Today was the day that Irina got out of the hospital. Merlins’ beard she was happy to finally say that! She knew how important it was to fully heal properly, and that the poison took awhile to fully draw out, but six weeks was a long time. She’d had visitors, but one in particular she had wanted to see didn’t, but for a very good reason. Renfri was a fellow Cursebreaker and someone Irina looked up to a lot, and she had been injured while on assignment in China. Something with Fiendfyre, from what she had hurt, and it made her feel like she had gotten off lucky in the Mayan ruins. Dressed in street clothes for the first time in weeks, Irina made her way down to the Spell Damage ward, where Renfri was recuperating. She signed in with the Healer on duty, then made her way to Renfri’s space. “Hi Renfri,” she called softly as she drew the curtain back. Renfri looked so...small in the bed. Was that what her siblings saw when they came to visit her? “I just wanted to stop in, I’m getting released today, so I wanted to see how you were doing,” she asked, still standing at the edge, unsure if Renfri was really up to having a visitor right now or not. @renfri

Renfri was getting real sick of the hospital. She'd been a patient since April. Sure, she understood dark arts like the one that she messed with were very difficult to heal and recover from. Thankfully, she had an end goal in sight. The staff had notified her that she was "healing well" and therapy was going as well as could be expected, so if things continued this way she should be out by the end of the month. She'd been so preoccupied with the healing and therapy that when she heard Irina Krum was also in the hospital she was a bit shocked. Apparently she'd been poisoned on the job. An occupational hazard. Renfri couldn't tell you how many times she'd been poisoned, but Irina had gotten hit by a particularly nasty batch.
After a rough day of therapy, Renfri was back in her hospital room, laying in bed and breathing slowly. She'd lost most feeling in her left arm, but after therapy it always ached. That was when there was a knock at the door, announcing a visitor, and then a familiar voice. Irina. Renfri grunted as she sat up in the bed, just in time for the curtain to be pulled open. Irina looked good, strong. And, as she said, she was getting released today. Renfri smiled. "Thank god for that. This place is crowded enough." she teased. Though, it was a bit true. The hospital had been especially crowded the past few weeks.

Irina chuckled at Renfri’s quip. She always had a way with making her feel better, though she didn’t know if she did it intentionally or not. She instinctively covered her arm; it was still tender to the touch, but the poison had left her system and the wound on her arm was recovering nicely enough that she didn’t have to be here anymore. Renfri however, was another case. She glanced down at Renfri’s useless arm, trying to hold back the emotion she was feeling. “Do they know how long you’ll be here for?” she asked her softly. Fiendfyre was no joke, only the Darkest of Wizards would dare use that on another living soul. “What about the other Cursebreaker, the one that was with you?” she added, realizing she had not heard about his status in weeks. She knew part of the job description included danger around every vault, but she did not know if anyone could have prepared her for the type of danger and tragedies that came with it. @renfri

Well, at least Renfri could still make people laugh. Renfri hadn't lost that in the fire. She smiled a bit. She also noticed Irina's gaze lowering a bit. There was really only one place she might look. Sure, Renfri wasn't ashamed of her figure, but the elephant in the room was hard to ignore. The black sling her left arm rested in and the glove that hide most the scars. The purpose of the glove wasn't necessarily to hide the scars, it was to keep the burns away from oxygen. The glove was also coated in an aloe to help sooth the burns and help it heal. Supposedly. Renfri wasn't exactly upset about losing mobility in the arm, it was more... the loss of her career that upset her. She knew people that could function with one less arm. She just wasn't one of them... yet.
Renfri shrugged at the question, though only her right shoulder moved. "At least two more weeks, maybe more." A torturous timeline, Renfri would admit, but at least it was an end in sight. "They want to start relearning spell craft in a few days, and require I do it here." Renfri had been left handed, which was why basically losing her left arm was so devastating. The hospital wanted to make sure she at least could handle the basics with her right hand before discharging her.
At the mention of the other cursebreaker, Renfri scowled. "Alive, unfortunately." Renfri was feeling quite spiteful and angry towards the other curse breaker, for obviously reasons. He'd broken the rules, for some absurd reason he'd broken the rules and almost got both of them killed. "He's being forced to retire too though. That crazy lawyer for the bank mentioned it when she stopped by with my retirement paperwork." That particular encounter still make her angry. The bank didn't have any use for a broken cursebreaker, so of course they'd force her to retire. But still, maybe they could have at least waited until she was discharged.

