was she trespassing? yes. did she care? not really. it had taken her more than a minute to find out where ares lestrange hung his hat at night, it had taken more than a few letters and conversations with different people but she'd had a lot of time to kill while waiting to be allowed back into the country. she'd used her time wisely. she'd started trying to hunt the father of her daughter down almost as soon as she knew she'd be heading back to her home soil. after all, she'd never planned to keep ashlyn a secret from him. it was just she hadn't found herself with the opportunity to tell him. it wasn't exactly something she could put into a letter. so that's how she found herself in his living room, sitting on the couch and waiting for him. she couldn't help but think he was taking his sweet time to get home, even if he didn't know she'd been coming he could have at least come home.
there was no sign of another woman living in the apartment, she'd never expected the loose gun that was ares to settle down but his place just screamed .. him. there didn't seem to be a delicate touch to it in the slightest. she didn't see the harm in making herself at home while she was there, after all he was the one keeping her waiting. the bath she'd drawn felt heavenly against her skin as she sunk into the hot water, the steam filling the room around her. she took a moment to enjoy it, closing her eyes as she leaned her head back against the warm porcelain.
she lingered for a little longer than she should have, only getting out when the steam had vanished back into the air and the water had lost almost all it's searing heat, though it was still warm. she had pulled her hair up into a loose knot ontop of her head and she could feel parts of it falling loose, curling against her back and shoulders as she rummaged through a cupboard to find a button down shirt. she didn't feel like pulling on anything tight after the bath she'd taken. she pulled it over her bare shoulders, doing up just a few of the buttons, lucky that ares was taller than her, it covered her, just. she hummed to herself as she walked out of the bathroom, crossing to where she could see some bottles resting on a shelf and she considered which one to open.

ANOTHER SHIT-SHOW OF A DAY at Hogs Head had passed. For the Lestrange — who was meant to be spending his day off with his dear son Sebastian, was annoyed his entire ten hour shift. A manager had called in sick, fearful of the Hags fever that had been passing and with no other managers around, Ares a regular bartender, was called in. Considering he did his job well enough a promotion would be in the near horizon. Or so he hoped anyway. It was a little over ten when the Lestrange walked up to his floor of his new apartment when he realised…Things weren’t exactly right. Since moving from his crappy old place, the male took precautions for himself, especially if the Oliveira’s had allowed Sebastian to spend a night or two. He wanted to make sure things were safe for his son and himself. Especially since the eldest Lestrange wasn’t exactly friends with everyone.
So when he noticed the slight creak in his front door and the new dip in his couch, Ares knew he had a visitor waiting for him. Without a need for his wand, Ares only hoped to assume it was an old friend potentially playing a prank on him. Or maybe one of his colleagues from work that he didn’t mind bonding with sometimes. ”I know you’re here…” He called out, smiling to himself, clicking his fingers so the landless and non-verbal magic kicked in, turning on most of the lights within his home. ”So you might as well come out…” The smirk that hung heavy on the males lips had no means of leaving…Until the Lestrange set foot into his dining room, brows furrowing at the face that stared back at him.
”Sutton?..”

she heard the door move before she heard the sound of a foot coming to rest on the floor. she straightened a little but stayed where she was, folding her arms lightly over her chest as she brought a hand up to rest her chin on as she stared at the selection of alcohol he had to drink. she pictured his face in his voice, that hint of arrogance he'd always held himself with and the smugness in his voice that made it seem like nothing would faze him. she was sure she would rock that boat tonight, shake him with her presence and shatter him with the news she had to reveal to him. it was almost rather fun when she thoughts about it.
she tilted her head to the side slightly as he walked into the room she was in, announcing that whoever was there might as well come out. "do i look like i'm hiding?" she said simply as she turned to look at the bottles once more. she dropped her hands to her side as she stepped forward, reaching for one of the bottles, the motion making his shirt ride up along her body, dangerously close to revealing what might be considered a good view. she gripped the neck of the bottle with delicate fingers as she pulled it from it's place. "fine wines aren't your forte .. are they ares." she said as she turned to him, resting the base of the bottle in her other palm. "well don't just stand there, get some glasses." she said as she took a few steps toward him. "and here i was thinking you were a bartender." she said, her lips turning up into somewhat of a smirk.

