September 2025 Aside from the time that he had spent at Ilvermorny, Zeke had always gone back to his family and the non-magical life that he led outside of school. He had never really established whether his life as a whole was magical or non-magical, up until the point that he had chosen to go into Magical Interpol training after Hogwarts. He had always sort of known intrinsically that there would come a point where he would have to decide what the rest of his life was going to be like. As a wizard, there were certain parts of the non-magical world that just weren't meant for him. He knew that he would have some sort of advantage, in a way, and it didn't really feel fair. On the other hand, he was No-Maj-born, or Muggle-born; he would never know what it was like to live in a completely magical environment, because that wasn't his experience.
Even though he could go and buy potions and robes and this and that, there was also something nice about knowing that he could navigate the non-magical world, too. While some of his classmates looked like deer in headlights at the idea of even stepping beyond the Leaky Cauldron and into "Muggle London", it was just London to him. Likewise, he knew that he had to get used to the idea that the magical elements of his life weren't going away, especially not with the career path he had chosen for himself. He would need to be able to blend in more, to get inside the minds of people who were pure-blooded and whose worlds weren't larger than the distance from Diagon Alley to Hogsmeade.
Though he had had years of Potions classes, sitting down and making a potion outside of school wasn't really something that he had ever had to do. Back home, if he was sick or something, then he got whatever he needed from a drugstore. It wasn't as though he was sitting there and making his own cough syrup, so the idea of having to get ingredients for a potion was a little weird. (Besides, he had managed to avoid Hag's Fever, so it wasn't exactly on his priority list to go to an apothecary.)
Still, there were some things that non-magical remedies couldn't fix, and—assuming that some of the products actually had a decent shelf life—Zeke didn't see any harm in buying a couple of potions that would work for more common problems, just to have them on hand. A few antidotes couldn't cost too much, he hoped, and so he found himself in Slug & Jiggers, browsing the shop's selection. It was that sliver of time after most people's work hours at the Ministry but before the stores could close and inconvenience them, so there were some other customers around. Regardless, it wasn't like the place was packed to the rafters, so it could have been worse.

It was official – Sienna spent too much time alone at work. In hindsight, she supposed that she’d gotten herself into this situation. The work of a potioneer was largely individualistic, and there wasn’t much interaction with others involved unless one needed a consultation on a project. She’d known that from the start, but Potions was her passion and, well, Si thought there’d at least be the other potioneers to keep her company. But that wasn’t a sure bet, and so Sienna often found herself playing her music at an increasingly higher volume to fill the room with sound.
Sometimes Si came across a complicated potion that required time and effort and serious research, but most of her projects weren’t like that. Slug and Jigger’s had their popular products, like any other business, and most of Si’s time was devoted to simple potions like Cure for Boils or Wideye Potion. In other words, the type of potion she could make in her sleep. She’d crafted these brews hundreds of times, so she never needed to reference the books anymore or measure out the ingredients with instruments. If she couldn’t eyeball the amount of lionfish spines she needed, then she didn’t deserve her job.
But sometimes there was something interesting. A custom order for St. Mungo’s or the Ministry, and occasionally even an individual with an odd request. And when those didn’t come by often enough, Si kept herself busy with the development of Aware Wolf Potion – just because she and Jamie had gotten their first mention in the paper back in June didn’t mean the potion was done. Far from it; it still required extensive testing and tweaking until it was ready to hit the shelves.
In fact, that was why she was in the front of the store now. The place wasn’t empty, but it was getting closer to closing time and Si had just about finished brewing for the day. She certainly wouldn’t be ready to restock until tomorrow, so she was in the front of the store hunting for ingredients. She’d had a stroke of inspiration and was discreetly searching for the box of moonstones. The shopkeepers at least knew she was an employee and therefore not trying to shoplift. Sienna could swear she had left them on this shelf with the other gems, but the box was nowhere to be found. Si huffed in frustration and began to shuffle vials of various healing potions on the next stand over. “Don’t tell me someone bought the whole lot,” she mumbled to herself.

