I'm here with you, for you, remember?" she reminded him softly, slipping her hand in his and entwining their fingers. She tugged at his arm, requesting silently to follow her lead as they began their trek into the Winter Markets. "I've had a bit of time to scope out the different booths, what they have to offer here," she told him breezily as they passed carts serving up hot chocolate. She went over to it and bought them both a covered cup of the liquid. "Where we're going first, we'll need this," she told him, and she continued their walk towards their destination. When they arrived, she stopped and turned to him, beaming. "I've always wanted to see all of Hogwarts and its' countryside from the warmth of a nice carriage," she told him, gesturing to the winged horse carriage rides. "What do you say?" she asked, taking a sip of the hot chocolate. It was warm and chocolately, running down her throat like ambrosia. "Let's take to the sky," she added, not caring or not if it sounded cheesy. @daniel

"Considered not showing up," he confessed with a shrug. Then he hurried to say - "not because of you." She'd know that, he hoped, but it was good to clarify sometimes. Then she said she was there with him, and he nodded. She was thinking about the same thing he was... and maybe feeling just as melancholy about all the following events as well? He let her lead him away and they walked together. He listened to her talking about the booths - eyes searching about but trying to focus his energy on the words she was saying and not all of the people. Then she bought them hot chocolate, saying they'd need it and he raised an eyebrow at her. Ah, a carriage ride. "Works for me," he answered. Carriages were pretty secluded which was nice. Especially one in the sky. He took a sup of his cocoa too, looking down at the cup after he had done so. "Whatever you say," he agreed, moving toward the carriages with her. He liked horses, and Pegasi were alright too, but heir emotions were a little different than a horse. They were just as proud, clearly, but more... adventurous in a way. These tamed ones though, they just seemed pleased - to show off, he guessed. @irina

Irina mock gasped and placed a hand over her heart. “Why Daniel Hoh, you’d stand me up?” she uttered in a fake rage, before smiling over at him. “I know,” she added softly. A lot of memories were made here, but she didn’t want to linger in the past any longer. It was not worth Dan’s emotional state. She was pleased he agreed to accompany her on a carriage ride, easily following along with her idea. They got in line and waited their turn, Irina watching in excitement as the carriages took off into the sky, landing some time later with their riders pink faced and joyful. Finally, it was their turn; Irina hopped into the carriage first, making sure not to spill her cup of cocoa on the way. Tucking the warm woolly blanket over her legs, she extended her hand to Daniel. “Monsieur?” she said in French with a giggle. When they were settled, the handler whistled and the carriage took off. Granted, it was a bit bumpier than on a broomstick, but Irina still got the swooping, exhilarating feeling in her stomach as they took to the sky. She looked towards the left, seeing Hogwarts castle appear in the distance. “Seven years at that school, and I could never get tired of that view,” she said softly, pointing with a gloved hand towards the castle. @daniel

She gasped and asked if he'd stand her up, joking of course, and he grinned, shaking his head. She said she knew that he wouldn't do that and he didn't speak more on the subject, joking or not. Soon they were in line for the carriages and he swayed back and forth from his heels to his toes, eyes straight ahead on the carriage and pegasi before them. Irina jumped in first and he instinctively held a hand out just behind her back in case she fell backward. Then she offered him a hand, and a french greeting, and he took her hand to pull in, keeping his cocoa level as well. "What's with the French?" he asked, wiggling his eyebrow, "German is the superior language, everyone knows that," he grinned. They took off, and she commented on the castle when it came into view. He got more settled, leaning back and making sure his legs were pressed toward hers under the blanket. He nodded, then rested his chin on her shoulder, eyes toward the castle. Her sense of wonder, admiration, awe and whatever else washed over him and he smiled, "it's a lovely castle," he agreed. "Do you miss it?"Irina Rose Krum

