the middle of an anxious sea. THE NIGHT OF 6TH JANUARY 2025 OR MIDNIGHT OF 7TH JANUARY... CRINUS MUTO HAD been Zenevieva’s closest friend for the day until the Novell reunited with her best friend Kaylee. Over the winter break, Zen decided a change was in order. She had brought it up to her friend Steve Kolstad, a half-vampire like herself and he too pushed her into the change she desired. The cutting of her long brunette locks followed by the old Muggle style of dyeing her hair started the change. Her aunt Adèle helped, gloved hands rubbing bleach and the ash colour of blonde into the Novell’s scalp. It was kind of exciting for the half-vampire. She remembered looking at the final result with widened eyes. The same green orbs couldn’t believe what she could see. Her hair, now dry, sat slightly above her shoulders — her darkened roots out of sight, instead replaced with the light colour she was so used to seeing with her aunt, her uncle and even her father. But with the first day of school returning, she didn’t really want to frighten anyone just yet. Or bring the attention to herself…Just yet.
A new year meant for a new Zen, one that could potentially rid herself of her stutter and even stand up to her old bullies. Maybe. When she waved goodbye to her aunt on from King’s Cross Platform, Zen searched for a booth before relaxing in an empty one, noticing the loudness of younger children passing by as they ran to the others. The Novell couldn’t remember if she shared it with anyone, considering she fell asleep. Though the welcoming reunion passed by like a blur and the same with morning and afternoon classes. By lunch, Zen fell into boredom and ultimately found herself writing an owl with a promise she made with Daniel McKay during their Blishwick date. A midnight adventure together. With the potential to catch the most seahorses. Zenevieva knew she was going to win. Or believed she could.
There she sat in the Courtyard, at the stroke of midnight, hiding within the shadows every time a Professor or even a Prefect came around to perform a nightly check, seeking any students to hand out simple detentions to. As a half-vampire, awake during the night was normal for the Novell, especially under the bright rays of the moonlight. The moon was one of Zen’s favourite sights. Aside from the planets she looked upon in Astronomy classes. Though, in comparison to the day where she hid her new self, she sat comfortably, her blonde hair in sight while her fingers thumbed at the page of her new book. It was a novel needed for her History of Magic class, one she had read many times but when she heard the slightest noise in her midst, Zen’s head whipped around. With her fingers she pushed against the spine of her novel, closing it quietly.
Zen stood, closing herself into the shadow just a little more, the same way she did so when the Professors and Prefects walked by. What she didn’t expect to see was a familiar face walk close by to the Court Yard, one that left her with widened eyes. Daniel. Zen reached out once he kept walking, pulling him in where the shadows would hide the two of them, letting the wandering Professors go by. ”Hi.” She smiled after they went on by. @crimson1 & hopefully this works!