September 2025 Zeke browsed around for a little while after he had picked up the antidotes he was planning on purchasing—an Antidote to Common Poisons, an Antidote to Uncommon Poisons, and an Anti-Paralysis Potion, just to make sure he was covered. He didn't think that it would hurt to grab a few extras, considering that he was already there and wasn't going out of his way.
Now, the thought of actually consuming a bezoar was sort of disgusting, but he wasn't going to knock it if it did its job as an antidote in a pinch. If he were somehow poisoned, Zeke guessed that he wasn't going to care very much about the fact that a stone taken from the stomach of a goat would be the thing to save his life. Maybe that was morbid, but enough people had died in the previous months not to make him consider even the worst possible scenarios. (He had to thank his training for that, too, he supposed…)
"Bezoars…" Zeke muttered, trying to figure out where they were kept. Were they in with the other ingredients alphabetically? By type? He hadn't seen them in with the antidotes themselves, but maybe he'd just missed them. "Bezoars, bezoars…" Zeke knew that he must have missed them when the next label he saw was for moonstones. He wasn't there for a Draught of Peace, but that probably wouldn't have been a bad idea, either. But where were the bezoars?

As Sienna was already searching their inventory for moonstones, she took the time to reorganize some of the mismatched ingredients. She couldn’t be sure who exactly was responsible for restocking the shelves, but to a potioneer the distribution looked very random. Well, it was always going to be tricky – do you organize things by classification or by their relevant potions? Do all ingredients with healing properties belong together, even if one is a plant and the other a gemstone?
But she’d developed her own system over time in the backroom, and so Sienna adjusted some of the vials and boxes on the shelves while trying to draw as little attention as possible to herself. She still couldn’t find the moonstones, but the disorganization of the shelves was ultimately more distracting to her. Until she heard someone nearby muttering about bezoars. It was an uncommon ingredient, taught in school but barely used in any normal situation, so Si glanced around before identifying the source. She couldn’t help it – an involuntary laugh escaped her. The customer already had several potions in his hands, and a quick glance at their color and consistency revealed they were multiple different types of antidotes. Between that and his search for the bezoars – well, that was a very unusual combination. An extremely paranoid wizard, perhaps.
He was only a couple shelves away and easily the closest customer within speaking distance. Si finished reorganizing some of the gems and asked, “Did you make an enemy recently?” Struggling to keep the humor out of her tone, she motioned to the antidotes he had picked up already. “You seem to be preparing to be poisoned several times over.”

September 2025 "Did you make an enemy recently?" someone asked. Zeke assumed that he was the one being spoken to and looked over to see that the question had come from a young woman who appeared to be an employee of the apothecary. "You seem to be preparing to be poisoned several times over."
Zeke chuckled, not even stopping to think how strange it must have made him look to be walking around with just a bunch of antidotes and not Pepperup Potion or anything like that. It looked better than if he were walking around the store with a ton of darker potions or things that could be used as poisons, he guessed, so he didn't really consider that he must have looked a little neurotic.
He shook his head, trying to clear up the misunderstanding. "This? Nah," he laughed. "This is just for work stuff." While he supposed that he had made some enemies automatically from having joined Magical Interpol, Zeke knew that it wasn't his back specifically that had a target on it. Still, he was careful to avoid advertising what it was that he did out loud. "You wouldn't happen to know where the bezoars are…?"

