▲ The Bainbridge girl, for whatever reason, really seemed to feel like she was required to answer all of his rhetorical questions. While the effort had been noted by him, there really wasn’t a point for her to keep struggling for some sort of response when he didn’t expect one to begin with. It would have been one thing if she was able to turn it around to another question, like she had earlier, but that didn’t seem like it was going to happen this time. The simple answer to his question, had she decided to answer it, was that there was not a defense to non-Legilimency tactics without looking like a complete fool. He had seen first-hand what paranoid individuals looked like, and it never ended well. This was how witches and wizards ended up committing heinous crimes and wound up in Azkaban. Magic at higher levels wasn’t meant to be trifled with, and yet there were always those willing to push their limits further than the rest. Personally he was content with the amount of skill he had achieved both through Occlumency and Legilimency. There wasn’t much more for him to pursue without allowing someone to mentally attack him relentlessly, or vice-versa. He supposed the alternative would be to take doses of Veritaserum daily and to try and break free of its truth-telling power, though that seemed almost too easy for him now. In his brief moment of thought, the second of silence in the classroom was cracked by Katiya Krum interjecting again. He had half the mind to ignore her question, having already specifically asked her to raise her hand before jumping in. There were only a few rules he had outlined at the start of each year, and he thought he wouldn’t have to do that with the seventh years. Apparently he was wrong. “Obviously,” Blaise responded to her, almost a little too curtly for his own tastes. Had this been an underling at the Ministry, there would have been a lot more ferocity in his words. The Krum girl clearly knew that she needed to raise her hand in his class yet refused, but arguing with her over that would only serve to derail the class. “I believe I explained that already, Miss Krum. It appears your listening and raising your hand for questions are still on summer vacation.” A snort and burst of laughter from Lily Potter in the back of the room had Blaise shooting daggers at the redhead. She knew better, and that was why he had to deal with her again. “For those that weren’t paying attention, a trained Occlumens is going to know how to protect themselves from outside influence. Learning Occlumency is based on strengthening the mind and willpower. What you do with that, whether for your own personal mental strengthening or because it’s required for your career, is up to you. So, with that in mind, obviously some defense is better than none.” Though why the girl was insistent on higher levels of the magic was beyond him. Very few people even managed to scratch that level of mastery, and the examples he was giving were all theoretical at the end of the day. Waving his hand at the board, the piece of chalk he was using earlier to write with floated up and started jotting notes for Legilimency down, filling out what he had already put down. “I believe it was you, Miss Greyback, that gave the class a brief rundown on what Legilimency was at the start of class. Do you mind repeating that so everyone can hear it again?” Blaise made sure to flick his gaze back and forth between Potter and Krum, the former looking like she was possibly writing the notes down. It was sort of impossible to tell because of the distance, but it didn’t look like the doodling he had caught her doing the year before. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

September 4, 2025 After he had corrected Kat Krum and told off Lily Potter (again), Max found Professor Zabini calling upon her to provide the same explanation of Legilimency that she had given at the start of the lesson—before things had ended up derailed by question after question. There was a benefit to taking notes on everything, she considered, if only because it helped to keep her from losing track of where they were. Max looked up as she was addressed and set her quill aside quickly. "Oh, erm, right," she mentioned, gathering her thoughts. It probably would have been better if she had the ability to recall precisely what she had said, word for word, but she knew what she was talking about. She wasn't exactly concerned about getting the answer wrong, even though the professor had put her on the spot. "So, Legilimency is the use of magic to enter someone's mind at will, and, er, someone who practices Legilimency is called a Legilimens…"blaise leo zabini @katiya

September 4, 2025 Penelope breathed out a sigh of relief as Professor Zabini called upon Max Greyback to restate the explanation that she had given everyone earlier in the lesson. It was one thing for her not to have to stress over, and it made her feel a little bit less like Professor Zabini had chosen to single her out.
She listened to what Max repeated, hoping that focusing on her notes and not making eye contact with the professor would keep her from ending up put on the spot again. It wasn't a foolproof strategy; she had tried and failed at it before. There were enough people giving Professor Zabini grief, though, that there was always a chance that it would allow her to sink into the background until the class period was over.

