17TH DECEMBER 2024
When the term dates were handed over to the newly Sixth Year back in September, Sari Fawley felt nothing but joy to know classes would end on December 21st. It felt like a perfect time to settle into the Christmas mood and come up with little white lies as to why she had no gifts for any of her siblings just as yet. Even if the truth was in relation to: A) Sari having the plans to spend her pocket change in Hogsmeade and B. she was thinking of her own presents. Typical. Though the blonde was returning home for Christmas like many others, she still wanted to enjoy her last few days alongside her friends, notably Elijah. She met the elder Hufflepuff during early September when all of the Ilvermorny students were first preparing themselves for schooling and was ultimately paired with him from the Buddy System. Her attempt at pairing with Jace Hunter didn’t go…Notably well after a while.
Unsure of his plans for the upcoming break, Sari spent the early morn of Tuesday bugging Eli, making him promise to meet her near the chicken coup not too far from the greenhouses of Herbology, where he had almost lost one months before. Sari of course, saved his life. As she walked closer, Sari slowed her pace thinking as to how she was going to tell him…Everything? Months of wondering only made you a tad crazy. For the Fawley, things had always been complicated. Family wise, school wise and even now…Her entire relationship and sexuality fell into a world of frenzy. Fifth year brought upon one of the strangest moments of the blondes life. She had never imagined herself being shoved into an alcove with barely any air to breathe, back pressed against the ridges of different books while her face felt like millimetres away from Nathaniel Forrester’s. Plus. He was kind of cute. How couldn’t she not kiss him? …And then hook up with him…
As her feet crushed into the snow covered grass, teeth snagged in the blonde’s bottom lip, chewing out of anxiety. To Sari, Eli was that kind of friend she could tell anything, minor, major things but she had never…Told anyone about her situation with Nate. Whatever it was. As she sighed, blue eyes watched her breath disappear into the clouded sky while her mind pulled together the words she would repeat to Eli.

THE AIR WAS ICY AND ELI STILL HADN'T HAD THE heart to take his scarf back from Ashley. Instead, he had to roll his robes up around his throat as he peered in to the chicken coup, waiting for Sari. She'd been especially persistent recently, be it because they would soon split off from Hogwarts for the holidays, or because she had something pressing to tell him, he wasn't sure. Sari had a way of acting as if something very small was something very large. 'Making mountains out of gnome hills', his mom might have said.
Their meeting felt almost clandestine, and Eli kept looking around expectantly as he waited. She was late, of course. And he was feeling a little snippy as he bent over the coup, peering in to one of the mesh covered windows to the chickens huddled inside. He spoke with them like old friends, finding pieces of bird seed on the ground and feeding it through the mesh gaps to distract himself. He was so consumed by this task that he almost missed Sari when she crept up behind him.
"Sh-!" Eli cursed, straightening so quickly that he bumped his head off the lip of the chicken coup's roof. Rubbing it, he hissed through his teeth and frowned at his short little friend. "You're late," He grumbled, pulling his hand away to leave a great many strands of his dark hair standing up at attention. Crossing his arms, he tried to keep his scowl in place, but it fell when he saw the look on Sari's face. She looked pale and drawn, practically jittering with whatever she had to tell him. "Oh no... what's happened?" He asked seriously, his lips pursed.

GRINNING, SARI FAWLEY reached up to run her fingers through her friend’s hair, in the area he bumped his head in. No body had asked Eli to feed the chickens in the coup, especially since one chicken had brought absolute chaos for Eli the last time the two huddled around the area. With lips parted, the quiet sounds of a coo leaving her lips, she ruffled his dark locks, until confusion ran across her facial expressions, especially at his quiet grumbles. Lateness was one thing Sari didn’t believe in nor did she think she could ever be late. Aside from morning classes or Laurel’s classes of course. Her sister tend to let her terrible punctuality slip through her fingers, just like many other things. Slipping grades, talking too much…A lot of things.
”I’m not late.” She grumbled, her hand lowering while her tone mocked the way he spoke except she held herself with a wide grin on her lips. The Fawley knew Eli could read her like a open book, even if it proved to be difficult at times with the way words rolled off the blonde’s tongue. Sari cleared her throat, curls falling over her shoulder as her head turned to the side, averting her gaze away from her friend. ”It’s…Old news. But I’m frightened.” Nate seemed to only…Approach Sari during the worst of times, summer being proof of their…situation-ship. Sure, the two had passed one another, shared classes and further exchanges but with the blonde avoiding him…It caused a form of strain. ”You and I didn’t know each other back then, since you were…Still in America. But I just…” Sari drew a sigh, running a hand through her hair.
”I’ve been so confused. Where this thing…With this person is going. Why it even happened in the first place. Then there goes my sexuality…” Trailing off seemed to be best, since the blonde’s thoughts fell into a jumble of words, trying to piece them together before she lost all trail of thought. ”Did I mention I kissed a girl? And might of liked it?” The muggle reference was Sari’s intention to bring a laugh out of Eli and herself, but the small smile her lips forced was enough.

