November 2024 Claudia disappeared behind the door of an empty classroom on the 4th floor of the Hogwarts castle on that brisk Saturday afternoon in mid November. Saturdays were the days where she was able to devote the most time to dance. And Sundays, she supposed, but she thought about it the most on a Saturday, probably because she was just happy not to have to worry about school or homework that was due the next day. Sunday was always the day that she’d dance in the morning and sometimes into the afternoon, but it was also the day that she’d be staying up until 2 am doing all the homework due that week so she didn’t have to focus on it during the week. At least then she had time in the evenings for a stretch, or something.
Once inside the empty classroom, she dropped her bag down on a chair and sat down next to it while she changed from her fur lined boots into her pointe shoes. She left her hoodie and sweatpants on as she got down on the floor to stretch a bit before she got to any serious sort of work. Injury was the last thing she wanted, even with all the magical remedies at her fingertips. There was no guarantee that her ankles would bend the same ways after a break, even with a potion to heal the bone, or so she thought, at least. She was far from a medical professional.

THE THINGS ABOUT BEING SO QUIET WAS THAT it wasn't uncommon for people to forget you were ever really there. He performed exceptionally well in classes, but hardly anybody knew him, because he didn't want them to. But, it also meant that he could sneak around the castle almost unnoticed. He'd begun finding secret passageways around his third year at Hogwarts. Doors that didn't look like doors, hallways hidden behind bookcases, and alcoves that were much deeper than they looked. Nate used them to travel when he didn't want to be found, or followed.
Drawing was one of Nate's favourite things to do. It calmed him in a way that nothing ever did, losing himself in the picture of another as it progressed from nothing to something. But, he didn't like people knowing this. Like it was a weakness or something. It was one of the fair few things he was incredibly vulnerable about. Alongside his reputation. So, when he wanted to leave with his sketchbook, sometimes he took the passageways. This time, he took a wrong turn and when he squeezed through an alcove, it didn't lead to the hallway in the dungeons, it led to a classroom.
Nate thought it was empty at first, hidden from view in a corner, behind a bookcase that was conveniently pulled out, as if someone was sweeping behind it. He swiped dust from his hands, grumbling internally as he checked his precious sketchbook for scuffs and straightened himself out. That's when he heard the sound of movement in the classroom. His heart immediately stopped and he froze. It could be a professor - by which point he'd be promptly given detention for wandering in the passageways. He very quietly peered around the bookcase, holding his breath.
At first, he only saw a very long, thin limb. A leg bent in the air, coming to a severe point at one end. She was wearing ballerina shoes and he frowned, nobody danced at Hogwarts. They flew in mad circles and raved about magic, why would they ever want to dance when they could fly? Or so the story goes. Nate could have slipped away, he was very good at being invisible, but he didn't know where he'd gone wrong on the way back.
Plus, he couldn't stop watching the dancer. She wasn't dancing yet, but a part of Nate didn't want to leave until she did. He'd always wanted to draw someone in motion. If he could just see for a moment, he could catalogue it in his brain and recreate it later. It wouldn't be as good, but he could worry about that later. He went to place his sketchbook down, having decided to wait, when his silver Zippo lighter fell from the pocket of his robes. It clacked against the ground and he cringed, clenching his teeth as the sound reverberated around the room.
He could run, he thought, bent behind the cover of the bookcase, but he wasn't a coward. And he hadn't technically done anything wrong. Clearing his throat, he pocketed his lighter and slowly stepped out from behind his cover, rubbing at his nose casually as he lifted his brows in greeting. "Didn't know the space was occupied," He muttered, jaw clenching as he felt his hands warm around his large, unmistakable sketchbook. "I'll go." And then he stepped forward, as if to walk away.

