april 17th, 2025 Jamie was not okay.
Ever since taking the modified Wolfsbane Potion for the full moon, she hadn't been okay. She woke up after the moon overwhelmed, but had just assumed it was because she had a rough night on a new medication. It hadn't faded, though. Every smell still seemed amplified a hundred fold, every noise louder than ever before. She heard strange buzzing, screeching noises she couldn't pinpoint, and it had gotten past the point of annoyance and into real fear. The only source Jamie could think of for the strange happenings was the potion itself. If she wanted to talk about the potion, there was only one person she could ask - her coworker and friend, Sienna. Even leaving the house was a trial. Jamie had found earplugs and a series of spells to help dampen her senses enough that she didn't feel like ripping her hair out, but even then she felt off balance and wrong.
She stumbled through the front of Slug and Jigger's, trying her best not to breathe in. The apothecary smelled bad even normally, and with the strange happenings with her sense of smell, Jamie wasn't sure she could make it through without vomiting. When she finally made it into the back room, Jamie slammed the door behind her.
"We have a problem."

Sienna was at a loss as to why the strange things always ended up on her desk. Was her luck really that rotten, or was Jamie just passing things on to Si when she wasn’t looking? Neither option could really be discounted at this stage, but at the same time, if this was the worst thing to happen to her this week, then Si could accept that. This ‘crisis’ was small beans – in a manner of speaking.
Still, there was the question of how to carefully relocate the giant puffapod currently occupying most of her desk space. Its beans were a blessing and a curse – Si could certainly find a use for them in one of her current projects, since naturally the potion-making properties of puffapods were decently well-known. But there was the question of how to move the plant without letting the beans come into contact with anything solid, since that would create an entirely different problem for the back room of Slug and Jigger’s.
In the end, Sienna decided it was worth risking a levitation charm, since the alternative was to find her gloves and move the plant manually. The thought of doing that brought back too many memories of Herbology class. She managed to get the plant in the air with no problem, but the sudden slamming of a door startled her and Si jumped. Her wand promptly lost the connection with the plant and it fell with a thump to the floor – where some of the beans promptly scattered and began to bloom as soon as they touched the ground. “Merlin and Morgana!” Si gasped, her gaze fixed on the wilted plant.
“No kidding, look at this mess…” Si responded glumly, before it registered in her mind that Jamie had spoken before Si’s clumsy move. Sienna looked up at Jamie and gasped again – her coworker looked tired and disheveled, and were those earplugs? “Jamie…what happened?”

Sienna cursed when Jamie blustered into the room, agreeing with her proclamation something was wrong. She just meant the plant that had fallen, though, and Jamie’s problems were much, much greater than a plant needing to be repotted. “I don’t know,” she groaned when Sienna asked what happened to her. That was the worst part of it all – Jamie could assume what had gone wrong, but she didn’t know for sure. “I think – I think the potion did something.” She wrinkled her nose when she took another deep breath to speak and caught a whiff of the puffapod Sienna had just been transferring. It smelled strange, even though she had never noticed it having any scent at all normally. “I can – I can smell. And hear. Like… like…” she gulped. “Like the wolf, I think.” She would let Sienna draw her own conclusions from that information. They had both known the experimental potion could have side effects, but Jamie had never imagined this one.

Sienna hovered by the puffapod, anxious but uncertain how to move forward with the situation. Jamie did not look okay, and Si’s usual next steps would be a hug and a cup of tea. But it didn’t escape her how Jamie had messily entered the room as if disoriented, and how even now the presence of the puffapod appeared to be bothering her. So she wasn’t sure if physical proximity was really the best thing for her friend and coworker right now.
Still, when Jamie mentioned that the potion was the likely culprit…well that concerned Sienna both as a friend and as a researcher. They were still in a highly experimental phase for Aware Wolf, and every minute change could mean something important. So Sienna cautiously got closer, although she avoided touching Jamie (how close Sienna could get would be a decision the other witch would have to make). She quickly summoned the journal with all her notes, which came flying from the other side of the room. “You have the same heightened senses as when you’re transformed?” Sienna repeated in a soft voice, quickly flipping through the pages to identify which batch Jamie had taken this month. She couldn’t help herself, and her next question came out more clinical. “Can you describe what you’re, um, feeling right now? Seeing, hearing, smelling…?”

