▲ June 10th, 2025 Content Warning: drugs Her dealer had barely believed her story about being away at boarding school for the last nine months. He thought she had been caught and gotten tossed in some juvenile facility, and had every right to be hesitant about selling to her. There really hadn’t been an established relationship between them prior to last summer, but he was the closest person to the orphanage that she knew of, and apparently ran in the same circles as some of Nate’s off-color muggle friends. The ones he stole the car with, or whatever that ordeal was. Nessa had planned on going the summer without wasting any more of her money, which was minimal at best, but after being back for only a few days and having to deal with all the Ilvermorny students, she was done with it all. Having grabbed everything she needed during the afternoon, all that was left was grabbing Nate and sneaking out of the building – easy enough to do at one in the morning, and something they had done loads of times over the years. The American girl they had decided to stuff into her room with her was fast asleep as Nessa scooped up her new acquisition, and she tiptoed down to the first floor and out the kitchen door in the back. The one that was always well-oiled and never squeaky. Until tonight, for whatever reason. She didn’t care if she was caught now, but coming back in a few hours later high as a kite certainly wouldn’t fly with the caretakers. They were all a bunch of stiffs that had more on their plates than they could handle right now. Luckily her jail break went as planned and she hustled into the woods off the edge of the yard, and made her way towards the usual spot. She hadn’t seen Nate since dinner, so there was no telling if he had been out there since then, or if he was dragging his feet. Plopping down on one of the logs they had placed there years ago, she lit her wand and stuck it in her mouth as she started to meticulously roll a few joints. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

SNEAKING OUT OF THE ORPHANAGE WAS EASIER than sneaking back in, but Nate found an easy thrill in both. He often stayed out of the orphanage for as long as possible without raising suspicion. He found the entire place stifling, like there was no air, and that was before it was filled to bursting with whiny, snivelling refugees, hiding from a plague in the easiest place to catch it. So, he stayed were it was statistically safer - with muggles.
His traitor friends welcomed Nate back sheepishly, and he told a grand story about how he'd been holed up in a secure unit for stealing the car - beat explaining 'boarding school'. To them, he was an instant hero, they gave him a bottle of vodka they'd stolen and Nate got to punch one of them in the stomach, all was forgiven. But, Nate had to return eventually. At the very least, he knew what awaited him as the stolen watch on his wrist read a quarter after one in the morning.
The woodland path was a little disorientating to anybody unfamiliar, but Nate knew it like the back of his hand. He crept up on Nessa like a phantom, both hands landing on her shoulders as he hissed in a tone eerily similar to their ward. "Is that any way to behave, Byrne?!"
Loose limbed and a little tipsy, Nate levered off Nessa's shoulders and landed on the log beside her. "You smoking without me?" He asked, his bottom lip pouting out for a second before he extracted his hands from his pockets and reached over to steal it right from her mouth. "You look happy to see me," He quirked his brows to the wand she still held in her hand, the end smoking gently. "Put your wand away, this is a magic-free zone." Which wasn't entirely true, the entire little wood was charmed to keep muggles out. Nate thought his friends suspected he slept there.

▲ She was out of practice when it came to rolling blunts, the same way she had almost coughed up a lung the other day on the train when she snagged Nate’s cigarette and tried to take a big girl puff from it. It didn’t help that attempting this feat of accurately rolling paper around weed was being done in the pitch dark, only a small hue of blue light coming from her wand tip. After about fifteen minutes though, they were finished, albeit in a slightly haphazard way. This was why she let Nate do the illegal shit. He had a knack for it, while she was better at breaking into places they needed to go. Regardless of they were rolled, they would still get high from it. That was, if they could find them on the ground after she dropped them when a pair of hands came down on her shoulders from behind her, only her wand managing to stay where it was. “Fuck you,” she hissed out when she recognized the voice as Nate’s. Of course he was going to do that – she should’ve known better. Using her wand, she located her precious joints on the ground and placed one in her mouth and the other in her pocket. He wasn’t going to get one until he asked nicely now. “I was thinking about sharing but-hey!” she switched gears as he took the one out of her mouth. “I’ll blast it out of your mouth if you don’t give it back.” It was a never ending battle with him sometimes, and extinguishing the light from her wand was her only sign of submission for the night. The clearing they were in had been picked and adapted over the years to make sure they weren’t caught doing whatever it was they were doing out there at night, and had a few paths back to their dorm building and one to the outside world. Nate had clearly come from the latter, and she could smell it on him. “I’ll trade you if you have any left,” she said, willing to compromise if he had alcohol on him. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