Daniel packed up his things one last time as the Christmas break from Hogwarts drew to a close. Most students were getting up from their beds at home and getting ready. Daniel was closing up his magical tent which had been placed at a park near the King’s Cross platform. It was wooded enough that no one noticed him. He had always expected someone to notice it or him in some of the places he had set up his temporary home but it never happened. With everything now back in his pack Daniel made his way toward the train station. This certainly wasn’t the life he had imagined for himself but at the end of the day it was just like being back at his fathers, even better as they didn’t have to see each other. He was either left alone or completely ignored when his father was around. This way just felt easier, more freedom.
Arriving at the station around the time most others had Daniel ducked around the groups of families saying their goodbyes. It was annoying and he was mildly jealous but more content than he had been when he had come back for summer break. It still angered him that his father couldn’t even bother to show to pick him up. Knowing him he had both forgotten and didn’t care. Either way that was in the past. Daniel has survived being alone both for the summer and Christmas breaks, all the proof he needed that he didn’t need to return to his fathers place. Also with his next return trip here being after he graduated he wouldn’t need to ever again. Daniel boarded the train quickly just to get out of the crowd of people, the longer he was around them the more annoyed he became and Daniel was aware of that.
Returning to Hogwarts wasn’t nearly as bad as it had been last year. With the Ilvermorny student body here he welcomed coming back. Sure it wasn’t Ilvermorny but at the same time it at least had the people he knew. That and he couldn’t go back to Ilvermorny anyway as it was damaged. So far this year he had enjoyed Hogwarts rather than hating almost every second like his past year. Part of that hate was from being forced to move also. His first day back at Hogwarts was easy as most first days were. Just getting settled in and seeing a few familiar faces. When asked about his Christmas break he kept it very vague. Aside from one or two people no one was aware Daniel had technically ran away from home for the past year. There wasn’t much anyone could do about it now that he was back at school but it was for the best that not too many people knew about it.
It was a surprise when around midday an owl came looking for Daniel with a letter. He hadn’t been expecting anyone to write him and he certainly hoped it wasn’t his father. The letter was actually from Zen which was just as much as a surprise as getting a letter in the first place. She was taking him up on her promise to wander around after midnight. He figured he would have to remind Zen a couple of times before it happened, if it happened at all. She wrote where to meet, at the courtyard of the school. It wasn’t too hard to get around after dark at Hogwarts as long as you could avoid the patrol of professors and prefects.
Just before midnight Daniel snuck out of the common room. The only real concern was waking up then portrait that blocked the exit. Thankfully she wasn’t asleep but instead gone completely. He regretted being all the way on the top of the caste and now having to sneak all the way to the bottom. At least Zen’s common room wasn’t as high as his. He was lucky as most of the floors of the stairs seemed to be giving him a break, that or they were asleep somehow and just didn’t move. Either way he made it down just after midnight. He didn’t see Zen anywhere obvious as he walked into the courtroom. He thought he heard a professor or someone coming before being suddenly pulled into a darker corner. He was about to say something in the moment of surprise before stopping himself. He didn’t need to get caught now. Daniel was shocked to find it was Zen who pulled him closer into the dark corner while a professor walked on by. After they passed she said hi. Daniel was just continually surprised. First by the owl then, being pulled out of no where and now there was a blonde Zen greeting him. ”See, now I’m not even sure you’re the same person. The old Zen never would have done half of this, she also wasn’t blonde which doesn’t look bad at all.” He joked quietly as he wasn’t sure if it was totally safe just yet. ”Then again you do still have a book on you so you must be Zen after all.”

the middle of an anxious sea. THE DARKNESS WAS ONE place Zenevieva loved most. As a half-dark creature, while the sun didn’t burn the Novell to a crisp, she strangely felt more alive at night. Her wises choices came from ridiculous times within the night, whether or not she wandered amongst Hogwart’s halls or on the grounds. Considering her OWL results and good behaviour, along with her time needed for mourning, Professors usually brushed off Zen’s actual bad actions. But she knew with the upcoming Seventh year her privileges would be buried ten feet under. Sending that Owl to Daniel had been one of the bravest things the Novell has done within her life, aside from confronting Bianca once (a choice she'd never make again) and using No-Maj tactics to dye and bleach her hair, instead of relying on magic. It felt nice to tap into her non-magical side here and there.
It was risky for the two of them, considering Zenevieva's punishment would be...rather merciful, while Daniel...Could face anything. Though, it was too late now, considering she pulled Daniel into the darkness of the statue, holding him close and hiding until the blur of Professors and Prefects passed. The thinness of her lips grew into a wide smile at his comment, a breath of laughter leaving her lips while her fingers reached up for the short cut bleached locks, pushing whichever long strand behind her ear. "I-I'm guessing that's a c-compliment..." She mumbled. "T-Thanks." She added. At his addition, Zen's eyes rolled considering Daniel was the only person who would comment on something like that. Though, he had a point, Zen was never found without a book, or a scroll...Paper...Anything readable.
"Is it too w-weird to say new year new m-me?" They were only just shy of a week into the new year and Zen had many plans to make 2025 her year. As cliche and odd as it sounded. "At least I t-took you up on the o-offer for a Midnight s-stroll..."

