Sybil’s eyes narrowed at Renards uttered words, but she chose to ignore them. They weren’t that different, economically speaking, but they had had night and day different upbringings. “Not everything you read about the royals are true, you know,” she said, a bit of tart in her voice. “We’re not as demanding, as selfish, or as snobby as the gossip magazines like to paint us. We do believe in treating our staff as members of our family, as hard as that is for you to believe I’m sure.” She gave the pasta machine a particularly fierce crank as she said this, but looking down the newly made pasta didn’t seem worse for the wear. As the talk turned to Renard’s family, Sybil listened intently. She had always gotten the impression that Renard detested his parents, and she could plainly see that was true. A small pang of sympathy surprised her; she actually felt bad for the way he and his sister grew up. Not that she would EVER relay that to him, nor would she expect he would take her sympathy. He would likely insult her in some fashion, then get back to the task at hand. “I wanted to hear it from you, instead of the history books,” she said quietly, cranking out more pasta for their pot, which was slowly coming to a boil. If only they could use magic to speed that process along, but this was a Muggle cooking class, and she took the Statute of Secrecy very seriously. Imagine the headlines if it got out that she, a member of the Royal family, was a witch? It would never end. “So...you’re really just waiting for your parents to die,” she stated, wiping her hands on her apron and turning to face him. “Have you ever thought of…speeding up the process? Like the Lestranges,” she asked him hesitantly. She doubted he expected something like that to come out of her mouth, and she sort of relished the idea of shocking him. renard walt goyle

▲ “Relax princess,” Renard said condescendingly, giving a glance around the room to see if there were any heads turning in their direction. While he liked having a good spat now and then, this was neither the time nor the place for it. He’d rather be judged by his coworkers or other magic folk than to have a bunch of muggles watching this turn into an overblown yelling match. The good thing was that he knew he could get away with saying whatever he liked right now, because Sybil had the unfortunate fate of having a muggle face as well. If he caused a scene, he could disappear for any amount of time without anyone really caring. “They still have a job to do. Even though you treat them well, and they like doing what they do, it’s also their career.” The point he was trying to make was that her cooks and employees were there to serve her family, regardless of how they were treated. If they were smart, they would bend over backwards to help some royal brat learn how to cook. His parents’ house elves would do the same thing if asked. The only difference there was that the house elves weren’t paid. When it came to his parents, Renard didn’t really care anymore. They would eventually die, and their current health was by far worse than it had ever been. But their deaths were still years down the road. Until then, all he had to do was play nice. Barely following their rules was easy to do, with how stupid they were. “My parents are imbeciles. While I do not like them, I dislike having my name mentioned in the same sentence as the Lestranges even more.” Renard stared at her intensely as he kept his point succinct. Murder was an inescapable crime, in his opinion. If he offed his parents tomorrow, Aurors would be knocking on his door by afternoon tea. The Lestrange’s situation was completely different anyways, and while the elder Goyles were verbally and emotionally abusive at times, he was fairly certain he had taught both himself and his sister how to guard against it. At this point it was all a waiting game, and the second Bryelle graduated, she could distance herself in the same manner he had. Their parents were seemingly fine with that for the time being. “Anyways, my mother is bound to slip up around a troll one of these days. Sybil simply glowered at him. They were in a Muggle cooking class after all, so she didn’t want to cause a scene. Merlin the paparazzi would love to get their hands on a video or photos from one of their cooking class companions, promising a pretty penny for a royal hissy fit. Just why oh why did Blishwick’s pick Renard? He obviously didn’t think highly of her, as he had made clear during this class. What was he playing at? Instead of reacting, Sybil took a deep inhale through her nose, and exhaled through her mouth. “Unless you’d like to see yourself on the front page of the Daily Mail,” she whispered through clenched teeth. “I will kindly ask you to stop antagonizing me.” She tossed her hair and went back to the pasta, which at this point was pretty much ready to be cooked. “Right, so we bring the water to a boil first,” she said, reading the instructions and placing a pasta pot on the stove. She bent down and turned the dial up to the highest setting, putting a lid on top of the water filled pot so that it would boil faster. “ Very well, I won’t put you in the same league as the Lestranges then. Though I did know Ariadne at school, and I don’t really think she’s capable. If anything it was the older brother,” Sybil said, not mentioning that as one of Andromeda’s best friends, she knew Andy had something to do with that fateful night. Renard didn’t need to know about that of course, not that he wouldn’t assume it anyway. “What about Elaine? What do you think of her?” she asked him. renard walt goyle