HE SQUINTED ONE EYE SHUT AND LEANED IN TO Sari's soothing palm. As if he were a dog. She'd always been the handsy type, never too concerned with getting in other peoples space. Eli didn't mind so much. He'd long since gotten used to her little mannerisms. Afterwards, he lowered himself to the ground, betting comfortable in a flattened patch of grass, his back to the wire coup as he stared at Sari expectantly.
Old news or new, Eli was willing to listen. He crossed his legs and parked his arms on his knees, lips pursed and waiting. And then his brows furrowed in confusion and concern. "Of what?" He asked, sitting forward. Sari had snatched his attention completely and he worried after her. Had she gotten herself in to trouble? He leaned back with a sigh as she spoke. She wasn't hurt, at least not physically. But, she did look very conflicted. That explained why she'd appeared as she had. Demanding their meet-up.
"That's... a lot of information to take in one go." Eli said at first, leaning forward to plant his chin on his hands as he thought for a second about what to say. After a moment, he lifted his head and turned to face her. "So, the girl you kissed." Eli began, completely unfazed by the idea that she might've liked it. Eli had kissed a couple of boys in his time. He operated under the mentality that as long as it was fun, do what you like. "She's... not the person making you scared?" That, for Eli, seemed to be the most important thing on his mind. Though he added, leaning side-ways to nudge her shoulder with mine. "It's no big deal you know, I've kissed a boy before." As casually as could be.

AS HUMAN AS ELI WAS, Sari always wondered if the Fleming boy was an animal in his previous life. She found it utterly adorable though, the way he leaned into her hand for the pets she provided. Months before now, the blonde knew she couldn’t be this comfortable with the Hufflepuff, but she was glad he had warmed up to her so quickly. Once he lowered himself, Sari’s hand soon dropped and eventually her body too, legs stretching out while her fingers fell into the icy strands of the grass. It felt silly, to bring up such an old event months ahead now, but the scenario still felt pretty large for the Fawley. Nathaniel had been the first person she slept with in her life, and now her mind was muddled, all over the place.
”Is it stupid or cliché to say everything? I’m literally afraid of everything.” Her exams for the following year, time picking up and soon enough she’d be like Eli, choosing his course of direction for his future career, her failed relationships being cut short and her sexuality following into another year of confusion. The reminder of the girl Sari had kissed was never going to die out. Like an eternal flame, the thought would never disappear from her mind as the girl she had kissed was one of Sari’s closest friends. Jimmie Blishwick. They found some balance in their friendship, bickering like the next person, competing for test scores and simple relaxation. But when Sari confided in the Gryffindor about Nate…One thing led to another and she only hoped their friendship wasn’t at stake. ”God no.” She responded to his question. As their shoulders collided, the blonde’s lips grew in size, forming a smile.
”I already know. You didn’t stop going on about that one guy until like a week ago.” It was exaggeration at its finest, but Eli was typical like that. ”The girl isn’t the problem here. She’s…Great. Would definitely kiss again.” Even if their clash of teeth had ruined the occasion for a moment or so, Jimmie wasn’t exactly a bad kisser. ”It’s someone else…A certain…Slytherin…” Looking away as she trailed off, Sari sat up, arms crossing to rest upon her knees while her hands joined together. ”It was stupid, a situation read wrong that led one thing onto another. And now I think I’m maybe hooked for him?— As gross as it sounds.”