Zen suggested what he was saying about her being different as well as what he said about her hair was a compliment and Daniel nodded. “You would guess correctly, I like it. Not that the old color was bad in anyway but a change is nice sometimes.” Daniel explained in a hushed tone as they were still hiding in the shadows even if the prefect had already left. “So you just decided to go blonde for awhile or is this permanent?” He asked genuinely curious as to why she had changed her hair color. Either way it did look nice on the book worm.
Daniel shrugged slightly as Zen in a way explained the change by claiming it was a new year so a new her, asking if it was weird to say. “It’s not that weird, I do hope not too new. I'd miss the old book worm Zen if you’re too different.” Daniel teased with a laugh, Zen explained that at least she kept her promise about coming out after midnight with him. “That’s true, well this is you’re night after all so what does this new Zen have planned?” He was curious and if she didn’t have anything yet he could always make a few suggestions himself.

the middle of an anxious sea. THE SMILE THAT FORMED ON Zenevieva lips was a rare sight to see. It was generally rare to see the Novell smile amongst anyone she wasn’t comfortable with or didn’t particularly like, but Daniel had a knack for making Zen laugh and smile like everything was fine. Even if it wasn’t. She nodded in agreement however, changes weren’t necessarily a bad thing, but in the blonde’s case, it was a good change. She had brunette hair for almost 17 years, (or for 14, according to her parents she had fair blonde hair as a child and had uncanny looks to her aunt Adele) — and blonde wasn’t a bad look to start with. ”T-Thank you.” She smiled at his explanation. At his next question, her lips twisted upward in thought.
Surely her hair would grow as the months would pass and her natural dark roots to show. Magic would provide help with it, but Zen enjoyed the No-Maj’s process of doing so. So for now, it was a permanent choice. ”P-Permanent. But I p-prefer how the No-M-Ma-Maj’s do it.” It was time consuming the longer hair you had, but still fairly enjoyable for someone who barely done things in their day-to-day life. At least at home with Aunt Adele, homework was done early and books were read. Smiling at his next comment, Zenevieva knew she hadn’t changed that much, especially in the grasp of her left hand was the new book she had taken the time to start reading. Slowly she lifted it up, giving it a little shake as she let out a quiet laugh. Somethings really do never change.
Her main purpose for their nightly adventure was to capture the most flying seahorses, the same game he had mentioned on their date together. ”T-The seahorses.” Though there was the possibility that the seahorses had scattered off, sleeping the night away like most of the other magical creatures and items in Hogwarts did. ”D-Do they make a lot of…n-noise?” It was bad enough the two were out past curfew, but being caught playing with seahorses seemed to prove for a higher punishment, at least in the long run.

Zen explained that the hair color change was permanent and not some temporary spell but actually done how No-maj’s actually changed the color of their hair. He was sure there was some permanent spell that would change color too but the No-maj way worked just as well as magic would in this case. Possibly better but he wasn’t sure, Daniel had never bothered to mess with his hair much and especially not change the color of it. “I'll be on the look out for a blonde head than a brunette head from now on.” Daniel explained as he did think she looked nice but he would just have to get used to try to spot a blonde zen rather than the brunette one he was used too.
After asking what Zen’s plan for tonight was Daniel just smiled for a moment. She then asked if they made a lot of noise, something Daniel wasn’t really sure of. He had watched a few people pulling them out of the air with their wands and catching them though. “From what I remember they are pretty quiet besides a couple of noises. If they are out at night I doubt anyone would notice us. Professors don’t really tour around the lake much.” Daniel explained still in a hushed tone as he didn’t need someone to hear them. “They normally keep to the school.” He added. Looking out from the shadows they were hiding in it looked clear of anyone who might get them in trouble. “You ready to go or do you want to catch up on your reading a little bit more?” Daniel joked for a moment.