▲ So that was how that worked. Renard had always wondered how the royals managed to keep people from spilling the beans on certain things. Apparently all it came down to was a little bit of journalistic blackmail. That made him chuckle. It had been a while since someone pulled that card on him. She apparently hadn’t worked at the Ministry long enough to be on the receiving end of a higher-up warning her to be careful about who she spoke to and about what. In Renard’s case, he spent his first year working and snooping around. And when he started getting doors slammed in his face, he finally understood that he had overstepped his boundaries. Sybil’s warning was exactly the same, though he could care less about having his face on the front page of a muggle publication. What would their kind say about that? Absolutely nothing. He could disappear into the magic side of London and never need to step foot outside again. Rolling his eyes at her as she looked away to read the instructions, Renard let out a bored sigh. Boiling water was instantaneous at home. If only he could pull his wand out and get it done in seconds. Waiting for it to come to a rolling boil was just a waste of time. “I don’t really care which one it is. I simply don’t like my name put in the same category as theirs,” he explained as he picked at a now dried clump of flour that had found its way onto one of his fingers. “And what is done about her is of none of my concern either. My job is to remove the pests. If I wanted to be paid to think about her, I would change my career.” As long as whatever that group was up to stayed away from him, he preferred to not think about it. In the end, the Ministry was going to figure out a way to stop them or the group would self-implode. That was how it worked. @susanvictoria ● 341 ● Blunderbuss Blues by Bill Elm & Woody Jackson MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Sybil sighed. There really was no getting through to Renard, was there? She wondered what on earth Jimbo had been thinking, pairing the two of them together. Perhaps it was random, or perhaps he hoped that they would be able to set aside their differences for a night of cooking. Well, he was certainly mistaken by that. She looked around, and spotted something that may help her get through the rest of this evening. “Wine?” she asked Renard shortly, not bothering to wait for an answer as she uncorked the bottle and poured two generous glasses of wine. She picked her glass up and took a long sip, ignoring the instructors stutters that the wine was supposed to be saved, but was silenced with a look. As she had suspected, he had recognized her when they had come in, but had been smart enough not to bring that to the rest of the groups attention. “Fine, you don’t have to think about Elaine, or your family for that matter. But….do you not get lonely, throwing yourself into work, hating your parents?” she asked finally after the water had boiled and they’d put the homemade pasta in the pot. She set a timer, then took another large sip of wine, fingers drumming on the table. “Though I suspect that’s not any of my business, as you’ve made perfectly clear tonight,” she added dryly. renard walt goyle

▲ Watching Sybil poor and obscene amount of wine in the bulbous glasses that had been provided to them was weirdly therapeutic. At least they probably both agreed that this was going to go nowhere and they were simply completing the class out of obligation now. Plus he didn’t want to have the money he spent for the blind date to go to waste now. Taking his glass, a long sip followed. It was cheap wine, but not the worst in the world. Neither of them seemed to care that they weren’t supposed to be drinking yet. In his opinion, that was the only way they were going to get through to the end. If he hadn’t been sipping the wine and actually taking care to get the pasta finished, he probably would have scoffed again. The concept of loneliness had never once crossed his mind since he moved out of his parents’ house. “I was unaware that there was something wrong with being career driven and ambitious. I don’t plan on staying in my department forever, you know.” Thanks to his family’s follies prior to his birth, there was a bit of a steeper climb to make than he probably should have had. People were still uneasy around the Goyle name, and for good reason. Not that he felt like he had to prove himself to anyone within the Ministry. His work would do that for him, and eventually he’d crawl out of his department and then right on up to the next level. “And who said I was lonely? I have a cat,” he added before taking another long sip of the wine, finishing off the glass and then quickly filling it again before holding it up for Sybil if she wanted more. @susanvictoria ● 294 ● Turn Out the Lights by Julien Baker MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Sybil raised her eyebrow. A cat? Now that was certainly unexpected. “You? A cat? Really?” she repeated, sounding incredulous. “What’s his name? Or hers,” she then asked, not really meaning to but she couldn’t help her curiosity. This was likely the first somewhat human thing Renard had said during this cooking class, and it was nearly over. “I just don’t see you as a cat person. A dog maybe, a big one like a Rottweiler or a Doberman Pinscher. Never thought you’d have a cat. Would have imagined they would be too high and mighty for you,” she added. It was true; dogs had masters (or mistresses) cats had staff. Her grandmother had a needlepoint that said that, and it had made her laugh as a child. It really was true though; Sybils’ dogs threw themselves at her in delight when she came into the apartments of Kensington Palace, while the cats would give her a glance, then went right back to sleep. Then again, maybe a cat really was perfect for Renard; they thought the same way about themselves after all. “Why would you want to leave the department? I imagined you’d be at the head, running everything one day. Or is that not setting the bar high enough for your standards?” Sybil retorted, finding herself somewhat surprised at Renard’s comment about his department. Sybil had joined their department because she had WANTED to, not because she felt forced to. Sure, she wanted to move up and perhaps have a leadership role, but she also had her royal duties to attend to; those were due to ramp up soon anyway. She let out a sigh involuntarily; being involved in both the Magic and Muggle world was quite exhausting sometimes. renard walt goyle