Irina’s eyes widened. “Forced to retire? They’re forcing you to retire? But you’re one of the best Cursebreakers…” she trailed off, trying to steady her irritation. They couldn’t possibly be doing this to Renfri, who had done so much for the goblins who owned Gringotts. This was an outrage. “Is there anything anyone can do to change their mind? I mean, what you’ve done for them surely outweighs the injury,” she sputtered, crossing her arms. What could Irina do? She was still in training to be a full fledged Cursebreaker, she didn’t have any sway over anything. She couldn’t even use her family name even if she wanted to. She had turned away from Quidditch for just that reason; the Krum name meant nothing to goblins except the fact that they had a vault with them. Irina nodded mutely when Renfri explained the other Cursebreaker was fine and being forced to retire too. “Well I suppose that is for the best,” she said, though of course she had only heard bits and pieces of the story. “Would you tell me what happened? I mean, only if you want to of course,” she asked, her curiosity getting the better of her. @renfri

Oh. Irina's reaction made it clear that she hadn't heard yet. Well... The conversation would have come up eventually. In there line of work Irina would have noticed pretty quick if Renfri's name just seemed to disappear from current curse breaker jobs. Though... Her reaction also seemed to hint that she didn't really know how bad the injury was. Yes, Renfri had done a lot of work for Gringott's, and most injuries wouldn't require such an extreme reaction.
Renfri pursed her lips, trying to decide how to explain the incident, and why she wasn't allowed to return to curse breaking, when Irina spoke again, asking if she would tell Irina what happened. Well, Irina would understand why retirement was the only option when she knew what happened.
"It was a job in China. We'd discovered an old vault. Looked like it'd been abandoned for centuries." Nothing new or concerning with that information. They were always working on new discoveries. To see if they were worth more extensive work. "The main chamber had an unknown enchantment on the seal. We knew it must be the entrance to the rest of the vault, but it didn't have any of the usual enchantments. After, of course, we learned it was a blood seal." Blood seals were nearly unbreakable, and extremely rare. While the enchantment itself was breakable, what made them impossibly difficult was the fact that without someone of the bloodline the seal was tied to you couldn't even get close enough to start the dispell. That's what made them so dangerous. A blood seal was both easy and impossible, all depending on your luck. While Renfri hadn't specified them having someone of the bloodline on site, the fact that she said they discovered the seal "after" made clear they didn't. "The idiot touched the seal. And whatever family created that vault used fiendfyre as it's defense." Both huge issues. In curse breaking you didn't touch anything unless you knew for certain it wouldn't try to kill you. Then, of course fiendfyre was one of the biggest fears in the work. You never wanted to encountered the curse. Sure, you never wanted to encounter any nasty curses. But there were a rare few that scared even the most seasoned. fiendfyre killed everything in it's path.
Renfri didn't go into more depth, because... Did she need to? The message was there. He touched something he should. He unleashed a fiendfyre curse. "Irina... I'm not injured. I'm crippled," she said slowly, still trying to digest the fact herself. Cripple. That's what she was. "My left arm is dead. Shoulder down. It's completely useless." And Renfri had been left handed... She'd just lost her dominate arm. "I'm a liability to Gringott's. I can't even hold a wand properly." Renfri's voice cracks a few times, the raw emotion trying to break through to the surface. Knowing how devastating the accident was, and saying it aloud... it hit harder than ever. But... There was hope.
"I'm not useless though. Hogwarts' Headmistress visited me. She's asked me to teach History of Magic."

Irina sighed frustratedly; it wasn’t fair. Renfri was such a good Cursebreaker, and a good mentor to her and the other Cursebreakers in training. Surely an injury wouldn’t knock her out of commission for good? As Renfri continued talking however, she slowly came to realize the extent of her mentors’ injuries. Fiendfyre, of course it had to be Fiendfyre. Bloodlines were so important in those spells; she hadn’t come up against a blood spell of that caliber yet, but it sounded like Renfri’s partner hadn’t done his due diligence in researching them. That angered Irina; as a history buff and Cursebreaker, one should ALWAYS do research before doing something so dangerous. His actions had effectively ended both of their careers, and he was lucky it wasn’t their lives. “I’m so sorry Renfri. You deserved more than this,” she said quietly, not really knowing what else to say. However, when Renfri told her the new position she had accepted, Irina’s eyes lit up. “Of course you get to be History of Magic professor after I graduated,” she said jokingly. “That was my favorite subject at Hogwarts, along with Potions, and people always said I was weird for being so into history,” she added with a small shrug. “ We found an old ruin in Wales, my friend Lily and I and we thought it was a relic of Camelot,” she said with a giggle. “It ended up being an old song some witch a few centuries ago had carved after her lover had died, so that the world could always remember it. Not quite Camelot, but still beautiful,” she finished. @renfri