THERE WAS AN EASE TO NATE WHEN HE WAS drunk that simply did not exist when he was sober. So, when she threatened him, he didn't offer a threat in return - which would have been quite characteristic. Instead, he laughed. "You're of age, yeah?" Quirking his brows as if daring her to do just as she'd said she would, her joint hanging out of one side of his upturned mouth. "Know how much you love playing by the rules."
But, of course, Nessa was a bloodhound for the booze. She caught his lax, leaning posture, and the glassy smile on his face and bargained in turn. Nate shook his head at first, shrugging his shoulders. Thankfully, the rules of their little hidden spot was - never come with company, and never come empty handed. So, after letting her suffer for a few minutes, Nate unzipped his trackie hoodie and pulled out a half litre of vodka, the gift that kept on giving. "Go easy," He warned her. "It's the cheap stuff." Plus, they still had to walk back and sneak in to their rooms, which were decidedly fuller than they used to be.
"Your joints like a sleeping bag, by the way." Nate criticised, half laughing on a smoky exhale, the paper burning all the way down one side. "Who taught you to roll like that?" And he snorted, teeth between his teeth as he took another draw with a shrug, because in actuality, he had taught her. She just wasn't as good as he was, as well practised.

▲ She hated Nate when he did this. Taunting her with her rule following, whatever that meant. He knew that was all for show when they were in places where they could seriously get in trouble and have consequences. But that was how he was and one of them had to be the brains of the operation or else they’d quickly drag each other down, wherever down was. She had an idea, which was being homeless and on the streets, but that wasn’t for at least another two years. If Nessa could have it her way, that wouldn’t be happening at all, even if it meant shacking up with someone until she could strike out on her own. Most likely that would mean Nate, since he had a year head start on her. “Rules don’t matter out here. Remember?” she reminded him. They had a sort of creed to the clearing, and the first rule was that there were no rules. Exactly the sort of thing a couple of deranged and lonely children would come up with and follow vehemently into their adulthood. No wonder they were so messed up. Nate eventually produced the bottle he was hiding, but with a warning that she completely ignored. “Cheaper is better,” she commented as she popped the stopper on it and took a quick sniff of it. Vodka that could double as nail polish remover. Perfect. “Bottoms up.” A decent swig later had her twisting her face up as she forced the vile liquid down her throat. In a few minutes she would be feeling that big time. First came the warm burn of it running through her body. “You did,” she responded to his question on the joint’s thickness. “But you never let me have a go at it, so that’s what you get.” He knew that though, and was just trying to knock her down a peg or two for some jab she had probably made at him earlier in the day. “Here,” she handed the bottle back to him and quickly plucking the joint from him and taking her own drag on it. “You go to see your gang this afternoon? They noticed you weren’t at dinner and I had to cover for you again. Not sure how they have the time to worry about us when they have to put a show on for their new inmates.” MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

