First rule of curse breaking: Don't touch something until you're sure it's safe.
Renfri had been working in the field for years and always followed the rules. Curse breaking was dangerous business, and those that didn't follow the rules got themselves, and others, killed. The rules weren't to ruin your fun, the rules kept you safe. And after so many years, Renfri lived and breathed them. They were second nature.
Today was, potentially, a day of great discovery. Depending on how many enchantments were on the vault. Depending on how many layers. Getting into a magical vault could be half the work, or just the tip of the ice berg. With her hair pulled up and out of her face, Renfri slowly walked through the vault entrance. The path was marked out in safety tape.
Rule number two: Stay on known and safe paths.
Floors could, and often were, booby trapped, depending on the culture. The Egyptians especially loved their floor traps. So, it was common procedure to mark out safe spots on the floor when known.
Rule number three: Always consult fellow Curse breakers before doing anything.
Renfri had just stepped into the main chamber of the vault. She wasn't working alone on this job, instead partnered with a similarly experienced Curse breaker. Though this was his first time in China. He'd usually stayed to South America before this dig. But for some reason he'd signed up for this project. He'd gotten up before her, which was a bit unusual, and was already inside by the time she woke up.
Renfri saw red the moment she stepped inside. He was off the taped path and inches from the seal. They'd only just started trying to decipher the spells the night before. They weren't anywhere near far deciphering the first enchantment, let alone breaking them. "Oi! What are you doing?!" Renfri's scream fell on deaf ears. It was too late. He'd broken all three golden rules today. HE was off the marked path. He wasn't consulting Renfri. And as his hand reached out and touched the seal.. There went rule number one.
A booming voice, in an ancient Chinese dialect, echoed through the chamber. Renfri didn't speak the dialect, but the voice was enchanted so she could feel the meaning in her bones.
You are not worthy.
And then the dragon statue in the chamber came alive, and breathed fire. Only it wasn't normal fire. Renfri sucked in a short breath. "Fiendfyre..."
