Brody Dubois had never been so nervous in his life as when he had asked Yvonne to go to the Valentine's Day masquerade ball with him, or as shocked when she had agreed to go with him. Valentine's Day has never really struck Brody as something that Yvonne was too interested in, but he would try to make it special for her. He also hoped that Valentine's Day would be the perfect excuse for him to admit to her that he liked her as more than just a friend, although maybe asking her to a school dance had clued her in on that detail already.
Regardless, he waited outside of the Slytherin Common Room with just enough time before the party would start, knowing that it would be difficult to find Yvonne otherwise. Their enchanted masks made it so that they couldn't tell people apart from one another as easily, although Brody hoped that his mask—dark brown and resembling an owl's face—would have been obvious enough. Otherwise, he doubted that many of the other boys would be in anything other than the same sort of average black dress robes that he was wearing.
He had always thought that Yvonne looked pretty, but she looked especially so as he escorted her upstairs to the Great Hall, which, bathed in pink light and decorated extensively for the occasion, looked very different from the way that it had appeared during dinner just a few hours earlier. There were so many people around, but it was impossible to tell who anyone was behind their masks. The music had started playing, too, and people seemed to be making their way to the dancefloor.
"Do you want to dance?" Brody asked, motioning in the direction in which the couples, at least, seemed to be heading. "Or just watch what other people are doing?" He would leave it up to Yvonne to decide.

DRESSES, DANCES AND ANYTHING FORMAL were simply things on Yvonne De Snaijer’s one out of many lists that spelled out the words ‘I hate it’. She hated the feeling of anything heavy or dragging her down — in this case a ball-gown, or anything dotted around her face like makeup. Yvette had suggested that night that they would both have their makeup done by their elder sibling in a place they could all meet in before dressing up for the ball and like an idiot she agreed. In all fairness, Yvonne was an idiot by ultimately agreeing to Brody’s request to going to the ball with him. Since their last outbreak after Yvonne’s leg had been burned, the revelation of her cruel antics being completely true, the De Snaijer was sure he would have never wanted to see her again, but in all fairness it was the complete opposite. Yvonne hated the fact that Brody wanted to arrive to the ball the moment it was set to start, considering Yvonne loved to be fashionably late for almost anything.
Stepping out of the Slytherin Common Room, she forced a smile as she was met with her date for the night, black dress robes matched with a dark brown Owl mask. That was Brody all right. Yvonne had went with a more…daring look. A blue-purple shifting coloured dress that had a knot somewhere in the middle. The leg area was her favourite as it split for the left leg, revealing the side of her burn that she had developed over the Christmas break. It was currently her favourite thing about herself. Her mask was interesting too. Concealing her identity with the same colours as her dress. Not too over-the-top at all. Being escorted to the Great Hall by Brody’s side, Yvonne was mildly interested at the decor and how far-out the Lockhart went for the Ball. It was interesting to see how much effort he put into things that weren’t his scores. Everyone wore masks — as expected — and Yvonne could truly not tell who was who. Except from Brody and her sisters. Though there was that one guy who wore a white tux. What was this? A wedding?
Being spoken to, Yvonne looked up at her taller friend and sent him a shrug. ”Dance.” Because why not? ”That’s what we’re here to do isn’t it?” She pulled at his arm, taking him closer to where the couples had moved closer to one another and the music shifted to a waltz. Classic Hogwarts. It seemed to be a traditional dance that all the students except…Yvonne knew. And she felt stupid for standing out.

Yvonne gave him a shrug at his question, and Brody had almost forgotten what he had asked her to begin with. Merlin, Yvonne looked really pretty in her dress and mask. The shimmery purple color of her dress and mask made him feel kind of dorky for having gone with something so plain.
And then it was as if a lightbulb had flickered on above his head. "Dance," Yvonne answered. "That’s what we’re here to do, isn’t it?"
She tugged at his arm before he could guide her out onto the floor, though—in fairness—this was the most formal occasion he could really recall having attended, and he especially hadn't gone to anything like this before with a girl… with Yvonne. People at the ball were actually dancing, too, and dancing better than Brody expected they would. Most of the events that he had been to at Ilvermorny that were kind of the same idea had been more of the "guys on one side of the room and girls on the other" type.
He wasn't sure if he knew how to slow dance, and maybe he should have asked his older brother for a few pointers first. Either way, it had always been Brody's philosophy that there was no time like the present to learn, so he supposed that he would have to put that into practice. He watched Yvonne for a moment and then the other couples for some guidance.
Alright, he thought, he would just have to take her waist like that… and then hold her hand like that… and then hopefully not step on her feet.
"Here," Brody instructed her at a whisper. "You just have to, uh, put your… left arm on top of my right, and then we hold hands on the opposite side…" They could do this.