HAVING SOMEONE IN THEIR HOME would usually fear a normal person. But it was safe to place Ares on a spectrum far from normal. With his first announcement, in which he stated he knew someone was there, Ares then never expected to hear that familiar voice. The same voice that would have him whipped in almost an instant. With his mouth hung open as she grabbed upon one of his alcohol bottles, Ares was…More than shocked. There were no words to describe the Lestrange’s surprise. At her command, he shook his head with a soft chuckle, raising his hand to wipe and rub at his eyes, trying to process…Well. Everything.
”H-How…” He began, letting out a heavy sigh. ”How did you know that?..Or even find me?..And where I live…?” To another wizard, Ares had been off the grid for the longest. But to someone as possibly crazy as Sarah once was…Ares was an open book. Did Sutton follow her methods?

she rolled her eyes when he asked her how she knew that. she didn't think he'd become stupid while she'd been gone. it stood to reason that some people knew where he worked, some people knew where he lived and no matter how hidden he thought he was, there was ways around it. especially for someone who worked at the ministry or walked in the same circles that they did. it hadn't been incredibly easy to find him but she hadn't struggled either. maybe it was asking the right questions of the shared mutual contacts. plus she wasn't ashamed to admit that batting your eyelashes got you a lot further than shows of brute force. she popped the cork on the bottle and took a sip of the liquid from the bottle, since it seemed clear that ares wasn't going to get the glasses like she's asked him. if she spilled it, thank merlin she was wearing one of his white shirts.
"you're not off the grid to everyone ares, though some people i spoke to didn't know where you were. kudos." she said as she set the bottle down and she took a few steps toward him. it would be so easy to slip back into what they did before, a touch here or a kiss there. she was certain he wouldn't rebuff any advance she might make but she couldn't, at least not yet. "i asked the right questions. i found the right people. we still have the same circle of people who know us." she said as she started to toy with the top button of the shirt, the one just above her chest, hiding what was underneath. "besides, what kind of mother would i be if i didn't check up on my daughter's father now i'm back?" she said simply. there was no other way to break it to him. he needed to know that he had a daughter, she wasn't going to hide ashlyn from him, she'd only done that while it was vital. now, she could tell him.

SURE, IT WAS A STUPID question that left Ares’ lips but then again…Sutton didn’t have the same tendencies or methods similar to Ares or even Sarah. Yet, this was proving him wrong completely. From her first statement, it was safe to say that while people knew of him, had seen him almost daily, they still didn’t know where he lived. Which was most definitely a plus over a minus. She stepped closer to him and all the Lestrange could do was swallow slowly, dark eyes simply watching her. She continued though, toying with the buttons on his shirt that she was wearing and all Ares could do was simply watch.
He felt creepy for doing so but like Sarah, Sutton had been a fling once…Twice…Well. Multiple times. It was safe to say he rather enjoyed his time with her also. And then the bomb dropped completely. ”Mother?…” He repeated. ”Daughter’s…Father?…” The shock spread across his face, and the tough front he presented crumbled all over again. He had not one…But two kids?. ”You’re kidding me right?” He asked, letting out a nervous laugh as a grin worked to his lips. ”You’re here to taunt me aren’t you, complain about how I suddenly left isn’t it?”

well from the second the words left her mouth she knew they had the desired affect on him. she watched the shock spread across his face and it was almost amusing, had it not been something of a serious conversation she needed to have wit him she'd have relished in the chance to watch him squirm, after all it was a favourite past time of hers but she couldn't enjoy it, at least not yet. "yes. mother, it's the term usually used for a woman whose had a child." she said as she perched upon the closest surface, figuring it would take a little time for it to sink in. then came the denial. the accusation that she was toying with him.
she almost had the strangest inclination to tell him she was joking, to watch his face fill with relief and then she could shatter it all over again but she didn't see the point. her daughter existed, his daughter existed and it was time she was recognised as such, rather than being a taboo subject that shamed her family. "you think i went through all the trouble to find you, just to taunt you?" she asked him, one eyebrow raising slightly. "your ego doesn't need that kind of boost." she said as she brought a hand up to twist some hair around her fingers softly. "you have a daughter. she's three and by some divine grace of lucifer ... she looks exactly like you."

