Jessavette Dupont was a mess. Granted, she should have been fine. Her family made it home safely from the Quidditch Match, she went to the hospital to get her leg fixed. So everyone was healthy and safe, which should have been all that mattered, but it wasn't. Fin was gone. He hadn't returned from saving her family and Jess ached for him. She worried about what would be keeping him away from her. He loved her, she knew that. He'd proven it before they broke up, and again when he saved her life. So where was he? Part of her was convinced that something happened to him. Maybe Elaine found out he saved Jess and her family and got angry. But, if they were best friends she wouldn't hurt him, right? Or did she not care about her friends like most people did. Maybe he decided that being with Jess was too much of a hassle and decided to stay away. Maybe he got hurt or died after saving her family. All the scenarios ran through her mind constantly. Jess couldn't stop them. The fact of the matter was that Jess didn't know what happened to Fin, and the worry was eating her alive. The first week after he disappeared, Jess called in sick, staying at home so she could see Fin when he came back, but he didn't. He never showed up and eventually she had to go to work. She had to start living life again, pretending like nothing was wrong. She had to write and see friends and smile, though all she wanted to do was curl in a ball and cry. When she made it home, that was all she did. She searched the house, hoping that Fin came while she was out, then she moved to the couch and cried herself to sleep. @finley

June 24th, 2025 A few days after the Quidditch match Finley woke up in his apartment. He was given small pieces to hold onto. The feeling of Desiraes hand in his, a glimpse of an old friends smile... bits he couldn't fathom putting together. He sat up, gazing around the room in awe. Most of this wasn't familiar to him... but he had enough memories to know exactly what had happened. Someone had taken away his memories of some things. He hated not knowing what was missing, but he could tell that giant chunks of his life were gone. The odd thing was, all his stuff in the apartment was packed up and neatly placed beside his front door. He walked through his apartment slowly, running his finger over the back of the couch, the bed frame... then he punched a hole in the wall. Pulling his hand back, he rubbed his knuckles with his free hand and he knew... Jess was out there waiting for him. He remembered every thing about her, every inch, every smile, every tear. He sat on the bed, the memories overloading him. It was all Jess, nothing but Jess, but with missing pieces still cut all throughout. That made the tears seem heavier as he bent in half, pressing his palms into his eyes as he sobbed. He lost something, and he had the feeling, since all his bags were packed... the thing he had lost was the same thing he wanted gone. He took almost a week, maybe a little more, finding a place out of the country, moving his things there, taking necessary precautions and protection spells. Then it was time to go back for Jess... or, at least, tell her he was leaving. It was late at night, around ten, when he stood in front of her door. He took a deep breath. He was wearing a suit, oddly enough. It felt like the right thing to do. He raised his hand and knocked on the door, but didn't wait. He gently pushed it open. @jessavette

Jess was finally coming to the conclusion that Fin wasn't coming back, which meant he was gone. He'd promised to come back to her, so since he hadn't, it meant he couldn't. She would probably never see him again. The knowledge tore at her. She was entirely convinced that this was her fault. After all, if it wasn't for her he wouldn't have betrayed Elaine, right? Without her he would be healthy and fine ... and on the wrong side. That didn't matter though. Not now that he was gone. Suddenly she was seeing how stupid it all was, how she should have listened to him and given him a chance. Instead of breaking up with him and pushing him out of her life the second she learned about Elaine, she should have worked with him. Together they could have figured something out. And, even if that ended the same way this had, at least she would have had more memories of him. As it was, she spent her afternoons curled up on the couch thinking about all the time they spent together. Every date and outing, every meal they had together, whether he cooked it or not. It all ran through her head, along with the deep regret she felt at losing him. She was on her couch, lost in memories of Fin, when there was a knock on the door. Jess thought about getting up, but didn't. She raised her wand to open the door, but she heard it open on its own. Great. Well, if someone was here to help her, she wasn't strong enough to stop them right now. She was too busy grieving. If someone was here to kill her ... at least she'd be with Fin again. Tears gently fell from her cheeks. She hardly noticed them anymore. "What do you-" She froze, eyes widening as she realized the familiar figure. Was she making this up? "Fin?" she whispered, not daring to stand up and break through the illusion. He couldn't actually be here, could he? Her lips trembled as she waited, trying desperately not to hope that it really was Fin, though she couldn't help it. She wanted him to be here. She wanted another chance. @finley

