SAT APRIL 19TH, FLOWER FESTIVAL THE SWEET APRIL AIR WAS PERFUMED BY AN array of flowers, and it made Eli's nose itch in the most pleasant of ways. He slid through the portkey from Hogsmeade, his camera gripped tight under his light jacket, and emerged in a springtime wonderland. Eli couldn't believe his eyes as he gazed from the top of a slight, grassy hill. The portkey under him shaped like a tiny little ladybug. And just below him, a greenhouse was sprawled across a luscious field of wild grass and swaying stalks of wheat.
People milled around him, some popping up from portkeys and others sliding in to the greenhouse with a measured ease. He could smell cotton candy as he walked down the hill. And... was that popcorn? It was like a carnival back home. Though his heart did make a bit of a jump as he remembered the last event he had attended. Eli had always loved dragons, and he still did. But his shoulder gave a phantom ache as he thought about the first time he'd ever encountered one.
"Cordie!" Eli barked suddenly, waving his arm as he caught sight of a halo of buttery blonde hair. Her camera like a marker for him to spy her with. He practically galloped towards her, his cheeks creased as he beamed happily under the bright sun. It shot his dark hair through with bronze. "Have you been waiting a while?" He asked her, rubbing his cheek nervously as he played with his camera strap with his other hand. Eli had a way of putting his foot in his mouth around Cordie. But, he'd still jumped at the chance to take some photo's of the festival when she'd mentioned it offhand at the art club. He'd practically invited himself along.
"I thought maybe we'd check out the petting zoo first." He rambled, fiddling with the settings on his camera before he lifted it up and snapped a practise photo of Cordelia, the glass of the greenhouse reflecting the sun and setting her blonde hair on fire. The strands sparkling like gold. "If you want?" He asked after a second, forcing himself to shut up as he looked at her expectantly. Patiently.

