Potions wasn’t Coltons strong suit by no means, yet as a Auror it was a necessary skill at times. From antidotes to other just in general useful potions. It was good to know how to make them or at least just have a few handy in missions. Yet Colton didn’t have those at the moment. In the move from America to Europe he left most of those back at the office or gave them to fellow MACUSA Auror’s. He learned his lesson of traveling with potions in his luggage. Ended up having to extinguish his suitcase mid trip. He would just have to restock on the ingredients or just buy the potions when in Europe. That was today as a matter a fact. His first day off since taking the foreign aid captain position.
Colton found the Apothecary on Diagon alley pretty easily all while getting the typical strange looks from the people in the alley. No one would ever be used to seeing someone dressed like him around Europe and he was fine with that. Part of Colton actually enjoyed it. He had asked co-workers where exactly he should go for potion supplies. Everyone had directed him to Slug & Jigger’s so this seemed like a safe bet. Just by opening the door he was hit with the familiar smells of an apothecary. It wasn’t one distinct smell but a hundred or so little ones all trying to mix and doing a terrible job at it. Colton adjusted to it as he walked in and started to walk around grabbing one of the baskets they had.
After getting what he could find Colton made his way to the counter and spoke to the woman behind it. “Excuse me ma’am. I tried my best to make do but there’s a few items I just can’t seem to come by.” Colton explained while looking at his scribbled note of items. “That and I’d love to have some potions made by a professional instead of these clumsy hands of mine. If it’s not too much trouble.”

Sienna had finally started to make real progress on the Polyjuice Potion she’d agreed to brew, although it had taken some time to properly start since the recipe was not widely known and some of the ingredients were tricky to acquire. She’d had to go herself to a local source to pick fluxweed at the full moon, and she still had to source the lacewing flies. It wasn’t illegal to brew, but it was incredibly demanding and Si had chosen to keep her copper cauldron covered in a corner of her workspace instead of taking it home. Nobody was ever in the back besides her and Jamie, anyway.
In fact, at that moment she was carefully handling some leeches to add to the potion to take advantage of being alone. It’s not that she didn’t trust Jamie, but there were some things Si was better off keeping to herself when they involved other people. Some ingredients were common enough in any number of potions, but some were rare and she’d certainly get questions about boomslang skin. Si was three leeches in (and practically holding her breath as she fished out the final one), when she was startled by a shopkeeper popping her head into the back.
Unlike most other times, Sienna did not startle and drop whatever she was holding. Instead, she finished adding the last leech and quickly covered the cauldron as the shopkeeper (who she’d only spoken to in passing a handful of times) explained that an ‘odd’ customer needed professional assistance. What makes somebody odd, Si wondered to herself as she moved the cauldron back to its usual semi-hidden spot and washed her hands before following the shopkeeper to the front of the store. The instant Si saw the customer in question, she quickly stopped a laugh that came out as a badly-stifled giggle…she’d never seen someone who looked like he had walked right out of the Wild West into London. Definitely American. The apothecary employee (Merlin, what was her name, Si was sure she’d known it at some point) hurried off, and Si looked over the customer again (quickly, because she didn’t want to get caught!) before glancing at the list in his hands.
“Good afternoon, you were hoping to speak with a potioneer?” Si greeted. “My name is Sienna and I work here at Slug and Jigger’s. I’d love to help with any of your potions needs, although I will warn you that if you can’t find something it’s probably because we don’t stock it for the public. There are some ingredients and potions we reserve for specific circumstances,” Si explained, as she’d been required to several times before. “Ministry orders, St. Mungo’s, that sort of thing,” she clarified after a pause.

The shopkeeper explained that they would have to get someone real quick and Colton waited. He disliked putting people on the spot in a typical setting. While working as an Auror it was needed and he didn’t mind. They were normally some dark witch or wizard who deserved it. Yet, your average everyday person he didn’t want to be a bother too. Sometimes it just couldn’t be helped. The shopkeeper returned for a moment with another woman before disappearing again. He really was hoping that he hadn’t been the reason for them to run off once again.
The second woman greeted him asking if he was looking for a potioneer before explained who she was. Also going into detail to explain just why he might not be able to find something. Having them hidden away from the public. Reserved for ministry orders and the like. “Makes sense.” Colton replied absent mindedly just thinking aloud. “I do suppose I could have just sent the order through the ministry but I like having something to do on my days off.” Colton explained with a laugh, hating to be bored but it would have made more sense for the ministry to just handle all this. “Side from that I like knowing who to thank when a potion saves my life out on the field. Nice to meet you Ms. Sienna, My name is Colton. Just recently transferred to the foreign aid Auror department.”

Sienna was hit with a burst of nostalgia as she continued to eye her new customer. Her grandmother had been old-style American, and every visit to her grandparents (which had increased exponentially after her mother died) had been accompanied with watching old Westerns and stories from her grandmother’s youth. She hadn’t thought about it in years – it’d been a long time since her last visit home and she didn’t really bother explaining Muggle things to most wizards. But it sprang to her mind as he began to speak out-loud, drawling just like John Wayne or her grandmamma.
Well, he was probably like most wizards, right? She could have a little fun and he probably wouldn’t even realize it. “You like visiting the apothecary on your days off? No outlaws to chase or cattle to round up today?” she asked innocently. She was in the back most days and didn’t get to have much fun around the customers or interact with whoever bought her potions. It was a shame, since she liked the social element of things. He was certainly polite, which was a nice change of pace from the usual bratty or curt clientele, but it wasn’t until his last few words that Si caught up with everything else he’d said. “You’re with MACUSA?” It was only a small leap to connect this clearly American cowboy to MACUSA to the British Ministry. But maybe something of a convenient one, considering Si had just mentioned that certain potions were reserved for Ministry orders only. Not to mention the mileage a criminal could presumably get from imitating a government official around unsuspecting civilians.
So her next statement was more guarded. “If you’re with the Ministry then we definitely stock anything you might need. If you can show me a badge or some ID…?”