"I REMEMBER." Nate said with a roll of his eyes, but it was true. Few things mattered out in this little seared patch of matted grass and weeds. They'd found it one long, boring summer and it had become their unofficial clubhouse. Nate wouldn't call it something so childish, but it was an escape, and that was what really mattered.
He watched her snatch the booze instead of pushing, the top forgotten as she took a dangerous swig. Nate felt it burn as her face screwed, it was like lighter fluid, but it did the job. "And easier to steal." Nate commented, trading off the blunt for the neck of the booze. He didn't need any more, but fair was fair and if he wasn't smoking he better have something in his hands. Anything to stop them having to head back to the vile little building.
"Why mess with perfection," Nate shrugged with a little smirk. Nessa need not try as long as he was there to roll, but he hadn't been. In fact, ever since they'd arrived back at Pupillus he had been more absent than present. He knew in a way he was leaving her behind, but his muggle 'friends' would eat her alive. She was pretty, blonde and deceptively innocent in appearance. He didn't want beef with them, they were his lifeline during the summer.
"It's not a fucking gang, man." Nate grumbled, picking at the paper label on the bottle. He'd met muggle 'gang' members before, and he knew to keep his distance. These were the kid brothers and sons of gang members. There was a difference, and it was shaped like a prison sentence. "Thanks," He said after a beat, rubbing the back of his neck because he knew what it cost Nessa to cover for him. "I owe you one." And then he slumped down on the log, his face screwing up angrily.
"I can't stand the idiot they've roomed me with, though." And he felt the anger bubble in his throat like bile, taking another swig from the bottle to gather himself. "I just wanna punch his stupid face in," He turned his head to Nessa and scowled. "He's brainless." And it was almost fact already that Nate would get in to a scuff with whoever was unfortunate enough to share a room with him. It had happened to every other sad little orphan they'd tried to fob him off on. He wasn't looking for a buddy to sleep better. "Why can't we just room together." Nate muttered, shrugging his shoulders as if it was that simple. But he knew it wasn't.

▲ Nessa was almost positive that Nate didn’t even know how to purchase something properly. Everything with him was always steal this, pilfer that. She didn’t even bother to ask him how he acquired anything anymore, because she knew the answer was that he had appropriated in some manner that wasn’t legal. Her only attempt at stealing had gotten her caught, and she managed to play it off like she was an air-headed bimbo. Her choice of loot had been a candy bar, so it wasn’t going to be the end of the world even if the storeowner hadn’t believed her. Now, cracking a lock to let Nate in to take something? That was completely different. So maybe under those circumstances she was a thief. But her hands never touched the goods until her partner in crime had them first. That was the deal they had come up with. “If you had been here on time, you would’ve had the honors,” she chided as she took a long inhale on her handiwork. Nate was right: it was shoddy craftsmanship and barely passable. Except its faultiness wasn’t going to keep them from smoking it, that much she was sure of. “Right. Boys Club. My bad for getting the two confused. Where they pretend to be hardened by the streets but they’re just a bunch of whiny, misunderstood momma’s boys.” She exhaled, not feeling any of it, deciding to have another go at it. “You could be their leader if you really wanted to. Teach them a few things, like how to treat girls.” Not woman, girls. The ones that hung around Nate’s muggle friends were exactly the same and a whole lot pettier and terrible. Nessa only needed to see the group once to know that they weren’t her kind of people, even if she checked off all the same boxes. Nate switched gears and started to go on about his roommate, practically echoing what she thought of her new ‘friend’ that had taken up her space. She let out a dry laugh as he said he wanted to pulverize the boy, and having talked to the kid a few times since his arrival, she agreed with Nate on that. “Because they’re afraid I’ll tempt you with my feminine wiles, love,” Nessa crooned up at him, running her hand down his arm for show. “And they’d never hear the end of it from the American parents if they found out.” Admittedly, she had thought the exact same thing when they were first notified by about their new roommates. If they had been siblings, it wouldn’t have been an issue in the slightest. After all these years, they were basically that anyways. “Plus I’ve heard you snore a lot. I’d have shot that down immediately. Need my beauty sleep after all.”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

NATE WAS TOO BUZZED TO BE BOTHERED THAT he had indeed been late. Usually, this would have plagued him, he was annoyingly prompt to everything. Even his planned thefts. But, the booze had made him a little more relaxed, laughing as he wobbled backwards. "That's gonna hurt tomorrow," He muttered, his grin a little dopey as he looked at her. Though, he wasn't buzzed enough not to feel his face slacken at her teasing.
"Shut it." He snapped, a lame but apt insult. She'd better or they'd end up arguing, and there was no arguing allowed in their den. Leaning forward, he dug the toe of his shoe in the ground. She was right, they were posers and Nate knew that. They had money, and they'd leave him in a heartbeat if it meant saving themselves. But, he couldn't let that one thing go. It was addictive, the escape of it all. "You do it," He mumbled, feeling melancholic all of a sudden. "I don't wanna be the leader of the weakest fucking pack in London." He snorted, pulling a hand from his pocket to swipe under his ice cold nose.
"What feminine wiles?" Nate asked, his lip quirking again, eyes still glassy as he stared at her expectantly. "Thought you were one of the guys." Nessa had always been a little rougher than the other inmates at the orphanage, it's why they got along so well. She could take a hit. "We should just do it," Nate said, his face straightening. "Tell them we'll leave if they don't let us." This was weak, and a little childish, but Nate was serious. "I can't stay there with that guy." Admittedly, Nate would be gone next year, but that was far too long to keep suffering.

