August 1, 2001 It was already over a year into a new millennium, and life for Parvati Patil had never been better. After all of the years that she had spent at Hogwarts and having to navigate tragedy after tragedy, the magical world was being brought back together. Kingsley Shacklebolt was Minister for Magic. Corruption at the scale that they had known only years prior was a thing of the past, it seemed. There were hardly threats of Dark magic around, and no Dolores Umbridges or Carrows threatening to overtake Hogwarts. The losses of the war still weighed on everyone, especially the former members of Dumbledore's Army and the Order of the Phoenix, but they were content in the knowledge that Lord Voldemort had been defeated and that the Death Eaters were deceased or locked in Azkaban.
Parvati, herself, had begun a career for herself as a journalist for Witch Weekly. Although she was no longer an intern, she yearned for the day when she would be able to have her own column in the women's magazine. The Muggle fashion trends were too interesting to pass up, and she wished that she could have been given the freedom to cover them.
As she made her way through Diagon Alley on her way back to her parents', she paused at the sight of a young man about her age. It wasn't difficult to recognize those glasses. "Harry!" She beamed, waving. It had been a while since she had last seen him.

Harry was happy to have the day off from the Auror's Department. He loved the work, but it was always nice to have a break, even if he was a little bit of a workaholic. Ginny was still at work though, so were Hermione and Ron, so Harry decided to not make any official plans and just hang out. He stopped in front of Quality Quidditch Supplies, as he often did, leaning forward to look at the brooms on display. He didn't play Quidditch as much anymore, but he still considered buying whatever the new hot thing was... he kind of worried he'd start collecting them and then his house would be full of them... but that wasn't the woooorst thing. He heard his name and turned to look, smiling a little half grin and raising a hand for a quick wave. "Hey, Parvati." He had always liked Parvati Patil, even if he was kind of a dick to her at the Yule Ball due to his Cho obsession. Awe, teenagers. "How are you? I heard you were working at... the Prophet, right?"parvati patil macmillan

August 1, 2001 "Hey, Parvati." Harry grinned at her and gave a slight wave, clearly trying to avoid drawing too much attention to himself. "How are you? I heard you were working at… the Prophet, right?"
Parvati shook her head as she moved towards Harry, only then realizing that he was standing in front of where else but Quality Quidditch Supplies. "Even better," she assured him. "I'm working for Witch Weekly!" It was a perfect fit for her if ever there was one, she thought. She got to write about fashion and culture and gossip all day; it was practically made for her! "Happy birthday, by the way," she added. "Sorry I didn't send you an owl yesterday. Ernie and I went out after work, so I didn't get a chance."

She shook her head and he felt a pang of guilt that he got it wrong. He didn't expect to know everything about all his old friends but he kind of hoped he at least had some idea. Well, at least it was a newspaper. "Oh! That's great, really great. You like it, I'm assuming? Since you said it was better and all," he was talking a little fast and he stopped himself. Then she said happy birthday and his brow furrowed, forgetting for a second until she said it was yesterday and he shook his head. "No, no it's okay. I was working and kind of spaced on it. Even Ginny was swamped with Quidditch practice," he explained, chuckling. "Thank yo- wait, Ernie? Ernie who?" parvati patil macmillan

August 1, 2001 "Oh! That's great, really great. You like it, I'm assuming? Since you said it was better and all." Harry was rambling on, although he didn't seem to realize it. He was stopped only by her belated birthday wish for him. He looked confused, and Parvati questioned if maybe she had gotten the date wrong until he spoke again, assuring her that it was okay. "No, no it's okay. I was working and kind of spaced on it. Even Ginny was swamped with Quidditch practice. Thank yo—wait, Ernie? Ernie who?"
"Ernie Macmillan," Parvati answered him as though it was the most obvious thing in the world. "We're sort of talking… Or, well, we've done more than talk," she dished. "We ran into each other again a few months ago, and…" Ernie had been really charming.