WITH ALL THE THINGS YVONNE hated, with dances and dresses being a part of that list, she simply didn’t want to add Brody there. He had been persistent and…consistent until the present. Even so, after her revelation after Christmas, things strangely remained the same between them. The feigned confidence she had — pulling him to the dance floor — disappeared the moment they settled, not exactly blending in with the couples amongst them as they hadn’t begun dancing yet. Pulling a scowled frown, Yvonne raised her left arm to settle on top of his right, just as he guided, while her right hand rose for his left. Dancing was stupid.
”Then you lead?” She questioned, still unsure. Pale eyes looked at the couples amongst her for some guidance and advice, but with the way they moved, the De Snaijer remained puzzled. So she made the first move. She pulled at Brody, hoping he would lean into her and eventually start dancing. They just had to go with the flow in the end.

Yvonne got herself into the same position as he had instructed her to take, although Brody could sense that she didn't seem too thrilled by it. Either that, or she was just frustrated with it, which seemed the more likely explanation with her question to him. "Then you lead?" she asked.
Brody nodded. "Yeah," he confirmed, "then I'll lead you." He knew that he would have to do that much, though it was Yvonne who ultimately moved first, guiding him. He wasn't bothered by it—and sort of expected it. Looking down at their feet and then over to the people who seemed to have a better idea of what they were doing, he began to move in the same square-like formation and did his best to guide Yvonne.
Once he had gotten his feet to do what they were supposed to be doing in order to waltz, he looked back up at Yvonne and smiled. Merlin, she looked pretty. "You good, Vonni?"

DANCING WAS BY NO MEANS Yvonne’s excellent skill. At all. It was close to say the De Snaijer had what the No Maj’s referred to as ‘two left feet’. In fairness, it was true, but the young brunette was surprised she hadn’t treaded on Brody’s poor feet yet. His nods and her push of guidance were enough to start the dancing between them and Yvonne soon felt herself falling into a similar pattern as Brody, doing a square like step-by-step movement. She felt her lips twitch into the smallest of smiles, even if the two were barely moving at all, she was actually dancing! Eventually enough, they were confident with their waltz and she felt eyes burning down at her while she looked down at their feet.
Slowly, she lifted her head, locking eyes with Brody and even making an attempt to smile up at him. She had many things to apologise for, at least to him, but she didn’t want to admit it. Not yet. She wanted Ilvermorny to hopefully reopen within the years, have Brody leave her side and that’s when she’d apologise. For being a shitty friend and a shitty person. But for now…Maybe living a double life was enough. ”I’m…Good.” She responded. Why did he always question her? ”Are you…Good?” Awkward.

Miraculously, neither one of them had managed to step on the other one's toes as they began to dance, which Brody took as a good sign. He wasn't a trained dancer, by any means; he really didn't have much experience with that kind of thing at all. Owls were his forte, followed by the care of various other magical creatures and… schoolwork. Those were his strengths, he thought—not dancing or girls or Valentine's Day. Yet, shockingly, he didn't seem to be doing too terribly for himself.
"I'm…" The thought seemed to linger in Yvonne's mind for a second more. "Good," she told him. "Are you… Good?"
Brody nodded, fighting the urge to glance down at his feet again just to make sure that he was still doing it right. "Y-Yeah," he answered her, trying to sound as confident as he could. He felt sort of bad that he couldn't do anything fancier in terms of footwork, but they were doing okay. "Yeah, I am."
He continued through their square-like sequence of steps again. The compliment that he had for her was still there in his mind. He hadn't forgotten it; he was just waiting for the right timing. Swallowing, he added, "Um… You look… really pretty."