▲ “Baron Bartholomew. My sister named him,” Renard stated, lying about the fact that it was actually him that had given the cat that goofy name. It definitely seemed like a name that Bryelle would come up with, but not for this cat. Technically the adoption agency had named it Bartholomew already, and he added the Baron portion to make it sound more official. Nothing beat a regal name. Sybil probably understood that, being royalty and all. “Dogs require too much active care. A cat is perfect for my lifestyle. He’s fine as long as I feed him and the litter box is taken care of with a little help from you-know-what,” he explained. Charming the litter box to clean itself was one of the best decisions he had ever made. A daily cleaning spell wasn’t difficult by any means but having it take care of itself on its own was exponentially better. Plus, the Baron wasn’t the cuddle-up kind of cat. He lived his own life and that was perfectly fine with Renard. They coexisted together excellently. Career-wise, anything that had upwards mobility was a goal. Renard really didn’t care what department he ended up in by the time he retired, though lawmaking was certainly up there. That sort of thing didn’t just happen though. It would come after a long career inside the Ministry, and becoming a department head had the potential of getting in the way of it. “Because it’s stagnant? We basically function as glorified pest control. I don’t find being the department head particularly appealing at all.” Obviously the research aspects were interesting and that was where he got the most out of his job. Learning about creatures and ways to take care of and remove them was always stimulating, though he could do with a lot less ghouls. Those were always the worst calls to get, and nobody ever wanted to deal with them. Even boggarts were more thrilling at this point. @susanvictoria ● 327 ● Song by Artist MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Sybil just stared at him for a moment. She didn’t know if the wine had already affected her brain or what, but the idea that Renards cat was named Baron Bartholomew set her off in a fit of giggles. “I’m sorry, but BARON Bartholomew? So you realize you’ve made your cat rank higher than you right?” she croaked out through her laughter. She knew she was drawing attention to herself and she looked rather undignified, but come on. It’s not only a cat name that is both amazing and ridiculous at the same time, but coming from Renard, who was so straight laced he could use the aid of a muscle relaxant to unclench, it was too much for her to handle. She also didn’t believe for a moment that Renard would have just let his sister name their cat that - he had involvement in the naming, she was certain of it. “It is easier to have a cat than a dog, I can at least agree on that,” she told him, busying herself by taking another sip of her wine and dabbing at the tears that had formed in her eyes. At his next comment about their department, Sybil frowned. “How can you feel that way when it’s our responsibility for harmony between humans and creatures? We’re the ones that facilitate conversations between species that have an understanding of English, and make policies that better their lives,” Sybil told him. Stagnant? Sure some days could be more boring than the others, but she wouldn’t call it stagnant. “Not every job is about getting from point a to be on the pyramid. You can do a lot of good within the department as well. But if you’re looking to be promoted every few years, perhaps it is a good idea for you to move on,” Sybil added stiffly. She was very surprised at Renards’ description of their department, and wondered if anyone else held his viewpoint at the Ministry. renard walt goyle

▲ Renard stared blankly at Sybil as she laughed about his cat’s name. It was a cat. A cat could not be a baron no matter how hard someone tried. Maybe for royalty it was funny and quirky, but for him it was just the name of his cat. “Your point? Cats enjoy that sort of thing, don’t they? A title doesn’t matter when I’m the one that feeds him.” The name meant a lot more to his sister anyways, and he could care less what he called the creature. Half the time it was simply ‘Cat’ or ‘Hey You’ when it started to climb onto the kitchen counters. He had tried to put deterrent charms on them but that didn’t seem to stop the furball from still hopping up there and rubbing his behind over every possibly surface. Thank Merlin for magic and a quick wave of a wand, because those marble countertops absolutely did not clean themselves. Yet. He was working on that though. Obviously his opinions on work were going to draw some ire. It happened every time someone asked him what his thoughts on the job were. She had worked with him before. She knew how the job worked. And everything she seemed to be upset about really only applied to her section of the department. Apparently she forgot that she dealt with beings and he with beasts. “That may be how your daily routine goes, but you know the only time I ever deal with anything remotely intelligent is after the moon,” Renard stated. He didn’t really include centaurs because they were never a problem and too busy with their heads’ in the stars. He could count on one hand the amount of times he had to communicate with one of their communities, and it was almost always due to an issue from something else and not them directly. Like how they thought a star was misaligned. Renard didn’t give a damn if a star was misaligned. No one did except them. “Ghouls are not intelligent, by the way.”@susanvictoria ● 343 ● Cirice by Ghost MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0
