THERE WAS ALWAYS A MOMENT RIGHT BEFORE Nate opened his eyes where he forgot where he was. The disorientation making his mind foggy. He always pieced himself together before he breathed evenly, before he even opened his eyes. Where was he? Not in the Blishwick bed, that was for sure. He hated that prissy little bitch Jameson. Nessa had gotten them a pretty sweet gig for the summer, but it was beginning to wear away at his patience. She was always watching him like he was going to steal something. No, he was in someone else's bed. Claudia Watkin's silk sheets, if he remembered correctly.
He'd taken the opportunity to go over to her house, maybe a little too eagerly. A pilfered bottle of scotch tucked in to the waistband of his trackie bottoms. She lived in a pretty sweet part of town, and he maybe hated her a little bit when he'd seen it. But, what did he expect from a ballerina? He felt like a stain on the carpet standing in the hallway. But, the best way to even the playing field was to bed the dancer in her parent's house. There nothing really sweet or romantic about the way Claudia and Nate messed around. It was aggressive. He didn't know how to kiss her without it feeling like a fight.
Eventually, the booze was abandoned and once Nate had chased the sweat down the harsh line of Claudia's spine they'd laid there. Not cuddling, because Nate didn't cuddle. But, her soft sheets and the comfort of a luxury pillow had lulled him to sleep. He awoke slowly, with the overwhelming warmth of another person draped along one side of him. A leg caught around his knee, a hand right where his chest expanded to breathe. He doubted she'd meant it, they'd never been the lingering type. After all, he couldn't explain how his arm had ended up under her pillow, her hair tickling his neck and tangled in his fingers. His breath stuttered, nose scrunching as he opened one eye to see if she was awake.
Finding closed lids, with feathered lashes on soft pink cheeks, Nate gently blew across her face until her eyes began to flutter before he shut his own eyes again, not willing to wake up staring at each other like some corny romantic comedy. "Why'd you let me sleep?" He muttered hoarsely, lacking his usual accusation as it was rough with sleep and the lingering disorientation. She wasn't the trapping type. They'd both been caught unawares. He didn't like it, but he didn't move either. Still as stone, his heart beating violently somewhere in his chest.

Claudia had never before this summer spent time with any of her school friends outside of school. During the holidays she normally just focused on ballet and was at the studio everyday, either teaching, rehearsing, or taking classes of her own. But this summer was different, she had let herself get distracted during the last school year and her technique and focus had shifted. She almost wondered if she had let herself fall. But that was a thought for another time.
When she first felt movement in the bed, her brain assumed it was Simon. She hadn’t had a sleep over with anyone but Simon and she certainly hadn’t planned on Nate staying the night. But when she woke up and saw his sharp jawline, she still smiled, giving a little stretch as he woke up as well and asked why she let him fall asleep here. “I didn’t do it on purpose.” she yawned, “I probably fell asleep before you did.” she smirked. She hadn’t realized how close they had gotten in the night. Her leg was draped over his legs and her hand was still laying on his chest. She couldn’t say that the two of them had ever been this close before for this long, but he wasn’t jumping up from the contact, and she didn’t really want to either. “You’re not going to get in trouble for not going home last night, are you?” she asked. Not all parents were as non-caring as hers were when it came to overnight visitors of the opposite sex.

THE CAT LIKE STRETCH OF A BODY BESIDE NATE made him instinctively grip on to her. Soft, warm skin teasing along one side of him until he coughed a quiet groan and shook his head. Brain foggy and half way present, he lacked his usual bitter scorn. "Yeah," He scoffed, because he couldn't help himself. "Sure thing." And then he cast her a single look through hooded eyes, as if to accuse her of trapping him. In reality, Nate preferred to be in Claudia's bed than the Blishwick manor flat with its untouched furniture.
"Definitely not." Nate answered surely, pinching the skin between his eyes and massaging it until the sleepy fog began to clear. He stretched himself, instinctively pulling her closer to him as his toes curled and his muscles stiffened before loosening in to the mattress. "I think they'd prefer it, to be honest." And he laughed drily, hand dragging down his face as he yawned. He could have fallen asleep again, quite happily. Instead of entertaining that idea, he unhooked his arm from under Claudia's head and shifted up on to his elbows, staring down at her. "I'm usually more hassle than I'm worth." His smirk was a dry, cracked thing.

He teased her a little about having fallen asleep first, but she chose not to bite. They could go back and forth with who initiated the sleepover, but the truth was, they had both chosen to fall and stay asleep all night. He could have gotten out of bed the moment his eyes opened and escaped before she even realized that he had been there. But he didn’t. He stayed with her, and as he stretched, he pulled her closer. It was nice. He was warm. And she felt the release of chemicals making a smile stay on her face. “Well in that case you’re welcome to accidentally fall asleep here whenever you’d like.” she cooed. She drug her fingers across his chest lightly as he moved his arm from under her head and started to sit up. That wasn’t exactly what she wanted him to do, but she was in no possession to oppose him. “Getting up already?” she asked instead, casually, not wanting to come across as needy or attached. She wasn’t attached, she just liked the physical contact. Or at least that’s what she told herself.

