IT WAS QUITE POSSIBLY THE WORST NEWS Jimmie had heard in years, but she had nowhere to concentrate her disgust but towards herself. The internship, another impulsive venture of her father, was supposed to go down like any other of his pointless ships. And yet, she had woken up the day before to be told that the decision was made and that in less than 24 hours she would have two new house mates. Jimmie hadn't asked any questions to begin with, too wrapped up in her plot to strangle that Vanessa girl.
And then, she'd been instructed to greet the interns as her father was 'held up' with another client. To make them 'feel at home'. Of course that girl had let the flyers be handed out, it was exactly what Jimmie hadn't wanted her to do. But, no matter how spiteful she imagined the girl, what she hadn't expected was to see her standing in her doorway with a bag full of her things. The door swinging open to reveal Nessa standing smugly, and a sour looking Nathaniel Forrester standing by her shoulder, looking as unhappy as he was smartly dressed. 'For an orphan', her spoiled little brain thought helplessly.
"Vanessa," Jimmie said with a prim little mouth, her hands clenched in to fists behind her back. "I'd like to say I'm surprised to see you again so soon." She was speaking terribly formally, her proper English accent as stiff as it was out of place in her mouth. "But, we did specify that you couldn't bring any pets." She jutted her chin at the broad shouldered furrowed brow standing behind her, remembering vividly the clenched expression on Sari Fawley's face as she'd agonised over the pig. "You were supposed to leave your dog at home."

▲ It was quite possibly the best news Nessa had heard in years, but hiding her giddiness until confronted with Jimmie Blishwick’s scowl was nigh impossible. Nessa had been bouncing around all week after receiving the letter from Jimbo Blishwick himself stating that both she and Nate had been selected as his summer interns or whatever. She still had no idea what it was that they had signed up for, but that didn’t matter anymore. The matchmaker’s daughter really screwed the pooch on this one. Nessa was looking forward to rubbing it in her face for the remainder of the summer, and maybe even to the school year as well. She wasn’t much of a gossiper in her own right and yet Nessa couldn’t wait to accidentally let slip that she had been taken in by Jimmie’s father over the summer once she got back to school. Maybe she would even leave open the hope of being adopted one day! One loud mouthed student is all she would need to spread that little gem like a venereal disease throughout the castle. Bringing Jimmie down a few pegs would be unbelievably satisfying to watch, and it all started now. “Jimbo,” Nessa countered back, knowing that it would only take one exchange like that before they were both using real names again. She had to give it to the girl though, calling Nate her dog was the perfect underhanded comment, and Nessa could work with that. “It’s okay,” she began, reaching up to scratch at his chin, “He’s house-broken already. Just can’t give him anything to drink after six o’clock and he won’t make a mess on the floor. We’re still working on that, aren’t we love?” Tossing a wink up at her brutish friend, she pushed past Jimmie with her duffle bag, and entered the Blishwick home. “I thought you lived in a mansion? This is…smaller than I expected.” And still larger than any house she had ever stepped foot in. Nessa had thought the Hogwarts dorms were a luxury (as opposed to the orphanage ones), but a whole house that was decked out in knick-knacks that probably cost more than everything she owned? Preposterous. For comparisons sake, everything she did own was currently in her bag, which wasn’t saying much. Turning around with a spin to face Jimmie again, Nessa continued, “So do we get our own rooms, or are we going to be bunking it all summer? Unless you want a man-sized body pillow, then Nate will work pretty well.” She wanted to see his reaction more than Jimmie’s, considering the nonsense he seemed to be getting himself into lately. The odds of seeing Nate this summer outside of their obligated work time was probably going to be less than normal. She had a feeling a lot of her spare time was going to be spent trying to get under Jimmie’s skin. Which was totally fine with her. Boring, sure, but still fine. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

