Dom and Cara had decided to spend New Years Eve together at a party at the Harrison Hotel. They were having some fancy roof party, and even though it was muggle territory it would still be a pretty cool event. Dom didn't actually mind going to muggle things, plus Cara was a half-blood so it wasn't like she didn't know them either. He wore a tight black tee, jeans, a dark jacket and low top boots. He didn't think it necessary to wear a suit or anything, the party was fancy, sure, but people hardly wore tuxes to these things anymore. Well, at least not eighteen year old guys. He waited outside of Cara's house, having just knocked on the door. He secretly hoped Kinsey would answer so he could have a moment of some torture before they left. cara june bainbridge

@dominic 12.31.2024 A New Year’s Eve party! It was the light at the end of the dark tunnel that had consumed the second half of 2024 for Cara, and finally she was able to do something for herself that wasn’t related to work. The novel was coming along, but not fast enough to call it a potential success yet, and the new job at the ice cream parlour had been sapping all of her energy over the last few weeks. Why did so many people get ice cream in the winter? She could understand coffee and hot chocolate, but ice cream? She had been guilty of that crime exactly once but was never going to be committing it again because she what it was like to be on the store’s end of it.
Tonight though, both of those things didn’t matter. Getting ready for this rooftop party took precedent, and she had completely taken over one of the upstairs bathrooms to get ready. Trying to keep the rest of the family out of her business was difficult, and the lack of three of her siblings made it much easier than it probably would have normally been. As far as they knew, she was going out with friends and Dominic was going with them. The squabbling from the triplets would never end if they knew what she really thought of her ‘friend’.
The knock on the front door had her bolting to get there first, yelling behind her that she would maybe be back late before quickly slipping out and slamming the door as she did so. There Dominic was. It felt like he should have already been out of school, but there was still a term left before that would happen. An entire year of not getting him to do what she wanted him to do. “Hey,” she said softly, failing miserably at keeping the grin on her face from forming. “Ready?”

Cara was at the door faster than he thought she'd be, and shut the door behind her. His eyes widened in surprise at her doing so, but she seemed to be determined not to let him inside. She greeted him, her grin appearing and he grinned back, "always ready for you," he confirmed. Sure his doing her bidding always had started out as an act, but that didn't mean that he didn't end up having fun with her over the years. Not just pretend but, but real fun too. Still, he definitely overdid it when they were together and laid on the charm. He held out an arm to her, "should we order a car, take transit, or just apparate?" he asked, his voice dropping a little on that last word out of habit. He was fine with any form of travel, really, but he wanted to make sure she made the decision. As usual with Cara it was all about pleasing her in order to please himself. cara june bainbridge

@dominic 12.31.2024 Dominic was really laying it on for her already, and he only said four words. Those four were enough to bring a warm fuzz to her face, causing her to look away from him and roll her eyes to deflect it. Even though she was always ordering him around, especially when she was still at Hogwarts, he still knew how to hit her in all the right places. Schmoozing it up from the beginning was definitely going to make the rest of the evening interesting, assuming he wasn’t going to let up (and if he did, she was planning on lending him a hand).
“Hmmm…” she audibly thought, tapping her index finger on her lips as she took his outstretched arm. “Apparate. But let’s do it a few blocks away. Once were at this place it’s going to be impossible to talk without yelling back and forth.” She wanted to know how his Christmas had been, and whether or not he had gotten caught up in the Hogsmeade thing a few days prior. Giving him a good once over, he looked fine.
Walking him down the front steps and out onto the sidewalk where they would be able to disapparate from, she held onto him tighter, trying to think of a place close enough to the hotel they were supposed to go to, but far enough away where they could have a meaningful conversation before getting there. “On three?” she asked, looking up to make sure he was ready, before verbally counting down the magical jump. “One, two, three-” And off she whipped them, landing in a safe alleyway near King’s Cross, roughly a ten to fifteen minute walk away from the hotel. Ruffling her hair a bit to make sure it went back to the way it was before the apparation, she clicked her tongue as a few strands fell in front of her eyes. “I’d love apparition if it wasn’t like going through a tornado each time…”

She decided on apparition and he smiled as he said she wanted to be able to talk a little first. They were quickly down the steps and she counted, "three!" he chimed at the end. Then they were there, and at her complaint he laughed, looking down at their arms to make sure they were all still intact. He placed his hand on hers for across his chest, "where would be the fun without that? I mean, I think I prefer the sensation of a portkey but that's a lot more work," he mused. He gestured forward and started to walk, leading her the direction of the hotel. "So, you're a big, bad adult now. Must be fun," he commented, not really asking a question. But he'd let her lead the conversation for the most part - that was what they always did. It was easier not to slip into something about Kinsey in that way and to not talk about something she might not like. He was there to please Cara, not only for the hilarity of her thinking he was a nice guy, but because Cara was entertaining enough to be around. It wasn't a relationship he wanted to crush because of something stupid like his distaste for her little sister. cara june bainbridge