04.19.2025 Cordelia had heard of the flower festival months earlier while browsing through a magical photography magazine. There weren’t many of the sort, but this one she found to be fairly reputable over the years and focused a lot on topics she could use to perfect her craft. Outside of the magical publications, the muggle ones tended to fair better since her equipment was in that realm as opposed to magic film and cameras. Regardless, the magazine had given her plenty of ideas for shoots over the years, and finally she found an event that she was going to be able to attend in person because Hogwarts was allowing students to attend it. To say that she was elated to go would be an understatement. Escaping the confines of the castle walls during the best season of the year was like having a second Christmas. An even better Christmas since hers this past year had been marred by her parents’ bitter divorce and the absence of her dad for the first time in her life. Needless to say, the time spent on her own during the festival was going to be fun for her. An endless stream of photographs were going to be taken throughout the day, and she had been stockpiling rolls of film since the start of the year. And up until a few weeks earlier, she was going to be attending it on her own.
The new plan was for Eli to meet her at the venue. Cordelia had been hesitant at first, but she also still felt a little bad for her housemate after their encounter at the start of the fall term. Over break she had managed to even out the rest of her hair (thanks to her mum’s steadier hands) and everything was basically back to normal, minus the awkwardness she felt radiating from her every time she talked to Eli. In the end, it had been her fault for trying to push by him when leaving the darkroom, so she couldn’t really blame him for getting her hair caught on the badge. Turning down his self-invitation to join her at the festival was basically impossible for her to do because of that, and a little part of her hoped that it would restore some of the normalcy she had been inching towards with him prior to the fateful bad hair day.
To make everything easier, Lily had been barred from going to the event by the school due to her grades, so that was one less thing Cordelia had to worry about. She enjoyed the Gryffindor girl’s presence immensely, but giving her room to roam was like watching the timer on a bomb tick down and passively waiting for imminent doom. Every Hogsmeade weekend went the same way: with Lily saying she would hang out all day and then disappearing after an hour or two, only to show up near the end of the day on a sugar-high, blabbering about some adventure she found herself on. How she managed to find something new to do in Hogsmeade every month was beyond Cordelia’s knowledge. Lily worked best in small doses, and not having her around to sniff every single flower and pet all the animals was almost a blessing in disguise. Peaceful photography with only Eli hovering around was better than having to reel in the bouncy, bubbly Potter girl.
Arriving at the school’s portkey bright and early, Cordelia was positive she had prepared herself for the onslaught of pictures she was about to take. Her normal film camera was slung from her neck, loaded with a new roll of film, and her digital camera was stored safely in her backpack. She wasn’t sure what sort of protective charms the event organizers would be tossing up around the area, so she figured it would be safe to bring it along should it work. Normally it was saved for her summer expeditions around London and her hometown, but every opportunity to work digitally was an opportunity missed if she didn’t take it.
Popping through the portkey with the first wave of students, she immediately headed for the greenhouse area in an attempt to snap a few pictures there before it became too crowded. While the majority of her work today was going to focus on the plants and animals, she figured that getting before and after shots of the event could look interesting. Serenity without human interference and then the festival in full swing. During the last few events she had attended, capturing photos of the crowd turned out to be some of her better work. There was something intriguing about snapping people in the full swing of enjoying themselves without knowing she was there that really pulled at her deep down. The ability to be a passive viewer that could retain a moment for eternity was a natural sort of magic that not even the spells she could cast had the capability of replicating. The muggles certainly got that one right.
After getting a few of her test photos out of the way, Cordelia started to get herself ready for the next order at hand: finding Eli in the new throngs of students that had arrived since she got there. It didn’t take too long because he seemed to have spotted her from a distance, yelling out at her and waving his hand back and forth a bit longer than she would have liked. Even though nobody else was paying attention to it, being called out like that in a crowd was far from comfortable for her. “N-Not really…” she mumbled as Eli approached her through the crowd. “I w-w-wanted to ge-get here b-before it gets busy so yeah…” she trailed off as he raised his camera to her and snapped a picture of her. She couldn’t help but scrunch her face at him as he did so – a reaction that inadvertently happened whenever someone else put a camera up to her face. For the amount of time she spent taking pictures of other people without permission, she detested having it done to her. Eli didn’t mean any harm by it though, and she knew that. She had never even told him of her distaste for it so there really wasn’t anything to hold against him.
He brought up possibly going to the petting zoo first, and she nodded her head in response. Rumor was that they had llamas there, and she had been anxiously waiting to see them. Photos came second to llamas, and the pretense that she was going to take pictures was the perfect cover to hang around their pen all day long if she wanted. “Yeah…the p-petting zoo sounds like a g-good start. They have l-l-llamas…” she said slowly, trying not to let her excitement get the best of her. It was hard not to when her favorite animal was also the hardest word for her to get out without a stutter.

HAVING KNOWN CORDIE FOR ALMOST HALF A year, he thought he had a good idea of her character. Or, at least, a fraction of it. She still barely spoke to him, but he'd gotten used to that by now. Eli could fill any negative space with his own voice, so it sort of worked, though after he'd cut her hair things had been a little tense. Eli felt guilty, and Cordie never said anything. Perhaps that was why he'd been so quick to invite himself along with her, to test the waters now that her hair looked... better.
"Oh, don't you like crowds?" He asked absently, examining his camera and side stepping a group of kids all with linked arms and flower crowns atop his head. He turned to snap a picture of their backs as they skipped off, and almost missed any reply Cordie attempted to make. He was still so easily distracted. "Awesome!" He let his camera dangle from his neck and motioned for them to head inside as Cordie gave her consent for a trip to the petting zoo. Eli leapt in to action, his gait long as he made a pathway through the crowds with loud exclamations of ''scuse me!', making sure he left room in his wake for his friend.
The petting zoo was almost a central attraction, and though they were in a greenhouse, it was surprisingly mild. A spell circulating a light spring time breeze that made the air smell like sweet lavender and roses. But, soon, all he could smell was the tang of hay and farm animals and his heart skipped a beat. That was the kind of environment Eli ached to be in, he tugged at his camera strap and turned to catch Cordie's sleeve as behind a white picket fence was an array of different animals all meandering around carelessly.
"Cord!" He exclaimed, his eyes wild with excitement. "They have baby Kneazles..." Eli had always wanted one, especially after he'd helped rescue a kitten last summer. But, it had taken his father to even allow a no-maj cat. If he came home with a Kneazle, his dad might drop dead. And then he turned, looking at the various signs for the llama's. Cordie had looked as animated as he'd ever seen her when she'd told him that. He couldn't find the plaque, but something looking very much like a llama was bobbing along its corner. "Hey- look!" He reached for her hand and grabbed it, pulling her around the fence to where the llama-like creature was yanking feed from a hanging box.