AS SOON AS THE WORDS left Sutton's lips, Ares' head felt like it was spinning. It was the exact same scenario he felt three years back before disappearing because of his families death. The exact feeling of Sarah leaving a note detailed entirely to the Lestrange of Sebastians birth and how he would be with Sarah's family. Thankfully she wasn't crazy enough to drag the poor newborn along with her and her stringed chaos of madness but this? This was the icing on top of a cake. With his face still stunned from the shock, his eyes started to scan along the floor and eventually Ares had enough.
The words that left her lips again only went in one ear and came out of the other. It was as if she was enjoying it, even relaxing against the surface of his counters. He denied it again, mentally this time and even pushed past her for his best drink cabinet. "Exactly...Like...Me?." He questioned, struggling to even get the words out. Sebastian too, looked exactly like him and with the bottle uncapped, Ares' head tilted back, the bitter liquid trickling down his throat. "Please Sutton...Please...I can't go through this again...I..I have a son also...And I had no idea about him until his crazy fucking mother decided to pack up and disappear." Ares turned himself completely to his former flame now and started to walk closer, closing the gap between them.
"Are you...a hundred percent sure that she's even mine?..." The question had to be asked, and his eyes couldn't stop scanning her own. "And why didn't you...Tell me about her sooner? She's fucking three years old and I'm only knowing now?"

she could see this was going to be a slow process. granted she was aware that it would have been a shock but she didn't think it would take him this long to understand. she dropped her hand from her hair as she crossed her arms over her chest, her body tensing just a little as he seemed to start going on the defensive. the next bit of news was something she hadn't expected. he'd had a child with another woman? in what she could only guess were somewhat similar circumstances because he'd only found out when his mother had up and left. "you have a son?" she asked as he turned himself towards her, having taken a drink but somehow restrained himself from downing the rest of the bottle.
then he said it, the words that had her back up and her temper ready to flare at the hint of the wrong word being said about her daughter. her eyes flashed with heat as she pushed herself off the surface she was leaning on and she quickly closed the gap he'd been slowly making smaller. "listen here lestrange, you might have gone around sticking yourself into everything with wet lips, but i was a little more picky on who i let in." she had by no means been a saint or celibate but she hadn't rolled in the sheets with just anyone. at least not at the same time she'd been doing it with ares. "you don't know because my father didn't want our family name tainted by a bastard, let alone one with lestrange blood at that." she took another step towards him, willing him to challenge her so she could let the angry energy that was pulsing through her out. "i had four options. three of them would have been the end of me. one was to get rid of her. the second was to keep her, stay and be cast out by my family with no job, no money and no help. the third was to keep her, tell you and have faith that you'd be thrilled at the prospect of being a nineteen year old father. forgive me, but i didn't have that faith in you." she took a slight breath, pausing for only a second before she continued.
"the fourth option, which i took was to leave. leave the country, be supported by my father, which was a payoff so i wouldn't taint our name by announcing her existence. then they died and he can't punish me for her anymore." she narrowed her eyes just a little, feeling the scrutiny of his gaze against hers, their bodies close enough that she could feel the heat radiating off of him, almost being able to hear the heart that was beating in his chest.

