Simon hated school more than ever these days. The end of the school year couldn't come soon enough. The Lion couldn't get his shit together when it came to academics; sixth year was hard, the work was only getting more complicated as the year came closer to an end. All Simon wanted to do when it came to school was play quidditch, that was as far as his school spirit went. He only enjoyed playing quidditch because he was a adrenaline junkie, and it was one of the only times it was socially acceptable to hit people.
Since Simon was performing unsatisfactory in all of his classes, except Art, his academic counselor scheduled him for after school tutoring. The Gryffindor wasn't enthused by his freedom being stolen from him but he was threatened to have quidditch taken away again if he fell into academic probation. A common problem he was used to dancing around, this time they were serious.
The lanky teen made his way to the back of the Library where study sessions normally took place at the long tables. This time he wasn't late, which was a miracle in itself. Simon threw himself into a chair and sank into it, lulling his head back to stare at the ceiling lazily as he awaited for his tutor to show up.

Jessie’s little feet couldn’t carry her fast enough. She was late to meet the student she was going to be tutoring. Her heavy bag on her shoulder only slowed her down. It was absolutely packed full today. Flash cards, extra resource books... She was bound and determined to help this student in need. When the little lioness was asked to be a tutor, her immediate response was an overwhelming yes. Helping anyone and everyone was something she prided herself on, and this was one of the simpler ways to do it. Sometimes people just need a little push, or someone to just simply talk to. She was all too glad to offer that kind of support to just about anyone. Not to mention she was excited to make another friend. When she had finally made it to the library, Jessie was out of breath. She wasn’t exactly in shape anymore, it seemed. Her dark brown eyes carefully looked around the entrance of the library. Hmm. Maybe they were in the back? She quickly made her way to the rear of the room, her eyes finally resting on the back of someone who looked familiar. She couldn’t quite place who it was though. A warm smile lit up her face, as she approached the individual. “Hi! I think I’m yo—“ she stopped, her smile instantly dropping off of her lips. “You have to be joking.”
Her eyes finally recognized the boy in front of her. It was Simon. Just her luck. A horrified look overcame her face, as she stared at him. She couldn’t believe this was happening. Again. simon sixten svendsen

Simon hadn't noticed his tutor was pushing it close on time. He probably would have cared if he had noticed, but alas, he was too concentrated counting the tiles in the ceiling. Once he heard a familiar voice greet him, his ears perked up, shooting his neck backwards to be faced with none other than Jessie Meadows. Immediately, his jaw clenched and his stomach dropped to the floor.
"Oh, for f**** sake." he grumbled, pulling in a deep breath while pushing himself to sit up from his previous relaxed position. Simons icy blue saucers fell on Jessie, the horrified look on her face was a great indicator that she didn't know who she agreed to tutor. He was at loss for words, all he could do was shake his head from side to side and scoff, "I'm being punished..." he declared to the universe, not feeling a need to hide his frustration. Havings Jessie as a tutor was signing up to be a slave to his books and work, he wasn't ready for that kind of commitment.

She sat there for a moment, still processing her recent realization. Before she knew it, she was practically seeing red. Jessie scoffed, as if he hadn't orchestrated this whole thing. She slammed her bag onto the table, a stormy expression replacing her horrified look. "Cut the shit, Simon. Is this another one of your jokes?" Jessie's voice was a quiet, but fierce. If she wasn't in the library, she was sure she would be yelling at him. She respected the librarian, and didn't particularly want to get chastised for a raised voice, despite how angry she was. She might have already crossed the line by slamming her book bag down. If only she could throw a book a him. She crossed her arms, deciding it was better to keep her arms close to her. Otherwise she might be inclined to actually throw a book or something towards him. "I don't have time for anymore of your games. I'm sure it's pretty boring now that you don't have the chance to pick on me, with the potions project being done and all. So, find someone else to make fun of. I'm not going to be the butt end of a joke," she declared, chest swelling in an attempt to look intimidating. She wasn't sure it would work. There's only so much you can do to look scary, when you're 5'1. simon sixten svendsen

