april 1, 2025 As far as Rose was concerned, April Fool's Day should have been a national holiday. Sadly, it was just a plain Tuesday, which meant she had to go to work - and spend the entire day paranoid that one of her coworkers was going to prank her. A sad side effect of being a Weasley was that everyone seemed to think it was hilarious to use Weasley's Wizard Wheezes products against her. Betrayed by her own family, Rose thought with a sigh as she dodged another Aviatomobile that was unleashed in her small cubicle. At least the pranks had been mostly harmless, though the more dangerous ones probably wouldn't have made it through the Ministry's front doors.
Rose sighed, dodged the flying car toy again, and decided now was as good a time as any to take her lunch. Leaving her cubicle unguarded probably wasn't a smart idea, but trusting food someone else brought her so she could take lunch at her desk was an even less smart idea. Rose headed down to the cafeteria, scanning the crowd to see if she could spot anyone she knew to eat with.

[attr="class","eclair-clear"] [attr="class","eclair-wrapper"] [attr="class","eclair-post"] Alice had forgotten her lunch... again. It had been the third time that week. She had never been THAT forgetful of her lunch before. Like... one time a week tops. She had way too much on her mind as of late. That had to be the problem. She sighed and accepted the fact that she had to go to the cafeteria... the very crowded cafeteria. [break][break] It wasn't as crowded as she imagined it would be, but it was crowded nonetheless. She almost bumped into three people as she made her way over to the trays, and then someone almost caused her to drop it once she grabbed one. She took a deep breath, and then grabbed her grilled chicken salad, a light dressing, and bottle of Gilly Water and paid before walking out. She looked about and thought she would be sitting alone again until she turned to see a familiar face standing there. [break][break] "Oh... hi Rose!" she said. "Lovely seeing you here. Found a place to eat yet?" She then blushed nervously. "Not that there aren't empty tables of course. What I mean to say is... well if you need a dining companion... we're companions... well mates rather... good mates." She took a deep breath. "Let's sit together." Alice felt the two had indeed been good mates, just as her father had been good friends with Rose's parents for many years. Rose recognized Alice at almost the same moment the other girl greeted her, and she smiled back warmly at Alice. She shook her head when the other woman asked if she’d found a place to eat; she had intended to find an eating partner and then a place, rather than vice versa. Alice stumbled through a bit of a ramble about how they were friends, finally ending with an invitation to eat together. “Sure,” she answered, feeling her answer was a bit bare in response to Alice’s words. “Let me grab something to eat and I’ll meet you over there?” She nodded to one of the empty tables, pausing a moment to make sure Alice agreed before going to pick up her lunch. Rose bought a simple sandwich, a bottle of juice, and an apple – a balanced lunch, as far as she was concerned – and took her plate back to the table where Alice was. She checked her seat for any pranks before lowering herself down gingerly, relieved when there was no fake farting accompanying her sitting.
“I feel like it’s been forever since we spoke,” Ro said, tilting her head to the side. Their families being friends could only carry them so far, and everyone seemed to be busy lately. That was adulthood was about, she supposed. “What’s been going on in your life?”

[attr="class","eclair-clear"] [attr="class","eclair-wrapper"] [attr="class","eclair-post"] Alice nodded as Rose went to get her food. She gave awkward hellos to people who passed her, though she wasn't sure if she knew some of them. She was just trying to be friendly though, despite having that shyness about her. She was relieved when Rose returned though. They headed to the table and Alice watched curiously as Rose was checking for something. She then gulped [break][break] "Oh don't tell me THESE chairs are enchanted," she said. "Just last week, I had to go to a Muggle restaurant named after this fellow named McDonald. Some prankster had enchanted the chairs. I reversed the magic, but our Obliviator had quite the job ahead of her. The place was very popular. I don't know why because the food looked horrid." [break][break] Once they were settled, Alice was asked what had been going on with her life. She sighed a bit at that. Her life outside of work had been everything from mediocre to worrisome. [break][break] "I wish I could say it's been well," she said. "But with what happened to Dad, it's been a bit of a struggle for the family. Work's really all that's kept my mind off of it." She then gave her friend a small smile. "Anyway, how are you? I have missed you and Hugo a good deal, and your mum and dad of course. If only we could go back to the Hogwarts days, eh?" Alice made a comment about the chairs being enchanted, and Rose smothered a laugh. “No, they aren’t – it’s just that today’s April Fool’s Day, and, well… you know my family.” She didn’t think any of her family would go so far as to deface Ministry property by enchanting the chairs, but then again, they were revolutionaries. Ro listened as Alice recounted the story of visiting a restaurant where the chairs had been enchanted, and Rose’s eyebrow ticked up. “Maybe it was cheap?” People were willing to eat absolutely horrendous food if it didn’t cost much. Of course, if you knew where to go you could have food that was both good and cheap, but most people didn’t put in the effort necessary to find those places.
Rose made a sympathetic noise in the back of her throat when Alice said her life wasn’t going well. She knew that the former headmaster had taken ill, but news about his recovery or lack thereof was kept tight to the chest. Alice turned the question back, and Ro swallowed. She still wasn’t sure how many people knew of her parents’ separation and impending divorce, and she wasn’t keen on talking about it with many people – even Alice. “Hogwarts days before there started being murders would be ideal,” Rose agreed. Things had been simpler then; she had known her place in the world. “I’ve been enjoying work, but I’ve not been much good at having a life outside of it.” She needed more friends.

[attr="class","eclair-clear"] [attr="class","eclair-wrapper"] [attr="class","eclair-post"] Alice then went pale at the reminder of what happened on April First. She had been the victim of those pranks, both in school and after. Even after all her family achieved, being a Longbottom made one a target. She checked her chair again before sitting down. All seemed okay. [break[break] "Worst day of the year," she said. "Well, not the worst, but darn near there... pardon my language." Alice obviously didn't do a lot of swearing. Alice then shrugged about the horrid food being cheap. It was from what she recalled of the prices. But still, horrid. "I usually eat at home, or bring food from home... obviously not today... so I suppose I wouldn't know alot about such places." [break][break] Alice frowned when Rose spoke of the murders. Alice remembered that all too well. She still had nightmares because of that. When shew as awake, she tried to forget the incidents though. She felt she'd go mad if she thought of them all the time. [break][break] "Yes, definitely back in the good times," she said. "Back before the world decided to go dark again. I remember when I was a child and Dad would tell me about when... well... you know who sought to take over, and how things seemed to change for the better when Harry defeated him. Dad acted as if we'd never see things like that in our generation... but here we are." She then sighed as Rose spoke of how life outside of work was pretty drab. "Same here. Just me and the cat if I'm not with my family taking care of Dad. Thing is, I'm not sure what to do for fun anymore. I mainly get my kicks reversing blundered magic."