It was a welcoming and reassuring gesture, Irina’s apology. WHile Irina wasn’t to blame, hearing those words were... well comforting. To a degree. It helped her feel like someone at least emphasized. Of course, the nurses and healers were good at that but they weren’t curse breakers. They didn’t know the joys of her now old job. What she was being forced to leave behind because one idiot gambled and lost. The part that irked her the most was that he had to do it when she was in the vault. If she’d just woken up ten minutes later, walked a little slower.. Maybe she wouldn’t have been in the vault when it happened and would have been saved the pain. ” I appreciate that, Irina,” she answered just as quietly.
Irina’s energy at the news of her new job brought a small smile to Renfri’s lips. ”I do have to admit.. I always enjoyed teaching you newbies.” It’d always been a secret pleasure. She’d trained a good number of curse breakers. She’d been good at it, and she hoped it’d shown. Irina was a great curse breaker in the making. As Irina explained the cave, Renfri’s smile grew wider. ”Why, that’s the greatest discovery of them all. A story that the world has long forgotten. You found it, and because of that, the song of the witch now lives on. You helped bring her back to life. When I’m out of here, will you show me the cave?” Renfri’s was, after all, a history fan, just like Irina. A new discovery was the right adventure she needed after recent events.

Irina smiled; she really would miss seeing Renfri every time she reported to Gringotts for an assignment. Renfri was a calming presence, always easy to ask questions or for help, and it was no wonder she was asked to teach at Hogwarts. “Well you were always a wonderful mentor, now you’ll just be one for a younger group of kids,” she told her. Teaching had never been an interest of Irina’s; she was a go-getter and rarely liked to sit still. The last few weeks at Saint Mungo’s had been positively torturous for her because of that; she knew how important it was for them to study, cure and maintain her arm however, so she had to get through it. She had been fortunate enough that her family and boyfriend were frequent visitors, and that made the stay a little more bearable. Irina’s face lit up when Renfri lauded her discovery, and asked her to take her there when she recovered. “Ohh of course, I would love to!” she exclaimed brightly. She could picture the area in her mind’s eye; she knew once she returned to that part of Wales, she would easily be able to find it again. “Do you know when about you’re supposed to be released?” she asked, curious at how long Renfri had to go in her recovery. @renfri

Renfri couldn't help but laugh as Irina said she was a wonderful mentor. "There were probably plenty of times during training that you didn't think that." Renfri could be pretty tough. She didn't put up with bullshit. She was the type of person that was pleasant until you did something stupid. And then she would whip you back into line. But hey, in curse breaking you either did what you were told, or you did something stupid and hurt yourself. There wasn't much error for stupidity in the work so she had to be pretty hard on people. Irina was a good student though. She wanted to be a good curse breaker. Irina paid attention, and took it to heart. A natural born curse breaker, some would say. "Just wait, in a few years you'll be in my shoes."
Renfri smiled, glad that Irina was willing to share the discovery, but also her excitement. That excitement for history. It made it all worth it. The world was still full of discoveries. And Renfri knew that, at least curse breaking was going to be in good hands. "End of the month. They hope." She'd been cooped up here long enough... three months was more than long enough.