IT WAS ODD FOR ELI TO LOOK AT SARI AND imagine she was afraid. She didn't usually look it. Always readily throwing barbs at him, forcing him to attend classes he hated, but needed. She pushed him, but was afraid of something? Not possible. And yet, there was such a shining hesitation in her face that he couldn't help but believe her. "Wow..." He muttered, his brows reaching towards his hairline, his lips pouted out thoughtfully. "You can't tell." He offered, hoping to make her feel a little better about her image. He knew that that was the first of thing Sari worried about, for some reason.
"Shut up!" Eli whined, knocking her ankle with his foot as he crossed his arms haughtily. He'd been trying to make her feel better, and she couldn't resist making life a little bit difficult for him. "That's a total lie." He grumbled, dipping his chin before grinning wickedly. "Plus, we're talking about you, remember?" It was a chilly reminder and he knew she was suffering from something. He just didn't know if it was love or regret. Eli regretted few things in his life, apart from maybe his latest Charms homework. "A Slytherin..." Eli pretended to scoot ever closer, their bodies lining up from shoulder to heel as he made a show of straining his ear towards her. "Please, tell me more..."
Eli didn't know that many Slytherin's. He spent so much time with his Hufflepuff friends that sometimes he forget there were even other houses. Apart from Ashley though, his stomach twisted at the thought of her. But, half the time, he struggled to even distinguish between all of the houses. He worried about other things most of the time. "Sounds messy," Eli interjected, uncrossing his arms to lay them lazily across his thighs. "I mean, is he a good guy, at least?" His brows drew together, as if he already knew the answer.

OPENING UP TO ANYONE ASIDE from her siblings was something the Fawley found difficult to do. Eli had only been a student at Hogwarts for a few months now, but it felt like the two had been friends for years. She smiled at his thoughtful reply, at least she was great in one aspect — hiding her true feelings when she needed to. His whines and even the knock to her ankle distracted her momentarily, until the reality of it all sank in again. Was she really falling for someone like the Forrester? It was reckless and perhaps even stupid to do so, considering he gave no one the time of day, or only done so when he pleased. ”Can we talk about you instead?” She smiled, trying to avoid the situation the multiple times she had done so before.
”Well…He’s a sixth year. Troublesome kid.” What else was there to actually describe? That the two honestly hated one another and randomly kissed in an alcove? Before doing it again a couple of other times? And even making regrettable choices during the summer? Biting down on her lip, Sari forced out a huff of a smile at Eli’s interjection. ”Right like always.” She pointed out. It was incredibly messy. Nathaniel was rude, a harsh guy but Sari always found herself wrapped around his pinky finger. ”Barely a good guy.” She responded, her hand raising to push some of her blonde locks away from her face. ”I think he was arrested over the summer or something? Just after things…happened I guess.”

THOUGH SHE ATTEMPTED TO SHRUG OUT FROM under his sudden attention, Eli didn't let her. He knew how much Sari liked talking about herself sometimes, so if she was avoiding doing so, well it must be pretty good. And maybe he was a little worried. He shimmied closer to her, shaking his head with a thin lipped smile, his expression completely focused one what she had to say next.
As he listened, Eli's brows pulled together. He wasn't convinced, and the way that Sari talked about him, it was almost as if she didn't even like him. Like she couldn't think of anything nice to say at all. Eli gnawed on the inside of his cheek to stop himself from interrupting her, a million responses doing a spin in his head. "Okay..." He said after a second, turning his face away to watch the night sky roll in. "So he's... like a felon...?" Eli's brows were lifted in disbelief and mild shock. "He doesn't even sound 'barely' good."
With a heavy sigh, Eli couldn't help but let a spiel of honesty roll from his mouth. "I gotta be honest, Sari-" He turned to face her, eyes wide. "But, what the hell are you doing with a guy like that?!" He gestured with one hand, baffled at her torn expression. "Dump him!" He declared, as if it were that easy. "I mean- how did you even meet a guy like that?!" With a harsh scoff, he shook his head and lifted his chin skyward. "No wonder your scared, dude."