Irina rolled her eyes and smiled. She had learned a bit of German for Dan’s present last Christmas, thanks to Adrian, but she had learned French when she was younger from her dads’ friend Fleur, and she had been a most captivating teacher. “My apologies, from now on I will speak only German, and get everything so horribly wrong you have to correct me all the time,” she said teasingly, nudging him lightly. She leaned her head on top of his as they soared past the turrets of Hogwarts castle, the memories flooding back of every moment she’d had there. Both the good, and the bad. She remembered the April Fools Day attack when she’d seen a man die in front of her, the elusive moments she and Dan had shared in the Astronomy Tower last fall, and where he’d told her goodbye for now. Yes, a lot of things had happened at this castle, but did she miss it? “Yes and no,” she said with a small shrug. “I have mostly fond memories of the place, but after seven years of school, it was time to move on with my life, and be what I’d been dreaming of being since I first learned about Cursebreaking. It’s everything I hoped it would be and more,” Irina sighed a little dreamily. “I miss only having to worry about essays and being caught out of bed after hours, but I love my life now,” she stated, taking his hand under the blanket and squeezing it gently. @daniel

As she suggested only speaking horrible German he smirked, "well, I don't mind correcting people so maybe it wouldn't be such a bad thing." He suggested mischievously. In all reality that would be terrible and would lead any couple into fighting. They didn't really do a lot of fighting and he didn't want to start. He'd been in fights before and it was impossible to think logically with everyone's emotions running high. That was an issue for people without his ability too, so it felt like an insane amount of pressure for him. She leaned her head on his and answered his question, speaking about missing the simplicity but that she loved her life now. She took his hand and put pressure on it - the good kind. But still, he frowned, "sometimes I wonder if you really are happy. I mean, I sense that you are, obviously... But I worry," he admitted, eyes still on the castle. "I just think you deserve the best, is all " Every once in a while he did this. Irina Rose Krum

Irina rolled her eyes good-naturedly. He would hate it if she spoke broken German and they both knew it. She was trying to keep up with her lessons, but learning a language at eighteen was much more difficult than if she were younger. She wished her mother had kept up their conversations, but she had been more interested in keeping their English and Bulgarian in tact. Alas, she could not change the past, so she would simply keep chugging forward. At Dan’s next comment, she frowned slightly, and tilted her chin to look up at him. “Daniel Hoh, do you really think that if I wasn’t happy with you, I’d be thousands of feet in the chilly air enjoying quite a romantic carriage ride?” she asked, pursing her lips at him. She nudged his shoulder gently. “When the sun sets in the east, and rises in the west, that’s when I’ll stop loving you,” she told him sincerely. Since that was an actual impossibility, that meant until the end of her days. “Sorry to say it Hoh, you’re stuck with me now,” she added, kissing him lightly on the cheek before resting her head on his shoulder again. @daniel

Of course Irina protested, and he felt that she meant it. But he also felt - of his own emotions - he was lacking. He wouldn't punish her for his insecurities by pushing the issue further, at least not today. He'd most likely never find the space to let it go, but at least she handled it with grace and understanding. He smiled, eyes averting from the castle as the carriage turned away from it, circling back toward it's landing point. He wanted to say that he felt the same, he did, but he had this horrible image of his nightmares getting worse and taking over his emotions completely. He, if he had the choice, would love her forever. But a part of him was terrified that it wasn't his choice. That was ludicrous, of course, but what did he know? He stayed silent, not wanting to break her kind words by saying something small. Irina Rose Krum(I kept trying to type him saying something but he's a brat)

Irina could tell Dan was struggling with himself internally; she’d known him for almost her entire life, even before his empathic powers had reared their ugly head. It was strange, recalling the times when they were just children, no more than five or six years old. Edrik had always tried to run away with Dan when Irina wanted to join in their playtime, because he didn’t want girls interrupting their fun boy time. How far they had come since those days. She lifted her head up off his shoulder in preparation for the landing. She held her breath as the carriage bumped gracefully back onto the ground and slowed to a stop. It was never as smooth as dismounting a broom, but it was less stomach churning than she was expecting at least. She looked over at Dan. “Anything else you want to see here, or were the views alone with the journey to Hogsmeade?” she asked him. @daniel