Harry grimaced, and didn't bother hiding it. "Wait, seriously? You're dating Ernie Macmillan?" then he shook his head. "Ernie's a good guy," he suggested, though he still wasn't sure of his opinion of the guy. He thought Harry was the heir of Slytherin, then changed his mind. He thought Harry cheated to get into the Tri-Wizard tournament, then changed his mind. He was part of the DA, though, and a very strong member at that. He believed in the cause almost more than anyone else... he could be a good match for Parvati, if he could just commit to something. "As long as he's treating you well, Parvati, then I'm happy for you. I still find it kind of surprising. Always thought you'd end up with some gorgeous frenchman or something," he joked. parvati patil macmillan

August 1, 2001 Parvati watched as Harry's facial expression turned sour. "Wait, seriously?" he questioned her, as though she had just said that she was dating Gregory Goyle or something. "You're dating Ernie Macmillan?"
She almost cut in. What was so wrong with dating Ernie Macmillan? Sure, he hadn't always held the greatest opinion of Harry when they were in school, but wouldn't Harry have gotten over that?
"Ernie's a good guy," he added, though he didn't sound too convinced about what he was saying. "As long as he's treating you well, Parvati, then I'm happy for you. I still find it kind of surprising. Always thought you'd end up with some gorgeous Frenchman or something."
Sighing, Parvati shook her head. Yes, there had been that guy from Beauxbatons, but that had been all the way back in their fourth year! "He is a good guy," she explained. "Really, Harry. Otherwise, I wouldn't be dating him." She had more sense than that. Ernie Macmillan was dreamy.
"And how's Ginny?" she asked, attempting to get Harry off her case by asking about his girlfriend.

Parvati sighed, shaking her head, and Harry just shrugged. He meant what he said. She said Ernie was a good guy which was... fine, he guessed. "Yeah, yeah," he waved a hand dismissively. When she asked how Ginny was, Harry took the bait. "She's amazing, better than ever, I think. She is definitely up to something, though. We didn't get to do anything on my birthday but I have no idea what's coming up this weekend when we both have work off... you know Ginny. Either she has something totally elaborate planned or she'll pretend nothing ever happened."parvati patil macmillan

August 1, 2001 It wasn’t too difficult to get Harry off of her case; all that she had to do was bring up his significant other, and he was back to rambling. It was cute, though, the way he talked about Ginny; Parvati hoped that Ernie was the same way with her even when she wasn’t around.
On Ginny, Harry could hardly contain himself. “She's amazing, better than ever, I think,” he said. “She is definitely up to something, though. We didn't get to do anything on my birthday but I have no idea what's coming up this weekend when we both have work off… you know Ginny. Either she has something totally elaborate planned or she'll pretend nothing ever happened.”
Parvati laughed and shook her head. Ginny wasn’t about to let Harry’s birthday pass completely unacknowledged; she wasn’t cruel. Of course they would do something. “Oh, she just doesn’t want to embarrass you, Harry!” she giggled. “It’s your birthday. She obviously hasn’t forgotten it.” She would have been truly shocked if Ginny had forgotten it; Ginny wasn’t a forgetful person like that.

Parvati laughed, saying that Ginny wouldn't want to embarrass him. He shook his head vigorously. "She ABSOLUTELY wouldn't care about embarrassing me. In fact, she'd love it," he said firmly. Ginny was the type who would make a complete fool out of him, in a completely loving way, but she would definitely do it. "What about you and Padma? What are your birthday plans? I'd imagine you occasionally like to celebrate separately, hah," he always kind of wished he was a twin, if only for the soul purpose of not being an only child... well, in some ways maybe Neville was like a twin. parvati patil macmillan

August 1, 2001 Harry shook his head and said that Ginny wouldn't care about embarrassing him; she'd love it. Probably to avoid further embarrassment, he then changed the subject to her and her sister. "What about you and Padma? What are your birthday plans?" he asked. "I'd imagine you occasionally like to celebrate separately, hah."
"Oh, I can't imagine not doing something with Padma. I mean, our birthday isn't until January," Parvati laughed; it was still about half a year away. "But you know us. We'll probably have a little party," she thought. "Little", though, was more of a relative term, coming from her. It wouldn't be too extravagant, but she and Padma had enough close friends combined that there was simply no way to whittle down a guest list.
"And of course you'll be invited, Harry," Parvati added as she smiled, if that was his concern. "And the rest of the DA, naturally." She hadn't forgotten about them.
"I wouldn't mind it if Ernie did something special—you know, just for me," she admitted, blushing slightly. "It would be so romantic, you know?" Whatever Ernie might eventually plan for her, Parvati knew that she would love it. And she also knew that Ginny was bound to do the same for Harry.