Simons expression twisted into a guilty look when she accused him of playing another one of his games on her, his eye brows raised upwards in defense. The Lion laughed only because he felt guilty now. His head shook back and forth with a snort, raising his hands out of innocence, “C’mon... you really think I would be capable of pulling this one off?” he asked her with a knowing look, trying to appear innocent. That would require commitment..” he told her with a chuckle, knowing they both knew he wasn’t capable of being committed to anything other than slacking off.
The look on Jessie’s face was fierce. She was so easily agitated by his presence, he could feel her anger radiating from her petite frame. Simon should have been afraid of her throwing something at him again, but he had the librarian there to protect him this time. The Lionness expressed her displeasure of being paired up with him, stating that he was wasting her time and it had to be a joke. His head cocked to the side to send her a ‘oh really’ expression, furrowing his eyebrows at the center of his forehead. What Jessie didn’t know was accepting help from a tutor required bruising the Lions pride and made him feel stupid. Jessie wasn’t making him feel any better about himself - not that he expected her to.
Simon was growing agitated by the fact that she thought he would waste his free time on her because he surely wouldn’t. He hadn’t thought about her since the project finished... Simon took a breath in, rolling his eyes to the back of his skull, ”I don’t know about you, but I have actual friends, and plenty of other things to do than force you to hang out with me...so you could forget that little fantasy.” he told her harshly, hoping it would strike a nerve.

Jessie rolled her eyes so hard, she thought they might get stuck up there. His words didn't hold much meaning to her. She still didn't think he was being completely honest. Though, he was right. She knew as well as he did that he didn't put much effort into anything. Unless it was quidditch. It didn't make her feel better though. She was stuck tutoring him now. A small sigh slipped past her lips, as Simon began talking again. As words fell out of his mouth, she began to be less and less inclined to stay his tutor. Extra credit be damned. " A fantasy? Screw you Simon." Jessie turned away from him, face turning red. She pinched her lips between her fingers, sighing unhappily. If she hadn't already promised to tutor someone, she would have fled from the library many moments ago. Twirling back to him, she placed her hands on the back of a chair. "Listen, do you want my help or not? We both know I can help you pass. But I'm not gonna sit here and be endlessly tormented by you every single time we have to meet. Think you can manage to be nice to a few minutes at a time?"

PG 13: LanguageSimon couldn't believe this was happening. The universe was pushing them together once more. Maybe it was karma coming back at him for something shitty he had done in the past? Whatever was going on, he didn't approve of it, but the fact that Jessie had to put up with him was hilariously satisfying for him. Simon knew he was harsh with his words toward the Lioness; it wasn't his first instinct to be nasty to someone. The half vampire would much rather be friends with someone - not that he had any faith in them being besties...
Jessie told him to screw himself and a smug smile slowly spread across his face. Raising his eye brows at her due to the irony and word play. However, when Jessie made it sound like Simon was the only one being a jerk, his head cocked to the side to look at her with a questionable expression. She was great at playing "Miss Innocent". Simon attempted to keep a more relaxed tone, truly not trying to upset her, "This is a two way street." he told her, narrowing his icy blue saucers at her, "I wasn't the only one being a dick here." Simon defended himself, but he did sort of agree with her that she could probably help him. What confused him the most was why she'd want to help him anyways.
Clenching his jaw, a breath pulled through his nostrils and he exhaled to buy him a second. Simon wasn't one to break down and agree so easily, especially when it came to school, but he was getting pretty desperate now. "But, uh - yeah, uh, I guess I could use your help." he agreed awkwardly, not knowing how to act now if he couldn't be sassy or snarky. Simon couldn't hold in the suspicion any longer, "What's in it for you?" he asked her with a shrug, not understanding why she'd waste her time with him when they could barely stand each other.

When Simon agreed to be civil, she let out a breath. One she didn't realize she had been holding. Jessie felt a little more settled after hearing his words. This whole tutoring thing may not be fun, but at least it would be bearable. Simon cared deeply about keeping his spot on the quidditch team, clearly. She was banking on the hope that he would keep it nice because of his love for the sport. She plopped herself in the seat she had been clinging onto, running a shaky hand through her hair. She was about to dig through her bag for some index cards when his question caught her off guard. She shrugged, meeting his icy blue eyes. "Honest? Extra credit. Otherwise I would have high-tailed it out of here as soon as I saw your nappy hair," she explained, nonchalant. Though she couldn't resist insulting his messy hair. She let that sit with him for a moment, before cutting right to the chase. "So, I wasn't told which specific subjects you need help in. I have some stuff to get started today, but I'll be better prepared with more material next time."

