"I don’t care what they’ve said," Yvonne suddenly huffed at him, coming to a stop. She asked him if he wanted the truth, and—before Brody could give an answer to that—she said that they were right.
Right? About…
"I did hurt that second year, and drove that first year Ilvermorny transfer into tears. I’ve stolen happiness from them the same way I had mine robbed. And you know what? I enjoyed it. So I don’t need you to convince anyone or try to save my name. You couldn’t hurt me the same way the next person could try. I would just hurt you first."
"Vonni…" Brody's voice broke in his disbelief, and he shook his head as if that would reverse what he had just heard her say, her confession that maybe she really was the monster that everyone else was claiming that she was. That wasn't her, he thought. She was funny and as smart as a whip; she wasn't someone who bullied people. No… She couldn't have done all of that…
Even if she had done what she was claiming that she actually had done, and even if those rumors about her had some truth to them, there wasn't anything that said that Yvonne had to continue that way. She could turn things around, Brody thought. He didn't mind helping her to do that, especially when he had been coming to her defense all this time.
Knowing what to say next, however, was the hard part. She had done what she had, she said, because her happiness had been stolen from her. It hurt Brody to hear her say that, and it was one of the reasons why he had been so glad to come to Hogwarts. He had wanted to be by her side through the bad stuff, too. He wasn't going to give up on her so easily. Brody didn't think that he could do that to anyone—but especially not her.
Finally, he swallowed and continued behind her so that he might catch up to Yvonne again. "I'm not scared of you, Yvonne," he told her, "and I'm not gonna run away like some little first-year." It would take more than that to drive him off, and he wished that Yvonne could only see that. "Maybe it feels good to push people away," he acknowledged, despite never having felt that way himself, "or… put up walls… or something…" Whatever it was that described her attempts at distancing herself from others, that was what he meant. "But I'm here," he promised her, "and I'll be here."
And I wish you could see how much you mean to me, because… No, Brody thought, he couldn't say that out loud. He couldn't say that part about liking her, especially not after her confession to him. Maybe it was better just to leave well enough alone.