summer, 2025 IT HAD BEEN NESSA'S GRAND PLAN, BUT NATE had only encouraged it. He remembered that booze soaked night, staring blearily at the flyer that would sign his entire life away. Why had he said yes? Oh, right. Because his roommate was a wet blanket and if he had to hear one more grating American accent he would truly set the place alight.
Hovering near Nessa's shoulder, Nate had not expected the cosy little flat. In fact, he'd been quite disappointed when they'd taken the elevator all the way up to a floor that wasn't even a penthouse. And then the prim little face of Jameson Blishwick. Her scorn clearly evident, lank blonde hair wet and stringy. As if she couldn't afford a blow dryer. He looked down at Nessa, her cheeks lifting as she grinned with pure satisfaction. This was what she had wanted. It was cold, petty revenge. But, it worked.
"Fuck off, Ness." Nate grumbled, roughly shouldering past her and in to the flat. He dropped their bags near the door and promptly began wandering around the room. It was a hoarders dream. Big, dark wood frames with old portraits in them. None moved, thank goodness. He wrinkled his nose, spinning and old, yellow aged globe, looking for a seam in case it hid some booze. All the while, Nessa and Jimmie engaged in the world's worst pissing contest. "Bet everything in here costs a bomb." Nate piped in, tossing a round glass paperweight in to the air. There was an old crup lasered on the inside, it bounced around as he tossed it.
Small hand snatching it from the air, Nate would have been impressed if he cared. He already knew Jimmie played Quidditch when she wasn't poking her nose in other people's business. "She wishes." He retorted over Jimmie's head, snickering as he looked down his nose at her, circling like a shark. Jimmie looked stiff and uncomfortable, but Nate thought she always looked like she had a stick up her arse. "I'd rather sleep hanging by my ankles out the back window." And he grinned at Nessa, his eyes conveying that maybe he was warming to this idea after all.

THE INTRUSION WAS IMMEDIATE AND COMPLETE. Tainting the spaces Jimmie held sacred. She barely even had friends over, never mind two unwanted guests. Her home was her own and she felt possessive of it. Of course, Nathaniel was the firs to breach the gap. Jimmie's head swivelling to watch him carefully, her nostrils flaring with irritation. A perfectly fine day, ruined. "I'll believe it when I see it." Jimmie said snidely, her cheeks puffed and mouth terse.
"It's a perfectly fine space for two." Jimmie crossed her arms, feeling defensive. They were bloody millionaires. Who who in London owned a 'mansion' other than maybe the Queen herself. "But, by all means, if this doesn't suit your taste you're free to go home." Gesturing towards the door, Jimmie wondered if hope was everlasting. These beetles would infest and dig holes in to the foundations, she knew they would be stubborn to shift.
Catching the paperweight mid air, Jimmie drew in an angry breath. She disliked Nessa, but she despised Nathaniel. "That is a family heirloom." She seethed, holding it to her chest, the crup inside swaying dizzily. It had been owned by her great great grandfather, having won prizes for its intelligence and fine, glossy coat. "Not that you would know what that is." Jimmie added meanly, shaking her head and scoffing as she leaned back. She felt herself becoming insufferably unpleasant and it was all their fault.
"God, I promise you I do not." Jimmie sniffed, smirking meanly as she shifted her damp hair and looked at Nessa. "I've heard he's riddled." With STD's and STI's of all sorts. Of course, she hadn't, but he might as well be with the sordid tales she'd heard. Plus, he'd driven Sari half mad and that was simply intolerable. "You'll take the spare, dad's had two singles made up for you." She drew in a sobering breath and tried to make her smile serene. It did not work. "But, feel free to push them together should you get lonely." And then she placed the paperweight back down in its place.