she did refrain from rolling her eyes a little as professor zabini called her out for not raising her hand again. she did however smile at the sound of lily potter's laugh coming from behind her. as he went back to explaining and telling her that he'd already covered what she'd asked about she drew her book closer and started scribbling a few notes down about what he was saying. she did get the difference in her question and what he was explaining but she didn't think it wise to speak up about that in the moment. she was probably an annoyance away from loosing house points or detention and she wasn't itching for that so close to coming back to school after the holidays.
she listened to max explain what legilimency was at it's basic level, noticing that it was her and lily that seemed to draw his gaze rather than max, even though she was talking. she put her quill back into the pot of ink and folded her arms across the desk and leaned forward a little, putting effort into not asking more questions about things she wanted to have answered or was unsure about.

you say i'm falling behind can you read my mind? It was the beginning of seventh year, and Addy entered the classroom for a lesson that Professor Zabini had set up for students in her year. It was a subject she was interested in, though her Head of House had fairly high standards for them. But that was okay. Addy didn't mind when such a goal was set for her. She knew she could meet it. Her Professor had hardly had a chance to speak before he was already scolding Lily. Addy glanced behind her and saw the familiar red hair and wasn't surprised the disruption had come from her. She picked up the syllabus in front of her. She instinctively began to read it, though looking back up when Professor Zabini pulled a chalkboard forward and immediately asked if any of them were familiar with these topics. Addy raised her hand, but her classmate, Max, was called on instead. Begrudgingly she put her hand down--maybe she shouldn't be so surprised. Max had was a Prefect in her house, the badge that Addy had wanted so badly.
Right after Max had given her explanation of Occlumency, Kat immediately spoke about Legilimency, and Addy couldn't help but glance at Penelope next to her, knowing that Professor Zabini didn't often tolerate students speaking out of turn. Occlumency fascinated Addy personally, the ability to have that kind of self-control and discipline in everyday life and, if needed, in a precarious situation. Professor Zabini motioned, and the enchanted chalk wrote notes on the chalkboard while he clarified Legilimency and what Kat had said. Naturally, Addy had read up on these topics, but there was so much that was missed in a book--she figured anyway. So far, she didn't have any questions on the subject. She did but wanted to wait in case he was going to delve deeper into the details. However, instead of moving forward, Addy glanced behind her again when Professor Zabini called on Lily, who proceeded to ask Werewolf related questions to nobody's surprise, and they were answered rather quickly. It almost seemed commonplace for there to be werewolves at Hogwarts, and the questions seemed reasonable enough to Addy and honestly had not been a question that had crossed her mind until Lily had brought it up.
He asked once again if there were any further questions and Addy had none, so she waited patiently but then out of the corner of her eye, she saw Penelope had slowly raised her hand. Addy looked curiously at her friend. In the entirety of the seven years, they had known one another, she could count perhaps on one hand--maybe two how many times she had seen Penelope raise her hand in class. She was in Raphael's house, but their friendship seemed to comprise of all houses. Professor Zabini called on Penelope. Her question was concerning blocking specific effects of things like Veritaserum or the Imperius Curse. However, the question was treated as one that might have been obvious or that one would have to have a mastery to even think about fighting it off. Addy wondered how mental straining that would be for an individual. Then again, if they were a Master Occlumens, their mind would have been strong. She thought about her own swirling thoughts that had been distracting her lately. Maybe this would not be a bad idea to learn.
Addy glanced at Penelope, who seemed a bit discouraged after receiving the answer. She tried to give her a sympathetic look. Some of their Professors were a lot more straightforward than others. Her eyes shot over to a voice. Again Kat had almost interrupted Professor Zabini, and Addy couldn't stop her eye roll at the disruption. They were never going to get anywhere in the class hour with everybody speaking out of turn. Had the Professor not already been looking at Kat, Addy was almost tempted to kick her chair so she'd be quiet and they could move on. Professor Zabini's response only convinced Addy that he wasn't terribly happy with her constant interjecting at this point. Even Lily in the back of class had managed to settle down even raise her hand to ask a question, that is until she laughed at the Professor's next statement. Addy herself had a small grin on her face, and she looked at her friend next to her to see her reaction. It wasn't that hard, was it? To raise one's hand. Addy's parchment in front of her only had the few notes she'd written down from the chalkboard and some notes of her own as well. But they hadn't moved much farther than that.
Now they were moving on, and per the Professor's request, Max began to explain some basic facts about Legilimency. Addy knew this, but she noted it down with the rest of her notes. Addy placed her quill back in the inkpot and waited for the next part of the lesson but noted that his eyes seem to dart back to Lily. She glanced back quickly but then looked forward again, trying to look as eager as she could. This was her head of house, after all, and she didn't need to be on his bad side.