▲ Nessa shrugged as he warned her about the next morning, not really caring what he had to say when he was already this deep into his drinking. She wasn’t going to be the one hurling in the toilet at quarter to six in the morning, waking up the entire floor in the process. That honor was saved for Nate and she wouldn’t be taken down with when they put two and two together. “It’ll make looking at your face easier though,” she sent back at him. A childish retort, but that was all her brain could put together as the different inhibitors started to take over. “So what does that make you right now then?” Nessa pointed out. If he wasn’t the leader and simply a follower, didn’t that make him one of those ‘weak’ lads he was always bumping around with? They certainly weren’t hardened criminals and never would be without outside influence, and yet Nate still felt like indulging himself with their presence and playing make believe with them. She rolled her eyes at him, which were surely masked by the darkness that enveloped their hideout. “And you know I’m not a leader. Why the hell would I want to run with punks like that…” She took another long hit on the blunt before holding it back out for Nate to take. He was the only exception to that statement, obviously. She didn’t need a crew surrounding her to get things done. Just herself and Nate. It was easier that way. Sure, she could be ‘one of the guys’ if push came to shove, but that meant being like everyone else. Like his punk muggle friends. She had already stated her reasoning for not wanting to be one of them, sort of, but she also understood what Nate meant by it. Rolling with the punches and throwing her own if necessary was obviously something she was capable of. “Running away would just be easier, you know,” she sniffed. The cool nighttime air was finally starting to set in, making her pull her legs closer to her body. “Or literally anything that can get us out of this place for the rest of the summer.”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

LIFTING HIS BROWS DRAMATICALLY, NATE DREW a smirk like he didn't believe her. His face wasn't so bad, he'd always known that, but Nessa had never been the type to let Nate get too complacent. But, she was still sober and he was not. He already felt like he had the upper hand, even if he didn't. Pulling a hair that had stuck to his dry, chapped bottom lip, Nate tried to think about Nessa's claim. He'd think about it more when he was sober but only one reply came to mind and he snorted at it.
"Whatever the fuck I want." He shook his head and teetered backwards dangerously. And he watched her take a long hit from the spliff, the lower half of her face illuminated slightly by the bright orange tip as it singed angrily. Her words were hoarse with smoke, but Nate knew what she was saying and he grabbed the spliff back a little roughly, clumsily. "I dunno, Ness." He spat, taking a hit from the corner of his mouth as he shook his head and let it dangle between his parted knees. "You seem kinda jealous the way you ride my arse about having other mates." He said this to wound her, because he knew how it felt to be alone in a place like this.
It wasn't long, however, before they were both on the more pressing topic of their sleeping arrangements. Nate had often thought about running away, more than he'd like to admit to anybody, but on that particular day he seriously considered it once again. After a long beat, he shook his head and kissed his teeth noisily. "You wanna be a loser our whole life, Ness?" He asked her coldly, leaning all of his weight forward and on to his knees as he braced his forearms on his thighs. "I don't." He scoffed in to the cold, thinking about his iron-tight academic plan. It did not include running away. "But, hey, if you have any better ideas I'm all ears." He screwed his face and handed her the last draw of the joint as if it were a talking piece.