The customer seemed agreeable to being spoken to (which was a gamble, sometimes people just wanted to mind their own business) so Sienna crossed the distance to stand by him. She looked at the potions he’d selected interestedly and could pick out some of the antidotes without looking at the labels. All potions she had brewed herself, of course, and fairly recently. Antidotes were trickier than your garden variety potion because they were so much more technical, and Si had needed to outline extensive notes to keep track of the proportions of ingredients she’d used. Slug and Jigger’s tried to stock all the common antidotes a wizard might need, but really it worked much better when it was tailored to a specific kind of poison.
Not that he would need to know that for ‘work stuff.’ But it wasn’t uncommon to have professionals come in for antidotes if they worked in the field a lot. “Work stuff, how mysterious,” Si said with a smile. “Would that be for the Ministry? We fill orders for Aurors sometimes. No, wait!” The man clearly had an American accent, and in fact Sienna had just spoken to a MACUSA Auror about a custom order just a few weeks ago. They asked for the most interesting potions sometimes, and Si loved a challenge. “American, so you’d be MACUSA,” Si guessed triumphantly. She meant it all in good fun, naturally, with a light tone and a consistently friendly smile on her face.
But anyway, he was asking about bezoars. Si took a quick glance at the shelf. “Not off the top of my head,” Si responded truthfully, scanning the shelf before turning back to the customer. “I usually work in the back. But let’s give it a shot! The moonstones have been hiding from me, so maybe I’ll have better luck with the bezoars…” They were a rarer ingredient, more expensive than the average item and therefore sold in smaller quantities. Those kinds of items were often all stored together in one place, where the shopkeepers could keep a closer eye and lower the chances of theft. A bezoar was much more expensive to replace than knotgrass, after all.

September 2025 "Work stuff, how mysterious," the girl working at the apothecary smiled at him. "Would that be for the Ministry? We fill orders for Aurors sometimes. No, wait!" Zeke watched her with interest. "American, so you’d be MACUSA."
Zeke laughed a little at how eager she was, although he didn't bother to correct her. She was right that he was American, and she was right that MACUSA was the magical government of the United States—the British Ministry of Magic's equivalent there—but she hadn't been exactly right about what he did. It was probably better to leave it at that, he thought, not that what he did was particularly sketchy, but he didn't go around advertising it.
As for those bezoars, she said that she didn't know off the top of her head. "I usually work in the back," she explained. "But let's give it a shot! The moonstones have been hiding from me, so maybe I'll have better luck with the bezoars…"
"Thanks," Zeke nodded. "I'm not keeping you from your work or anything, right?"

The customer asked if he was keeping her from anything, and Si thought back to her current projects in the backroom. She’d been meaning to start that batch of Restoration Potion, and those lionfish spines did need to be powdered, but that could wait. And the potions that were simmering on a flame only needed time and infrequent supervision. It was all the sorts of technical details a potioneer needed to concern themselves with, but not the average wizard. So Sienna only shrugged slightly and assured him, “Don’t worry about it!” Besides, it was exhausting to constantly watch potions on a flame. What was that saying about a watched cauldron…?
“Alright, bezoars…” Si walked a few shelves over closer to the back, rummaging through various boxes and vials. She couldn’t find the box of bezoars right away, but there were other interesting ingredients around. Sienna plucked out a small wrapped bundle of dittany – talk about a mighty useful potion ingredient. Dittany had powerful healing properties, and Sienna used it in just about everything she could. She was sure the customer had been following her, so she turned to bring it to his attention. “Not a bezoar, obviously, but dittany is handy to have in a pinch. Just the plant itself can be swallowed to heal minor wounds, and it’s even more powerful in a potion.” It seemed like just the right thing a Ministry employee in the field would want to have in case they couldn’t immediately access medical treatment. Si lightly tucked it into his arms among the antidotes and turned back to the shelf.
And that reminded Sienna – they sold batches of healing potions in standard packs for Aurors at times. That meant the remaining stock would go to the front of the store to be sold as surplus. “Ah, and if the dittany is here, some of the potions should be too. Wiggenweld, Blood-Restoration...” Si observed thoughtfully to herself as she bent down slightly to check out the lower shelves. She could see the tell-tale purple of the latter down below, although it was always less in-demand than Wiggenweld and Pepperup Potions...