Claudia hadn’t even thought to check the room before she started. She figured that if someone had been in here, she would know right away. Who hid themselves behind bookshelves? She heard the clank of the lighter and quickly whipped her head around, catching a glimpse of the boy as he reached out for it. She knew him, it was a boy in her own house and her own year, someone that she had been going to school with for years now. She rolled her eyes, “You can come out, Nate Forrester, I see you.” she announced before he stepped out and spoke, saying that he didn’t realize the room was occupied and that he would go. Claudia shrugged, she wasn’t exactly in the business of displacing people who were looking for a place to be alone. It was exactly what she was doing here. “You’re welcome to stay, but I’m not going anywhere either.” she told him. It was really up to him, if he wanted to go, he could. But, even though he had the room before she did, she didn’t know that, so it was annoying, she thought, of him to insist that she be the one to leave. She hadn’t done anything wrong.

OUT FROM HIDING NATE COULD FINALLY SEE THE dancer fully. He knew Claudia from the common room, a dozen classes and reputation alone. They weren't exactly buddies, but Nate always remembered a pretty face. Maybe that was the teenage boy in him, but he hadn't known she was a dancer. Nor that she knew his name. He was pretty invisible most of the time, unless he was blowing his competition out of the water in Potions and Charms. And while he was set to leave, he was glad when she said he could stay.
Halting by the door, Nate turned around with a slight frown on his face. "Okay," He said simply, his sketchbook heavy in his arms, but he wasn't sure about drawing in front of her. "But, I'm not dancing." He said sarcastically, crossing the room again and jumping up on one of the rickety wooden tables. He crossed his legs and set his sketchbook on top of them, his fingers itched to open it and begin drawing. He'd probably never get another opportunity like this, but he forced himself to play it cool. "I didn't know you were a dancer," He said plainly, opening up the opportunity for her to talk to him.

Claudia wasn’t looking at the guy as he began to make his way to the door. Whether he stayed or went, she didn’t have a preference, but she did feel slightly bad making him leave since he was there before she was. Either way, she wasn’t going anywhere. She was already warm and she wasn’t going to abandon her station at this point. She had committed. Plus, she wasn’t going to walk down the corridor in pointe shoes, and once her pointe shoes were on they were on until she was done. But he didn’t leave. He agreed to stay but insisted that he wasn’t going to dance. “I didn’t ask you to?” Claudia rolled her eyes. Why would she waste precious technique time trying to show someone else how to dance? How presumptuous was he to think that would? Dance lessons weren’t free. He climbed onto a table and opened a book, she didn’t get a good glimpse at it, but between turns, she noticed it’s size and that he was getting ready to write or draw in it. Was he drawing her? “Have my whole life.” She responded. “It’s why I tend to dress the way i do. And why I stand with my feet turned out.” some things were just habit. “I didn’t know you drew.” she responded, finally seeing what he was doing.

THOUGH IT WAS TRUE THAT SHE CERTAINLY HAD not asked him to join her, he still snorted like she had. "Just covering the bases." He retorted, climbing up on to the table and crossing his legs, opening his sketchbook to the page he had left it on. He considered simply completing what he had started - a cold, stern statue with oddly human eyes. Instead, he changed his mind last minute and turned to a fresh page. His charcoals he laid out on the table beside him, barely acknowledging Claudia as he did all of this, despite the fact that he really wanted to watch her dance.
"Well," Nate said dully, rubbing his thumb against the dull edge of a piece of charcoal until it stained the print. "Can't say I've looked at your feet before." Even if he had, he'd have simply assumed she was just a bit odd, like everybody else. But, she had a point, he'd definitely seen her in a leotard - or whatever it was called - once or twice in the past. But, wizards were weird, there was always a new fashion trend doing the rounds.
Looking down at his sketchbook briefly, Nate looked up and shrugged his shoulders. "Nobody really does," He remarked, though that was slightly untrue as he'd exposed himself once or twice unintentionally. "It's my business." He muttered, but he didn't try and hide it now. Mostly, he just didn't like the idea of people asking to see the things that he drew. Sometimes he showed it off, but for the most part it was for him. Plus, people were oddly judgemental about creative ventures. Like their opinion singularly mattered. He disagreed completely.