the middle of an anxious sea. ZENEVIEVA KNEW THAT MAGIC HAD it’s twists and turns, and even something as simple as colouring her hair could’ve been achieved without the mess that No-Majs went through. But Zen wanted it to be traditional, as cliche as it sounded. At his first comment, Zen’s lips twitched upwards into a smile, her index finger and thumb softening the end strands of her blonde locks as she stood. Though, the plan for the two of them tonight was to be competitive, have fun the same way Zen felt she had fun during their date. Nodding, the Novell felt rather relieved at that. One peep of a sound from the seahorses and the two of them were ultimately both dead. Detention because they were catching seahorses.
”T-Thank God.” She murmured, nodding in understanding. At his joke, the blonde rolled her eyes, lightly patting his arm, as a sign for the two of them to go. Considering they were out on the courtyard it made things slightly easier to sneak out towards the main grounds, which would then allow them to walk further towards the lake. Their steps were quiet, and Zen even took up the courage to press on a couple more steps, reach her head to view over the corner before signalling back for Daniel. Within no time, the two were crunching their feet against the grass, the Lake just a short trail ahead. ”H-How was your Ch-Christmas?”

The now blonde Zen was thankful to hear that the flying seahorses should be quiet. Daniel wasn’t totally sure as he had never caught them before but had watched and didn’t remember them making any loud noises. Zen padded his arm for a moment than started heading toward the main grounds of the school. “Lead the way mysterious blonde stranger.” Daniel quietly joked as he began to follow Zen. She even signaled him a couple times that the coast was clear to followed her. It was surprising to say the least as he didn’t expect the Zen he knew to be this courageous but it was fun to see. It didn’t take them long to be walking on the grass of the school ground headed for the lake.
As they walked Zen asked him how his Christmas had been. Daniel debating telling her the truth of how he had been living for some time now. It wasn’t the biggest secret in the world but he also didn’t really want it getting out. Not that he expected Zen would tell anyone it was just safer than having people know he had ran away from home for the better part of a year. “About the same as my other Christmas’s. Boring." Which wasn’t a lie, Daniel always spend his Christmas’s alone and bored as his father didn’t want to be around. “How was yours? Besides becoming a blonde.”

the middle of an anxious sea. MYSTERIOUS BLONDE STRANGER ONLY MADE Zenevieva sound cooler than she truly ever would be, and because of it the Novell's lips curved upwards. It was reckless what they were doing, but Zen enjoyed her time with Daniel and was honestly willing to risk detention just to catch a few seahorses. The grass and whiplash of fresh air was enough for the Ravenclaw to somewhat relax, but the hairs on her arms wouldn't budge, they rose in tension, fearing the moment the two of them would be caught together. She made the attempt to smile once he mentioned his Christmas break, matching all of the others as a boring event.
Zen’s on the other hand had been eventful. Alongside turning blonde shorty after Christmas, she spent the holiday alongside her aunt and even a few other friends considering it was the first year without her parents. Her friends consisted of Steve and Nora Kolstad, half-vampires like herself but still had the vampire parent in her life. ”G-Good.” She nodded, smiling at the memory. ”Ma-Makes me full t-thinking of all the food I-I ate…”

Walking down the path toward the lake was nice, it might have been dark but it wasn’t to the point where they couldn’t see where they were going as Zen led the way. It was still hard to believe that she was the one to call him out for a midnight adventure without him having to remind her. As they walked Zen explained that her Christmas break had been good. Which was nice to hear both because he was glad a friend could have a good break and at least someone had one. She explained that she felt full just thinking of all the food she ate and Daniel just laughed. “I think I had Chinese food, it was the only place that was open on Christmas.” Daniel explained still laughing as he had spent Christmas alone. No one was going to cook for him even if he was home. I doubted his father even had gotten a new house elf for his home in Europe as he was home so little.
It wasn’t long till they got to the lake and Daniel just stood near the edge with a small smirk. “So are you ready to lose?” Daniel teased as they could see a number of flying seahorses just skirting atop the lake.

