▲ A crazy family? Sure. You could call it that. Nell still didn’t know where her sister got her personality from. Their parents weren’t like that at all, and neither were any of their older relatives. Calling the shop and inheritance her responsibility wasn’t exactly a good reason to be a bitch to everyone either. And the way she treated Frankie? “I think there are plenty of families out there that are crazier than ours…we just have more on the line than some.” It seemed like a sufficient answer for someone who didn’t really know the Ollivanders. Nell always doubted that either of her brothers would have wanted the shop (assuming Frankie could use magic), and she certainly never saw it in her future. Her previous answer, about wanting to at least lighten the load, was honest. “It’s fine. It pushed me to open this place. Expedited the process a bit, but I’ve yet to see anything wrong with it.” Aside from her suffering bank account. If it got any lower in the coming months, Gringotts was going to be gaining a hefty loan from her. And if Veronica caught wind of that? That would be the end of any social status Nell ever had. Eviscerated by her sister’s standing. This brother of hers sounded like an absolute klutz. Veronica was probably furious having to see him a second time within a decade. Nell sort of understood, in a way. All the hard work they put into their wands and to have someone carelessly break it? Wands had ‘souls’ too, and seeing their magic snuffed out just like that was difficult. “Well, I’ll be here for when he does need one. Maybe I’ll make one that’s impossible to break…that might work for him,” Nell grinned at her. That was a goal to strive for. There were plenty of harder woods out there she could source from, maybe even make him something a bit more unconventional. Not everyone was good with just a piece of wood. CALLIOPE HUMMED IN UNDERSTANDING, THE woman had a fair point. Some families had it worse than others, but still, Cal felt it was wrong to invalidate the owners’ own problems with her family. ”I suppose…But still, a family problem with no near solution…Is still a massive problem.” Cal frowned a bit, relating Nell’s issues to her own. The Fleming family wasn’t exactly…A happy family. ”I’m glad you found your own solution though…For a small and new owner…I think you’ll do well…” Nell seemed to have a kind heart, even if it was a facade (which Cal highly doubted).
”Though…Opening a store alone must have cost a hefty price…” Cal knew that issue. Her savings went towards her current home that she rarely lived in due to her couch potato father. He didn’t want to do anything, nor did he believe he needed to — despite having four children to look after. What a joke. ”I’m sure he would like that.” Cal laughed. ”He gets his clumsiness from his good older sister.” Cal lifted her hand then, her thumb pointing back at herself. ”Me!”

▲ Having to wade through so much negativity over the last few months just to get this point was hilariously worth it. Escaping her sister’s microscope of scrutiny was certainly a weight off her shoulders, but Cal also had a point. Nell wasn’t even sure if she cared about the family problem anymore. She had her own place to worry about, and if she let that slip away from her, who would she be anymore? She very well couldn’t go crawling back to Veronica at this point, and that was assuming she even had that option. Her own successes and failures had a different level of weightiness to them now, but she was prepared for that. “Thanks. It took seven years to get here…but it’s here. The only problem is that I bring sawdust home with me,” she said, pointing up at the ceiling to indicate that her home was literally right above them. Getting into the issues she had with maintaining two rents was a whole other story too, but it sort of answered Cal’s next comment, about opening the store. “Despite my opinions on how my sister runs her shop, she paid me unbelievably well. I don’t know if she thought she was undercutting me or not, but I kept that to myself.” And topping off her normal salary with wand sales for the year or so before opening the shop had really helped her out in the long run. Every galleon mattered at that point. Now it was more a matter of keeping things up and running. Gaining Cal’s patronage, and maybe her brother’s as well, was definitely an important bridge to build. “While I’d love to keep selling both of you wands, please be careful with these ones. They aren’t like the starter wands my sister makes.” Nell liked to think her wands had personalities and feelings, and while the majority of the Ollivander stock was just as ‘alive’ as hers was, she felt more attached to her own creations here. Making sure they survived out in the world by building strong wands was her only purpose in life for the time being. Without that, she was almost better off working as an apprentice the rest of her life. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

WITH A SMALL SMILE, CALLIOPE nodded at Nell, listening and paying close attention. ”Seven years is…a long time to commit to something…So I believe you can continue without your siblings.” But following Nell’s pointer finger, she laughed quietly to herself. ”I’m guessing…Your apartment is above here?” It was expected, considering Nell was a new store-owner plus it made rents and getting to work a lot easier than the next person. ”How oddly…generous of her. Even if she didn’t realise it.” Calliope wished she could relate, she barely made enough to scrap her dad’s rent without dipping into her savings a little. But for the last month or so, she had her father rely on either himself or her other sibling. The Fleming was barely even there to be paying such bills anyway.
With a playful pffft leaving her mouth, Cal flicked her wrist at Nell. ”Careful is my middle name!” That was true…If you replaced careful with extreme-dumbass. ”But I promise not to be so…reckless like the last one. I made… bad choices with that one.” Eli however would probably treasure the wand with his entire life, before making a bad choice in the heat of a moment.