SARI HAD ALWAYS NOTICED ELI’S attempts to change topics whenever the subject involved him and the seriousness of seventh year and it always frustrated the blonde whenever he did it. But when the roles were reversed, Eli remained calm, and kept the conversation going — while ultimately refusing the opportunity for the Fawley to drop it. As much as she loved Eli, she hated how stubborn he was, and how damn friendly he had always been. Her description of Nate didn’t seem to win him over though, but instead maybe draw concern. Nathaniel wasn’t a good guy…At all. Which was one of the confusing factors Sari faced when it came to liking him. How could she like someone like him? Pent up with anger and nothing else to express?
”No! —Jesus Eli, no.” But in fairness…Nate had gotten into trouble over the summer, and the remembrance of it pulled a frown on the Fawley’s lips. ”It’s nothing like that. He’s just…Misunderstood. I don’t even know if the arrest part is the truth or not. I’ve been somewhat avoiding him for the longest time since summer.” Since…Her mistake anyway. Sleeping with Nathaniel wasn’t the best of choices Sari had for herself. As Eli turned to her, spouting out loud nonsense as to how Sari should dump Nate, she felt the frown disappear, the slightest appearance of a grin taking over. Thank God she wasn’t actually dating the Forrester. ”We’re not dating!” She clarified. ”I just made…Many mistakes with him and now I’m just kind of…torn?” She added, ruffling her hair once more. ”I guess we kind of just…Met here. In Hogwarts. I’ve always found him annoying…And rude…And maybe vice versa on his behalf…”

THE SHOCK ON ELI'S FACE WAS OBVIOUS. HE made no attempt to hide it as he stared openly at Sari. "Please say sike..." He mumbled, shaking his head at her. "I mean, are you hearing yourself?" Eli wasn't naturally judgemental. He always had a way of understanding something when somebody confided in him. But, this was different. Once, Sari had dragged him by the ear to a tutoring class because she cared about him.
"Misunderstood!" Eli snorted, throwing his head back and barking a laugh. "I think I understand him pretty well." He lifted his hands and made a banner with both as he drawled, "Bad News..." Eli had figured Sari had bad taste a while back. She liked giving advice, but never taking it. She could make fun of him, but couldn't always take it back. She was... sort of sensitive. Why was he so surprised she'd found some dead end to focus all of that energy on to?
"Okay..." Eli sighed, scrubbing a hand through his hair as his messy brain tried to make sense of what she was telling him. He was oddly relieved they weren't dating. "At least you're not dating." He shook his head, staring down at her hopelessly. "I thought I was stupid." And he snorted, unable to help himself. Eli couldn't stay too serious for too long. "My advice?" He lifted his brow towards his hairline. "Run a mile." Crossing his arms, he turned his head and shrugged. "We're not that confusing." He told her, feeling a bit sorry for her all of a sudden. "And when we are, it's usually... not a good sign."

SIKE WAS A WORD SARI wanted, needed and craved to say but the blonde spouted nothing but truthfulness. The truth was all Sari could yell or scream out unless she was talking with one of her siblings. It was easy to lie to the ones you grew up with sometimes, but she couldn’t piece together how nor why. ”I know how it sounds…” The Fawley trailed off, turning to avoid the look Eli gave her. She knew she was…dirty-dancing with a fuckboy. But it didn’t decrease how badly attracted she was to him. Sometimes she considered if the ways Nate treated Sari attracted her to him even more…”I just don’t know what it is. He has some kind of…spell or something on me.” Or more so, she found herself drifting back to him whenever the two seemed to be alone.
”No!” She piped up, in an attempt to defend Nate…Yet again. ”He’s misunderstood. I don’t know much about his past but a lot of people say he’s been through a lot…” Sari looked down at Eli then, her fingers rubbing against her temples as she tried to think. She couldn’t think. All she could think about was Nate, and while she was somewhat avoiding him again she wanted to be near him. Which was fairly easy since they were both sixth years. All she could…think about was the guilt she felt, sleeping around with him and avoiding him, confused if she hated him or liked him.
Sari shook her head along with him. It was a miracle she wasn’t dating Nate. If she had put her all in…Sari knew she probably would never give up at attempting to become his girlfriend, no matter how often Nate would state he probably wasn’t interested. Sari hated giving up, it simply wasn’t in her nature anymore. ”You are stupid.” She grinned, tapping at his forehead. His advice only made Sari frown slightly, what if she didn’t want to run? He had some points though, women always hid emotions through complications, giving them the stereotypes that they were confusing, too emotional or sensitive, (which suited Sari perfectly), but Nate showed her new levels of confusion. ”I’ve been running. Not literally but, I avoid him all the time. Focus on classes and all that jazz.”

