March 30, 2025 The weather had begun to warm up, and Felix couldn't say that he minded it. The warmer the weather, the closer to ice cream season it became. The Flower Festival was still a few weeks away, but it was one of the few other opportunities that he had to go beyond the grounds of the castle: a Hogsmeade weekend.
After Vasilia's brilliant move to begin selling ice cream in front of the Three Broomsticks when she could, Felix was hopeful that the ice cream parlor would get good business that spring and summer, too. Even a sudden heatwave was fine by him, so long as it didn't melt their inventory before it could be sold.
With his mind on the new flavors that they could potentially introduce in order to boost business, Felix looked around at the shops in the village for some inspiration. There wasn't much that they hadn't tried before, if he was honest. Maybe a collaboration with a brand or something? He wasn't sure.
In any case, he was pulled from his thoughts by the sight of someone else in the village. Lysander Scamander had been in the year above him, also in Ravenclaw, and it had been a long while since he had heard anything from him. "Hey, Sander," Felix called, walking closer to him. "It's Felix Fortescue." He wasn't sure how good Lysander's vision was anymore, though at least he hadn't really changed much in his appearance since before Lysander had lost his sight.

Working near Hogsmeade was strange; Sander had always thought he would spend his days adventuring, and landing so close to home had never been in the cards. His time in the Americas had taught him a lot, though – including that simply breeding more magical creatures wasn’t the solution to the problem. He had scrapped his idea of a unicorn breeding program in favor of figuring out how to better assist the animals that already existed. He was thrilled when the magical creature reserve had sent him a job offer (and even more thrilled the owl had actually managed to find him). So, while it wasn’t what he expected, it was still good.
Sander also hadn’t accounted for working near Hogsmeade setting him up to interact with his previous classmates, but the moment he heard his name called, Lysander realized that he would be seeing them at least once a month, if he was to be around on weekends.
Felix introduced himself, perhaps a bit unnecessarily – even if Sander’s vision did fail him (and it didn’t, considering the magical prosthetics were quite advanced) his synesthesia didn’t. Felix’s voice was still the same candy-floss color it had been since they had met in the Ravenclaw common room however many years ago. At least Sander wasn’t confused for Lorcan anymore; without the difference of the scarring around the eyes, Sander was the spitting image of his twin now that he had grown his hair out. “Good afternoon, Felix,” Sander greeted. “How are you?” It was a safe bet for a first question.

March 30, 2025 "Good afternoon, Felix,” Lysander greeted him in return. "How are you?"
Things in his life probably could have been better. Considering that his father's health was continually worsening and he wasn't actually sure how much longer he had left to spend with him, that weighed heavily on him at times; he couldn't deny that. He was looking forward to being finished with Hogwarts, too, if only because that put him that much closer to being able to begin his transition in the way that he wanted to. He could start researching things more thoroughly with Vasilia and going to Muggle doctors instead of the Healers at St. Mungo's. It was unknown territory ahead, but it was also a light at the end of a tunnel.
Felix nodded, closing the rest of the distance between him and Lysander. Not that he had ever looked bad, but Lysander's looks now seemed much more like Lorcan's, he realized then. "I'm alright, mate," he nodded. "How've you been? It's been a while."

Felix nodded as he closed the last of the distance between the two of them, saying he was alright. Sander didn’t know exactly what that meant, since alright could range from actually alright to being horrible and not wanting to burden a casual acquaintance with that information. Unluckily for Sander, he didn’t have the tact to probe that further without putting his foot in his mouth, so he was going to leave it well alone. “I’ve been alright. I’ve been away, in the Americas.” Which explained the comment about how it had been a while. “Did you know there was a magical creature rehabilitation center near here? I didn’t.” If he had, maybe Sander would’ve never left in the first place. As it was, he had left, though, and he had learned some things along the way. “Say, has anything awful happened recently?” Again with the lack of tact. Sander hoped he would’ve heard if anything truly earth-shaking had occurred, but it was better to check.

March 30, 2025 "I’ve been alright. I’ve been away, in the Americas," Lysander explained, which certainly made sense as to why they hadn't run into one another before. "Did you know there was a magical creature rehabilitation center near here? I didn’t."
Felix shook his head. He hadn't realized that there was one, but he thought that it was interesting that there was one around. "That's just up your street, isn't it?" he acknowledged with a smile. He knew that Lysander and his family were extremely interested in Magizoology, in the same way that his family was with, well… ice cream.
"Say, has anything awful happened recently?"
Taken aback by the suddenness of Lysander's question, Felix's facial expression grew slightly puzzled. Hadn't the past few years been nothing but a mess of awful things? "Er… Besides the dragons on the loose in the village, the fact that Azkaban's destroyed, the Boggarts everywhere, and a fifth-year's expulsion for nearly killing Kinsey Bainbridge, you mean?" he questioned. Things were completely and utterly normal.