IN HIS MIND, ARES WAS mentally pacing. Going frantic and pulling out every mental drawer his mind had, releasing every depressing emotion he had. He refused to let this happen once more, especially since the first time had been one of the worst moments in his life anyway. Standing up close to Sutton, dark eyes watched as she grew defensive, her arms folding in front of her and her expression changing. "I do." He confirmed, refusing to drop the eye contact with her. "Sebastian Lestrange. He's three also. But turning four soon."
Ares wasn't expecting the change in Sutton, but given his anger and denial to admit he also had a daughter, the Lestrange knew it was bound to happen. Her insult didn't phase him, especially since he knew it was true, but settling down had never been Ares' plan. Ever. How could someone like him be happy with anyone or anything anyway? "No one told you to be picky did they?" He responded with venom, eyes narrowing as he looked at her. "We just had multiple flings back then. I always avoided your father and you avoided my parents...Weren't we always careful?" Sutton stepped closer then and Ares stood his ground. He wasn't intimidated by her, no matter if she was angry or not.
He listened to Sutton's choices and let out a scoff, turning away from her to lift his arms and slap them down by his side. He was going insane. "I've barely lived and I'm already a father of two. So maybe option three would've been best. But no, you decide to come back into my life at a time I least expected it." He stepped closer to Sutton then, closing the gap between them completely and towering over her. "Where is she?" He asked, refusing to soften up so easily.

"well i did have some low standards back then, even for being picky." she spat back at him, her voice matching his with the venomous sting. she hadn't come here with the intention of exchanging insults with him but if he wanted to go down that road she'd gladly follow him there. "what's careful got to do with it? obviously something went wrong." she responded. he'd found out he had another child and the fact they'd been careful but still managed to make a child together wasn't an unusual story, especially for him.
"oh yes. option three. the one that would have left me cut off from everything and with an irresponsible teenager to help me. great choice." she said as she rolled her eyes at his back, not caring that he didn't agree with her reasoning for leaving. she'd done the best thing she could for her, no one else. then she'd done the best thing for their daughter. that's who mattered at the moment, not him and as much as it pained her, not herself. she watched him as he turned on his heel in a flash and closed the gap between them that he'd made.
she stood firm in her spot, her arms crossing against her chest, causing the shirt she was wearing to bunch and ride up a little higher than it had been before. "nowhere you'll find till i want you to." she said, her tone firm and her resolve absolute. "she deserves a father that'll actually want her, not a flake with a mild curiosity. so until i know which one you are. she'll stay where she is." she didn't come out and say it but there was no way she'd give her child a father like either of them had had.

THE VENOM IN HER TONE was recognisable immediately but Ares didn't mind it at all. He had heard worst from others and most times his own tone was worse. If she had come to exchange insults with him, Ares would've planned his day accordingly, he didn't have any intention to let her leave without at least a few tears in her eyes. He wanted her to face the worst, the same way she was treating him for no apparent reason. "Did you maybe consider any other choice at least? Or maybe, I don't know, not have the kid? Make your life ten times easier?" Ares was barely out of his teen stage upon finding out about Sebastian, and was still barely an adult now, and now he had two children. Two.
As he towered over her, eyes darkening as he glared down at her, the Lestrange noticed as she refused to soften up, similarly to how he refused to also. "And why's that?" He firmly questioned, brow raising. "Afraid she'll find out her dad actually had no idea about her until she turned three? Similarly to what the mother of my son did to me?" The venom in his tone only grew worse while his eyes narrowed down at her. "A father that actually wants her?.." He repeated, chuckling at the choice of words. "How could I want her so suddenly if I'm only just discovering her? What is it with you women?"

