Mazie seemed to really want to come to the farm and jack nodded, “okay then mark your calendar Mazie Pond.” he teased. So long as both of their parents said it was okay, that was. But he was confident that his wouldn’t mind.
Mazie asked why he wouldn’t be asking Ana out and then went on to say how she had seen the way he was with her, the way he held her and the way he looked at her. Jack sighed and shook his head a little. “yeah. Ana’s great. But if I’m going to ask someone out I want to know I can devote my full attention to them and I just can’t do that right now.” he was starting to get a little frustrated. But Mazie didn’t know that he liked her. She didn’t know that he was wrestling with these feelings.

Jack teased her about marking her calendar and Mazie squealed in delight, squeezing his arm a little tighter. ”It’s going to be so much fun!” she whisper-shouted. Even if she was just helping him with work, she’d be with Jack. That would make visiting more than worth it and she knew her parents would let her. Lee would help convince them if needed. Jack was making less than no sense. Mazie frowned as he explained that Ana was great. It clicked in her mind that Ana must be the brunette beauty, which made Mazie feel worse about her jealousy. She actually liked Ana ... but she liked Jack more. ”Why can’t you devote your full attention to her? Are you okay?” The worry rose inside her almost immediately and Mazie didn’t even try and hide it this time. Jack would tell her if something was wrong with him, wouldn’t he? Mazie always thought so, but now she wasn’t so sure. Her mind raced, trying to figure this out. ”Do you like someone else or something?” It felt like a long shot, considering how he’d interacted with Ana at the dance, but Mazie couldn’t help but ask. She wanted to know what was going on with her best friend. JOHN ELLIOT CLARK

Mazie kept asking questions even as they entered the village and saw the tea shop decorated for the party. She asked why he couldn’t give her his full attention and then asked if it was because he liked someone else. Damn. She knew him too well. “yeah. I like someone else.” he confirmed, hoping she would drop the subject now. Though he had a feeling it wouldn’t be that easy.

Jack was so quiet, his expression so serious that Mazie couldn’t help but wonder if she’d crossed some sort of line. But ... they’d talked about things like this before. Jack always told her when he was going to ask some girl out. At least, he always used to. Mazie couldn’t pay attention to anything else around them once he answered her question. Yeah, he liked someone else. By the tone in his voice, Mazie could tell he didn’t want to talk about it anymore. She looked straight ahead, not seeing what was in front of her anymore. Her cheeks were pale, her eyes wet with tears, but she wasn’t crying. She was blinking away the moisture, hoping Jack was too uncomfortable to look at her right now. ”You ... you don’t want to talk about it?” she asked in a softer voice than normal, though she was going for normal. She had a feeling that her and Jack’s friendship was changing forever. They’d finally got to the point everyone told her they’d reach, the point where they didn’t tell one another everything anymore. She didn’t want to be here at the party anymore, though she didn’t want Jack to know how much she was hurting either. She was going to have to put on a show today. JOHN ELLIOT CLARK

Mazie asked if he didn’t want to talk about it and he sighed. At this point he didn’t really think it was possible to not talk about it. He had said to much by now. She knew something was up and him not saying anything would start to drive them apart. “Mazie it’s not that I don’t want to tell you or talk to you about it. I trust you and don’t want to keep secrets from you. He admitted. He let his hand go up and ran it through his blonde hair. “I’m just scared to say it, I guess. Saying it could really mess things up and I don’t want to do that…”