Sander nodded when Felix asked if the rehabilitation center was up his street. “I came back so I could work for them, actually.” It made him feel like he was making a difference in the world. Sander wanted to ask whether or not Felix was intending on following in his family’s footsteps the way Sander was, but making the leap from animals to ice cream wasn’t easy for Lysander.
He quickly forgot about making small talk when Felix listed off everything that had happened recently – including things that were objectively awful. How had he not heard there were dragons in Hogsmeade!? Or that Azkaban was destroyed!? He didn’t really care as much about the Boggarts since he knew how to get rid of them, and attempted murder was practically par for the course before you could graduate Hogwarts, but… Dragons!? Azakaban!? “You see, I didn’t know about any of that.” Sander said, voice oddly calm for someone who had just been told earth-shattering news. “Owls didn’t reach me, and I guess everyone here assumed I already knew.” He paused. “Other than that, though...?”

March 30, 2025 Lysander explained that he had come back to Britain to work for the wildlife rehabilitation center, and Felix nodded. It seemed like a good fit for him, he thought, and he was glad that he had found something that he enjoyed doing.
What was jarring, however, was when Sander told him that he hadn't heard about any of the news that he had just described. Felix blinked. Obviously, he wouldn't have been getting the Daily Prophet in the Americas, but the rest of the magical world had news sources. "Owls didn’t reach me, and I guess everyone here assumed I already knew."
Felix felt sort of apologetic for having reacted as he had. Sander really hadn't known any of it. It sounded as though he had just been forgotten, almost.
"Other than that, though…?"
"Erm," Felix began, clearing his throat. "My dad's health still isn't… you know, great," he said with a slight shrug, "but… it could be worse, I guess?"

Felix seemed to take his question about any more news as a personal request, which Lysander didn’t mind in the slightest. He wasn’t ready to hear that Hogwarts had also exploded or something – even though he knew that hadn’t happened, since students were still there for Hogsmeade weekends, and that wouldn’t have happened without a school to go back to. “I’m, er, sorry to hear that.” For someone who had been in poor health himself for quite some time, Sander was remarkably bad at illness-related sympathy.
“It’s alright to feel bad, even if things could be worse,” Sander said. It sounded like something his mother would say, which generally meant it was good; she was better with people than he was. Sander cleared his throat. “Thank you for telling me, by the way. About… everything.” The personal things, but also the newsworthy events he had missed – both were important.

March 30, 2025 “I’m, er, sorry to hear that.” Lysander offered him an apology that was slightly awkward, though Felix didn’t take offense to it. He knew that it was uncomfortable to talk about, though he had been asked. He’d more or less made peace with it—at least enough so that it didn’t consume him on the daily—but it was still hard having to deal with his father’s illness. Granted, it was even harder on his father, especially.
“It’s alright to feel bad, even if things could be worse,” Lysander then reminded him. That was true, too. Felix couldn’t think of anyone he knew who had made it through the past few years without being affected by something that had happened, and he bobbed his head in what was almost a nod.
“Thank you for telling me, by the way. About… everything.”
“Yeah,” Felix nodded in reply with a little bit more confidence. “Of—Of course, Sander.” He would have found out somehow, anyway; the magical world was a small one, especially with the speed at which news travelled when one wasn’t in some remote location. On a more hopeful note, Felix then decided that maybe it would be better for him to change the subject of their conversation. “So, how were the Americas?” he asked. He did genuinely want to hear about what Lysander had been up to there.

Felix nodded, then nodded again, not quite accepting Sander’s thanks for telling him about the magical going-ons, but not denying it, either. Sander would take what he could get on that front. Felix asked how the Americas were, and for once in his life, Lysander had a quick retort on the tip of his tongue. “American,” he replied with a smile that was as close to a smirk as he ever got – which was not very close to a smirk at all, but it was something different. “I saw a lot of fascinating creatures, but not being able to get mail was… hard.” There were people he had wanted to hear from, and of course cutting off his relationship with Susan had hurt him; he hadn’t wanted to do it, but it had been the only thing that made sense at the time.
“It’s the longest I’ve been away from home, so that was also… different.” Sander had spent his summers abroad, but that was always with his family. This expedition had been mostly solo, which had been freeing, but also lonely, especially with the lack of contact with the outside world. “All in all, I think I’m glad to be back, and so close to the school.” Maybe one day he’d be the Care of Magical Creatures professor for the school – Lysander didn’t quite know, but an uncertain future wasn’t quite so hard to cope with when he was around the people he loved.

