PERSONALITY How is Madeleine a Hufflepuff, you may ask? The answer: for all the wrong reasons. The Sorting Hat dug out the core values for a Hufflepuff somewhere in there and aptly placed her without second-guessing itself. Her need for attention (and being the attention grabber) always lands her with a group of interesting characters. At Beauxbatons, these friends of hers could be backstabbing, lying, witches – but that wouldn’t sway Madeleine’s loyalty to them unless it was something irreprehensible. In her opinion, all magical peoples have a use, and in the case of her “friends” and those she aligns herself with, that use is via subtle manipulation. She’s not afraid to use it on adults either, managing to convince her parents to allow her and her twin to go to Hogwarts. Having a way with people could stem from growing up around the hotel business and watching her father order his staff around, or the fact that she’s a spoiled brat. Because of this, Madeleine has a huge ego and believes that she’s the best thing since sliced bread, a common trait amongst her siblings. The other common Hufflepuff trait, being a hard-worker, would be passed up just by looking at her normally. When it comes to doing the things she loves, such as taking care of animals or being passionate about opinions, there is no denying that she is hardworking. Just because she grew up with a wait staff and is rich doesn’t make her lazy. Being called so irritates her to no end. Madeleine is also impulsive, not understanding the concept of holding back or being humble. Because she is used to getting anything she wants, tossing money at her problems is usually the first thing to cross her mind when presented with an issue. Spilled coffee on a shirt? Buy a new one instead of having it cleaned, even if that’s the easier, more logical route. Obviously this is illogical while at school, but it doesn’t stop her from writing home about it and begging for a new one to be sent (the response from her parents always being that she should just clean the damn thing). With the way things in her life have been going recently though, she’s starting to see the harsh reality of what being humble should be, and how she’s severely screwed herself over the years. Has this changed her core values yet though? Nope. There are glimmers of hope here and there, but once a Chevalier, always a Chevalier. She has also reached a level of nihilism that is the complete opposite of her normal egocentric personality. It comes and goes in spurts, mostly when she realizes that she isn’t of the same class and blood that she used to be. This is definitely her comeuppance for the things she has said and done over the years. ORIGIN & RELATIONS Saint-Nom-La-Bretèche, Paris, France Lucy Chevalier – mother, no occupation, half-blood, American, Ilvermorny (Thunderbird) graduate Marc Chevalier – father, wwned a chain of hotels throughout France, both for muggles and magical folk, muggleborn (adopted into pureblooded family), French, Beauxbatons graduate Émile Chevalier – older brother, Beauxbatons Triwizard Champion, deceased, b. 2006 Charles - Great Dane HISTORY Marc Chevalier, a young wizard from France, had just graduated from Beauxbatons when he made a trip over to America to learn the ways of muggle business. Always being extremely interested in how the muggles became successful without the use of magic, he quickly figured out the American way of business, and met his future wife, Lucy. The two of them soon fell in love, and married. For the next five years Marc began to build his new chain of muggle hotels, a more lucrative business than anything he could have done in the wizarding world. He hoped that one day his young family would be able to live an easy life without much use of magic, something he had grown to dislike as he had adopted the muggle way of life. Lucy, on the other hand, wasn’t too keen on giving up her roots. She insisted that their children should be taught magic, and that they needed to go to Beauxbatons in France. Not happy with this decision, but not wanting to hold his family back, Marc and Lucy moved back to his native France where he made a bold business decision: opening muggle hotels that also allowed witches and wizards to attend, albeit under magical lock and key. This way the Chevalier family could be supported in both the muggle and magical world with money. Soon after moving back to France, Lucy became pregnant with their first child, aptly named Émile after Marc’s grandfather. Two years later, a girl, Madeleine. Elated at having another child, Marc did his best to grow his business so that Lucy and his children could live an easy life. The next 11 years were odd for the Chevalier children. They were meant to act like muggles when the hired help was around or when they were in public, but also uphold their pureblooded heritage when at home or with other magical families. Madeleine knew that they were better than those they served; her problem was that they were at the beck and call of people lower than her family. Muggles. At a young age, she found it ironic that in order to sustain their lifestyle, they had to take the money of the inferior. Not only that, the things she liked the most in life came from them. Feeling like she was used by this, her hatred for the family business and her parents’ lack of understanding only grew more and more. Aside from the deep-seated disdain for muggles and the hotel industry, life was pretty fun. A lot of things could be done with the influx of money from her father’s company, like shopping sprees or buying expensive pets. Horses, to be exact, and quite a few at that. While her brother had the family dog, Charles the Great Dane (whom she loves dearly as well), her mother enjoyed taking her to the stables and showing her how to take care of the horses. Madeleine’s passion for animals started with her sixth birthday