▲ The Blishwick girl had a point; this home did look like it was made for only two. From what she could gleam of the sitting area, it was tailored more for entertaining than living, and the amount of junk cluttering the various shelves and tables served the proprietor’s personality perfectly. Nate had already found his way over to some of the items, and Nessa tried to shoot him a look that told him not to take anything yet. This had to be a dream come true for him, but there was also no telling what sort of charms rich folks had on their homes. There was very little for them to lift at the orphanage that wasn’t extra food or knick-knacks left out in the open by their new American compatriots. “We don’t have a home, remember?” she corrected the other girl, dropping her bag on the ground with a thud. The bottom was loaded with her books for the following school year, the rest filled with her meager belongings. Listening to Blishwick go after Nate for the things he was picking up, Nessa walked further into the entryway, and studied a wall that doubled as a bookshelf. She had never seen such a large personal collection outside of Hogwarts. For whatever reason, she assumed that the inside of the Blishwick home would look something like the interior of Madame Puddifoot’s, considering the elder Blishwick’s career. It definitely felt worldlier than she had expected, and was a sensory overload compared to her dorm at Hogwarts or the orphanage. “You’re not wrong about that,” Nessa commented when Blishwick seemed to indicate Nate’s frequent extracurricular activities. “I’d advise locking your door at night.” Crossing back to her bag, Nessa picked it up again and slung it over her shoulder, kicking at the side of Nate’s foot with her boot as she passed him. “Speaking of, I guess we should probably see the room now. I’m getting tired of carrying my shit around.” She went even further into the flat, finding a turn and peering down its long, wood-paneled hallway. It seemed like the kind that would have bedrooms in it. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

summer, 2025 THE PAPERWEIGHT WAS SNATCHED MID AIR SO quickly, Nate might have been a little impressed. His chin dropping to stare at the side of Jimmie's face as she clutched it to her chest like a scandalised maiden. God, this was going to be fun, he thought. Taking a measured step back in case her reflexes were as keen at throwing as they were at catching. He forgot she played Quidditch. Badly, he would say. Attention shifting to Nessa as she followed him in to the entryway and promptly dropped her bag. He had packed light, for fear of Jimmie stealing his things, or snooping. Just his best clothes and a tin of money, joints and trinkets. Nessa liked to be prepared, but he wasn't about to lose his books to a Blishwick. Though, she was likely to lose hers first as Nate watched Nessa immediately gravitate towards the line of shelves. It was impressive really, though he'd never admit as much. Nate liked knowing things, and books had always been his second best way to learning. The first being, well, stealing. "Mm, beats the chastity belt your wearing, Ness." Nate retorted, eyeing Ness as he swept past Jimmie, leaning in just close enough whisper in to her ear. "Maybe she'll share!" Ruffling that fine, blonde hair that smelled like expensive fake coconuts. He almost gagged. Not that Jimmie wasn't Nate's type. She was pretty, in a prissy sort of way. He just knew she thought she was better than him. And that made him hate her in a deep, frightening way. He was going to ruin her pretty little house, he thought, as he abandoned Jimmie in the hallway and followed Nessa past the row of bookshelves. His fingers running across their embossed spines with greed.
He could feel Jimmie breathing down his neck, and Nate barked a laugh as he widened his stance, arms outstretched so that she couldn't squeeze past him. Moving from side to side until he grunted as an elbow drove on to the meat of his side and she muscled past him, almost colliding with Nessa's back. "It's in here." She panted, fingering strands of hair from her face, flushed like she'd run a marathon. She pulled the door open and motioned inside impatiently. Nate almost refused, but the crisp white bedding lured him inside. "Do we tip you at the door?" He commented, though his eyes were pinned inside.

