Something about the challenge in Jack’s eyes made a shiver run up Mazie’s spine. She loved it when he got this type of an attitude with her. Or when he got this type of attitude at all. Mazie quirked her head to the side as she looked up at him. ”You really think I’m going to just tell you?” She asked with a teasing smile. If she was braver, she’d kiss him, but Mazie couldn’t bring herself to do that. She didn’t want to ruin their friendship or make him feel like he couldn’t hang out with her anymore. That would definitely ruin her year. ”I’ll at least keep you on your toes waiting to see what I’m going to do.” Would that be enough to help him feel more comfortable? JOHN ELLIOT CLARK

Mazie teased him about her telling him what she would be doing to distract him. Apparently that wasn’t how she saw this working out. So he just scoffed and rolled his eyes. He wouldn’t be distracted wondering if she was going to distract him. “great help.” He teased back. He looked around as they danced, wondering what they should do next. “You thirsty or anything?” He asked her.

Okay, so the real problem here was that Mazie wasn't sure how she could distract Jack. Sure, she could tease him or come up with some sort of a game or something, but they were at a fancy party. Those sorts of things- the strategies she would normally use to distract him- simply weren't going to work right now. So that was the real reason she couldn't tell Jack how she was going to distract him. She rolled her eyes when he sarcastically told her that he was a big help. "You could come up with ways to distract me too," she suggested. She tried to get herself to focus, but the only idea that kept on popping into his head was to kiss him and she couldn't do that. Their dance ended and Jack asked if she was thirsty. Not really, but she nodded anyway. "Sure!" Mazie agreed. She glanced over to the refreshment table and grimaced. "You want to go get it? There are lots of people over there." Sure, Mazie didn't normally mind crowds, but she was wearing her favorite dress and didn't want someone to ruin it somehow. She smiled up at Jack sweetly. "Please?" she asked in a pleading tone. She didn't think he'd be able to say no to that, which was the point. JOHN ELLIOT CLARK

Mazie asked if he minded going to get her something to drink and he nodded his head, sure, he didn’t mind going to brave the crowd of students around the punch bowl. Or… fountains… man nothing was let out of this party. It was more impressive the more he looked around. “Sure. I’ll be right back.” he turned and went away, heading over to the refreshments across the room, turning his back on Mazie.

Mazie wasn't really surprised when Jack agreed to get her a drink. He'd never refused to help her before and it was his idea to get drinks anyway. "Thank you Jack, you're the best!" Mazie called after him once he said that he'd be right back. She smiled as she watched him walk across the room. Honestly, she was just happy to be here with him. She jumped a little when she heard someone cough beside her. Mazie turned around, smiling hesitantly when she heard a familiar voice. "Oh, hi Scott." He was a guy in her year, used to be in her house back in Ilvermorny, but now he was in some other house. She hadn't seen him since coming back. "Hey Mazie," he greeted, smiling at her and scooting a little closer. "I can't believe I haven't seen you at all this year. Don't you think you owe me a dance?" Scott asked with a wink. Mazie glanced over to see where Jack was, but Scott was already grabbing her hand, "Oh come on, let's have some fun," he encouraged as he pulled her closer than normal and started to dance with her. Mazie didn't want to hurt his feelings or anything, so she joined him. Jack would understand, she was sure. JOHN ELLIOT CLARK

Nothing exciting happened to Jack on the way to get drinks, and he was able to pretty easily get them and turn to head back to where he left Mazie, just by the dance floor, without much of a problem at all. The crowds weren’t pushy, everyone was being very polite. But when he got back, Mazie wasn’t there. It took him a second to spot her, but there she was. Dancing with another guy. Scott. Scott wasn’t someone jack disliked, but right now he was. Jack sat down at a table near the dance floor and decided not to watch. Mazie could come back and get her drink when she was done. It wasn’t like he had any claim over her anyway.

Mazie really wasn't interested in dancing with Scott. She wanted to be with Jack- he did bring her here after all- but Scott didn't really give her a choice. He danced, holding her closer than she felt comfortable with and flirting pretty strongly with her. Mazie smiled and played along, pulling a little away from him while they continued to dance. She didn't want to be super close with him. She wanted to be with Jack. As they danced, she spotted Jack sitting down at a table and her heart sunk. Once the dance was over, Mazie smiled at Scott and tried to be nice, but she refused another dance and headed over to Jack quickly, sitting beside him. "Hey Jack," she said, a little breathlessly. "Sorry about that. Scott, you know ... wouldn't take no for an answer." Why did she feel so nervous? It wasn't like Jack would be upset, or like he would even care that she danced with someone else. Sooner or later Mazie he joined him, running over and sitting next to him quickly while saying that she was sorry and that Scott wouldn’t have taken no for an answer. Jack nodded, staring down at his drink. Wine or something, he supposed. Because it tasted a little like alcohol. “I’m sure I could have convinced him.” Jack muttered under his breath, barely audibly. He was most certainly jealous. And that was annoying. He couldn’t act this way. She already was worried something was wrong.