and her first horse, and only continued to grow. Taking care of the horses was the only independent action she knew, everything else being set in front of her on a silver platter, sometimes literally. Émile left for Beauxbatons first, a whole two years ahead of her. Those should have been agonizing years spent waiting to attend school, but Madeleine found that she enjoyed the attention placed on her. With the oldest gone, she became a real princess. This manifested until it was time for her to go to school, and her arrogance knew no boundaries whilst at Beauxbatons. There were others like her and her brother, like minded and wealthy. They were her people. Becoming very cliquey quickly, Madeleine finally found her true calling. Fast-forward a few years. Fifth year. Émile left for the Triwizard Tournament being held at Hogwarts with a select group of other seventh years. Madeleine didn’t think much of it, her older brother’s competitive spirit making the summer before intolerable whenever around him and the letters to her after he was crowned the champion for Beauxbatons only making it worse. There was some merit to his abilities, with a victory in the first task and second place in the second. A disappointing loss in the third task meant he failed himself, the family, and Beauxbatons. Somewhat furious that Émile had gotten everyone’s hopes up that he could win the tournament, the news of the terrorist attack on Beauxbatons and Durmstrang as they left Hogwarts left Madeleine devastated. Almost all of the seventh years that had traveled to the English school were dead, including her brother. Convincing her parents to allow her to transfer to Hogwarts for her final two years of school was difficult at first. Madeleine wanted to see what Émile had seen for himself in his last year alive and walk in his shoes. There was pushback at first, until news broke that Ilvermorny, her mother’s alma mater, had their own problems and all of the students were being sent to Hogwarts for the foreseeable future. It provided an opening in her mother’s defense, and Madeleine made it out that she wanted to study with the same professors that her mother had, and that it wasn’t inherently Hogwarts’ fault for the death of her brother and classmates. If anything, more students, professors, and security at the English school would make it safer than Beauxbatons would be. Somehow, it worked. Her sixth year of school and first at Hogwarts started…rough. Maddie quickly realized that the Hogwarts and Ilvermorny students alike were not appreciative of who she was as a person, and what her name meant. They also didn’t seem to have a great deal of sympathy towards her brother or the other Beauxbatons students that had died the previous year, though that could have been more due to her approach on the subject. Garnering sympathy was a lot harder to do when she barely cared about others in the first place. During winter break that year, Maddie unfortunately found herself caught up in the dragon affair at Hogsmeade. She had begged her parents to let her stay at school that Christmas, only because she knew the event in the wizarding town was taking place and going home for such a short time would be a hassle. Plus, pleading always got her what she wanted and even more now that Émile was gone. Her enthusiasm to stay and mess around during the holidays was unfortunately cut short by the arrival of the dragons. Maddie suffered severe burns along her back and legs, which were swiftly taken care of despite leaving lasting scars. Scared to immediately return to Hogwarts after getting out of the hospital, she decided to head home to France for the remainder of the spring term and recoup before repeating her sixth year at Hogwarts again. Going back to Beauxbatons wasn’t even an option at this point, now that she had left once. Her parents’ nervousness around the news of the Hag’s Fever wasn’t unfounded: the entirety of the family business was grounded in travel, their best customers being magical. All of her father’s hotel locations in the UK had to be shuttered, and there were a fair few of them. While normally this wouldn’t have sunken the family business, the addition of a few unsavory investment decisions and improper money handling certainly did the trick. This time, it wasn’t just Maddie running off to England, and her parents decided that they would gather what they could that was left of monetary value after the bankruptcy, and move to the UK once the borders opened again. Obviously furious and almost frothing at the mouth like the spoiled child she was, Maddie refused to believe that financial ruin was A) possible for a Chevalier, and B ) that this was the only reason they were tucking their tails between their legs and running from it all. Being a brat, she forced her parents to tell her the true story, and it came out that the bankruptcy papers and closing of the business revealed that not only was her father adopted into the pureblooded, Chevalier family, but her mother had been lying about her status as well. The now physically and socially damaged Madeleine Chevalier has returned to England for the second half of the summer, with only a few bags of belongings and her ego taken down a few pegs. On May 15th, 2026, she thought she was going to die again. Classmates were paralyzed at dinner and the encroaching fire and cries of a dragon had her screaming as she ran out of the castle and away from anyone else. The summer months were spent recuperating from the PTSD that the event caused. Of course the destruction of Hogwarts meant that the attending students were to be doled out to the other magical schools. Maddie’s parents thought the best thing they could do for her was to send her somewhere familiar. So for her final year of school, it’s back to Beauxbatons. And all the students there know about the fall to poverty and her change in status. OOC