04.19.2025 “N-Not really,” she said quietly in response, unsure of how loud it had come out of her. She wasn’t sure if Eli was joking when he asked her whether or not she liked crowds. It was the sort of question that had her jaw slightly slack as his attention quickly turned to snapping a picture of a group of children walking towards the petting zoo. At some point the crowds would be too much for her, and she would retreat back to the castle for the remainder of the day. Then she could bask in the silence of the common room or library. Day’s like today, where everyone in the castle wanted to escape outside or to Hogsmeade, were her favorites in the castle. The occasional run in with a professor or student she sort of knew would happen (as it always seemed to), but that was better than being subjected to having a conversation over the din of the Great Hall or corridors.
Following him into the petting zoo was fairly easy despite the surging crowd that the new arrivals had created. Eli, like Lily, had a way with people that she would never have. Especially when it came to strangers. That may or may not have been the sole reason for backtracking on her potential career path with the hospital, despite her advances in healing spells over the last few years. Being able to heal a person was only half the battle and the rest was having to talk to patients and families. Cordelia found herself barely being able to talk to her friends sometimes, so strangers were definitely going to be out of the question. Pushing through a mass of people like Eli did would also be tough, not only because of her size, but because she enjoyed taking her time and scoping out her surroundings for good photography subjects. In her brief encounters with Eli and his camera, he had a more run and gun style of taking pictures. She had to give him the one time over the summer where he was scouting out for the gnome from up in the tree. That was a series amount of patience and commitment for the chance of getting a decent picture.
They stopped in front of a pen that had what looked like, at least from a distance, to be kittens. Eli’s exclamation that they were kneazles drew her in more though, since she had never seen a kneazle kit before. Peering over the edge of the fence to get a better look, she couldn’t help but think that they were basically magical cats, and it was no wonder that some households kept them as such. Neither of her parents would have ever let her get away with bringing one of them home though, because the family cat was sort of uptight about other animals. It had taken her a few years to get used to Cordelia’s orange tabby, and even then they weren’t exactly the best of friends. They maintained their territories in the house and made peace around the food bowl and that was basically the extent to their friendliness towards one another.
As she watched two of the kneazles tumbling around together, she felt a tug on her hand as Eli started to lead her towards another section of the petting zoo. It took her a second to realize he was pulling her in the direction of the llama, its head hidden amongst its hanging breakfast. Standing up on the small ledge that preceded the fence, Cordelia’s eyes widened as she watched the beast eat. The last time she had seen llamas, they had been way out in a field grazing. Watching intently, taking pictures to savor the moment didn’t even cross her mind.

THIS WAS THE MOST ANIMATED ELI HAD EVER seen Cordie. He'd pulled her towards the grazing, woolly beasts with his own intrigue, but she'd reacted far quicker than he'd imagined she would. It shocked him at first, how she moved swiftly to the fence, reaching up to peer straight in to the enclosure with zero hesitation. Her face had gone a bit pink, and Eli could see the whites of her eyes even from the side. She was struck with wonder, and for a second Eli found it far more interesting than the animals meandering inside. He snapped a quick picture of her profile back lit by the sun, gripping the fence.
"You like Alpaca's?" He asked after a second, shifting his gaze to the long necked, squishy faced creatures that had grabbed her attention. Their coats looked lighter than air and Eli reached across the fence to run the back of his hand against its hide as it past. Just light enough not to disturb it. There was an information board pinned to the wall just to Eli's right and his eyes skimmed over it to double check. Hand reared Alpaca's, rescued and raised in the local sanctuary. "I've always preferred Llama's, I think." Eli drawled conversationally, leaning his weight against the fence. "But, they're meaner."