PG 13: LanguageJessie met his eyes with hers and it was the first time Simon noticed the pleasant caramel brown color of her eyes; complimented with warm with golden flakes and surrounded in thick lashes. The sentiment following regarding his 'nappy hair' was a good contrast to the moment. His head cocked to the side with a smirk and he refrained from snapping her a sassy Z Formation, "Hey. Now that wasn't very nice, Jessie." he snipped in a playfully mocking tone, not really taking offense to the statement. Simon was aware his hair was messy, his sister reminded him almost every day.
When she shared that it was extra credit keeping her there, he snorted because he should have known, ”Two words every nerd can’t resist.” Simon told her, not intending to offend her. This was friendly banter for Simon Svendsen. The half vampire was trying, the relaxed expression and body language was a good indicator. Simon twiddled his thumbs and looked up at the ceiling when she stated she wasn’t sure what he needed help with, honestly he needed assistance with just about everything academically, but he wasn’t going to admit that to Jessie. She probably thought that he was a bloody idiot already, especially having to deal with him again after their assignment straight from Hell. His icy blue saucers found hers again before falling to his books, ”Transfiguration and Potions...” Simon bit down on his lip, ”And, uh, Herbology...” he told her, feeling the pride draining from him. Simon didn’t want to accept the help almost as much as he didn’t want to lose his spot on the team again.

His eyes felt heavy on hers. Jessie tore her gaze away from his own, a weird sensation flipping around her stomach. When he mentioned how her words weren't exactly nice, she poked her tongue out at him. She supposed it wouldn't kill her to be civil as well. Though she did flip Simon off when her called her a nerd. She couldn't help actually liking school. She continued listening to him name off the classes he need help him. Her doe brown eyes watched him once again, eyes slowly gathering together. He looked almost wounded as he listed them. For the first time, she could sense a small bit of vulnerability. A joke about how she could have guessed he needed help in Potions was ready to roll off her tongue. Her empathetic nature stopped her, however, sensing that teasing him might ruin the tiny bit of civility building between them. A rush of guilt quickly washed over her. Without the constant bout of rage she experianced while near him, she began wondering if her words about his incompetence in their project had actually hurt him somehow. The little lioness was chagrined to know that in the moment she had not cared. Biting her lip, she tried to push the hurtful thoughts away. "Right, well. I can help with pretty much all of those classes," she said, sinking into her seat and crossing her arms. Perhaps she could make him feel a bit more comfortable if she didn't launch right into their studies. "So, erm... Ho-How was your week?" she mumbled, flushing pink. Merlin, this was off to a rough start. simon sixten svendsen

PG 13: LanguageSimon could feel the vibe of the conversation shifting. They were both trying to be civil. This was going to take more energy than he wished, but if it meant he could get some help and they wouldn't be at each others throats, maybe it could benefit the both of them. Simon was willing to try if Jessie was willing to. Hopefully she wouldn't be a complete buzzkill all the time. When she flipped him the bird he chuckled with a smile, not taking any offense to it because he properly earned that one.
As the expression on her face softened, Simon found himself attempting to unclench his jaw, mentally feigning a relaxed posture in his chair. The tension in his shoulders dropped when Jessie mentioned that she could help him. "Yeah?" his eye brows raised, more out of surprise that she was agreeing to it so easily. "Uh, yeah, er, thanks--that would be great." he agreed lamely, mentally face palming at how weird this was. She must have really wanted that extra credit.
Jessie followed by asking how his week was going and he froze, this kindness was throwing him completely off guard. "Same ol', same ol'.." he shrugged nonchalantly, knowing that she didn't know what his 'same old BS' would be because they barely knew each other. Simon cleared his throat, attempting to be more friendly, "A third year lost control of 'The Monster Book of Monsters' in the common room again today, so that has made for an interesting afternoon.." he shared lightly, trying not to be awkward. He raised his hand to ruffle his hair to gain him a second. "My academic counselor told me this week if I don't follow through with the tutoring I'll be removed from the team again, so, eh, I've been okay, considering." he told her honestly, lifting his shoulders upwards to appear unphased, but he was pretty bummed about it. Simon didn't want Jessie to dangle that over his head though since he had extended his options now. His icy blue eyes shot back over to her, feeling like he had shared too much. That had to of been the most words he had spoken to her without saying something snarky. "How about you?" Simon followed, sending her a curious look.