March 30, 2025 A smile returned to Felix's face when Lysander informed him that the Americas were American. That was observant, naturally. Weirdly enough, it also made sense somehow. He had never ventured that far, though he had met no shortage of Americans over the months that the Ilvermorny students had been at Hogwarts.
"I saw a lot of fascinating creatures, but not being able to get mail was… hard."
Imagining that it would have been, Felix nodded. He didn't think that he would have been able to do it. Of course, there had been Muggle telephones and computers introduced into Britain, so maybe those would have made it easier. He didn't know, and it seemed like a lot of trial and error. Besides, being completely cut off from his family, especially… Felix wasn't sure if he had it in him to do that, especially not given his family's circumstances at that moment.
"It’s the longest I’ve been away from home, so that was also… different," Sander added. "All in all, I think I’m glad to be back, and so close to the school."
"I've never been that far from home, either," Felix admitted. Maybe someday, he thought, he'd do it. "But we're happy to have you back, and I know your family must be." It had to have been hard for them, too, not being able to reach him. "Was there anything dangerous?"

Felix said he also hadn’t been far from home for that long, and Sander nodded. He would suggest everyone try it at least once in their life, if only to boost their confidence in their ability to live independently, but it had still been almost mind-boggling scary. “Family and friends, yes.” He nodded. His parents had expected him to go running off at the earliest opportunity, so they hadn’t missed him as much as other people had, Lysander thought. Knowing what he knew now about recent events, their repeated comments about being glad of his safety made much more sense.
“Everything’s dangerous without the right knowledge,” Sander answered. His perception of what was dangerous was more than a little skewed; he had been introduced to magizoology at a young age and thus he had been handling more difficult animals for longer than most his age. He also was intelligent enough to know when the best thing to do was to escape, rather than potentially anger an animal to the point of injury. “You’re going to have to be a bit more specific.”

March 30, 2025 Reminding him that any creature could be considered dangerous if one lacked the knowledge of it, Sander told him that he was going to have to be more specific.
Felix laughed. Lysander wasn't wrong about that. Even with something as harmless as a Pygmy Puff, any creature needed to be handled by someone who knew what they were doing with it. What he had meant, though, was if Lysander had encountered anything that—to the average magical person—would have been more dangerous than not.
As such, he revised his question for Lysander. "Dangerous," he explained, "as in the creatures that the Ministry would classify as quadruple-X or quintuple-X, I mean?"

Felix narrowed down his classification of what he considered dangerous, and Sander was able to give a more concise answer after that. “Oh, several.” If he seemed unbothered by the fact, it was because he didn’t see anything to be bothered by – he had never feared for his life in any real capacity, and if he had, he was a capable enough wizard to Apparate away without much fuss.
“I saw a Re’em when I was in Canada, visiting my birthplace,” Lysander had been born on the Canadian tundra, something not many people seemed to know or remember about him, “and a Wampus when I was in Maryland. I didn’t stay around the Wampus for long, though – I think she might’ve been pregnant, so she wasn’t in the mood for visitors.” The Re’em had been easier to observe, and was only a four-X rather than a five. “They’re not so bad as long as you’re polite about it, really.” That had been paramount in his parents’ magizoology instruction – animals deserved respect too, and being polite to them could only ever turn out well.

March 30, 2025 Once he clarified what, to him, was “dangerous”, Lysander seemed to have a better frame of reference. “Oh, several,” he said, though it was probably more typical for him to encounter such creatures in his line of work. Unless more dragons got loose and somehow made their way to Diagon Alley, Felix knew that he wouldn’t have similar adventures in ice cream-making once he finished school.
“I saw a Re’em when I was in Canada, visiting my birthplace,” Lysander noted, and Felix didn’t know if he was more shocked about Sander’s having seen a Re’em or the fact that Sander had been born all the way in Canada. Still, he nodded—fascinated by it but trying to seem as nonchalant about it as he could. It was all so normal to Lysander. “And a Wampus when I was in Maryland. I didn’t stay around the Wampus for long, though – I think she might’ve been pregnant, so she wasn’t in the mood for visitors.”
Again, Felix nodded. The most that he had heard about Wampuses was because of the Ilvermorny House of the same name.
“They’re not so bad as long as you’re polite about it, really,” Sander added.
Felix guessed that that was probably true, too. He had never had any reason to interact with anything that wasn’t commonly found in Britain or Ireland, on the whole. He assumed, though, that courtesy also mattered when dealing with creatures—just as much as it did with people. “Aren’t Re’ems incredibly rare?” he asked, wondering how Lysander had had the fortune of encountering one.