▲ This was easily the best day of the year for Cordelia. Christmas day didn’t even come close to this, like, at all. The pen for the animals was open, so she could easily reach in and pet the llamas if she really wanted to. Her fingers were itching to graze the fur every time one passed by her, but she remained stationary on her perch, watching the llamas eat and do llama things. Lost in her own little world, she didn’t even register Eli coming up next to her and reaching out to pet one of the llamas passing by. And then he called it an alpaca. Her eyebrows furrowed as she looked at him, confused on why he was calling the llama something else. “Y-You mean l-l-llamas,” Cordelia corrected him, still unsure of what this ‘alpaca’ creature he was talking about actually was. Maybe that was the magical version of it? Sort of how kneazles could be bred with cats. She could only imagine what the magical properties of an alpaca’s wool would be, since llama’s wool tended to be extremely warm. Eli didn’t stop there with calling the llamas the wrong name; stating he liked llamas more but that they were meaner. Looking back and forth between the animals and Eli, Cordelia couldn’t believe what she was hearing. In what world were these majestic creatures mean? They were innocently going about their business, eating and ignoring all of the people looking at them. If anything, the students and festival goers were the mean ones, intruding on breakfast time. She wanted to keep her mouth shut, not really looking to instigate a debate on the personalities and quirks of wooly animals, but she couldn’t. “I-I d-don’t think they’re mean…” she said quietly, rocking back and forth on the ledge of the fence. The llamas in the pen were all fairly docile and didn’t mind the onlookers. How could Eli call them mean when they were happily going about their business? MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

ELI ALMOST FELT BAD FOR INTERRUPTING HER careful attention towards the enclosure. She came back to attention slowly, reluctantly, and he looked down at his lens to fill in the gap between her mind and her mouth. Cordie always seemed to put in a lot of thought to what she was going to say. Eli liked that about her. She never seemed to say anything silly. But, when she did speak he frowned, looking up from his camera with a slight smile.
"Nah, I meant Alpaca's." His eyes went back to the information board, the letters small but very clear. He motioned with his camera. "Llama's are bigger." He said by way of explanation. He then reached up to paw the top of his head. "And they have... like big banana ears." His fingers creating little waggling tentacles at the top of his head, he snickered. He was trying to make her laugh, but she was too busy looking in to the enclosure, a faraway look on her face. Had he embarrassed her. He scrambled to make it right.
"I mean, it's an easy mistake to make!" He said in a rush, stepping closer to her and peering inside where a black and white alpaca was trying to gnaw through a corner of the fence. "Llama's spit a lot, and they have longer faces." He looked introspectively in to the pen and wondered if the alpaca's knew about their big cousins. By the looks of things, Cordie definitely didn't. "They're not mean, you're right." He corrected himself, tutting at his own misfortune. He'd annoyed her for some reason, he knew he had. "Just... picky." He conceded.