As he pushed the door open he took two slow steps inside and then stopped at the sight of her. She just sat there... she just let anyone in there? He mild moment of panic and fear he felt at her decision making faded quickly. Then she spoke and saw him, whispering his name. She looked terrible, worse than he'd ever seen her. And crying. Definitely crying. He moved forward quickly then, so fast that he was on his knees beside the couch before she'd barely even have time to blink. "Jess, are you hurt?" he asked, assessing her quickly with his eyes but keeping his hands to himself. Even though she was so close to him he knew that he had done wrong and been gone for over a week and that things were awful. She probably didn't even want him here but that didn't matter, he wasn't leaving without telling her everything she needed to hear. "Jess, I'm sorry. They found me at the Quidditch match and..." he didn't tell he Elaine was alive, though. He owed his best friend - former, best friend - that much. "They tried to kill me and I know, I know that's not a good excuse for me not contacting you... I just..." he waited. @jessavette

It was Fin. Jess could hardly believe that he was actually walking toward her, that he was here. But, she saw the worry on his face when he was suddenly by her side. "Fin," she breathed again, reaching up to touch his cheek. He was here, alive! Only actually being able to touch him made her believe it was him. But ... could she believe that, with magic all around her? "I'm fine" Physically, at least. Her leg had been an easy fix at Mungo's. It was her mental state which was off, which was why she had to ask, "How do I know it's really you?" Her lower lip trembled nervously. If it wasn't him, she would break even more. She needed him here with her, needed to know he was alive. Needed the opportunity to beg him to give her another chance. She shook her head at his apology, not wanting to hear it. She just wanted to be with him. If this was really him, then they could talk about it all. "Y-you're really alive?" she whispered. "I thought you ... I thought I'd never see you again." Jess closed her eyes, turning from him slightly as she tried in vain to hide her weakness from him. Would he still love her, knowing that she'd given up when she thought he was gone? @finley

She touched his cheek and he felt every ounce of any self control he had just vanish. He reached a hand out to take her other hand and placed his free hand on her knee. She said she was fine, which instantly brought relief, and asked how she could really know it was him. His eyes started to sting at that. "You are the only person I've ever introduced to my friend Ben. When we went to Dublin we stayed at his house and..." he smiled and his voice cracked a little as he squeezed her hand, "we went on a drive and I showed you the roof of my parents house," a slight choking sob, "and I've never shown anyone that before, and they hurt me but you never did and I hurt you-" he paused, trying to gather his voice so it wasn't so shaky and broken. "I'm alive," he whispered, "I'm only alive because I love you and... I loved her too, she was my best friend," he couldn't say Elaine's name. Jess turned from him and he lifted slightly raising one knee off the ground to flatten his foot so he was on one bended knee. "I love you more than anything in the world, Jess. You are my family now."@jessavette (Woof, Elaine Lyra Dupree, that last line hurt)

He was touching her and all Jess wanted to do was melt into him, but she couldn't. Not until she knew ... it was him. Otherwise, she was just opening herself up for more pain. He started to answer her question and Jess began to smile. "I still haven't told anyone about that trip," she whispered. It was such a special memory to her, getting to know Fin like that, getting to see the vulnerable parts of him. She started shaking her head as he cried and said that he hurt her. "No, no stop," she whispered, squeezing his hand to try and get his attention. "Fin," she started, but he wasn't done. He said he was alive because he loved Jess. He talked about his best friend and she froze. Elaine. Then it was about Jess again. "I love you," she breathed. "More than anything. I just want to be with you. Please don't leave me again, Fin. I couldn't handle it if you did." She really couldn't. She needed him here, with her. Or wherever, as long as the two of them were together. "I want to be your family and I want you to be mine," she told him, meeting his eyes before she leaned in and kissed him, hoping that he would understand everything through her kiss. @finley

He barely registered her trying to interrupt him as he went on his tangent, his emotions getting the best of him again and again. She said she loved him too, that she didn't want him to leave. That she couldn't handle it. He nodded as she spoke, agreeing with every single word. When her eyes met him he started to lean forward and so did she, kissing him. He cried as they kissed, his lips shaking against hers at first until he was able to steady his breathing and relax into the passionate connection without being afraid. he released her hand and lifted both hands to either side of her jawline, holding her head steady like it was the most precious, breakable thing in the universe. After a moment he pulled back, pressing his forehead against hers. "I have to leave and... I want you to come with me," he kept his eyes shut, "she said I had to leave and never come back and I'm going to do it," he pulled back enough to look in her eyes, eyes still on either side of her face, "we can go through Ireland, travel, you can stay in contact with your family, they can visit us, but I can't stay here," he swallowed hard, his eyes searching hers for any sign of doubt. his voice dropped to a whisper, "we could get married somewhere in the mountains and have our own family," his eyes were pleading now, "come with me."@jessavette