▲ The way Cal interpreted the amount of time Nell had been wandmaking suddenly made her feel old. Judging by the way the girl talked about her career, she was probably only a year or two in…which meant that Nell had been making wands for her sister right around when Cal started school. And now she had a shop. Gideon made her feel ancient as it was - this was almost just as bad. “Seven years as an apprentice, but as an Ollivander you start learning from the second you show signs of magic. So I guess technically I’ve been doing this for twenty years at least.” Experience was everything, which she had been constantly reminded about while at Ollivander’s. Obviously she would reach her sister’s potential at some point, and then her older relatives as well. It was in her blood after all. She chuckled as the girl stated careful was her middle name. Somehow, she didn’t believe that, but it was funny regardless. “I think we all believe our wands are invincible. Beginner wands are certainly made with more durable woods and cores usually. But I think you’ll like that one. It’s been one of my favorites, so as long as you treat it well, it’ll return the favor.” Seeing it snapped would break her heart, but that was the reality when it came to wands. There were certain things that even they couldn’t stand up to. The ebony wand, at least from what she had seen so far, had more give to it. Withstanding clumsiness would be the least of its worries. “I look forward to you bringing your brother by though. I’m sure I’ll have something for him by then,” Nell stated, holding her hand out for Cal. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

TWENTY YEARS IN THE MAKING? Calliope’s eyes rose in surprise, taking on a ringing yellow colour from curiosity and happiness. ”Twenty?..Dear Merlin…” Was Nell really that old? She looked so young! Well, Cal assumed so anyway. Thought the store was the same as the Fleming herself, struggling to live and pass by each day in the weird limbo of age. Yet she was doing fine here, alone for a store she had saved up for. Calliope just wished she had enough motivation to fight for the job she wanted to stick to. After all, a few months to a year of training was completely and utterly nothing to her father anyway. But the Fleming knew she would give up her mere boring life — and even the roof under her head — just to go back to the thing she enjoyed.
She just needed Eli and her other younger sibling to graduate first.
”Oh trust me…” Calliope began, her little Cheshire grin covering her lips. ”No wand of mine is invincible by any means…” While the Fleming had a bad streak of taking care the majority of her wands, the wands that she did take care for — or overly care for — were usually her expensive ones. And with helping out a small business, the cost of these wands were bound to be a little more dear. ”But I promise and will absolutely guarantee you that I won’t bring harm to this one…” Especially since Nell somewhat begged her so nicely. Plus the wand was too nice to tarnish like previous ones. ”I’ll give you some time of course before our next visit…No pressure and all.”
Nell rose her hand then and Cal rose it to meet with hers, unsure if she wanted to shake her hand in agreement or something else.

▲ She knew that her comment about how long she had been making wands had come out weird, and Nell noticed the confusion in the girl’s eyes. Literally, because they changed colors as she processed what had just been said. “I mean, I showed signs of magic when I was five, so my dad started showing me how to carve wood from that point on,” Nell added, feeling like she owed an explanation of sorts. Twenty years as a long time to be working at one thing. That was how the family functioned though, and when there was a guaranteed career from the family business, it was hard to look the other way. She knew that if Frankie hadn’t turned out to be a squib, and had instead taken up wandmaking, she probably would have done something else. There was no need for three Ollivander children to be doing the same thing. Gabriel certainly wasn’t committing himself to it quickly. “If you do end up damaging it, wrap some spell-o-tape around the break and bring it back here as fast as possible. Unless it’s in two pieces or completely obliterated, I should be able to repair it.” Especially her own wands. She knew the ins and outs of each one, which was something like the Ollivander family curse. They were imbued with wand lore from the second they could remember, and had a weird knack for understanding the wood and cores. If the wand wasn’t burned to a crisp, she could probably fix it. She believed that Cal could do it, especially because the wand she had chosen was hardier than most. If the girl had only bought wands at Ollivanders and subpar shops, there was a chance the wood wasn’t all that good. This one had been an improvement on an earlier creation, and made to be roughed up a bit while on the job. It would most definitely last a long time. “Well, just bring him on by after he graduates then. I’ll be here,” she smiled as she took Cal’s hand and shook it. [END?] MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0