Sienna smelled. Of course she did, everything smelled, but it was strange that this was more than just the scent of perfume. It was the scent of the person, not anything she was wearing on top of her. At least Jamie had her own brain with the wolf’s senses, so she wasn’t thinking prey. That would’ve been a disaster on top of a disaster. “I think so, yeah. But it’s different.” Jamie couldn’t tell if it was different because her human anatomy was trying to process things it wasn’t ready for, or if she was just used to being able to hear and smell more as the wolf, but she did not like it now, not one bit.
“I can smell you. And the puffapod, and every ingredient in the store. And I can hear you even with these in,” she gestured to the earplugs, “and also, someone just went into the shop next door. The bell rang.” Jamie gulped. “There’s, um, a lot of smells I don’t recognize. I don’t know if they’re people, or things, or -” She swallowed hard. “It’s making my head hurt, and I don’t like it. It’s information overload.” Yes, that was probably the simplest way to describe it: Jamie was overloaded.

Sienna felt her concern growing with every word Jamie said. Side effects of the potion were one thing – it was normal to expect some unusual aftereffects and it happened with every potion. Those were easy enough to react to, usually with the help of some other ingredient, and Si had been waiting to see what changes would emerge from the recipe she was constantly minutely tweaking. But Jamie looked…frazzled in an unusual way, and the information overload she was describing with her sense of smell and hearing sounded a little frightening.
But it was enough to prompt her into action. “Okay,” Sienna said, her tone soft but decisive. She pocketed her journal in her robes and readjusted her grip on her wand. “Let’s try and make you a little more comfortable first.” Si quickly Vanished the blooming puffapod seeds and levitated the plant until it was safely resting on the shelf behind her worktable, which was as far away from Jamie as she could manage. After a brief pause, she summoned a towel to throw over the plant. Sienna edged around her partner to place lids on all the cauldrons currently in use, then shut the door to the backroom and fired off a few silencing charms in its general direction. There didn’t seem to be any difference in the room to her, but then again she wasn’t the one experiencing a massive sensory overload. “Is that better…?” she asked cautiously, trying to keep her tone quiet. She slowly withdrew her notebook again and flipped to an empty page to start scribbling some thoughts. What must have caused this particular side effect?

One of the things that Jamie appreciated most about Sienna but had never been able to articulate before this moment was how kind she was. Even if Sienna’s work was potions, not people, the moment Jamie said she was uncomfortable, Sienna tried to make it better. The puffapod was moved away from her, the door was closed and the outside world silenced, and Jamie felt like she could breathe for the first time since she left her house. She wasn’t planning on removing her other precautions until she knew what the hell was happening, but this was a start.
“Much, thank you.” Jamie wasn’t sure if she was whispering or screaming; even the feedback from her own brain seemed to be flipped on her head. Jamie dug the heels of her hands into the backs of her eyes. Normally when she was overwhelmed she would take a deep breath, but that seemed like a bad idea right about now. “Why is this happening?” she whimpered, a bit pathetically. With everything assaulting her senses it was hard for her to even remember what they had put in their latest version of the potion, let alone what might’ve gone awry.

Sienna could feel her heart breaking a little as she took in how terrible – and maybe a little scared – Jamie looked. She seemed slightly less uncomfortable after Sienna had moved things around and applied some silencing charms, but she still looked disheveled and had pressed her hands into her eyes as if trying to block out the entire world. Si was incredibly concerned about her friend, especially with the thought that she must have been responsible for it with the potion. Her mind frantically flipped through everything she could remember about Aware Wolf -- what ingredients had she tweaked in this last batch? What had Jamie been given versus Rhys? Had something about her routine or lifestyle changed to provoke this extreme reaction, or was the answer solely in the potion? She was also dreading Rhys’s next visit to debrief on his full moon, because he was going to kill her when he saw the state his sister was in.
But one challenge at a time. Jamie asked why this was happening, and Si bit her lip with worry. “I don’t know,” she replied honestly, keeping her voice as quiet and soothing as she could. “But we’ll get to the bottom of this. Sit down, and have some water.” Si pointed out the bottled water on her desk, then inched across the room to sit down as well and start flipping through her notebook. She always kept water and aspirin on hand, since Rhys usually looked like death whenever he came in -- although that couldn't be all Sienna's fault. The hints she'd gotten about his life thus far didn't suggest particularly healthy habits. “I changed the recipe this month for you, so let’s start there. Can you…tell me how everything went? Anything different from normal?”