Her reasoning was slightly lost on him, she supposed it was easier to notice such things if you were looking for them. She found herself watching the way that people stood and how they moved, but that was because she was curious if anyone else had a similar interest to her, though she had never seen another wizard in any of her classes before, and she had taken class all around the country. While she had a regular studio in London, she wanted as many professionals as possible to coach her, that way she’d get the best of everyone’s wisdom. Nate the remarked that no one really knew he drew because it was his business, Claudia smirked, “Kind of like how dancing is mine? Though you asked, so you can’t blame me for asking in return.” she teased. She turned on the barre, beginning to swing her other leg up and back, loosening her hips to aid her turn out. “I suppose it’s easy to assume that no one else here has interests outside of magic.” she admitted.

NATE HAD TO ADMIT TO HIMSELF, HE HADN'T expected Claudia to be as quick as she was. She surprised him, leaving him speechless for a moment as she smirked knowingly. "Yeah, but you didn't have to answer." Nate retorted after a moment, his smile deceptively cheery, gesturing with one hand as he balanced his sketchbook on his lap. "I'm... flexing my right to free speech." This was extra, which he hadn't needed to add, but she had gotten him going at this point. He couldn't help but run his mouth for a minute.
Though, didn't drop his head again immediately, watching her swing her legs instead. "Are you gearing up to kick me?" He teased, quirking his brows as he watched her move gracefully, even as she was simply stretching. But, she made a good point. Everyone assumed that magic was the only viable interest, and Nate understood why. It held the most merit, and would probably be the only thing that mattered for him down the line, should he wish to succeed. But, he still struggled to let go of his silly little muggle venture. "Heaven forbid," He commented, smiling ruefully as he twirled a piece of chalk between his fingers. "Though, everything's better with magic, right?"

Claudia hadn’t expected that she would like talking to him, she usually didn’t want to talk when was stretching or going to do any sort of ballet, it wasn’t like people talked during ballet class, so it wasn’t really something that she was used to. Talking in class would be disrespectful to the madam or master leading the class and was a one way ticket to getting yourself kicked out. However, Claudia was a social girl and always like a nice, verbal back and forth that was up to her level and didn’t require her to wish that stabbing people was legal or more widely accepted. While she wasn’t looking at him, she could feel him looking at her while she did her stretch, and her feeling was confirmed when he asked if she was getting ready to kick him. She smirked, “I guess you’ll just have to watch your back now, just in case.” she wasn’t usually a violent person, she had her moments, but for the most part the innocent students of the castle were safe from the snake. He then commented that everything was better with magic and she smirked, glancing over to him slightly, seeing him with the chalk in his hand. “Is it?” she quizzed.

THOUGH HE WAS SURE THAT CLAUDIA WAS joking back with him, there was something decidedly wicked about the graceful swing of her legs. And her smile, titled and full of mischief said to Nate that she was perfectly capable of such a thing should he annoy her a little too much. And he so enjoyed getting under people's skin, his innocence might be a difficult thing to maintain. Especially when it came to the superiority of magic. He scoffed openly at her quizzical expression.
"Yes." He said succinctly. There was no question or room for movement in his tone. "I've been around Muggles," He said with a superior tilt to his chin. "They're not that special." In fact, he often found them undeniably dull and stiff in their beliefs. It was the core reason for most of his distaste for his own parentage. They had been presumed Muggles who had promptly given him up. He'd spent the beginnings of his life carted from foster home to foster home before he began displaying an affinity for magic. He had then been admitted to the orphanage that catered to children just like him. And he'd lived there ever since.

Claudia didn’t disagree with him, she loved being a witch and being able to use magic whenever she wanted to, even if she didn’t have to use it very often. She did feel a little superior to muggles in that way, but she didn’t boast about it, her family weren’t really that kind of people. However, Claudia was already a snob. Why shouldn't she be proud of her abilities? “I think so too, for the most part.” she nodded. The only thing that a muggle had done that Claudia thought was still better without magic was dance, ballet with magic would be a lot less about technique and skill, it would be more about the grace at which you charmed yourself to move the way you were supposed to. There was something satisfying about using her physical body for something instead of relying on her magic for it. “I guess art is a different story, though.” she shrugged, wondering if he often used magic on his art.