WITH A SNIDE SMILE, JIMMIE NODDED BUT DID not speak further. She was good at talking, but being cruel didn't come naturally to her. Ignorant, most definitely. But not cruel. Jimmie was starting to feel like they were inviting that sort of behaviour. Like she was being manipulated. She could barely help herself. Trying to limit herself to one nasty jibe per topic as she replaced the paperweight and watched Nessa from her peripheral. She was looking at their books with intense interest. Jimmie felt the urge to shoo her as she swiped Nate away from her ear, catching his cheek as she did.
"Trust me!" Jimmie ground out, a spike of uncertain fear tightening her chest. "My door is hexed to high heaven..." She shot Nate a warning look, thinking of all the ways she could ward her door from creeping, orphan hands. It wasn't the fact that they came from the orphanage that bothered Jimmie. It was the way they interacted. The way they looked at her. Like it was Jimmie's fault they had no family and she had money.
Chasing Nathaniel down the hallway, Jimmie's panic began to rise. What if they went in to her room? What if they went in to her dad's? Muscling past him, Jimmie made sure to elbow Nate hard in the ribs as she did. She wrenched the door open, nearly clipping Nessa's shoulder as she did, before gesturing inside impatiently.
"In you go..." She ushered, herding them inside and then filling the frame to stop them from escaping. Like they were cattle. "You should spend some time in here." She said breathlessly. "At least until my dad gets home..." Her nose wrinkled distastefully. Finally acknowledging the deep, dark thread that ran from Nate's wrist and tangled at their feet before it shackled Nessa's. 'Gross', she thought, the disgust evident on her face. And with that, she stepped back and wrenched the door shut in front of her, sighing in relief.

▲ There was always something she disliked about the way Nate talked about her in front of others, right now being one of them. She shot a glare over her shoulder from her spot at the towering bookshelves when he mentioned the chastity belt. He absolutely knew that wasn’t true. What was the point in posturizing by bringing her down? If he was already thinking of trying to slink into Jimmie Blishwick’s pants, she had no problem telling him to give up. The hexes on her bedroom door certainly gave off the impression that she wanted nothing to do with either of them, though that was because Nessa had taken advantage of the entire situation. Nate needed to be more thankful of that, since she got the two of them out of the hell-hole that was the orphanage this summer. She hadn’t realized that she was the closest to the hallway that their room was located in. The library (or was this just for show?) she had taken an interest in was enthralling. Obviously it came nowhere close to the one at Hogwarts, but she also didn't realize people liked to own books to this degree. Not that she had any experience being in other people’s homes. Legally speaking, this was really the only one she had ever been invited into. The rest, which she could count on one hand, had been whilst following Nate’s lead, and he had a tendency to not ask for permission for most things. Her attention was eventually grabbed by Nate wandering down the hallway, and she followed, curious by whatever snooping he wanted to do. She completely forgot Jimmie was there, only realizing it when the Blishwick girl nearly ripped a door open into her face. Nessa made a guttural noise of disgust, though held back any words she had for the girl because she sort of approved of the rib jab Nate received. Blishwick wasn’t all that bad, apparently. “It’s like being put in time-out again, isn’t it?” she joked with Nate as she pushed by the other two. She purposely swung her bag backwards into her fellow orphan, hoping to hit him in the knees with the corner of her ancient copy of Hogwarts: A History. It was the perfect paperweight and blunt force weapon. “Hmm…” Nessa hummed as she looked around the room. Certainly nicer than her dorm at the orphanage or the Slytherin common room. “Jim, I’m a little peckish from the trip. I wouldn’t want to go raiding your kitchen without your permission, you know,” she stated, hoping that the warning would get the Blishwick doing more for the two of them. “And maybe some tea too? How’s that sound for you, Nate?”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