Irina laughed along with her; it was good to hear her laugh. “I appreciated the no bullshit approach to be honest. That’s the mentality I always have had myself,” she admitted. She couldn’t speak for the other trainees she had been with, and she wasn’t about to out them on their post-work grumblings. The idea of her training future Cursebreakers made her chuckle a little; she couldn’t really imagine herself in a position of leadership, but then again, perhaps it was just the way things go. “Well at least you’ll get a little time to yourself outside the hospital before returning to Hogwarts,” Irina commented, trying to look at the bright side of things. “What is one thing you’re looking forward to when you get out?” she asked, noting that it sounded almost as if she and Renfri were being released from prison, instead of a hospital. She knew Renfri wouldn’t take it that way though, so she wasn’t too concerned. @renfri

Renfri smiled. Well, at least Irina appreciated Renfri's training methods! Though, Hogwarts students might not feel the same. Now that she thought about it though... "You still have siblings at Hogwarts, don't you?" Renfri couldn't remember exact ages, but Irina had mentioned younger sisters before. Were any of them still at Hogwarts? Would she have to teach any of Irina's sisters? Who knew. History of Magic wasn't exactly a popular topic at Hogwarts.
That was one plus. That she'd be released at least a month or so before school started. While quite a bit of that time would be spent getting her affairs in order and starting to prepare for the upcoming semester, she'd at least have some time to spend enjoying herself. What would she do? Renfri pursed her lips, thinking. She'd never been one for "free time". She'd always been a work-a-holic since becoming a Curse Breaker. Whatever breaks she'd taken were forced upon her by the legal department of the bank so they could get rid of some of her paid time off. "Well... I suppose I'll finally have time to catch up on some reading." She had quite a few magical archeology books she'd been meaning to read for quite some time.

Irina nodded. “Just the one, Katiya or Kat as she usually goes by. Ana graduated this year and my brothers’ a year older than me,” she explained. It didn’t go unnoticed that the Krum matriarch had popped out four kids in four years, though she liked to avoid that sort of line of thinking. It was odd to think that just Kat remained at Hogwarts this upcoming year; it had felt like they’d been there since her brother had arrived all those years ago. After this year, no Krum would be at Hogwarts. That would be like Hogwarts not having a Weasley, though if she thought of it, most of them were also graduating or already graduated as well. “I’ve been reading a lot since I got here. I have a penchant for muggle fantasy novels; seeing what they created in their minds and how it stacks up to reality,” Irina admitted with a sheepish grin. Sure she could have spent her time reading the Daily Prophet or other nonfictional magic books, but she liked the sense of escapism these Muggle books gave her. It almost helped her forget that her arm had been a burned mess, and that she had been lucky to get out of it all alive and fully intact. “I’m a little sad my release date coincided with the World Cup though - how I do wish I could have attended,” she added, a bit wistfully. @renfri ooc: well thank Merlin she didn't XD

As Irina explained, Renfri nodded. So there was only one Krum at Hogwarts. She'd have to keep an eye out, and remember the name Katiya. Not that she expected siblings to follow in each other's foot steps. It would simply be interesting to see how different Irina's siblings might be from her. "I have a feeling she might not like History as much as you did." She teased lightly. Though, that was probably due to poor teachers in the past. History of Magic didn't have the best reputation.
Renfri had been doing a lot of reading thus far during her stay. Though not all for leisure. She'd been reading up on the course's curriculum. What they'd studied, what they hadn't. To get an idea of what subjects students were familiar with, and which ones they weren't. Though Irina had taken to muggle fiction. She smiled a little. "Do any stack up to reality?" She figured some probably got a lot of things right. She'd found references to things in their world in the muggle world all the time. Wands, magic, witches, wizards, phoenixes, unicorns, etc. At the mention of the upcoming match Renfri shrugged her one moveable shoulder. "No doubt there will be news coverage. Could tune into Witch TV." She personally wasn't that interested in watching the match.

Irina laughed. “Nobody I think, likes history as much as I do,” she admitted with a smile. Most of her classmates tended to doze off during History of Magic, but Irina found a way to stay attentive for the most part. The history itself was incredibly fascinating, but with the wrong professor….she could understand her classmates' boredom. She highly doubted they would find Renfri boring however. “Stack up? No, but they’re a fun read. I found a few fictional novels about fairies and druids though, so it is rather interesting to see how Muggles portray them, when we know otherwise,” Irina explained enthusiastically. Of course, druids had always been around she supposed but now they were starting to integrate more with wizarding society. Irina may have been completely out of it, but her Healer had mentioned that a druid had come in for a consultation while she was unconscious to try and figure out if it was a poison or a curse on her arm. She only wished she had been awake to meet him or her in person. “True, but it’s not the same as being there, you know?” Irina relented, pouting slightly. Though she refused to buy into her mothers pipe dream of an all-Krum Quidditch team, she did love attending matches, and the idea of not attending a World Cup match was disappointing to say the least. @renfri