YVONNE KNEW SHE SHOULD HAVE responded nicely, perhaps even with a small smile, that would’ve worked! But instead, Yvonne’s brows were furrowed, her eyes focusing solely on her feet — avoiding stepping on Brody’s every time they got fairly close. There were only brief moments she would lift her head to smile up at him, especially as the dance continued on, picking up. Though it was literally a few more minutes or so before Yvonne had finally…realised Brody complimented her. The recollection only lead to the De Snaijers face flushing red, eyes crossing the room over his shoulder (which she could barely see above if it weren’t for these heels), to avoid his glare.
”T-Thank you…” She muttered, drawing her lip in to aggressively chew. She wasn’t the talkative type when it came to flirting, complimenting or even making others — aside from Yvette, she had years of experience — any better. ”You look…Good. Great— I mean.” Merlin, she was terrible at this. But she liked his mask the best out of his entire formal wear. It matched him perfectly and was somewhat rather cute.

It seemed to take a moment before Yvonne realized that she had been complimented, though Brody could understand if she was more focused on her footwork than on conversing. ”T-Thank you," she told him eventually. Brody could see that she was blushing. While he hadn't meant to make her uncomfortable, he thought that it was sort of… cute?
"You look… Good. Great— I mean," she told him in reply. Brody looked back down at his feet, both to make sure that he was still doing the dancing thing correctly and also because he hadn't expected her to compliment him. It felt good. Great, even.
"You're welcome," Brody smiled, looking back up at her and scrunching his nose to try to readjust his mask without ruining their dancing. "And, uh, thanks. You've… really got the hang of this waltzing stuff, too, you know?"

LIKE MANY, YVONNE HATED NOT knowing things. And dancing just happened to be a part of the unknown list. Talking wasn’t her strong suit when she tried to focus on things, and while she hoped Brody remembered that, he seemed to be focused on something else. Something Yvonne couldn’t even put her finger on. His smile was enough to get a smile out of the De Snaijer herself, and she moved her arms, so the hand that was held with Brody’s fit more appropriately.
She even laughed briefly, once he commented on her fast learning. Sure, she wasn’t the best or the most knowledgable dancer, but knowing how to waltz was enough for the night. At least she hoped so anyway. ”You think so?” She asked him, corners of her lips rising. It was a rare smile out of the De Snaijer, being the type to usually frown and mentally curse everyone but…She was enjoying herself. Not that she would admit it. Yet anyway.

"You think so?"
Yvonne seemed happy to hear his compliment about her dancing, and Brody caught what he thought might have been a smile upon her face in response to it, too. From his perspective, he thought, why wouldn't he compliment her? Did Yvonne not realize just how amazing she was? It hadn't been a trick of the light or a trick of the enchanted masks; Yvonne was really smiling at him. It had been a while since he'd seen her smile, and it made him feel good that he had been the reason for it.
Brody smiled back at her, having been put more at ease by Yvonne's having let her guard down. "Yeah," he nodded. He had fallen into the rhythm of the waltz, too, and he hoped that the song would last a little while longer so that he could enjoy the moment. This was the Yvonne he remembered from Ilvermorny. "You're really good, Vonni."

YVONNE HADN’T EXPECTED A SIMPLE event like this was easy enough for the brunette to let her guard down and have fun. Brody was the type of person to prod at the Slytherin until she felt better and usually, Yvonne hated him for it. Mostly because, Brody never gave up with most things.
Though, his compliments were enough to keep her going, even with her terrible dancing skills. They found a rhythm though, swaying back and forth and even stepping correctly. She gripped at his hands a little tighter though, nervous at where she would step to next, but she kept her smile up regardless. ”Thank you for…inviting me to this.” She smiled up at him, unclasping her hand from his so she could press at his enchanted mask.

"Thank you for… inviting me to this," Yvonne told him, the kind of smile upon her face that he hadn't seen from her in a while. She reached up to press at the owl mask that magically obscured his face from being truly recognizable as his own, and he smiled back at her.
"I, uh, was kind of worried," Brody admitted, "that you wouldn't want to go with me." He wasn't about to mention that he almost hadn't gone through with asking her, just because he had felt that the likelihood of Yvonne's agreeing to go with him was so slim. It wasn't just the "going with him" aspect of it that worried him, either; it was more the thought that Yvonne wouldn't have been interested in attending at all. Yet he had taken that risk and was dancing with her. Maybe their steps weren't perfect, but Brody didn't want to jinx himself. It still felt (sort of, maybe, really?) perfect to him. "But I'm glad you said yes."
