@will 12.31.2024 Finn was nervous. Beyond nervous, even. Will had invited her to this New Year’s Eve Gala or ball thing (she wasn’t sure if it was one, the other, or both), and it had dawned on her only a few days prior that this sort of event was so far beyond what she was used to that it was now making her go a little crazy. The holidays had been weird enough, with her parents coming over briefly to visit her and Ellie, and then heading back to New York only a few days after Christmas. Seeing them in England was the same as when her sister had first flown over – it was strange that they existed in the same space as her in a place they had never been before. They were supposed to be at home, not here! After getting over one of the strangest feeling Christmases ever, Finn was ready to get back to her thing, whatever that was these days, and now there was this gala. She wanted to go, but it was beyond overwhelming.
And yet she was standing in the entrance to her apartment building, waiting for Will to come and pick her up. Going dress shopping was also strange, because she didn’t really have any formal wear. Having to explain that it was a classier New Year’s Eve party worked well enough, but she wasn’t sure if what they had given her was quite what she needed for this thing. She had been to formal work things before when she was with the Aurors, but magical formals were different from no-maj ones, and all she had to go off of were quick searches online and movies. Like those were the best things to go off of. Anxiously rocking back and forth on her heels in the lobby, the lights of what she hoped was Will’s car looked to be entering the drive-thru of her building.

For a normal occasion Will would drive the car himself. Seeing as it was New Years Eve and the Gala, however, made him actually let the chauffeur do the work. It was a sleek, black car but not a limo - he always thought that was a little overboard and outdated anyway. The car, tinted windows and all, pulled into the complex and he got out of the back seat - straightening his suit jacket. He looked up to her window but then his eyes flickered down to the lobby doors where he could see Finn inside. He grinned, offering her a wave as he approached. "You look incredible," he complimented, taking in her dress and tattoos and all. He was sure his family would think her look a bit risque but he didn't really care about that. His mum was just happy Finn was coming at all. He held a hand out to her, offering a small bow, "ready, my lady?"finn kylie nottingham

@will 12.31.2024 The car that pulled up in the roundabout certainly looked like it fit the sort of car Will would drive; an immaculately shiny black vehicle, tinted windows; the works. Second guessing that this would be anyone other than her date would be a silly thing to do. It screamed royalty, formality, and Will. In all the good ways, of course. He never seemed to overdo anything, except for when he showed her around the family house. Or castle. Whatever it was that they called it. This gala had all the makings of being similar in nature, she was sure of it, but she expected it to be that way. Having a bougie outing every so often was the best way to forget the past year’s events.
The door to the backdoor on the car popped open and Will stepped out, and it looked like he spotted her almost immediately. It was hard not to smile back at him when approached. “Thank you,” she returned the grin, taking his hand as she let him lead her back towards the car. “You clean up pretty well too, my sir.” Obviously he did. He was literally born for this sort of thing. Like she was to be out in the streets roughing up hooligans and chasing vagrants through abandoned buildings. “If I need to, you know, cover up a little more, I can do that no problem,” she added with a whisper, meaning her dress and tattoos. Those were the sorts of things that were hard to hide, especially with so many of them. Magic could obviously be used, but she needed to know sooner rather than later, because the general crowd couldn’t see her with them one second, and then suddenly not the next one. “I have the perfect charm for it too, since undercover work used to require it all the time. You would be surprised at how many criminals remember you by your tats.” Finn let out a small laugh as she climbed into the passenger seat, situating herself behind the driver.

She took his hand and he led her to the car, opening the door for her as she complimented him. "I try, you know - but I have a stylist who tells me exactly what flatters me so that helps," he was only half joking... because he really did have access to a stylist - not that he used that very often. She said she could cover up more if she needed to in a whisper and he shook his head, even as she went on about a charm to cover up her tattoos. "No necessary," he promised before closing her door behind her and crossing back around to the other side. Once settled in, he leaned toward her, lifting placing a hand on her knee, "I don't want you to think you have to cover your tattoos every time you're around the family," he didn't realize how intense that could sound, about where their relationship was going and whatnot. Will was always pretty honest and straightforward, so he didn't think too hard about trying to cover up what he was saying. The car started to move and he pressed a button to close the window between them and the driver with a black screen. "It's not too far, but enough that we can enjoy a drink before if you'd like," reaching forward on the dash between them he opened the compartment with a bottle of scotch and two glasses, lit in blue. finn kylie nottingham

