Chrissy didn’t seem extremely interested in doing a lot of back to school shopping. Lee couldn’t really blame her. She was a simple kid, she knew, and she didn’t need or want a lot that she didn’t already have. Lee used to love shopping when she was young. And she herself took every opportunity to spend money and buy things that she wanted even if she didn’t need them. However, she knew that she and Chrissy were raised with entirely opposite mindsets. And Lee had eventually grown out of her Beverly Hills Brat stage. They gathered the ink pots and paid for their loot at the register. Lee took the bag and threw it over her arm as they walked out of the store. “I guess that’s it then - on to the pet store?” Lee asked.

July 2025 It was still strange for Chrissy to think about how she actually had money to spend on things if she wanted to spend it, but she was so used to making do with what she had that she didn't really feel a need to go overboard. Most of her school supplies were in a good enough condition that she could still use them without any problems—or criticism from her peers for not having whatever the latest and greatest thing was. It was enough to know that she had the resources to buy things if and when she was in need of them, instead of having to be so thrifty all the time.
Lee didn't give her a hard time about it, though. They got what they needed, paid for it, and went on their way again. When Lee asked if it was time to go to the pet store, Chrissy paused.
"Lee," she hesitated, "are you really sure that you want to get me a pet?" She just wanted to make sure. "Obviously, I'll take care of it and everything. It's my responsibility, but…"

Chrissy asked again if Lee was sure that she wanted to get Chrissy a pet and Lee nodded, but she looked down at the girl, wondering if she was starting to get cold feet at the idea of getting an animal. It was a big responsibility, but Lee believed that Chrissy could handle it. “I think so. But you’re right, it would be your responsibility, so it’s up to you. And if you’re not sure, we could at least go look and see if anyone catches your eye or peaks your interest.” she added, wanting to make sure Chrissy didn’t feel like an animal was being thrusted onto her. She wanted it to be a happy, exciting experience. Not a burden.

July 2025 Lee reassured her that she thought so. It would be her responsibility, she agreed, but they could at least go to the pet store and window-shop to see what they had. That sounded like a good idea to Chrissy, who didn't want to miss the opportunity to see what they had available. "Yeah," she told Lee. "Let's go look, at least?"
It didn't take long for them to arrive at Magical Menagerie, which was louder than Chrissy expected it to be. She flinched a little as she decided to step inside to get a better look at what was there. It was like the Hogwarts Owlery, she thought, except there were more than just owls there. It was all a bit much; she didn't know where to start, and the place smelled absolutely horrible. "Okay, um…" Chrissy looked to Lee in hesitation and then back at all of the creatures. There were some that she didn't think were actually allowed as pets at Hogwarts, so she could safely skip those.
Eventually, her eyes were drawn to a cage in a far corner with a little grey tabby cat in it, and it looked up so that its gaze met hers. "Awwww," Chrissy smiled, walking over to get a better look at the cat. "Oh," she cooed softly, "he's just a baby!"

Chrissy agreed to at least go look and they stepped into the craziness of the Magical Menagerie. The place was packed wall to wall with crates and cages. Owls hung in suspended cages above them and various animal sounds filled the space. It almost broke her heart seeing all these creatures here, but it made it better that the shop was fairly packed with shoppers as well. Including themselves. Chrissy took her time at first, looking around and getting her bearings in the shop, and eventually she spotted a cage in the cat section that called to her, a little tabby kitten. Lee followed her towards the creature. “He’s cute.” Lee agreed. He was little, a true kitten. Maybe it would be nice for Chrissy to have a kitten, to get to be with the animal for its whole life. That would definitely provide some stability. “They’re more work when they’re young…” she warned, “but you’d also get to have him for his whole life and he’d be very bonded to you.” she added to balance it out. There was a lot that went into training a kitten that she didn’t want to sugar coat, but it was sweet. Lee had never had a kitten herself. Her family had kittens, but her parents took on the word involved, and she had taken a family cat with her to Hogwarts who was already 6 at the time. This would be new for everyone if Chrissy chose him.

July 2025 Maybe it was a little bit sappy of her, but Chrissy couldn't see herself leaving the kitten there in the shop. It wasn't just that the little cat was adorable—though he definitely was cute—but also because she understood what that was like, in a way. She was obviously human and not a cat (not even an Animagus), but she knew what it was like to be without a home to call her own.
Lee cautioned her that the kitten would be more work because he was so young still, though she added that that would also mean that they would end up more bonded with one another that way. Chrissy didn't mind the time commitment, and she knew that she would have all of the rest of the summer to spend with him before she would be taking him to Hogwarts with her. "I'll take care of him, Lee," she promised, her attention still on the little kitten.
She slid her hand between the bars of the tabby's cage as much as she could, and she smiled gently as the cat hesitated and then approached her with interest. Eventually, he came close enough that she was able to pet him. "He's so soft… Can you see if I'm allowed to take him out of his cage?"