He was crying as they kissed, but so was she. Jess didn't care. All she cared about was the Fin was with her now. He was with her and he loved her and ... he chose her. That was a miracle in and of itself, wasn't it. She closed her eyes when he broke the kiss, leaning forward so their foreheads were touching. Her eyes popped open when he said he had to leave and wanted Jess to come with him. Questions sprung to her mouth, but he was still talking so she waited. Her eyes searched his and Jess' mind was going a million miles a minute, but it didn't take her more than a second to know what her answer was. "Yes. Yes, I'll come with you. Of course," she answered almost instantly. "We ... we'd never come back even passing through?" she asked. Then something he'd said registered. "You want to marry me?" A smile started to grow on her face. She'd leave everything for him. There was no question of that, especially since it seemed like she was about to get everything she'd ever wanted. @finley

She agreed, quicker than he thought she would. She asked if they'd ever come back, then quickly asked for clarification on the marriage thing... her smile growing. "Of course I do," he said softly, brushing a thumb against her soft cheekbone. "As for coming back... there are ways it could work with potions and things of the like but... for me it's definitely a long time from now... her crew might leave you alone, but I'm not sure I want to risk it," he suggested. "We can work out the details when some time has passed and everything but for now I just want you and... I know that's a lot to ask," he finally moved to stand, sliding his hands into hers in the attempt to gently lead her to stand with him. "I promise I'll take care of you every minute of every day, there's nothing between us now," he said, squeezing her hands. @jessavette

His answer was everything she could have wanted. 'Of course', like there wasn't any other way it could be. Like it was what he always wanted. "Well, I'm not sure if that actually counts as a proposal, you know," she teased, unable to help it. She leaned into his hand, nodding as he explained how he didn't feel comfortable coming back for a while, adding that he just wanted her. She sighed and took a deep breath as she moved to stand with him. "Fin, when I thought you weren't coming back, that I'd lost you forever, I was a mess." She smiled a little, "Both times." She met his eyes. "I think you and I are in the same boat, because really, I just want you too." He promised to take care of her and that there wasn't anything between them. "No more secrets," she whispered, swallowing a little nervously. She didn't want any more. She just wanted to be with him. @finley

She said it didn't count as a proposal and, shocker, that managed to get a smile out of him. As they stood she said she was a mess, both times that she lost him. That thought made him ache in places he didn't even know existed, but he let her continue. She whispered and he nodded, "no more secrets," he agreed. He leaned down to kiss her softly, squeezing both of her hands in his as if doing so could help him draw all the sunshine out of her to share between the two of them. She pulled back, then cleared his throat. "I... okay, hold on," he closed his eyes tightly. He never thought that he'd get a happy ending. His mother had never written him one in her absurd stories that starred Fin as the main character either. It was always tragedy. Lost loves, fighting demons, things of that nature. Now he had his chance to prove to himself and to his mother that he was in control of his own story, no one else. Maybe that was why he had let Elaine control his life for so long. He was used to someone else calling the shots, even if he had his own wonderful life on the side like he did in Ireland and like he did here with Jess. Well, Jess was it now. No more side story. He opened his eyes, "marry me?"@jessavette

Oh his smile! Jess would give anything to see his smile. She knew it wasn't easy for most people to get him to smile, but for her it just seemed to happen naturally. Just another piece of evidence that they belonged together. Her soft smile turned into a grin when he promised there weren't any more secrets. She exhaled in a laugh right before he kissed her. Jess closed her eyes and just let herself feel. For the past week, well for the past few months really, she'd convinced herself that she would never be truly happy, that it wasn't in the cards for her. Right now, Fin proved her wrong. She could be happy, with him. He ended the kiss, and asked her to hold on. Jess whispered "Of course." She didn't know what Fin was doing, but she was more than willing to give him all the time he needed. He asked her to marry him and she beamed. "Yes, yes yes!" She pulled her hands out of his and threw her arms around his shoulders in a tight hug. They were going to get their happy ending. @finley

It was easy to cry when she hugged him, he had been doing that a lot lately. The scars left by his best friend would be burning through his veins until the end of time, but every day with Jess he healed a little more. He couldn't help thinking, while he held her in his arms, that Elaine could be happy with them. That the three of them could build a life together somewhere, that Jess would learn to love and accept the beautiful parts of Elaine just like he did... He squeezed Jess a little tighter, every memory with her rushing through his head, bursting through the dark corners of his thoughts like a beacon. "I love you, Jess. I love you, I love you, I love you," he lost track of how many times he said it while the crying turned into sobs and the sobs turned into laughter and the laughter turned into packing their things, making plans, disappearing into the universe with a gigantic world ahead of them full of possibilities. He could see it, an idea. A life with endless smiles, a garden, comfort when the memories were too much, kids, trees and mountains, exploration and sunlight. But in all of this, all the visions of what was to come, there was one thing that was constant. Jessavette Yvanne Dupont. @jessavette (THE END aaaaand that's a wrap on Fin <3 D,