September 2025 "Don’t worry about it!" the girl shrugged about potentially taking her away from other work that needed to be done, immediately jumping in to figure out where the bezoars were.
"Alright, bezoars…" She approached some shelves that Zeke hadn't thought to check for himself and began to look through all sorts of products to see if the bezoars happened to be there. Rather than a bezoar or two, what she pulled out was a plant that Zeke recognized as dittany. It might not have been an antidote, but it had healing properties, which the apothecary employee also mentioned. "Not a bezoar, obviously, but dittany is handy to have in a pinch. Just the plant itself can be swallowed to heal minor wounds, and it’s even more powerful in a potion," she explained, setting it in his arms along with the antidotes he'd already picked up.
Zeke wondered if maybe he would need a basket or something, but he nodded and thanked her quickly.
"Ah, and if the dittany is here, some of the potions should be too." At that thought, the girl bent down to check some of the lower shelves. "Wiggenweld, Blood-Restoration…" Neither sounded like bad ideas. He was going to end up with a whole apothecary of his own by the end of his shopping trip, he guessed, and he waited to see what else the employee found.

There was probably nowhere else in the world that could make Sienna feel as at home than an apothecary (except maybe Gus, but that was different). She was in her element here – surrounded by potions and the smell of fresh ingredients – and by now she could recognize most things by sight, be it measuring out ingredients or putting together a quick brew. Si wasn’t so interested in the customer service side of things – it got tiring fast having to help people find the same things – but there was something undeniably satisfying about knowing your way around an apothecary’s stores.
So Sienna probably had a satisfied smile on her face as she picked out the potions she’d named and delicately deposited them in the American Auror’s arms. She’d brewed every one of these and it was good to know they were going to such a worthy cause as law enforcement. Then her eye caught the Wideye Potion in another cabinet. “Wideye Potion is another good investment,” she informed the customer as she opened the cabinet to grab a small vial. “Well, it’s usually used by students during exams, but it’s also an antidote for the Draught of Living Death. And it helps with concussions.”
Sienna hesitated with the vial still in hand. “This one is cheaper if you buy the ingredients and brew it yourself.” That sort of honesty wasn’t exactly the right business spirit, but accessibility mattered a lot to Si and she hated the idea of a Ministry employee going without because of cost. That had been a big motivator in her quest to redesign the Wolfsbane Potion. “Do you have that sort of time on the job?”

September 2025 The girl working there added the other two potions to his growing collection, and Zeke was forced to readjust the items that he was carrying to avoid dropping any of them onto the floor of the shop.
"Wideye Potion is another good investment," she considered, grabbing a vial of it. "Well, it’s usually used by students during exams, but it’s also an antidote for the Draught of Living Death. And it helps with concussions."
While Zeke wasn't planning on ending up concussed, he knew that it wasn't exactly unlikely, either. Instead of immediately adding it to his arms like with the others, though, the apothecary employee paused. "This one is cheaper if you buy the ingredients and brew it yourself," she told him. "Do you have that sort of time on the job?"
Zeke shook his head. He really didn't. "I'm in training," he explained to her with a slight smile to show that he wasn't frustrated with her or anything, "so, uh, not really." He didn't have time to sit around and wait for something to brew, unless he could start it before he left for the day and let it simmer while he was gone. "You, uh, wouldn't happen to have a basket or something for this stuff, though, would you?" he checked with her, nodding to the growing pile in his arms.

It was worth checking about the Wideye Potion, at any rate, even if he would just end up buying the vial. Sienna didn’t really know anything about how the Ministry or MACUSA operated (probably by design, honestly, they had their secrets for a reason) but she imagined you either had a full-time desk job or you were out in the field most of the time. So the Aurors probably didn’t have bucketloads of time for potioneering when they could just get their full stock from the apothecary.
The fact that the guy was in-training and not a full-fledged Auror made Si reevaluate his age to skew younger than she’d originally thought. He might have just been out of school, too, for all she knew. “Always something to worry about at work, huh?” she asked sympathetically. Si could relate – when there was an emergency at Slug and Jigger’s, it’s not like they could call someone else. She recalled the time that the leeches had escaped from the tank…that had been a terrible day.
And then he mentioned a basket for the pile of things in his arms and Si laughed a little, caught off-guard by how normal the question sounded. He had to be Muggle-born – wizards and witches who had grown up with magic didn’t think about small details like that. She would know…how many times had she grabbed her gloves to clean up a mess in the back before remembering she had a wand? “I can do you one better,” she responded to his question, sliding her wand out of her sleeve and casting a levitation charm. Sienna didn’t want to risk levitating everything at once, but she estimated that she’d gotten about half the vials and ingredients in his arms. Now he looked a little like a planet being orbited by the potions. “The wonders of magic, huh?”

