december 28, 2024 It was days like today that having a large family felt more like a burden than a blessing. Rose knew that she wasn't expected to get gifts for every single one of her family members - that would be utter madness - but now that she had a proper income of her own, she felt like getting gifts for her family was kind of a rite of passage. It always felt nice to feel remembered around the holiday time, and Rose had no doubt that this Christmas would be hard, especially for her Potter cousins, with their father still gone away. She had come to the winter market twice already and hadn't picked anything up, but now it was her mission to find something worthwhile to give to all of her cousins. She'd post them to arrive in time for the new year, since she wasn't sure if she'd be seeing much of her family in person due to work obligations on her part and various other factors.
Rose was strolling through the aisles of the winter marker, waiting for something to catch her eye. She could probably fashion any bauble into something personal for one of her cousins. They all had such wide interests that it wouldn't be hard to spot something and think of a cousin who it was the perfect gift for.

The twenty-eighth was a day Edrik Krum had intended to spend at the Krum family home, cuddled by the living room’s fire — with a plate of his mother’s grandest creations on his lap. It was a time he liked to spend by himself, especially with his birthday just days away, before the realities of life would sink in again, ending his holiday as an overall. But the minute Edrik arose from his slumber, in his old room filled with books from his days in Hogwarts, Iliana — the third child of the Krums — came up with her best idea yet. For the entire family to attend the Hogsmeade festival.
At first, Edrik wasn’t against it. Even as tempted as to ask Tia Finch to attend by his side, the same way Irina asked her boyfriend and Edrik’s best friend: Daniel. But the plan never took off, because of Edrik’s own insecurities. The plan for them all was to go on a few rides, eat and eventually let one another split off to do their own thing, but that also came…crashing down. An hour in after being at the festival, Edrik found himself wandering around alone the winter market. It was natural for the Quidditch player to do so, considering he liked to take in loud atmospheres from a glance, just to see what he could do.
With his head hung low, the Krum didn’t notice he was walking in the direction of another until the collision happened all at once. He looked up after his chest hit said person, his dark eyes widening and his mouth dropping to instantly apologise. ”S-So sorry for barging into you…” He began before realisation sunk in. ”Rose…Bloody Weasley.” He grinned. What an absolute coincidence.

Rose, as a rule, didn’t like being run into; she doubted anyone did, but her train of thought, wherever it had been going, was thoroughly interrupted. Rose loathed interruptions. It was just too hard to get herself focused again if she was cut off, and she hated the wasted time and the thought that she might have missed out on an important thought or breakthrough because of that cutoff. She was already half-turning to face the offender when they began apologizing to her – in quite a familiar voice.
“Well if it isn’t my third favorite Krum child,” Rose said, smirking at Edrik when she finished her turn. She wasn’t nearly as annoyed as she had been a few moments ago, but she was still more than willing to give Edrik a hard time. She had considered calling him her least favorite Krum child, but Rose suspected that unless something changed majorly, Irina would always hold that oh-so-coveted spot in her life. “What brings you to Hogsmeade today?” Rose asked. She hoped like hell that he wasn’t there with his family – she didn’t want to see Irina today, thank you very much.

Edrik hated run-ins, whether they were coincidentally with a friend or more typically with a stranger. Most times in the Krum’s young life, he found himself colliding into those he knew and with his time spent in the Appleby Arrows, creating success for his perfect saves, he found himself bumping more into fans of all age. Mainly younger though. Though, bumping into Rose Weasley simply had to be a God’s send.
His friendship with Rose was one that was once always in the works. They tried to find things they liked — irritating Irina and things they disliked — most of the time, each other due to Edrik’s temper and his old need for resulting to violence over anything else. Fighting fire with fire is what most people said. ”Third favourite?” He questioned with a raised brow. There were only four Krum children and being the eldest, he refused to believe he had been allocated third place. ”There’s no way any of my sisters are above me. Irina, definitely not. But Iliana and Helena? No way.” He stated, shaking his head.
The grin that settled upon the male’s lips was a familiar one, one that was only made evident whenever he knew he was being messed with. And with Rose, their friendship was exactly that. Teasing and irritating one another. ”Well I was…With my family.” He began, running a hand through black waves. ”Until we all split apart. Mum and Dad are probably reminiscing old memories while Irina’s probably snogging Daniel, if he turned up.” He shrugged. ”And yourself? Ms…Intern of the season”

Rose smirked at Edrik when he repeated her assertion that he was her third-favorite Krum. “You heard me.” It was times like these that she almost wished she kept her hair down, if only for the dramatic effect of flipping it over her shoulder. “Iliana and Helena don’t annoy me,” Rose said, sticking her tongue out. It was childlike, but she felt like it was an accurate summation of her relationship with Edrik; it was built equally on mutual dislikes and mutual likes. Their tempers were both quick, and that meant that they spent just as much time arguing with each other as they did agreeing with each other. But it worked, in a way that Rose still didn’t quite understand.
Rose had to keep herself from physically cringing when Edrik said that he was there with his family. She’d have to be extra vigilant not to run into Irina. The other Krums she didn’t mind – didn’t really know well enough to mind, if she was honest – but she definitely minded the second-eldest Krum child. Though Rose had been able to suppress her first cringe, she couldn’t keep her nose from wrinkling at the thought of Irina snogging Daniel. Thinking of your nemesis snogging anyone was gross, Rose decided. “Intern of the year, thank you very much.” Rose didn’t think there actually was any sort of award for being the best intern, but if there was, she definitely deserved to win it. “I have too many cousins and not enough time to think of great gifts for all of them,” Rose admitted. She was half-terrified that she was going to forget to give one of her family members a gift and accidentally start a feud. That was the last thing that she needed. “I don’t know how I would deal with three siblings.” Thinking of a gift for Hugo had taken her five times as long as thinking of a gift for any of her cousins, and she couldn’t imagine doing that thrice over.