@will 12.31.2024 “A personal stylist? They don’t hold back do they,” she let out a small laugh. ‘They’ meaning the royal family, or whomever it was that controlled their affairs. Her stylist was a video chat with her mom about an hour prior, making sure that she didn’t screw her hair up in the back. All was good though, apparently, and Will said that her tattoos would be as well. The only one that she thought could be a problem was the one on her back, which rarely saw the light up day in her normal wardrobe. Yet here it was tonight, all on display. “Whenever I hear formal, I get flashbacks from movies I’ve watched and how even the done up outsider is still looked at funny,” she explained. “Not that I’m uncomfortable with people staring at me. I just know that these sorts of things aren’t common with this crowd.” Or if they were, they were much more discreet about them. Finn lacked that discretion during her first few years post-graduation. She never imagined she would be moving to London, let alone going to a gala with a member of royalty.
The car began the trip to the event, and Will was already moving towards a button near the divider, suddenly revealing a bottle of scotch. “Swanky,” she teased. “Yeah I’ll have one. Or two. Is this one of those red carpet things where we drive up and then have to walk by photographers?” She liked to think she had nerves of steel when it came to crime-fighting, but having people she didn’t know taking pictures? That wasn’t normal in her life by any means.

Finn said that they didn't hold back with the stylist and all and Will shook his head, an easy smile still on his lips, "they certainly don't. We have an image to uphold, after all," he joked, rolling his eyes. "No, really it's not that big of a deal - but it can be nice when I'm at a loss," which was rarely. Will was pretty confident in his wardrobe choices. She said that whenever she heard 'formal' she had flashbacks from movies and he chuckled, "and you're an American with British royalty too. It's quite the cliche. Maybe the Queen will even make a scene about it. If we're lucky," he joked again. "I'm sure Wonder Woman will be a hit," he added, moving his hand from her knee to tap her shoulder, near her back, but then moved his hand back. She said the car was 'swanky' as he revealed the drinks and he shrugged. She asked if there would be photographers and he paused, "well... there doesn't have to be if we go in a different entrance. That's your choice," he explained. He was planning to ask her about that when they got a bit closer. He took his hand from her knee in order to pour the scotch for them, just one glass each for now, and handed one to her. finn kylie nottingham

@will 12.31.2024 An image to uphold…almost the opposite of Finn’s moto, though tonight would have to be a little different. She figured she was going to be some sort of spectacle regardless of how she looked, since this was the first event she would be attending, and, as Will put it, she was an American and she looked had a different look. Maybe going through the personal stylist would have been a better move than the dress she had on currently. Taking a sip of her scotch immediately after it was poured, Finn let the drink wash the worries away. “I’d love that, actually,” she answered about the Queen. “I’m assuming she only makes a small appearance these days, right?” Pushing a hundred years old was no joke, and attending a late night gala for a brief amount of time was certainly a big deal. At the same time, seeing the Queen so close would only reinforce that this was some messed up fairytale she had found herself in. She was just a run of the mill New Yorker. Nothing more than that.
“She doesn’t get out much,” Finn laughed as Will tapped her shoulder. “You would have laughed at the amount of people that wanted to see it the last time I went to a beach. Not much is hidden out there.” Her work was thankfully tasteful, compared to some of her old colleagues in the MACUSA auror department. The real tough guys were still sporting the terrible tribal tattoos and Japanese characters that had the wrong meaning. It was like they didn’t care about the art they put on themselves. “We should be able to see when we get there, right? I might just need a little more liquid courage before that.” She took another sip at the mention of it.

Finn said she'd love to meet the Queen, asking if she only made small appearances these days. Will nodded, "to be honest she might not show up," he explained. "Sometimes she records a New Years Eve message, kind of like her Christmas message but just for family and friends at the gala," he explained. "So we may just get a video tonight. Though, word of myself having a girlfriend that I'm bringing has spread. I haven't brought anyone before," he admitted. Finn said that Wonder Woman didn't get out much, which he thought was a shame. When she talked about the beach he laughed, "oh, I believe it. They probably ran across the sand once they saw the color scheme and realized it was her," he joked, but he was sure that was true. She said she may need a little more 'liquid courage' before deciding what to do about the arrival and he nodded, "that's fine." He took a sip of his drink, too, leaning back into the seat a little. "Don't drink so much you won't want more, though. They've got the really good stuff there," he added. finn kylie nottingham