September 2025 "Always something to worry about at work, huh?"
If only the apothecary employee knew how true that was, Zeke thought. There was always something, not that he hadn't known what he had signed up for with Magical Interpol after having planned to become an Auror for years. Part of his training was in knowing how to handle anything that came his way. With prisoners still on the loose from Azkaban, it probably should have been a necessity for everyone, he thought. Not only did he have to do the same sorts of things as an Auror; he also had to know how other countries' law enforcement agencies operated and how to navigate issues that arose in more than one country at a time.
Unfortunately, the one thing his training hadn't taught him was how to physically juggle potion vials, so Zeke hoped that there was, in fact, a basket or a bag or something like that that he could use for the items he hadn't yet purchased.
"I can do you one better," the girl working there told him, getting out her wand and enchanting the items to hover in a ring around him. It was a little weird, maybe, but it worked—and undoubtedly kept his hands free for even more products. "The wonders of magic, huh?"
"Yeah, that works, too," Zeke chuckled as he looked at the ring around him. He wouldn't have been able to grab his wand to do that on his own without having to set something down, so he appreciated the help. He thought that he looked almost like a solar system. Whatever worked, though; he wasn't picky. "As you can see," he quipped, "I haven't gotten to the 'literally juggling stuff' part of my training yet."

It wasn’t unusual to see customers of Slug and Jigger’s use a levitation charm while they did their shopping – apothecaries tended to freak some people out, and prove to be distasteful for others. At any rate, most wizards and witches tended not to make regular trips, and instead get everything they needed in one go. Still, the way every levitation was applied depended on the vision of the caster – and for Sienna, who had spent her life first at a Muggle school learning about things like the solar system before attending Astronomy classes at Beauxbatons, envisioning a planet and its moons was easy enough.
So she admired her work while managing to stifle any giggles at Mr. Auror-To-Be standing in the center of his own system. He made a quip about missing that part of his training, and Si gave a teasing smile as she answered, “Oh right, that must be next week, hm?” She gave a ‘tsk’ of mock disapproval as she shook her head. “What happens the day you track a criminal down to the circus? I guess he just gets away if you’re not prepared to juggle.” Charms had never been Sienna’s strong suit, as she had always preferred subjects like Potions or Herbology that required less use of a wand. But there were some spells that were dead useful and had saved her work in the back room more than once. Cleaning charms more than anything else, really.
Sienna kept her wand raised as she wondered out-loud, “I’ve always wondered where my potions go. Tell me the truth, do you actually take these out with you or are they gathering dust on a shelf somewhere?” she asked, tone teasing as she added the Wideye Potion to the other floating items.

September 2025 The apothecary employee was quick to quip that the juggling portion of his training must have been coming up the following week. "What happens the day you track a criminal down to the circus? I guess he just gets away if you’re not prepared to juggle." Zeke grinned, shaking his head. Maybe learning how to juggle wasn't that bad of an idea, he briefly considered, just in case he ever needed to do undercover work at a circus. It was probably a lot easier than trying to breathe fire or swallow swords or work with whatever trained creatures they used in magical circuses… His thoughts on that subject were short-lived, however, when the girl spoke again. "I’ve always wondered where my potions go. Tell me the truth," she said to him, "do you actually take these out with you or are they gathering dust on a shelf somewhere?" "I mean, uh, they don't just force-feed us poisons to see how we handle it or anything…" Zeke considered with a bit of a laugh. He didn't want to disappoint her, but the whole point was not to need antidotes. "It's not easy," he added, because he certainly had to work for it, "but it's not torture."Sienna Aurélie Linslee