▲ Eli was being incessant about the fact that these creatures were apparently called alpacas and not llamas, and she couldn’t figure out why. As far as she knew, this was just another name for the animal she adored – most likely the Americanized name for it. When it came to linguistics, Cordelia was far from being an expert and she would never claim to be one. So if Eli called the beasts alpacas, then they were alpacas. Cordelia was still going to call them llamas though, even if they were smaller and fuzzier, and had less banana-like ears. There was an easy fix to all of this though: there was a sign attached to the front of the fence. She had taken note of the when they had entered the building, but she found that her knowledge on llamas was sufficient enough to ignore it. But with Eli continuously peering down at it and trying to correct her, she was starting to think he was probably right, and that she was most certainly wrong. When it came to llamas (or alpacas?) she could hand Eli the victory that they were picky. Just watching these ones, she could tell that they were curious of the people watching them, but stayed far enough away so that they could protect their feeding areas. Which, from where she was standing, seemed to be very patchy from where they had pulled hay away in small clumps. “M-Maybe you’re right…” she started to admit as she hopped off the ledge in front of the fence and walked towards the sign. Just as Eli had insisted, the sign indicated that the animals were alpacas. There was even a section on how they were different from llamas. She liked Eli’s colorful description better. “I don’t understand,” Cordelia added, still confused on how she had managed to never learn of alpacas before. They were so similar to llamas, she probably just assumed they were one in the same. But these looked like the animals she had always thought were llamas, even similar to her beloved stuffed animal, Mr. Floofles. Was he an alpaca or a llama? The impending existential crisis had caused her face to contort in frustration as she looked back and forth between the sign and the alpacas in the pen, trying to discern where she had gone wrong. THE HONEST CONFUSION ON CORDIE'S FACE made Eli feel suddenly guilty. He didn't know what for, it was an honest mistake to make. But, Cordie looked positively stricken by the sudden realisation. "It's no big deal," Eli said in a rush, his smile wide and warm. "People get them mixed up all the time." He shrugged it off like it was nothing, but she was making a show of reading the information placard. And then it hit him, she didn't know what an alpaca was. It was just another llama to her.
Eli stepped towards her, his hands coming up over the fence, he didn't stare at her in case it made her uncomfortable. Instead he stared at the snuffling animals inside. "Alpaca's are like..." He wrinkled his nose in thought. "They're like the llama's less fancy little cousin." He snorted a bit, turning to look at her face. "The same, but a little less... dressed up." Though they were certainly dressed up for the event, someone had dyed their fluffy coats in varying shades of yellows and pinks.
"Alpaca's are easier to pet," He nudged her with his elbow, watching as one of the little guys trotted over in search of food. Eli reached down and pulled a couple handfuls of hay from between the fence, handing it to Cordie before reaching over and offering his own to the searching snout. It snuffled before gently chewing on the ends. "See?" He grinned, large and inviting. "Pet him while he's busy eating!" He told her, reaching his arm closer as the hay pile got smaller and smaller.

▲ Cordelia knew what Eli was doing: damage control. It was in earnest, she knew that. But it was still backpedaling nonetheless. There had been a lot of that the previous fall with her parent’s then impending divorce. The bulk of that had only been conveyed to Cordelia through letters from both parents trying to explain everything, but she knew what it was. At least in this instance, the differences between llamas and alpacas and how she had never known about the latter was completely on her, and Eli was trying to prevent the sudden mind-numbing confusion that was coursing through her head. How could she have been so clueless about the existence of alpacas? And nobody had ever corrected her before when she had called the creatures in front of her llamas. That sort of coddling by her parents was definitely adding to the poor image of them she now had in her head. Having Eli call them cousins definitely helped ease her confusion, because they honestly did look similar. The clear picture she had of llamas was certainly countered by these fluffy things in front of her, but they were very similar when it came down to it. As she continued to reason with her brain on how she had made such a mistake for so long, Eli nudged her and put some of the hay in her hand. One of the alpacas immediately headed towards them, apparently liking the hand-service. It ate diligently out of his hand, and Cordelia followed his instructions, reaching out with her free hand slowly, her fingers meeting the side of the alpaca’s face. The animal stopped for a second so it could watch what she was doing, but immediately resumed its meal as she rubbed its cheek. The wool was unbelievably soft, yet dense. Which made sense why they (and she supposed llamas too, though still didn’t know which) were used for their wool. “So a l-l-llama would’ve sp-spit at us?” she asked quietly, still petting the alpaca. WITH A HANDFUL OF HAY, ELI'S SMILE WAS tentative as he watched Cordie from the corner of his eye. She hadn't said anything for a long time and it was starting to make his skin itch. And when he was just about to stick his foot in his mouth again, she finally spoke. Eli sighed audibly, nodding his head with reckless abandon. "Yeah!" He laughed, cheeks creasing. "Well," His head tilted in thought, keeping his voice down as the alpaca flinched at the enthusiastic tone of his voice. "Probably."
The alpaca was incredibly docile, and Eli was thankful as he wedged his hay in the fence and leaned both his hands over to watch as he chewed, Cordie's hand buried in his soft coat. "They're sort of known for their tempers." Eli spoke quietly, his chin sitting on his crossed hands as he watched contentedly. This was his happy place. Being anywhere near animals and he felt incredibly at home. The smell of hay and wild animals resting his heart beat. "I wanna work with animals, you know." He said distractedly, slowly reaching over to run a single finger across a satin-y ear. "I gotta graduate first, though." And he cringed at the thought.