ELI WASN'T EXACTLY TRAINED AT READING people's faces, but he knew what Sari wasn't saying. Without even looking at her. Her silence was deafening. With a shake of his head, he sighed, fiddling with the hem of his frayed pant leg. He'd stepped on it at some point and there was a very obvious tear. Cali would have called him a slob. When Sari finally did speak, it filled him with nothing but dread. She made excuses, scrambling to explain why and how she could be feeling as she was.
"Sounds like dragon shit to me," Eli said, pulling his knees up and resting his cheek on the cap, his pants rough on his wind chilled skin. "Why are you defending him?" He asked with genuine curiosity, sniffing in clear distaste. "I'm all for giving people the benefit of the doubt, dude." He shrugged his shoulders. "Just doesn't seem like there's much benefit and a lotta doubt." Eli wasn't sure if that made any sense, but it sounded profound in his head. He tried to be stern, but it didn't work. She flicked his forehead and he laughed.
"You got me," He admitted, feeling no insult at Sari's plain explanation of him. But he drew in a deep breath and interjected, "But that just proves that I'm right!" He straightened up and knocked her so hard with his shoulder that they almost toppled over. "I know stupid. Like knows like, and all that." He shrugged his shoulders, as if that was explanation enough. "You're wasting your time."
But, there was a resolution on Sari's face that made Eli uneasy. For some reason, he knew he'd be having this conversation again at some point. "Do you want me to be your blocker?" He raised his brows seriously. "Gimme a signal when you're about to make a bad choice and I'll- I'll give you an even better bad choice to make." He smiled at her hopefully. "We can chase chickens, or I'll even let you tortu- tutor me."

IF HOGWARTS WAS GIVING OUT awards to the biggest clown of every year….Sari Fawley knew she would win for the Sixth Years. She felt stupid, confessing what felt like a dirty secret to her newly best friend but at the same time…The Fawley felt like there was some sort of relief from it all. The blonde couldn’t help but snort at Eli’s retort, looking away with a weak smile. It was dragon shit. She kept defending a person who barely spoke to her. ”I’m not..! Defending him…!” She squeaked, looking down at her feet.
Sari sighed then, considering everything Eli was saying was nothing but truth. ”Too much doubt…” One of the many million reasons she couldn’t come out and confess to Nate. Hence why fooling around was perfectly fine. Or so the Fawley thought anyway. Flicking Eli’s forehead seemed to lighten the mood between them though and Sari was nothing but thankful to have the Seventh Year in her life. ”You’re not riiiiight!” She drawled out, her hand reaching up to rub where his shoulder hit. ”You?…Know what it’s like to like someone else? My small boy Eli?” Sari was joking then, even going as far to lift her hand to cover her mouth.
While Sari appreciated the gesture, she knew taking Eli up on the offer was another job she pushed her friends further for. She even felt bad discussing her feelings too much in one day. Well. Most times. But the Fawley raised her brow at him then, her small smile turning into a smirk. ”Were you…Going to say torture? Did you want to be hit again?”

DESPITE SARI'S VEHEMENT REPLY ELI KNEW SHE was bolstering. Her gaze dropped to her feet, like she couldn't bear to agree with him, but Eli didn't press it any further. He'd made his point, she could pretend she disagreed with him if she wanted. So he stood there, uncharacteristically quiet. And eventually, of course, she agreed with him. Eli lifted his brows in response, a barely contained smirk on his face as he basked in self satisfaction. He wouldn't rub it in, he would not rub it in.
"My small boy body is full of wisdom." He drawled, his eyes alight with laughter. At the very least, she didn't look on the verge of tears any more, which was a vast improvement. But he would help her if she needed it. Eli had grown to really like Sari, in all her chaotic glory. She didn't deserve to be messed around by some loser, moody kid. Curling his knees up, Eli snickered as he pretended to flinch away from her. "I said no such thing!" He exclaimed, leaning on his arm as he fell down on his side. "But, I have to say, tutoring would be a very effective form of torture." And for a moment, the drab atmosphere lifted and they were just two friends trading jabs on the uncut grass.