Jack wasn't looking at her. Mazie wondered if he was upset that she danced with Scott, but that didn't make any sense. He was interested in some other girl. Or was he upset that he brought her here and she went off dancing with someone else? She apologized. She didn't even want to go with Scott. Mazie frowned as she reached for the other glass that Jack had on the table, taking a quick sip of it. He said something under his breath, but Mazie didn't catch it. "What did you say?" she said, leaning closer to him, a little nervous by the frown on his face. She reached over to touch his arm. "Hey, you okay?" Mazie asked. She felt bad, though she didn't really know why. JOHN ELLIOT CLARK

Mazie asked what he had said and Jack shook his head. “nothing. Here’s your drink.” he handed it over to her. His was just about finished by now, definitely alcoholic, whatever it was. But fruity too. “yeah I’m fine. How was Scott?” He asked, hating the way the name felt in his mouth.

Mazie frowned when Jack wouldn't tell her what he said. He wasn't looking at her still, even as he handed her the drink. "Thanks Jack," she said in a cheerful voice, trying to pull him out of whatever funk he was in. Could he seriously be this upset about her dancing with Scott, or did he see something else when he went to get their drinks. Maybe something happened with that girl he liked. Mazie wanted to ask questions, but he was already being closed off enough. She took a drink, too focused on whatever was going on with Jack to really pay attention to the flavor or anything. He said he was fine, but Mazie didn't believe him. Then he asked about Scott and she rolled her eyes. "Scott was Scott. Always pushy and flirty, taking it almost too far." Of course, he hadn't really done anything, but he insinuated things while they talked and definitely held her closer than she wanted. "I much prefer being with you," Mazie added honestly. She took another sip of her drink, starting to glance around the room a little. Jack was angry, or something was wrong at least, and she felt bad about that. She wanted to fix it, but she didn't know how. JOHN ELLIOT CLARK

Mazie explained that Scott was like he always was and that he was flirty and pushy and tried to take things too far and Jack felt a little mad about it now. He shouldn’t have just pushed him away from her right away. He hadn’t. “yeah. Well that’s what I’m here for. I’m the best friend.” he said when Mazie told him that she would rather be with him. He was comfortable. He was always there. And he liked being the dependable guy. He always likes being that guy. But now look where being that guy was getting him.

Mazie didn't understand what was going on with Jack. He was being all broody, not at all acting like her best friend. He didn't say anything to her comments about Scott, just saying he was here because she preferred him, making it sound like being the best friend was a bad thing. She wanted to demand that he tell her what was going on, but today was weird enough. She didn't know if he would tell her if she asked, and she was scared that her trying to make him would widen the space that seemed to be coming between them. She forced a smile, trying to figure out what she could say to help him. "You're not the best friend, Jack. You're my best friend." Mazie was going for a reassuring attitude, but she wasn't sure that sitting here with him was helping anything so, after another swallow of her drink, she jumped to her feet. "Okay, we've been sitting here way too long. Are you going to dance with me some more or aren't you?" she asked with a challenging grin, hoping he'd join her instead of deciding to sulk there. Mazie said that he wasn’t just the best friend but he was her best friend. He nodded but didn’t say anything but then he stood up quickly when she asked if he wanted to dance again. He did. He was acting weird and even he was realizing it. But he couldn’t really stop doing it. Maybe dancing would help shake the feeling off of him. “yeah. Let’s go.” he offered her his hand and then lead her to the dance floor. It was a slow song, not as classical as the last one, most couples were holding one another closely and Jack wasn’t going to miss the opportunity to hold Mazie. He wasn’t sure how many more he’d get.

Nothing seemed to be working with him and Mazie was starting to actually get a little discouraged. Sure, their date started off weird with her pushing for too much information during their walk, but she thought they'd be able to move past it during the party. They weren't. Jack seemed to be retreating deeper and deeper into himself and Mazie didn't know how to stop it. She wanted to have a good time with him, wanted to laugh and flirt and have fun but Jack definitely wasn't in the mood for that. He jumped up when she asked if he wanted to dance, leading her to the dance floor, which was kind of a relief. At least he wasn't so upset he didn't want to be with her anymore. Mazie lifted both of her arms and wrapped them around his neck, figuring that it was appropriate for this dance and maybe she'd be able to get him to look at her this way. He still didn't look happy. "Jack," she muttered, not knowing what to say but still feeling concerned. She pulled herself a little closer to him, not realizing what she was doing, just trying to get a better look. Mazie tried to catch his eye, wanting to look into his as she tried to figure him out. She didn't want to ask him if he was okay again, but was he? She hesitated, "Did I do something? Are you mad at me?" The words spilled out, but she meant them. She was worried. JOHN ELLIOT CLARK