▲ Comparing llamas to alpacas was starting to prove rather difficult if their only difference was that the former spit and had a bad temper. She was already starting to mentally plan a Venn diagram between the two, just so she could have a clearer picture on which was which in the future. The only similarities she currently saw was that both were big and fluffy. And those weren’t complaints on her end. “Th-That’s okay…” Cordelia mused as she continued to rub the side of the alpaca’s face. As long as she had a stream of hay for it to feed on, it didn’t look like it was going to leave her alone. Grabbing another handful of feed for her new friend, Eli explained that he wanted to work with animals after graduating. “M-Magical ones?” she asked, curious to the fact that he was only now bringing his plans for the future up. Graduation was in a little over a month from now too. There had plenty of waffling on her own party when it came to her own career over the last few years, but at least she had a back-up plan with her photography. Working with animals definitely seemed fun, regardless of whether they were magical ones or not. “Are y-you okay in all of y-your classes?” Cordelia added. She looked back at the alpaca just in time to see it starting to nudge at the remainder of the hay clutched in her held out fist. “If you n-n-need any help…I c-can…”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

THOUGH HE'D THOUGHT IT UTTERLY UNLIKELY, Elijah was beginning to realise he had a lot more in common with Cordie than he'd originally thought. Her serene expression as she fed hay to the Alpaca, hand rubbing its soft, woollen face. She liked animals, she liked photography. He wondered why he'd never known that about her before, and then he realised that she only ever seemed to speak when spoken to, and even then it was a hit or a miss. God, Elijah needed to learn to stop talking.
"We'd probably deserve it." He replied, smirking slightly as it's large pink tongue lolled out of its mouth. Elijah picked up his camera and snapped a quick shot, tongue out, Cordelia's hand delicately feeding it. As he dropped the camera, hanging loose against his chest, he thought about her answering question. "I don't know, hopefully." Shrugging his shoulders as he leaned against the fence. "I mean, there are a couple of internships but they're pretty competitive." He thought of the Scamander internship and felt a fizzle of excitement. That was the dream, unlikely as it were.
"No- no, honestly I'm fine." Eli waved his hand, laughing in quiet embarrassment, his face red. If anybody knew how Eli struggled, it was Cordie. And she was so nice about it, too. "I don't wanna talk shop, I wanna explore!" He didn't want to be stupid again, or to talk about being stupid. Cordie meant well, but Eli thought about school the same way Cordie probably felt about oral presentations. "C'mon," He reached forward and tugged on her sleeve and then grabbing her hand. "We'll circle back, I promise." He added, anticipating her reluctance. "Maybe even smuggle one for the dorms."

▲ Her face screwed up in partial disgust as the alpaca’s tongue engulfed her hand, trying to get every bit of feed from her as it could. The moment was funnier than anything else, but she hadn’t expected the animal to go all in and think her hand was part of the snack too. The click of a camera next to her had her turning to see Eli letting it hang. That picture was going to turn out lovely. The alpaca had to give her hand another lick for good measure, despite there only being a few pieces of hay stuck to it, and that seemed to be it for Cordelia. She wiped it off on the front of her jacket, a string of drool rubbing off with the hay. At least the alpaca was cute. That made up for it in the end. Eli seemed fairly adamant that he was fine, but she wasn’t totally oblivious when it came to reading tones. She understood the fear of graduation, and whether or not the last seven years had really prepared her for what came next or not. They were supposed to be, but she didn’t feel like she was in the slightest. There had been no pressure from either of her parents when it came to asking her what she wanted to do, and even the school seemed fairly nonchalant about it. How was that supposed to make her feel better about graduating and jumping head first into the working world? It made her want to retreat back into her own little world again, and then the last three years of working towards slightly breaking out of her shell would be for naught. “At l-least y-you have a plan…” she muttered quietly, her hands batting away at the quickly drying slobber and hay on her jacket. He had a point though, today wasn’t really a good day to be talking about those sorts of things. They were about to be slammed with end of term papers and ungodly amounts of studying for exams. She nodded her head in agreement and let him take her hand to drag her onto the next thing. Just in time too, as the she felt the hot breath of the alpaca reaching over the fence to try and attempt a nibble on her hair. In the animal’s defense, her hair was pretty straw-like.