the middle of an anxious sea. EVEN THOUGH IT WAS DARK, the atmosphere around them was somewhat calming. It would’ve been a lot better if Zenevieva wasn’t completely on edge. After all, she planned this, why was she so nervous? ”C-Chinese food…On Ch-Christmas?” She smiled, hoping he was joking. ”We co-could’ve met u-up on Christmas!” She added on, if she was able to spend the holiday with the Kolstads, surely Daniel would’ve been a fine addition. ”W-Was it at le-least good?”
When they turned, arriving at the lake, Zen looked over the edge before looking up at Daniel. The moon was out in its glory and he was standing somewhat in front of it, but Zen’s eyes only widened, taking up amusement from his tone. ”Re-Ready to w-win.” She corrected. ”B-But what do we ha-have to even do?”

Zen asked him about having Chinese food on Christmas and he just laughed slightly. As she then said they could have met up on Christmas, which might have been nice to spend it with someone he actually liked to be around but he didn’t need to crash anyone else’s Christmas just because his hadn’t been having the typical one. “What? Be in the same house with all those Christmas decorations around? What about all the mistletoe I imagine was hanging around?” Daniel joked with the now blonde Zen. He didn’t really want to be on the topic of how he was alone for Christmas or alone in general. “It wasn’t half bad and no one else was there. Not surprisingly.” Daniel explained as he figured no one but him would be out alone on Christmas. Still he did see a few people. More people alone than he had expected.
After Daniel spoke Zen corrected him, saying she was ready to win. “We’ll see about that.” He mused for a second as she then asked what they were supposed to do. “Well they fly over the water and hop in and out. You just have to use the pulling charm at the right time to catch them and pull them in. Then just let them go after you caught it.” Daniel explained as he watched it enough times to know how it was done. “Watch, I won’t count this one. He pulled out his wand and aimed for a moment for one slowly moving. “Carpe Retractum” with that dim light shot from his wand and headed for the seahorse and luckily hit it. With a flick he pulled the Seahorse in and grabbed it lightly, it didn’t really struggle but was just wiggling and felt cold to him. With that Daniel let it go as it went back to the lake. “Easy.” With that he looked over to Zen.

the middle of an anxious sea. WHEN DANIEL INITIALLY REVEALED HE was alone on Christmas Eve and Day, eating nothing but the No-Maj delights of Chinese food, all Zenevieva could feel was guilt. During the Christmas period, all she felt was an array of uncertainty and envy. Envy against her friends Steve and Nora that they had a Mother and love within to keep them happy during the Winter Break. Sure Aunt Adéle loved Zen, but ever since her parents died, emotions were a funny fucking thing. Red cheeks made their presence again once Daniel spoke up and with a quiet huff, Zen tried to force her lips up into a smile. ”Th-There’s nothing wrong with mis-misletoe.” At least she didn’t think so anyway. It was a part of Christmas traditions! For those couples anyway. ”Th-That sounds…sad…” She frowned, feeling more guilty. ”W-We spent it with th-the K-Kolstads…” Aka a lively bunch of vampires and half-vampires.
With Daniel explaining the aim of their competitive game, the blonde nodded along at his words. She felt ready, but her original energy for ’ready-to-win’ attitude had dimmed. She had never played this sort of ‘game’ before. At the draw of his wand, Zen stood back, rocking on her heels, watching as he cast the charm. He was successful, as he should have been and Zen smiled then. ”S-Sure. Easy.” She repeated after him, even though she knew well enough she wasn’t ready for anything like this. The half-vampire brushed at her robes, drawing her wand from her left pocket and aimed in the direction where the seahorse were. ”Pr-Practice as well.” She said, briefly looking up at Daniel before she casted the charm…And missed by a narrow second.