@dominic 12.31.2024 Cara shot a disgusted look Dominic’s way at his musings of liking portkeys more. Those were infinitely worse than apparating and more dangerous. She liked knowing where she was going, and who knew if a portkey had been tampered with. Floo powder was her least favorite because it meant getting soot all over her, which obviously she wasn’t for. Cleaning spells or not, having to put extra effort in when she could pop herself in and out wherever she pleased was silly. At the end of the day, all of her grumblings meant nothing because she was still going to apparate over the other two choices.
Letting Dominic take the lead on their walk to the hotel, she silently pondered what her response to his statement would be. Was adult life fun? She had seemingly gotten the short end of the stick these last few months and had been forced to pick up an extra job just so she could buy supplies for her writing. “To be free from school, yeah, I guess so,” she squeezed his hand a little tighter, “But it’s stressful. I don’t think I realized what it was going to be like before, and now I kind of hate it.” The only person she could blame for that was herself. Cara had ignored all of the career meetings and discussions the school had about graduating and what came after; the ones that everyone else in her year had taken advantage of. Now she was going to be the laughing stock of their graduating class – a Ravenclaw that failed as a novelist and had to make up for it by working at an ice cream shop. It was a glorious future for her for sure.
“I had to get a job. A real one, because the book is moving a lot slower than I thought it would,” she paused because she was still embarrassed to tell others about her new employment. Dominic was probably going to laugh at her too. “I’m at the ice cream place in Diagon…”

She apparently didn't care for Portkeys as much as he did, and her look of disgust made him frown slightly. He was always shmoozing her, so he didn't like her looking at him like that. "Apparating with YOU isn't bad though," he suggested, an attempt at reconciliation at having brought up Portkeys at all. Thankfully the conversation moved toward her adult life and how it was nice to be free from schol, she said. She squeezed his hand as she spoke of the stress and how she didn't realize what it would be like. She said she hated it, and his jaw dropped slightly. That seemed like a strong word to him - what could she possibly hate about it? He knew adulthood came with responsibilities and lonelines, but he couldn't wait to be in control of his own life. Maybe even get an apartment that Alex could move into with him when he graduated High School. They could even travel together, if the money allowed. Aw, money. That was it. She said she had to get a real job and he raised an eyebrow, about to ask where when she paused. He let her have that moment of silence before she admitted it. He did chuckle a little, "I think that's great. Everyone wants a pretty girl serving them their ice cream. I bet it gives you a lot of time to think about the book to, so that's a good thing," he explained, trying to be encouraging. He really thought she'd do well somewhere like that, even if she did deserve something more dignified. cara june bainbridge

@dominic 12.31.2024 The distasteful look on her face was turned into an eye-roll as Dominic tried to recover from earlier statement. Of course apparating wasn’t bad with her – she was pretty damn good at it, and he got to hang onto her while they were jumping. Even without being around him constantly anymore, he was still the same old puppy dog to her. Always trying to appease her and saying what she wanted to hear. At least now he sounded like he had actual autonomy and knew how to think for himself. There were a few years there where she was seriously concerned for his well-being and ability to function on his own. She liked the way he was now. “That’s better,” she huffed, purposely bumping into his shoulder harder than she normally would.
“I’m not sure when the last time you went to Diagon Alley was, Dominic, but the customers wanting to be served ice cream by the pretty girl are total creeps,” she countered back, shivering as she recalled the one she had a few days prior. The guy was the type that stood near the entrance to the store, pretending to stare at the menu on the wall behind her cash register. Cara knew he was looking at a little more than the hundreds of ice cream flavors they had available. It wasn’t until her boss came out and called the man by his first name that he actually came up and ordered, being creepy the entire time he did so. She knew there would be some oddballs in Diagon, but having that happen in her first few weeks on the job was disturbing. “We could Polyjuice you for a day if you want to see it for yourself. It’s such a glamourous job, serving ice cream to old people missing all their teeth and screaming children.” Cara rolled her eyes as she said it. A job was a job though, and it was going to be leagues better than being a bartender or a waitress. Hopefully…