summer, 2025 WITH A REPRESSED GRUNT, NATE FELT THE MEAT around his ribs bend as Jimmie shoved her elbow deep in to his side. His arms still held out as he edged out of her way with a sharp, unfriendly laugh. He was the last one in the room, but that didn't faze him. Side aching, though he refused to press against it lest she think she really hurt him. He couldn't stand the idea of it. He entered slowly, leaning back as if to resist Jimmie's impatient pushing. Barking a laugh at Nessa's taunt. A lazy, irritating smile on his face as he turned away eventually and assessed the room she'd deposited them in. It wasn't a bad by any means, impersonal with brown wood and guest room sheets. Cushions plumped like they were paying to stay. "You did this for us?" Nate teased in a sickly sweet voice, chewing on the flesh inside of cheek as he turned back. A sharp book corner grazing his knee as he jerked away and flinched, cursing under his breath as he kicked that same leg out and stood on the delicate back of Nessa's heel in retaliation. Telling her with a sharp glare that this had been her idea, she'd better put on her friendliest face. "Did you hex our door for us too?" His head tilted, cheeks creasing with the effort to uphold his sleaziest smile.
Eying Jimmie, who was carefully edging her way from the room on polished shoe tips, Nate felt meanness tighten his gut. "You know, I think that sounds like a swell idea." He retorted, coming to stand closer to Nessa - risking her weaponised books to provide a taunting front. "I'd hate to tell your daddy that you let the orphans go hungry." That same bland, unfeeling smile on his face as he watched her blanch and then quickly slam the door in their faces.
After a quiet beat, Nate collapsed in to maniacal laughter, spinning in place. He took two large steps and threw himself on the bed closest to the window - for smoking purposes. "Do you think she'll be long with the tea?" He joked, shaking his head. A hand rubbing at his sore ribs, the other picking at the line of grazed skin where Nessa had thwacked him. This summer was going to be fun.

▲ It felt like her bag and book made contact, but she was stupid to think Nate wouldn’t retaliate, his food clamping down onto the heel of her shoe just in time with a step to make her half-trip as she went further into the room. The look he shot her was the same that usually came her way when the employees at the orphanage were wising up to something the two of them were trying to get away with. That was his cue to let him do the rest of the talking, and while she hated relenting to him, he was better with his words. If either of them were to get booted by Blishwick back to the orphanage, it was most likely going to be Nate. He probably preferred that anyways. While they were ultimately going to have more freedom here, there were less repercussions there, and he could continue his nasty little business dealings with very little problem from the orphanage director. Like she had just said, what were they going to do there? Put them in time-out again? She kept her mouth shut during the exchange prior to Jimmie leaving the room, and stifled a laugh until she could hear the girl’s footsteps disappear from outside the door. “Probably. After she finishes charming her bedroom door to keep us out and finds a suitable poison to shut you up,” she commented as she threw her bag at the foot of one of the beds and promptly took a seat on it. This one was hers now, and just from sitting down she could tell it was better than the one at the orphanage and really close to beating her four-poster at Hogwarts. At least Blishwick had a taste for quality. The two of them would be living like royalty here. “So what’s the plan? Supposedly we have to help Big Jim with his business, but I could care less about people falling in love. All I wanted was a prison break, and it went a lot better than I thought,” Nessa admitted as she laid back on the bed, her legs dangling off the side of it. The shoe Nate had stepped on the back of moments earlier slipping off of her foot as she banged her heels against the bedframe. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

summer, 2025 THE BED WAS HEINOUSLY COMFORTABLE. HEAD cushioned by a father pillow and sheets that were so high quality they were almost uncomfortable. Nate turned his face as Nessa sat down on the bed across from him, looking at the soft blonde hair spilling down the back of her neck as she spoke. This had been her scheme, and he felt almost triumphant for her. That's why I like you, he'd thought. Because you're so clever sometimes that it makes me jealous. Of course, he'd never say this, but he'd certainly thought it.
"Like Jimmy Love will let us match make." Nate snorted, turning his face away to stare at the textured ceiling. Such an old money thing, he thought. That even their ceilings were decorated. The only thing decorating his ceiling at the orphanage was a fossilised cobweb and a steadily growing patch of damp. "We'll push paper and pour coffee like hired house-elves." Nate stated bitterly, but he didn't feel any less comfortable because of it. "Still rather be here than there." Listening to the rhythmic thump of Nessa's feet and imagining that this was their future. With their own place, free of sticky faced orphans and bitter overseers. Nate reached a palm across the space between their beds for Nessa to smack wordlessly. Like a promise.