'FOR THE MOST PART', WAS PERHAPS NATE'S least favourite sentiment. It gave too much room for doubt and he narrowed his eyes at Claudia to convey his utter distaste. His lip curling as if he'd smelled something rotten. "Oh, really?" He said with heavy derision. "What can they do that we can't?" Nate's tone held such a level of scorn that it had to be attached to his past. He'd felt the burden of incompetency in his youth. Had come from it, for all he knew. And they'd left him to the wild as if he were an old pair of shoes, or a broken chair.
"Art?!" Nate's exclamation came as a shock and he was quick to bark and hard, "Ha!" In answer to his own echo. "There's ain't nothing they can do that we can't do better." Nate was so sure of himself that he let his legs swing off the end of the table, as if he were going to go to bat with Claudia just for insinuating that the arts belonged to the Muggles.
"You ever seen a half veela dance?" He asked, though he hadn't either, he reckoned it'd be a sight to see. Far beyond the mediocrity of Muggle shows. "You ever watched a wizard paint a whole town with just the tip of his wand?" Nate was now off the table, his sketchpad abandoned, his hands gripping the table edge. "We are superior." He made himself relax in to the table again, trying to look cool and unaffected once more, even going so far as to shrug carelessly. "That's just the facts, darling."

The annoying thing about this conversation was, Claudia wasn’t trying to defend muggles being superior in anyway, in fact, she agreed with him, as she had already mentioned. And she wouldn’t have cared that he continued with his reasoning, except he was being condescending now, and Claudia wasn’t going to have any of that. She was a pureblood from a good family just as he was, there was no reason for his tone towards her. She stopped swinging her leg, and turned to face him. That Veela comment made her blood boil for reasons she wouldn’t get into now. “Ooh, a little temper huh?” she shook her head, her arms now folded over her chest. “Maybe I hit a nerve.” she scoffed. “Lucky for you, I find this sort of behavior attractive.” it was true, she did like when men were a little… well… assertive? Aggressive? Either way. But the point here wasn’t exactly to flirt as much as just throw him off so she could stop dealing with it.

FOR NATE, THE FACT THAT WIZARDS WERE THE superior being was important. It let him believe that he was better than his past. And that they were worse for leaving him. He had always been led to believe that he was a muggle-born. A 'mudblood' as they used to say. If muggles were better than them at something, then why couldn't they raise their own f*cking kids. That's what Nate thought, but he didn't say all of that to Claudia. In fact, he tried to draw himself back at her cool expression. Feeling unkempt under her cool and assessing gaze.
"Temper?" He said stiffly, though his expression lost a bit of its scorn. "I prefer to call it a debate." His head tilted to one side. He hadn't run her off with his mad rant. In fact, she looked far more interested than she had just ten minutes prior. Something like an idea. Her sleek tone dripping with something a little bit sweeter than deserved. "What so..." He tongued his teeth, trying to hide the slight smirk that was threatening to overcome his face. He had to keep appearances, after all. "You want me to yell at you..?" He cocked one brow, drawing his bottom lip in to his mouth. "Or, tell you what to do?"

Claudia was fairly sure that she had surprised him by staying and turning more attention to him, but that was part of her charm. She liked to keep people on their toes. She wasn’t exactly the fragile little ballerina that most people thought she was after seeing her dance. But anyone who interacted with her knew that already. Claudia was far from soft. Claudia rolled her eyes, “no I don’t want you to yell at me. But passion is sexy.” and he was certainly passionate about whatever he was talking about. How muggles we’re inferior or something. She barely remembered. “there is nothing better than a man who isn’t afraid to hold his beliefs.” she smirked.