▲ That was such a non-answer, if she had ever heard one before. Basically he was telling her that he had no idea what the hell he was doing with his rag-tag gang of groupies, expect fucking around and causing trouble. She knew better than to really grill him for some of the things they did because that would make her a hypocrite. At the same time, she didn’t see anything wrong with trying to keep him in check and away from the group’s more obscene antics. Nate had enough self-respect left that, in her opinion, he could step away from those sorts of things if he wanted to. But she didn’t know what the limit was for him anymore. Hers was apparently breaking into abandoned buildings and buying weed from the sketchy dealer on the corner. “I am jealous,” she admitted, begrudgingly. “Don’t think that means I want to be friends with the fucking children at Hogwarts though.” Just thinking about going back to school pissed her off even more. The silver lining was that the castle was better than the orphanage. Right now though, they weren’t all that different from one another. All the extra bodies pressed together in the dining room and bathrooms made it seriously overcrowded. Nessa liked her space to herself, and that was being severely impeded on right now. Nate asked if she wanted to be a loser for the rest of her life, and she shook her head. No one wanted to be that. But it was also easier to be one when you literally had nothing. The American guests didn’t get that, and most of the Hogwarts students didn’t either. They left her alone though since they knew. Her current roommate certainly didn’t, and she had spent the first few nights yapping about how she missed her dog, which she affectionately called Moo for some goddamn reason. “There is one thing…” she muttered, reaching into her back pocket to pull out the two remaining fliers that Jameson Blishwick had dropped off the previous week. Nessa had destroyed the rest of the pile, which she was sure exactly what the Blishwick girl wanted her to do, but kept the last two for herself and Nate. Nobody ever said Gryffindors were smart, and Jimmie Blishwick certainly wasn’t one of their brightest. “Tell me what you think about this,” she said as she pushed one of the fliers in front of Nate’s face. “I didn’t want to show you in front of anyone else, but it looks like it’s a way out for a little bit.” The workers didn’t need to know about it either. All they had to do was stealthily submit the applications (as the only ones doing so) and they were sure to get this ‘internship opportunity’, whatever that was. It was freedom and pay all wrapped in one package, and it would get them out of the orphanage’s hair for the rest of the summer. Seemed like a perfect plan to her, and Mr. Blishwick would surely sway their minds regardless of what they thought. Apparently he had that sort of effect on people. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

MAYBE IT WAS BECAUSE NATE WAS BUZZED, BUT he got a strange satisfaction at Nessa's willing admittance. She wasn't usually so honest, but this wasn't exactly a compliment either. "Don't be jealous," He mumbled under his breath, cuffing his nose with his thumb, the skin numb from the cold. "You're not missing anything." In a way, she was, but he was sort of glad that particular scene had never appealed to her. Better that she never be curious, if he were totally honest with himself. It was toxic.
There was a stiff silence after Nate's quiet confession, and he wondered if she would simply up and leave. It wouldn't be the first time they'd left a thousand words unsaid. Instead, it appeared like she was simply in thought. When she spoke again, Nate flinched, her voice like a gunshot in the quiet. He eyed her suspiciously, wondering if she was going to give him the finger or something.
Instead, a flyer was thrust in to his doubling vision. His clumsy hands scrambling until he grabbed it, leaning forward until he almost fell from his stoop. He looked at it for a second, the bright colours, the insane amount of fonts. It was an artistic nightmare. Like a flyer for a party. "What the fuck is-" And then he stopped as the words sunk in. A 'chance of a lifetime'. 'Room and board provided', including a small weekly stipend for work provided. Nate sniffed, "You think they'll hire two orphans at Blishwick Enterprises?'" Nate snorted and handed the flyer back, but it was obvious that his interest was piqued.
"We wouldn't even get a second look, Ness." His voice was a little disappointed, too vulnerable in his drunken, stoned state. He was ambitious, sure, but not when it came to things he felt he knew he'd never succeed at. Nate liked playing games he knew he would win. "Plus," He rubbed a restless hand over his mouth. "Could you stand listening to Jimmie and Jimbo Blishwick teach you how to love all summer?" Nate didn't know Jimmie, and he knew Jimbo only through his outlandish and garish celebrations of 'love'.