She bumped his shoulder and he pretended to stumble, but she really hadn't had an effect on him. "I promise, no more misbehaving. Well, unless it's the good kind," he joked, tossing her a suggestive wink. And why not? This is what he and Cara did. He pretended like he was her little slave dog and she was entertaining to him. Such was life. She said that the customers who wanted to be served ice cream by the pretty girl were creeps and he frowned. Was that true? He could see some creeps, sure, but surely nice people came into the shop as well and appreciated her beauty. She said that they could polyjuice him for a day and he could see it himself. "I'm sure there are other types who want ice cream too outside of the creeps, the children and the old people," he countered. "I'm not sure I could carry myself as gracefully as you, though, so maybe I'll just come order some and watch," he laughed. "That'd make me the creepy guy."They turned the corner, nearing their destination. He nodded toward the tall building, "that's the one," he pointed out. cara june bainbridge

@dominic 12.31.2024 “I left the leash at home, so it better only be the good kind,” she teased back, watching him do his fake stumble. Cara didn’t think there was any harm in joking about that, since she saw that way. Obviously Dominic was more than that to her, but she didn’t know how to quantify that into words. Putting anything into words lately, be it her book or while talking to people, had been difficult. Being able to step back and enjoy the night would be some relief from all of that and a much needed break from the new job. Even though it was simple it was more work than she was used to doing in the average day. Getting home from a shift absolutely exhausted and unable to put one word after another had been a common occurrence thus far. Her parents had even gotten used to not setting a place for her at the table for dinner. Now it was void of both twins.
Dominic pointed out that there had to be other kinds of customers that came into the ice cream shop, and she nodded in agreement. The only problem was that those ones didn’t stand out at all. She was bound to remember the annoying, obnoxious, colorful characters more than the atypical mother with her child that only wanted a bowl of vanilla ice cream. The latter were a dime a dozen on a daily basis. The former could all be characters in their own fictional worlds, dangled around by their creators like puppets on strings. Basic vanilla ice cream wasn’t enough for those folks. They required the unique flavors – the kinds that made the Fortescues famous. The ones that Vas supplied every Tuesday for her taste testing experiments. The characters that showed up on a weekly (or even daily) basis were a whole different breed, and Cara didn’t think Dominic fully understood what it was like to be behind the cash register dealing with them. “You probably would be the creepy one. The cute ones are always the creepiest, if you ask me. They somehow manage to drag you out on New Year’s to some muggle hotel for a party,” she said as they approached the building.

She said that she left the leash at home and he chuckled, "woof," he added at the end. "I'll be a good boy," he confirmed again. As she spoke about the ice cream shop and said that he would be the creepy one, due to being cute and dragging her out on New Years Eve, he kept his focal point on the building. "Well, if bringing you somewhere this glamorous is creepy than you're going to have a very creepy life my friend," he challenged, opening the door for her. The hotel was incredibly tall, almost New York tall, as far as Dominic new. It was shiny and silver and, like he'd said, glamorous. Once they were inside the decorative indoor revealed itself. White and gold was the theme, with hard tile reflective floor going through the center. He approached the man by the elevator. Whatever they were called? Doorhop or something? "The roof party, sir?" he asked. Dominic nodded, trying not to laugh at the fact that he was just called 'sir.' He presented his two tickets and the doorhop guy pressed the appropriate button in the elevator and it started to rise. cara june bainbridge

@dominic 12.31.2024 Cara reached across to pat Dominic on the head as he ‘woofed’ at her. While she was tall compared to most women, she still had to stand on her tip-toes to accomplish the feat, seeing as Dominic was freakishly tall. “If you play nice for the rest of the night, I might give you a treat later,” she stated, raising an eyebrow up at him. But that all depended on how things went at this party. If somebody even remotely reminded her of Kinsey, the mood would be dead in an instant. It was impossible to go anywhere these days without seeing some aspect of her sister’s pathetic life. She really hated it. Dominic was the only good thing left that was still sort of connected to Hogwarts aside from her siblings, so it wasn’t terrible being around him. Keeping him around wasn’t the worst thing in the world either.
“Well, I don’t know what you could do to me up on the rooftop. Maybe this is all some elaborate ploy to toss me from the top. To finally be rid of me,” she teased. “At least then nobody will have to read my terrible novel. You’d be a saint, Dominic.” Cara shut herself up as they entered the hotel though. Now they had to put on an appearance. They were here to have fun, after all, and to celebrate the New Year. Everything else could be forgotten about for a few hours. She had to bite down on her lip to keep herself from laughing when the employee at the elevator called Dominic, ‘sir’. He definitely had the air of some sort of important person tonight, with the suit and imposing manner he always walked with. As the elevator started moving up, she nudged Dominic in the side with her elbow, leaning up to whisper in his ear, “If it gets too stuffy up there, I’m sure we can find other things to do to pass the time…” Returning to her normal position next to him, she stepped forward first when the elevator reached the top floor, and to the party.