She said that she couldn't imagine not spending her birthday with her twin and reminded him of when her birthday was. He chuckled. She mentioned their party and he nodded, "yes, of course. I'm sorry I wasn't around for the last birthday... though I'm sure I've already apologized for that," he added. Just hearing the term 'The DA' made a warm feeling run through him. He grinned, "original or otherwise? Because that's not a 'small' party, Parvati," he teased. She said she wouldn't mind if Ernie did something special and Harry grimaced a little, then immediately pushed it away. "You think you'll be together in six months? I mean, it would be romantic. Yeah, it'd be nice. I've never been good at that," he loved Ginny, but she was so... well, she always told him not to do anything special and when he tried she'd either really love it or just affectionately giggle at his terrible attempt. parvati patil macmillan

August 1, 2001 Harry apologized for having missed her birthday, which Parvati was fairly sure that he had done months before, much closer to when it actually had been her birthday. She had to laugh, because she knew he hadn’t done it to be a terrible person. Harry was just… like that, though she hoped for Ginny’s sake that he had written down her birthday and stuck it somewhere where he would commit it to memory. Hopefully, she thought, Ernie would never forget anything important like that.
In response to her comment about inviting “the rest of the DA”, Harry caught her and grinned. “Original or otherwise?” he checked. “Because that's not a 'small' party, Parvati.”
“It would be for me,” she giggled. “…Even if we’re going with ‘otherwise.’” She didn’t take things like that lightly, and of course she would invite anyone and everyone she could. That was one of the perks of sharing a birthday with her sister; they could have a joint party, and no one would think that they were being ridiculous for it.
As for Ernie, Harry asked if she thought that they would still be together in six months. “I mean, it would be romantic. Yeah, it'd be nice. I've never been good at that.”
Parvati nodded and could feel herself blushing. “Easily,” she giggled. “He’s just so… I don’t know,” she started. “It really feels different with him, Harry. I don’t know how to describe it, but we’re just so compatible…” Of course, she had used every form of divination possible to ensure their compatibility, too. It was almost assured.

She said that the whole DA would be considered 'small' for her, to which he nodded. She could be a bit... extra about stuff like this, so that was a pretty small group in comparison. As far as Ernie was concerned, she said she "easily" could see them being together in six months... that freaked him out. How was she so sure? He was sure of Ginny well, because it was impossible not to be. Did she feel that way about Ernie? That was... a lot. She said it felt 'different' and his brow furrowed. And 'compatible' even. He cleared his throat, his mind immediately jumping to a not so clean place when she used that word. He shrugged, shaking it off, "honestly, I definitely can't say I know anything about your relationship. If you feel good about it, then that's good. I'm happy for you," he smiled. parvati patil macmillan

August 1, 2001 Harry seemed almost perplexed by her, but that was generally how he was around women, in Parvati’s experience. She found it amusing as he shrugged off whatever he was thinking about and admitted that he honestly couldn’t say that he knew anything about her relationship with Ernie. “If you feel good about it, then that's good. I'm happy for you,” he smiled, which… meant a lot, coming from Harry.
“Thanks,” Parvati beamed. “I mean, it’s about time, isn’t it?” Their adult lives were falling into place, and the Second Wizarding War would eventually be nothing more than a distant memory to them. “Besides me and Ernie and everything,” she explained with a small sigh, relaxing her shoulders. “It’s nice, you know, to just… breathe again.” They could just go out and catch up with people and live their lives, and she was sure that Harry had felt that pressure lift.