This conversation was far more serious than Mazie ever intended it to be, which was probably on her. Why did she feel the need to try and force Jack to confide in her? Why did she push and push for information? She knew it was going to hurt her, she should just leave well enough alone, but she couldn't. Not with Jack. He meant more to her than anyone. He sighed and guilt started eating at Mazie. She shouldn't have ever brought up Ana, this whole thing was a bad idea. He finally spoke, saying that he trusted her and that "it" wasn't that he didn't want to tell her. What was it then? She frowned as she tried to make sense of his words, watching as he tussled his own hair. She loved it when he did that, but now wasn't the time to be thinking on that. Jack was having a hard time because of her. She needed to make it right. He admitted that he was scared to say it, nervous that it would mess things up. "Jack," Mazie tried to find the right words, whatever words would make him feel better and take this guilt off of her. She couldn't handle it. "You don't have to tell me. I don't want to mess anything up with the girl you like and I mean, it's really none of my business. I know you trust me, and that when you're ready you'll tell me who she is, but I don't need to know." She forced a laugh, shrugging her shoulders at him, "Sorry I was being so pushy." She didn't ever want him to feel uncomfortable around her like she obviously just had. Hopefully this would make it better somehow. JOHN ELLIOT CLARK

Mazie started insisting that he didn’t need to tell her anything and that it was fine but jack has to wonder whether it really was fine. Mazie was such a good friend and she was trying so please him right now by not pushing any more and he knew that she was just trying to be nice. “no don’t apologize. You don’t need to walk on eggshells around me, I don’t want you to feel like you did anything wrong, you haven’t.” he assured her. He wanted to just tell her, but he couldn’t do that. It would ruin everything. She’d turn around and run away and he’d never see her again. It would be weird. He’d lose his best friend. “sorry I don’t mean to be so cryptic…” he added. “I just… don’t want anything to change”.

Mazie knew that she told him not to tell her, that she was backing off entirely from the previous topic of conversation between her and Jack, but a part of her thought he'd tell her anyway. That he'd realize how silly it was for him to keep something like this a secret for her, that he would know she'd do her best to try and help him keep his secret if it was that important to him. But, he didn't tell her. He started off telling her not to apologize, that she hadn't done anything wrong and Mazie offered a hesitant smile, nodding at her best friend shyly. "Okay. Thanks Jack," she mumbled softly, grateful that he wanted her to still be herself around him but not understanding at the same time. Suddenly it felt like there was a gaping hole between them, a secret he couldn't share and while Mazie knew it shouldn't bother her, it did. Like the fact that he still hadn't told her who showed him the secret passageway he introduced her to. She knew the mystery would eat her up on the inside, but she wouldn't bring it up again. Her smile grew a little when he apologized and said he didn't want things to change. That didn't quite make sense to her, but she wasn't going to point that out either. She rolled her eyes, "Jack, nothing's going to change," she hesitated a second, her eyebrows furrowing. That was a lie. Things always changed. "Okay maybe that's not true, but as long as we've got one another we'll always be good, yeah? We can always find a way to work through the changes together?" Unless he was keeping secrets, that was. Then again, Mazie was keeping her own secrets too, that being the fact that she cared for him, but there was no way Jack would want to know that. He liked some girl even more than he liked Ana (and Mazie saw the look on his face when he was with Ana). That meant he really cared for her and Mazie didn't want to mess with that. Forcing a sudden smile to force away her inner pain, she turned to Jack, "You know, we need to hurry up or we'll get to the party just about the time it ends. Then you won't even be able to keep your promise and dance with me," she teased, tugging his arm gently. JOHN ELLIOT CLARK

Mazie was being very serious about all of this and he didn’t really think it deserved the level of seriousness that the two of them were giving it, but she didn’t know what it was and he didn’t know what it meant to her, so he just nodded, wishing he had never bought any of it up. But it was too late now. He had said it, and he knew she wouldn’t forget it.
She tugged his arm and they hurried over to the tea shop where the party was being held. The place was nicely decorated and already full of students and guests, mingling and drinking and some dancing towards the back of the shop. It seemed to have been magically expanded to fit the number of people here. “so what do you think?” He asked as he looked around.

