ELI DIDN'T HEAR ASHLEY JEST ABOUT THE BALL drop. He didn't hear anything at all. Blood rushed painfully in his ears, the adrenaline making him jumpy and agitated. And, before the ball had even dropped he had grabbed Ashley and kissed her. And for a moment every one of Eli's senses maxed out. A dizzy feeling making them sway slightly as he drew in a breath. They had kissed before - once. He had never forgotten, but coming back was different. She felt different, but familiar.
He knew the shape of her hip when his hand found it, pulling their bodies flush. Her cheek soft under palm as he cupped it, and their lips fit together as they had once been clumsy. Chin tilting as they moved just slightly, as if to test the waters. She didn't push him away, but seemed to melt in to him, Distantly, he heard the shattering of fireworks and cheering. It was a new year and he had brought it in kissing Ashley, just as he had promised himself he would.
After a moment, he sighed in to her mouth as he pulled away. He needed to look at her face, their forehead touching gently as he stared at her up close. He felt like they were back in that meadow. So close together he could smell her perfume and the sweet, clean scent of her shampoo. "I've wanted to do that for a while." He laughed, snorting through his nose as he pulled away enough to tilt his chin towards the sky, the last smattering of fireworks lighting up the sky as they reflected his electric mood. "Happy New Year!" He cheered, still holding her close, unwilling to let go. He looked back down at her, his thumb caressing the swell of her cheekbone, eyes alight. "Happy New Year," He repeated, quieter this time as he leaned down and kissed her again.

Kissing Eli was right. The feel of his arms around her, his hands on her waist and cupping her cheek all felt right and finally Ashley felt whole again. Eli was kissing her. She hadn't forced him into it, hadn't asked him to. He was kissing her because he wanted to and Ashley was going to enjoy it. She kissed him back, slowly lifting one of her hands so she could twirl his hair around her fingers. She'd wanted to play with his hair for ages and now she finally was. He pulled away with a sigh and Ashley looked up at him, grinning unashamedly. He kept their foreheads together and Ashley sighed, letting the feeling of happiness take complete control over her now as she lowered her hand back to Eli's shoulder. She was with Eli. Really with him, and now she was going to tell him how she felt. Before she could, he admitted that he wanted to kiss her for a while. Ashley's smile widened. "I've wanted you to as well. I ... really like you Eli. A lot." She was trying to be as blunt as she could, wanting to make sure there wouldn't be any miscommunications like there were with their first kiss. She laughed when Eli cheered as he held her close, then looked down at her. The look in his eyes was so sweet and soft and for the first time she could actually tell what that expression meant. He liked her back. Ashley closed her eyes, smiling so hard she felt like she would burst. "Happy New Year," she echoed in a soft whisper, finishing right as their lips touched and she lost herself in Eli's kiss. She didn't care if someone else came onto the balcony and saw, didn't care if someone told Joe and he found out this way. All she wanted was to be here with Eli. Ashley had no idea how long the two of them kissed before pulling apart again. She was breathless, but she still couldn't keep herself from laughing. She moved her hand to caress Eli's cheek, smiling up at him softly. "I didn't think this was ever going to happen," she admitted softly, allowing herself to be fully vulnerable with the one person she trusted who wasn't family. Eli. Elijah Theron Fleming

THEY HAD KISSED BEFORE, BUT IT WAS A LITTLE different this time. No less charged, but more purposeful. There was nothing stopping Eli this time. He wasn't afraid he was making a mistake or that he was ruining their friendship. She had kissed him back and he had made the right choice. It didn't matter what happened after, Eli would remember this moment with importance. They were on the same page, what happened next felt promising.
With her body wrapped close to his, he swayed them back and forth as they watched the fireworks. His throat bobbing with easy laughter. When he dipped his chin to kiss her again she met him without hesitation. Her soft lips fitting neatly against his, he sighed, shoulder sagging. As if kissing her released the tension in his shoulders, the uncertainty in his heart. Her hands coming to cradle his face, his own reaching up to catch her fine boned wrist, thumb rubbing against her pulse.
"Me too." He muttered, watching her flushed face back lit by thundering fireworks, sparkling in each of her eyes. He loved her then, felt it recognised in the deepest cavity of his heart. He loved her and a part of him thought he always would. Giddy with it. "We're good, you know?" His nose scrunched with a smile, tongue dashing across his bottom lip so that he could taste her. "We've got this." And in that moment, they did. "C'mon, let's go back inside before they send a search party." He stayed close, clasping her hand in his, uncaring who knew or presumed a thing about them. They'd be right.
@ashley do you want to wrap this up in your next post and we can move on to closer past threads?

She and Eli were finally on the same page. It was a relief and a delight to not have to hide the way she felt anymore. However, now that they were together, kissing and admitting their feelings, she realized she probably didn't have to try and hide it so long. And she realized that she probably hadn't done a good job of hiding it in the first place. Was this what he really wanted all that time he was trying to convince her to let them be friends again. Did he know then that he still cared for her this way? Probably. Instead of growing annoyed with herself for wasting all that time, Ashley focused on now. She focused on the feel of his arms around her, of the warmth and protection and affection she felt. She closed her eyes, breathing deeply and laughing along with Eli. This was something to be happy about. Not something to beat herself up about. She nodded as he said they were good, then smirked a little. "I mean, we better be good now, don't you think?" she teased, squeezing his hand and chuckling softly. She nodded, agreeing as he led her back inside. She didn't care who saw her with Eli. In fact, part of her wished more people would notice the pair of them walking in together. Then the rumors would go faster and everyone would know sooner, which she wouldn't change for the world. She wanted the world to know that she and Eli were finally together. --- The end! --- Elijah Theron Fleming