her life easier? not for a second did she think the words coming out of ares' mouth were about her. she'd known that much about him that he came first, which wasn't something she'd be able to disagree with because in most cases that's how she was, it was her that came first, unless her daughter was involved. "my life easier?" she bit out a harsh laugh as she looked at him incredulously. "don't for a second try to convince me you're thinking about anyone other than yourself now. and right now you're thinking about what i could have done three years ago that would have made your life a hell of a lot easier today." she was able to ignore his comment about her not having had ash, after all many people had told her the same thing. she'd have been better of getting rid of her or offloading her the second she was born. she'd heard it all and the words didn't hold the same venom for her as they'd used to. "if you're going trying to hurt me, you'd better use a tactic that hasn't already been used."
their tempers were easily matched, their height not so much. she was glaring up at him and he was glaring down at her, the fire practically visible between them yet neither seemed like they'd be backing down anytime soon. "actually, i have every intention of telling her how she spent the first three years of her life. so, try again." she said, the levelness in her voice leaving not a lot of room to argue. well at least she thought. she'd never intended to hide the fact she'd left ares while pregnant from her daughter, she was a big believer in the telling the people you loved the truth, even though she'd hated her parents she'd always appreciated the truths they'd told. as horrible as some of them were it was always better than a lie.
she resisted, just, rolling her eyes when she heard the incredulous chuckle leave his mouth. again, he'd done some deducing in his head and again come up with what she knew was the wrong answer. "what is it with you? merlin, you had one woman show up with a kid and didn't think your lack of ability to think with your head before having a roll with anyone you slept with while you were a teenager, might have resulted in more than one of them having a kid?" she shook her head a little and lifted her chin slightly. "this is me giving you the chance to figure that out. before you stumbled out into the world and saw her or someone who knew us both was able to put two and two together and think they're a genius and tell you."

OF COURSE HE WAS ONLY thinking of himself. But did Ares want to admit it? Absolutely not. He tutted, avoiding her eyes and instead looking down at their feet before noticing she was in one of his shirts. It was only fair considering she had broken into his apartment and had a bath in his bathroom but for Merlin's sake, you'd think she'd come prepared with her own clothing. "I'm...Not trying to hurt you." He mumbled, losing the fight she had put up against him because of the look in her eyes. They had been through their own shit, Ares couldn't truly blame her, he didn't reach out nor consider her in his life at all.
With not a lot of room to argue against, Ares couldn't help but tut again and step back as she began to mouth off at him. "You think I was totally reckless as a teenager? You and I were always careful. Protection and the works. She...Was something else, a bad mistake that just happened one night." He retorted, his voice slightly louder than hers. "I might have been stupid, done things before thinking about them but never about that. I thought things would have changed after Sebastian and they did for me but..." He trailed off, sitting on the arm of his couch and dropping his head. "I just didn't think I'd be going through this again. Especially with someone who's time I enjoyed completely. Despite how little our time together was." He couldn't find the fight in him to argue with Sutton anymore, considering that she was completely right. "Does...She look like me?.."

just as quickly as the mood had turned tense, it relaxed again and she allowed her back to loosen just a little, there was always that coil that was ready to snap to defend her daughter but she let herself relax a little when he said he wasn't trying to hurt her. she'd known that, somewhere in the depths of her mind she'd known that. she let out a breath and took a step back from him, lifting her hand to run it through her hair, making it tumble back over her shoulders. she couldn't really fault him for that logic. they had been careful, ash had been a mistake at the time but sutton couldn't see her as one now. though she'd had three years of memories that backed that up, ares had five minutes of knowledge so she could cut him a little slack on that, but only a little.
she watched as he sunk onto the arm of his couch and now there was no reason to get defensive, he'd stopped hurling words at her for the moment and that made her feel a little easier about the situation, though she wasn't sure why. she'd been ready to maim or seriously hurt him a few moments before and now she actually felt a little sorry for him. it was more than a little confusing if she was being honest with herself. when he said he'd enjoyed their time completely she almost stamped her foot because of how frustrated it made her. frustrated because she'd gone from wanting to hurt him to wanting to feel sorry for him and that kind of switch didn't happen to her, not often.
she blew a breath up her face, blowing some stray hairs off her face and she sighed, tilting her head forward as she walked towards him. "yes, she looks like you. much to my dismay." she said as she rested her hands softly on his shoulders. "she is also loud, cocky and i'm sure there's a touch of arrogance in her already which i'm certain doesn't come from me." she said as she shifted her hands from his shoulders to the base of his neck.