▲ What the hell did he mean by that? Not missing out on anything? Nessa didn’t exactly crave friendships with anyone in particular (and that was assuming Nate’s gang were even considered his friends - or if they were his goons), but she felt like she had been stabbed when he said that. He was certainly speaking from a place of privilege, because he at least had someone other than her. She had one. Him. And sometimes she wondered if that was even true, or if it was because they were too because of their situation. Regardless, she was still jealous of not having at least another person that didn’t think she was going to rip their head off if they interacted with her for longer than five minutes. That, of course, was mostly her fault, but still. Having friends didn’t matter when her new proposed plan was on the table. This was an escape, their first real chance at freedom for the foreseeable future. And it was legal. She understood Nate’s initial negativity to it, she had been the same way when she first started reading over the flier when Jimmie Blishwick dropped it off a few days ago. But there was a trick to it all, and that was the part Nate didn’t know about yet. Nessa let him shoot down the plan with his various reasons, all completely valid in a normal situation like this, before she took it back from him. His final point, of dealing with the Blishwick point was the most contentious for her as well, but she could survive a few months dealing with their personalities if it meant freedom from here. “They’d give us a second look if it was only the two of us applying,” she sniffed, folding up the flier and putting it gently back in her pocket. “Jimmie Blishwick didn’t seem so keen to be handing them out, and she was fine when I agreed to bin the whole lot she brought by. Except for the two I kept for us.” Nessa was unsure if there were more floating about in the wild, but her impression from the Blishwick girl was that this opportunity was meant for the kids at the orphanage only. “And the orphanage would gladly pass us both off if it meant less trouble for them for the summer.”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

SOMETIMES NATE FORGOT THAT NESSA HAD A schemers heart, even without him. The flyer was heavy in his drunken hands. Glossy and most of all expensive. He lifted his head, blinking at her lazily. As if he'd imagined what she had said. And, when it settled in place, Nate's face split in to a large, thin grin. "See you made a friend without me..." Nate drawled, leaning forward to catch the spelling address to send all prospective applicants.
"When we do we start?" Nate asked, turning the flyer to catch the end date. He didn't like the idea of being at Jimbo Blishwick's beck and call. Worst of all, Jimmie Blishwick's. But, it beat hiding in the woods behind the orphanage for peace and quiet. Plus, Nate had always been terribly curious about how the other half lived. Shiny shoes and packed lunches. He flicked the flyer back towards Nessa. "If this backfires, I blame you." He was still grinning, glimmering eyes and flushed cheeks. But, it was common interest. They were driven. And Nate was determined to win, though he wasn't certain of the prize.

▲ Trying to read Nate’s mental deliberations just from his facial reactions was impossible in the little light they had between them, but she knew what his silence meant. That or he had passed out drunk, sitting up. Hauling him back to his bedroom would be impossible without magic. He was basically a giant compared to her and the added deadweight from his drunken ass wouldn’t make it any easier. After a few seconds of wondering if he was still conscious, Nessa was about to poke him in the shoulder when he looked up at her. “Don’t you dare joke about that,” Nessa warned him, turning what would have been a worried poke into a jab with her nail, directed at his neck. The only way she would be caught dead being pleasant towards Jimmie Blishwick was if her father was around. She had no problem being the two-faced Slytherin she was born to be. Jimbo Blishwick would only think his child was being a brat, because obviously he wanted assistance and she did not. “Mid-June, I think?” she answered, pulling her own copy of the flier closer to her nose so that she could give it another once over. Heavy eyes from sleep and what they had been smoking made it impossible to find the exact date then and there, but she was positive it was set for a few weeks from now. Surviving that long at the orphanage with their new roommates wasn’t impossible. She could do it, and all Nate had to do was make sure he wasn’t kicked out or arrested first. The typical summer worries for them. “Fine. But I don’t think it will. The guy has his face plastered all over everything he can physically put it on. There’s no way he won’t accept the only two applications he gets.” Jimmie Blishwick had seemed worried about that happening, which is why she had asked Nessa to toss them. Jimmie Blishwick also clearly didn’t have a nefarious bone in her body, if she didn’t think that whole encounter was going to backfire on her. Stupid rich girl. She deserved being tortured by their presence over the summer. [The End] MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0