Jack was so quiet. Mazie wasn't sure if that was because he was annoyed at her or if he just wanted to stop talking about this. He didn't say anything, confirming that they'd work through changes together, just nodded. Mazie didn't find that very reassuring. All of a sudden it felt like she and Jack were headed in different directions. Or maybe he was headed forward and she was stuck in her tracks, watching him go on without her. It was a weird feeling, something she'd definitely try and figure out later, but if they were growing apart she was going to enjoy what she had now. Jack was bringing her to this party and she was going to enjoy her time with him as long as she could. She could overthink things later. They walked into the tea shop and Mazie's eyes widened as she glanced around. The place was ... well it looked good, but it definitely wasn't her kind of place. She remembered when she walked by here in January, glancing in the window and grimacing. It was a place for couples. Obviously they decorated it for the party, but Mazie still wasn't sure if she liked the place. She shrugged as she looked around, glancing up to Jack with a sort of nervous smirk. "I don't think I'll ever come in here again after today, probably," she answered with a chuckle. "At least it looks better than it did last month. What do you think?" People were obviously already starting to have their fun and Mazie was ready to jump into it with Jack. She wanted to spend as much time with him today as she could, since she had the sinking feeling everything was changing with them. JOHN ELLIOT CLARK

Mazie didn’t seem very impressed by the party and Jack couldn’t blame her, but they were here, and that was probably good enough. He liked that Mazie didn’t like these big, fancy parties either. It was something else they had in common. He couldn’t help but laugh at her comment about not wanting to come back here after the party. “I don’t blame you. I don’t think I will either.” he agreed. Jack wasn’t exactly the type to like a place like this. It was a little too frilly for his taste. He knew Mazie felt the same way. She was girly in some aspects, but he knew this was far too much for her. Though it did look a lot different now. She asked him what he thought and he shrugged. “I suppose we should dance or something?” he suggested. He didn’t want to force her to do anything, maybe she was thirsty.

Mazie lifted an eyebrow when Jack said he didn't think he would come back here either. "Oh really? You don't want to come back to this tea shop when they make it all lovey-dovey cutesy again?" she teased, unable to resist. She wanted to make things go back to the way they normally were between the pair, which meant a lot of teasing and flirting. She knew he was serious, that he likely wouldn't have ever come here if it weren't for the party, but she didn't care. She just wanted to make him smile. He asked if they should dance and Mazie's smile widened as she nodded instantly. She would never turn down the chance to dance with Jack Hatfield. "Yes! I love dancing, as you're very well aware." She lead the way over to where other people were already dancing, looking up at Jack with a smile. She just wanted things to be normal with them. That's all she wanted for today. JOHN ELLIOT CLARK

He laughed and shook his head at her teasing about not wanting to come back to the shop once the party was over and it was made all cutesy again. “I’m good.” he insisted with a little wink down to her. The three broomsticks was much more his taste. Mazie agreed to dancing and lead the way over to the dance floor where a few other couples were enjoying themselves. For a second, jack actually felt like he was one of them. A couple. He took Mazie in his arms and moved with her to the music. It was slower, classical. A band played in the corner, all wearing formal dress robes. He had to admit, the Fudges knew how to throw a party. “this whole thing is a little too rich for me.” he admitted. He felt out of place.

Mazie laughed when Jack said he was good. Of course he was. The two of them were very similar in taste and she wasn’t surprised at all that he didn’t really want to spend his time in the girly tea shop. She didn’t want to either. It was only okay right now because Jack asked her to come with him, and the place was decorated a little differently than normal. He started dancing with her right away and Mazie smiled, determined to enjoy the moment. If Jack really did like some girl more than Ana, she wanted to get her time with him while she could. She tilted her head to the side when he said the whole thing was too rich for him. She nodded a little, thinking that if she wasn’t here with him she might feel a bit uncomfortable too. ”Do you feel uncomfortable here? I can try and distract you if you want,” Mazie teased with a wink. JOHN ELLIOT CLARK

Maxie offered to distract him with a little wink of her own and he looked down at her. “how are you going to distract me.” he challenged. It wasn’t that he felt uncomfortable so much as just out of place. He was wearing the only suit that he had, and could count all the times he had worn it on one hand. He wasn’t this high society type of person and he didn’t really want to be. But he was here to support his friend, and he was here for an excuse to dance with Mazie.