She nodded in acknowledgment of his gratitude, still getting used to their newfound civility. Her lips formed a small smile, thinking back to her first time attempting to open her Care of Magical Creatures text. They really should provide instructions on how to open it. Jessie was about to say just that, but he continued talking. She was a little taken aback by his openness, as he talked about the conversation he and his counselor had. She eyed him carefully, as he shrugged with indifference. Though, she knew better than to believe that. It mattered to him a lot more than he was willing to admit. In a matter of moments, their demeanor towards each other had shifted entirely. If she had known all it would take was a simple agreement to be kind, it might've been this way from the start. Her eyes were still trained on him when he flipped the conversation back towards her, its suddenness catching her off guard. "Oh, not a lot," she began, tucking more hair behind her ear. "Just trying to figure out my plans for the summer. Not too keen on going back to the States." If he was opening up towards her, she might as well return the favor. Her situation with her family wasn't exactly a secret, though not a lot of people knew. Her bubbly attitude tended to take the spotlight. "Other than that, I've been looking into getting a pet."

This was getting weird. Simon wasn’t used to participating in a civil conversation with Jessie Meadows. He could feel the awkwardness slowly sinking in, which he was desperately trying to push aside. This was his intuition telling him something odd was going on. Never in a million years did he think Jessie would confide in him. Even about something as simple deciding on a pet or family woes. Maybe he was dreaming...
As the Lioness mentioned not being thrilled about going home for break, he was going to ask her ‘Why?’, but she then mentioned something about possibly wanting a pet. Interesting.
“Pets are cool.” He commented more to be polite before flipping the conversation back. Resting his chin in his hand lazily, he turned his attention to her, “Why don’t you want to go home?” He asked, not realizing how weighted of a question that could be for some people. Especially since he was lucky that he didn’t deal with any family drama. Simon had his fraternal twin sister who was a pest, but they got along better than most siblings because they stayed clear of each other most of the time. But believe if anyone were to harm her, he would beat them to a bloody pulp like any brother should.

Jessie half-smiled at him. His intrigue into her personal life surprised her, slightly. Her thoughts drifted back to the night they had fallen asleep in the common room. Their conversation had been easy and personal then. Today, however, it could just be for the sake of being kind. She placed her arms on the table in front of her, before crossing and leaning on them. "Well, remember how I said I was muggleborn?" she asked, pausing briefly to let him answer. "My parents are fine with it, sometimes proud." A broader smile graced her lips at the memory of her parents' reaction when she received her letter. "My sisters though, all three of them... They don't approve." Though she tried to keep her tone light, her smile faltered when she spoke the last sentence. Truthfully, it had been years since she had any actual contact with her sisters. In the last three years Jessie had avoided going home at all costs. Only agreeing to come back to Georgia if she knew her sisters weren't going to be there. She hadn't realized she had let the conversation drop off so steeply. "But I'm sure something will come up," she recovered, cheeks tinging the constant state of pink they seemed to be when around him. "As for the pet, I think I want a cat."simon sixten svendsen

Simon nodded at Jessie when she asked him if he remembered their conversation about her being a Muggleborn. Honestly he hadn’t thought much of that fact because blood purity wasn’t something he was particularly concerned about. She shared that her sisters didn't 'approve' of her gift. As a half vampire, he was used to discrimination by those who couldn’t accept a being who was simply ‘different’. Simon learned from a young age not to care what people thought of him, at times he didn’t realize how much he dissociated himself from people due to being simply jaded by the world at sixteen.
As Jessie spoke about her family, he could sense some discomfort. Simon almost felt bad for her, finding it hard to keep his expression from falling. Why did he suddenly feel the need to offer her reassurance? Simon cocked his head to the side with a knowing chuckle, "That sounds like jealousy to me.." he told her with a solid nod, sure of it. Simon kicked back in his chair, front legs flying into the air, "Tell 'em to kiss your magical arse..." he laughed, not at her, but her sisters' stupidity.
When she said 'something would come up'. He didn't really understand. Maybe because he didn't face any family problems of his own, besides his stupid sister, but from what he was told that was considered normal. "What do you mean by 'something will come up'?" he questioned her further, more conversationally. Simon wasn't trying to get information out of her anything, he was genuinely curious. Maybe if continued to be civil and make an effort to get to know her, their study sessions wouldn't end with them wanting to kill each other every time. Jessie mentioned a prospect cat, but family drama was more interesting.