@will 12.31.2024 Finn wrinkled her nose when Will said that it was possible the Queen wouldn’t show up at all. A video message was still pretty cool, albeit an informal way to kick off the New Year. It made sense though, and her earlier rationalization helped with that. “You’re bringing your girlfriend? Gosh, I’d love to meet her. So lucky…” Finn trailed off, finding it hard to hide the smile on her face. Forcing the scotch glass to her lips was one way to do it, as she took another sip. “That’s a lot to put on someone though. Having the Queen show up just to say hello,” she shook her head. This was the Queen they were talking about! Finn couldn’t think of any other equivalent to her.
“Yeah, and you can spot it from a mile away. I wanted something loud back there, but Wonder Woman screams it,” Finn admitted with a laugh. The additional banner underneath it, where ‘Unstoppable’ was written, was typically what people saw first. That and the giant green fist that Wonder Woman was fighting against. After that, the next two people noticed were the dagger on her right inner forearm and the laser gun on her hip. They were colorful and popped out, just like she did on the bad guys back in the day. “The really good stuff? Expensive liquor scares me Will. As long as I’m talking to someone the whole time, I won’t drink all of it. Or try not to.” Specifically the wine. As long as she stayed away from that for the majority of the night, she would make it through fine. Remembering this was actually kind of important, and she had to keep up her image.

Finn said that she'd love to meet his girlfriend and he laughed, shaking his head as she mischievously hid her smile with a teasing sip of her drink. He leaned forward as she took the sip though and quickly kissing her on the cheek, "you'd like her," he joked back. Then he pulled away as she spoke about how it was a lot just to come say hello. "Eh, she likes to be involved. Very family oriented," he explained. "We'll see, we'll see. I don't think she'd like come up to you and give you a hug or anything, but she may survey you from afar," he admitted. She said Wonder Woman was loud, and that's what she wanted on her back. "And she's bad ass, so that makes sense," he added. Will liked her tattoos, they weren't just random things that didn't make any sense. Just like Finn wasn't just a random thing that didn't make any sense. She made sense to him at least. She said the expensive liquor scared her and he shook his head, "I'll make sure you only drink enough that I still get lucky tonight and you're not passing out or vomiting," he laughed, then immediately held his hands up by his head in surrender, "kidding, kidding."finn kylie nottingham

@will 12.31.2024 “Careful, you might make me catch feelings for you,” she said as Will kissed her cheek. “Don’t want to make the poor girl jealous, especially if we’d get along.” Playing this game was always fun. It dispelled, at least in her head, the idea that she was special because Will was royalty. Being normal special was perfectly fine with her, and he had a way of making everything feel normal even though it wasn’t. The pool of royal family member significant others was tiny and elite, and her being her in the middle of that was easier when Will made it that way. “That makes me feel better. I don’t think I’d know what to do if she suddenly ran up to me. Scared maybe?” Handling old people, let alone the Queen of England, was always terrifying. Her brain always defaulted to fearing that she might hug them too hard and have them disappear in a cloud of dust. Poofing the Queen out of existence was definitely not the way to win brownie points with the family.
Finn’s jaw dropped in surprise at his comment about making sure she didn’t drink too much. That was very un-royal like of him. Still, she couldn’t help laughing it at, adding in a playful punch to his shoulder as he put his arms up. “You’re testing your luck buddy,” she joked. Ellie already knew that she probably wasn’t going to be home tonight and was fine taking care of the dog on her own. Speaking of siblings… “Are your siblings bringing dates too?” she asked. Even with a couple years difference, she would still be able to associate with them because they’d all be in the same boat.

Will's smile grew as he pulled back from the kiss and she said she may catch feelings for him, but that she didn't want to make his poor 'girlfriend' jealous, especially if they would get along. "She's pretty understanding of the fact that I'm irresistible. As long as you don't jump me in the cloak room I think we're good," he joked back. At his explanation of how the Queen would treat her, Finn said that she felt better knowing the Queen wouldn't run up to her. Will laughed, and a few people looked over to see him doing so, but he didn't pay them any mind. "I think if I saw her run I'd be pretty scared too," he admitted. Her jaw dropped at his joke about drinking, and then she laughed and punched him. He leaned away from the punch, as if she had hit him harder than she really did. "I'm always testing my luck," he agreed, nodding. She asked about his siblings and he lowered his arms. "I know Ed will be bringing Addilyn Slater, not sure about the other two," at least he hoped Lusie wasn't... finn kylie nottingham(@susanvictoria, @edmund, @lusie ya'll can make a cameo anytime if you want