They landed, and he was glad that she hadn't pressured him into saying anything further. He hoped she knew, understood. They'd talked about it before but he knew that people needed reminders. Heavens knew he did. She asked what else they wanted to do as they started to get out of the carriage. "I'm not a bad ice skater," he commented, nodding toward the rink. "Or we could... head into the Broomsticks to warm up," his throat caught on the last two words. Maybe it was time they visited inside the place together, looked at the decorations to see how they differed from the last year. He took her hand, helping her out of the carriage. Once she stepped out he lifted her hand up to his lips, kissed it, and then took it with both of his hands instead of just the one. He looked down at her fingers, not realizing he may be in the way of the next people in line to get on the carriage rides. He shook his head, "For fear of which, hear this, thou age unbred: Ere you were born was beauty’s summer dead.'" he whispered, quoting Shakespeare Sonnet one hundred and four. Then he blinked, stepped back and switched to only hold her with one hand again. Irina Rose Krum

Irina smiled, slightly taken aback at Dan’s whimsical romantic gesture, but was pleased all the same. She squeezed the palms of his hands with her own, her smile growing wide as he recited a Shakespearean sonnet. “How lucky am I to have a man with such talent and memory of recitation?” she said softly, her gaze locked with his own. She didn’t care that there was a queue waiting for them to move away from the horses, she didn’t care about anyone else at that moment. It was just the two of them, Dan and Irina. Nothing else mattered. The moment had to end though, and they found themselves walking towards the Three Broomsticks. It was time, she decided. The pub had provided them an afternoon reprieve from everything that had gone on in their short, blossoming relationship last year, a time to let go of everything and give themselves over to passion. It had been blissful, and something Irina had tried to hold onto in the months following when Dan had left to return to Durmstrang. It hadn’t all been bad, and even when it had gotten bad there had been this beacon of good illuminating the darkness. “I think a good hot Butterbeer, then I’ll try my hand at this ice skating thing everyone seems to be going mad over,” she said. She hesitated only briefly, her hand on the door to the pub, before nodding to herself and pushing through into the dimly lit space. @daniel

She smiled widely, speaking of his ability to memorize and recite. He smiled a little too, softly, and shrugged. "Eh, I know some stuff," he commented quietly. He could have held their position longer, but he knew it was time to move on. Better to save the private moments for private places, he thought. Then they could last as long as he wanted. They were walking, and Dans grip on her hand was tight. He probably should have let it up a little bit, but he wasn't exactly aware of how tight it was. She said a hot butterbeer and then perhaps some ice skating. He already knew they wouldn't make it to the ice skating rink, at least not today. But he didn't say that. He just let her open the door, noticing her hesitation. They stepped inside and the pub seemed cozy, dark but lit with candles, smelling of holly and evergreen. He let her lead the way, his hand in hers. He kind of felt like a child, giving his trust over. The emotions of those in the room rushed toward him and he closed his eyes, trying to solely focus on hers. Irina Rose Krum

Irina breathed in the scent of Christmas, the holly, the pine needles, the cinnamon. No matter how bad things got, or no matter how foreboding the future looked, these were some of the scents that brought her peace and happiness. The pub was crowded; it appeared that many had the same idea as the pair to warm up from the wintry winds blowing outside before daring to brave it again. She looked around, craning her neck to try and spot somewhere more quiet; one glance back at Dan and she could tell he was having trouble staying afloat. She finally spotted a nook in the very back of the pub that nobody had noticed due to its’ proximity to the storage closet. Tugging gently, she led him to that booth and let him sit down before whisking away to buy their butterbeers. Coming back a few minutes later, Irina set the tankards down on the table before lifting hers up and drinking deeply from it. The warmth and sweetness of the butterbeer warmed her insides, giving her a fuzzy feeling that made her smile. “I remember my second year when Edrik was allowed to visit Hogsmeade and I wasn’t. That first trip he came back from the village gloating at how amazing butterbeer was, and when I had the audacity to point out that we’d had it before with mum and dad he said it just ‘wasn’t the same’ as from a tankard at the Three Broomsticks. I hate to admit it, but he was right. Not that I ever told him,” she mentioned with a chuckle before drinking deeply once more. @daniel