NATE HAD COME TO LEARN THAT HOSPITALITY often had strings attached. So, when he was offered a cushy deal, most of the time he shirked away from it. This time, to keep up appearances, he smirked. A slow and lazy thing, drawing across his face deliberately. "You might regret that." He told her, knowing deep down she likely would, but making a joke of it nonetheless.
Sitting up, his bones cracked and ached. Cold from the loss of body heat. So he missed it, it was chemical reaction. Shimmying out from under the covers, Nate hopped over Claudia's body. Still naked as he searched for his boxers and tracksuit bottoms. "Gotta get back to reality some time." Nate shrugged, casting Claudia an almost reluctant look over his shoulder.
The sheets were loose around her bare shoulders, skin pink and familiar. There was a hickey purpling her collarbone where he'd left it. It wasn't an unwelcome sight. "If I don't go back they have to report me." He said, perhaps with a little too much honesty. "I'm a repeat offender." In for a penny, in for a pound, he decided. Smirking smugly. He pulled his boxers to his waist and bent his back, sighing at the satisfying crack it earned him.

Claudia giggled at his response when she said he was welcome to accidentally stay the night anytime, a part of her kind of liked the idea of a more regular sleepover buddy. It was getting tricky with Simon since his sister and her friend started asking more questions when they would see her there. It was worth it, but still just annoying. She liked Nate being here with her, in her space, her bed. It made it a lot more fun. And seeing the annoyed look on her brother's face was also a lot more fun than the looks Jessie gave her.
Then he was jumping up, climbing over her, and searching around the floor for his clothes. She couldn’t help but sit up slightly in protest, her hair cascaded over her shoulder and the rest fell behind her in the transition from being on her side to her new position. “What? Really? It’s still early…” she protested. He said he was a repeat offender and she rolled her eyes. “aren’t i worth breaking rules for?” she pouted.

SHE HAD A GOOD POINT, REALLY, AND TO ADMIT that he was tempted. Her hair, long and dark against her pale skin, fell around her shoulder. He was still half dressed, his track suit bottoms loose in hand as he groaned and bent down to kiss her again. Using his free hand to catch her chin as he leaned in to her, knee on the edge of the bed as he leaned in to it. That same hand releasing her chin to tangle in her hair as he pulled back.
"You're a band influence," He muttered in to her mouth, the kiss more of an answer than any words he might put forth. He thought of Nessa and that flyer that could break him free of the orphanage for a single summer. He only had to graduate and then he would be free. It made him pull his bottoms on, the waistband snapping against his skin. "You could convince me," He teased, flashing his teeth as he looked around in search of his shirt but didn't find it. "But, the place is pretty overcrowded right now, they're cracking down on stragglers." He pulled a hand from the back of his head to the front. "There's a pandemic don't you know?" He added sarcastically.

He called her a bad influence and leaned onto the bed to kiss her again. She giggled into his kiss and then bit her lip when he pulled back. “I like the sound of that.” she smirked. She was sure she was actually far from a bad influence on anyone. She may have been a bitch, but she was far from a bad girl. She was a ballerina and the daughter of wealthy and successful parents. She hadn’t even gotten drunk until this summer. The worst she had done was sleep around at school, but she wasn’t sure how uncommon that was among other students her age. Maybe she did get around more than the others, she didn’t really spend enough time with girls her age to ask to find out.
He dangled the idea of him staying in front of her, saying that she could convenience him, but he had to get back because they were cracking down on stragglers due to the pandemic. She rolled her eyes. “Stupid pandemic.” she muttered under her breath. She sat up as well, keeping the sheet wrapped around her chest as she watched him fumble around for his shirt. She was fairly certain that it had gotten kicked under the bed, but she wasn’t sure how helpful she was feeling at the moment. “Looking for something?” she asked, sweetly cocking her head to the side.

THE BASIS OF THEIR HOOK-UPS WAS PRETTY simple, Nate thought. Though Claudia wasn't typically a 'bad influence', he liked to think he made her feel like one. There was no fun in the law abiding, goody-goody veneer of a wealthy dancer. Apart from to look at, of course. Her answering smirk was all Nate needed as he pulled back with a quirk of his brows, tongue dashing over his bottom lip as he continued to dress lazily.
"They're overreacting." Nate rolled his eyes, shaking his head as he pulled up his zip and leaned over on one leg. Reaching forward to playfully tug on her sheet wrapped tight over her bare torso. "They've cracked down since they took in all the Ilvermorny rejects." Nate explained, not realising until he'd said it that it was perhaps too much. Nate guarded his origins like they were trade secrets. Preferring to maintain the appearance of a much more pristine, purer wizard than he actually was.
"I mean- it's whatever." Nate ruffled the hair at the back of his head, avoiding her eyes conspicuously. He looked around the room with a frown, suddenly consumed with the interest of finding his t-shirt. "Where's my top?" He reached for her again, twisting his fist around the sheet and daring her wordlessly. "Shall I go ask mummy?" Tongue in cheek as he grinned at her. "Is little Toby home?"