@will 12.31.2024 “Stop reading my mind, William. You’re not supposed to know my plans to steal you away,” Finn fake pouted, though she was sure it wasn’t the best in the world. She was an ex-Auror, not an actress, after all. “I guess you’re sort of handsome and charming. But just a little bit,” she teased as she held her fingers out to show exactly how little she meant, which wasn’t much. Poking fun at Will was easy and natural, something that her past (and brief) relationships seemed to lack. Going across the ocean to find the right guy certainly hadn’t crossed her mind a year ago, but here she was.
Laughing at the idea of the Queen running, Finn realized how silly that actually had to be. She was pushing one-hundred after all, and while that was nothing for magical folks like herself or Will, the Queen was only magical in spirit. Her no-maj body probably wouldn’t allow her to run anymore. “Hobble? Or maybe send her dogs at me? I think the last time I saw her on the news she still had the corgis…” And Finn wasn’t averse to petting a few dogs if it meant winning over the Queen. Dogs she could do any day of the week.
The last name Slater definitely sounded familiar to Finn, but it wasn’t bringing any faces to mind. Probably had a sibling that played Quidditch or something. She was always reading the sports sections of the newspaper for one reason or another, trying to figure out why the European wizards liked the sport so much. It was still played at home, but not to the same degree as it was here. “I don’t think I’ve met Ed yet. He’s still in school right?” Finn was more interested in seeing if he knew Ellie or not. She wanted to know how her sister was doing without hearing it from the girl herself.

She told him to stop reading her mind, that he wasn't supposed to know her plans of stealing him away. "I thought I'd steal you away. But your plans sound more fun," he countered. She agreed that he was a 'little bit' handsome and charming and he reached up to try and make the space betwen her fingers bigger with his own fingers, "awe, shame your fingers don't stretch as far as you meant them to. I get what you mean, though. Don't you fret," he teased back. She laughed at the thought of the Queen running and so did he, trying not to picture it. Her sweet little feet and her hand reaching up to her hat to make sure it didn't fall. Well, in this case it'd be a crown since they were indoors and it was a big event. Will's eyes widened and Finns next remark and he shook his head. "Royalty does not hobble, dear Finn. As for the dogs," he nodded toward a portrait on the far wall with some corgis in it, "she always has two or more. If one dies she generally replaces it with a new one - after the appropriate period of mourning of course. It's very possible they're just on the other side of that door with her actually," the Queen often had the dogs at her side until the last possible second that she had to be separated from them. She asked if she'd met Ed yet and he nodded at her question of him being in school, "yes, seventh year Slytherin. Dating the Head Girl and all," he rolled his eyes, and chuckled. "He's never really been that gracious to girls I'm... friends with," he explained, remembering the time he had caught Will kissing Andy, and the time he had seen Will and Isla in the magazines and the time when - well, that was the point. "He may not even bother coming to say hi, so I'll probably have to force him." He took a sip of his drink, eyeing the crowd for one of his siblings. He spotted Susan a ways off, but didn't note on it. Lusie was here somewhere too, he was sure he'd seen the swish of her dress only a few minutes ago. But where was Ed? finn kylie nottingham

@will 12.31.2024 She resisted Will’s attempt to raise the bar she had set for him with her fingers. “There’s no stealing me away, Sir William. I came here because I wanted to,” Finn narrowed her eyes at him as she finally relented and let the gap between her fingers grow. London wasn’t all that bad either, and living there for the foreseeable future looked to be on the horizon for her. Except for the part where she was reinstated as an Auror now. That conversation hadn’t been brought up yet with Will and she didn’t plan on doing so tonight, at least not immediately. The whole first half of her day had been spent with her new investigator and MACUSA liaison and thankfully they all decided that figuring out their course of action moving forward would be better for the new year.
“How about shuffling elegantly?” she offered up instead. The only thing close to that she could imagine walking on an ice-rink without skates on. The sliding shuffle of her feet to keep from losing balance. It really was impressive that the Queen was still so independent though, and she maintained taking care of her dogs as well. “They’re probably too proper to play with Bruce, I bet,” she mused at the thought of bringing her husky around to run with the Queen’s corgis. What a sight that would be too. Her dog was one of the obnoxious, nosey kinds of husky, and while he was great to take out on a run or play fetch with, he still had an unlimited wealth of energy at almost six years old. Sometimes he was a little too dramatic about the amount of attention he got, so pitting him against the royal pooches probably wouldn’t go over all that well. And he would definitely try jumping on the Queen.
Finn didn’t really know what the Head Girl at Hogwarts was, but figured it had something to do with grades, almost like a valedictorian. Regardless, Ed had to be fairly impressive to woo the top girl at the school and Finn liked to imagine that he was a younger Will in both looks and personality. “He must be afraid one of us is going to sweep you off your feet and runaway with you,” Finn joked, following Will’s eye line, even though she had no idea what he was looking at. “I’d love to talk to him though if you manage to snag him. I feel like we could exchange information about a common party we’re involved with,” she teased, taking a long sip of her own drink to match Will’s. There were probably going to be a lot of introductions to various family members and influential no-maj political figures. Having some time to talk shop with her fellow magical people would be a break in the monotony.