The Krum always knew when Rose was kidding and when the snarky words that left her lips were filled with seriousness. Though his friendship was Rose was something he'd never ask to change. They were similar in temper but different in other areas. He rolled his eyes at her comments as well as the sticking out of her tongue, reminding him of something both Iliana and Irina would do. Edrik was sure that the only saint Krum of them all was Helena, after he passed on his title to her. "Iliana and Helena don't annoy me." He mimicked, his face scrunching up as he mocked his friend. To give the flare that Rose didn't - considering her hair was tied - Edrik flicked upon his own dark locks, pressing his lips together after, feigning anger. It truly didn't last long once he started snickering away.
Edrik knew of Rose's dislike to Irina, and truthfully that's how the basis of their friendship began. As kids, both Edrik and Irina were competitive, ultimately ruining their sibling-friendship as the two grew older and Quidditch was the eldest Krum's main goal. Dark eyes noticed the soft wrinkles upon his friend's nose, and the grin he managed to uphold on his lips only drew a tad wider. The idea of running Irina by Rose would've called for a hilarious day. It was just a shame she wasn't exactly around.
"Suuure." He dragged out with a chuckle. "I'm surprised you haven't blown up in any one's face yet. Especially with that temper of yours." The Krum drew his hand, his tongue making a soft 'tut-tut' noise while his finger drummed on the back of his hand. The whole ordeal of it all amused him, considering they were alike in that area. But if Quidditch hadn't been so screwed into his brain, the Krum would have ultimately been doing something similar, working in the Ministry. When Rose revealed her reason for being in Hogsmeade, Edrik nodded in agreement, he could definitely relate there. But more so with his sisters. Being the only male, it made it easy for them to consider what gift to buy, but with three girls to decipher...Gifts were difficult. "Christmas is the worst at times. Money is made to simply disappear in the end." He commented, shoulders drawing into a small shrug. With a soft chuckle and his hands reaching up to run through black waves again, Edrik forced a smile. "Three sisters...Is a lot to deal with." He admitted, knowing the trouble they all faced for holiday family dinners. Edrik had to ensure his practice schedule was in line, his sister with her curse breaking training and just avoiding chaos as much as possible. "Just add me in with your prayers to Merlin this year." He teased, jabbing the side of her arm with his elbow.

Rose’s faced scrunched into something that was in the same family as anger, but without any of the bite behind it. She had to admit Edrik did a pretty good impression of her, even managing to catch the way she had moved to go for a hair flip before realizing that one was impossible. “You know it’s true for you, too,” she said breezily. She didn’t know much about Edrik’s relationships with his other sisters, if she was honest, but they had bonded somewhat over being competitive with Irina. Of course, things changed and Rose suspected that it was easier for the Krum siblings to get along once they weren’t in such close proximity to each other.
“It’s much easier not to blow up at people who know what they’re doing,” she said, sticking her nose in the air. People who were incompetent were the bane of her existence, but luckily it seemed like the area of the Ministry she was working with mostly had themselves together. Rose was going to credit her mother’s leadership as Minister as part of that, but also just that her department was, of course, the best. “I mostly just scream into my pillow when I get home if I’ve had a hard day.” That didn’t happen so often, especially since Rose was really getting into the swing of things with working now.
Rose nodded when Edrik said money was made to disappear. He was probably doing better than she was, since Quidditch star was more lucrative than Ministry grunt, but he was also right – money, no matter how much you had, was meant to be spent. He went on to say that three sisters was a lot, and she nodded, even though she hadn’t a clue what it was like to have a sister. Nor did she particularly want a clue; one brother and a lot of cousins her age was more than enough for her. “I’m not going to pray to Merlin for you, Ed.” Besides, with Irina as a sister, no amount of prayers would help him.

FEELING THE NEED to be dramatic, Edrik’s hand flew over his heart as he looked over at his friend, eyes widening in feigned awe. ”R-Rose.” He stuttered, throwing his head down as he sniffled. Jesus what had gotten into him today. ”Is that a compliment?” He asked once he lifted his head, his finger curling to brush under his eye, wiping non-existent tears away. He always enjoyed Rose’s company amongst their competition against Irina, even if his own competitive streak against his sister died a few years back. It was still fun to root for someone else.
Edrik wanted to relate there, but Quidditch was the strongest thing of his life as well his ultimate weak spot. It was where his anger came out in its truest of forms, especially since he learned how to control it during his last few years in Hogwarts. A bellow of laughter left the Krum’s lips at Rose’s comment about screaming into her pillow, Edrik knew Irina did something like that whenever Edrik pissed her off. Simple competition things. ”It must be cool though, to be working so close to your Mom.” Edrik’s own father was retired now, but it still didn’t mean the old man didn’t attend most of the Krum’s games, even going as far as critiquing his performance afterwards. He hadn’t exactly carried the legacy of being a Krum Seeker, but being the Keeper was fine too.
Money was the route of most evil in Edrik’s opinion. But in his case, money hadn’t caused any problems…Yet. Sure, he bought an apartment for himself back in Bulgaria and even one not too far from his home in England, but the rest of the money was kept aside. He didn’t need flashy clothes, brooms or wands…Especially when it was somewhat given to him. He blamed the Quidditch fame. Pouting, Edrik’s arms folded across his chest like a little girl he would never become. ”Why noooot!” He whined, just like he had seen with younger children. Around his friends, Edrik took joy in being childish, it was rare of him to be so, or to easily have a laugh with them.