▲ The theoretical bits and pieces of Defense Against the Dark Arts class were an absolute snooze fest for Steve. He had been told prior to coming to Hogwarts that the class focused on spells and dark creatures, which were quite frankly way more interesting than discussing how to use brain magic to interfere or protect one’s mind. This was mostly because he couldn’t think of a reason why anyone would want to dig through his head – all he had were thoughts on baseball and a running list of which girls he found cute in each house. Strikeouts on all fronts as of late, but that was beside the point here and public knowledge for quite a few of them as well. Steve wasn’t the best about being quiet when it came to his feelings on the latter subject, so he didn’t really see how something like occlu-whatever could help him. Or if it would even work to begin with. The lesson was wavering back towards the legal-thingy now, and Steve had been so caught up in his own thoughts on the subject, that he hadn’t heard the professor ask if there were any more questions. Some girl was being asked to give a description of the legit-brain magic, and Steve was too busy realizing that he still had things that needed answering. He threw his hand up in the air wildly, which may have been the first time ever in his two years in the class (outside of discussions on vampires), and there was definitely a snort of excitement from next to him, as Lily tried to contain her constant bubble of laughter. “Yo Mr. Z, I’ve got a question about the occultmancy still,” Steve said loudly, drawing the laser-focused glare from the professor, who had previously been giving his desk partner a stare down. “My mom’s a vampire, right? And she can do this thing with her voice where sometimes it gets people mesmerized. Would something like that be easily blocked too?”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

▲ Blaise often wondered why some of the seventh years he currently had in this class were of NEWT level because there was a clear divide between those that had some semblance intellectual capabilities and a desire to learn, and those that were total screw-ups in all regards. Potter alone was bad enough as it was and he had definitely questioned McGonagall during their meeting on the girl on why he was to keep her in the NEWT class when she clearly couldn’t keep up with the work that was required for it. Even if he was teaching the same topics, there was no guarantee that she would be able to do it all again, and do it better at that. Students like Potter, and her current neighbor, Kolstad, were constant disruptions to his class and it made him question whether teaching was worth it. He also wanted to blame the previous professor for allowing these two idiots from getting as far as they had. Even though the half-vampire child had an outside tester give him his opportunity, they absolutely messed up by giving him a passing grade as well. The only topics he actually did well in were ones that surrounded vampires. So when Blaise saw the Kolstad boy’s arm shoot up after Greyback finished rehashing what Legilimency was, he dreaded to hear whatever drivel was about to come out of his mouth. And it was about as bad as expected, even with a semi-decent question layered underneath all of the stupidity. Blaise was fairly confident in his ability to cast memory erasure charms, his decade plus as an Obliviator ensuring that he was quite skilled in it, so he half-contemplated casting one on himself right then and there, in front of the entire class, in order to forget the part where Steve Kolstad called him ‘Mr. Z’ and then followed it up by butchering Occlumency at a level he didn’t know was feasibly possible. The word was on the damn chalkboard and they had been talking about it since the start of class! How could he not know it by now? Potter was red in the face from trying to hold herself back from barking out in laughter and all Blaise could do was stare at Kolstad. He couldn’t recall the last time he was caught off guard by something as mundane as this, and it took a moment for him to decide on whether he wanted to flay the boy instantly with an insult, or answer his question first and then do it. Blaise chose the latter. “I expect that your mother would have told you that a full vampires alluring voice is typically non-effective against adult magical folk, yes?” He watched as Kolstad nodded his head, grin plastered on his face as if he had just asked the greatest question ever. “Then the answer would be yes, Occlumency would be able to block it. But an average adult of our disposition would not necessarily require the ability. Most likely they could shrug it off on their own if they didn’t want to follow a vampire’s suggestion. Now, younger witches and wizards have the ability to be affected by such a thing, so if they theoretically knew how to use Occlumency, they could use it if they wanted to.” If he had simply listened to everything they had just finished discussing less than a minute earlier, he could have used context clues to put it all together, instead of forcing Blaise to stop what he was doing to come back around to it. Especially because he had asked if there were any more questions more than once since then. “And if you ever call me Mr. Z again, I’ll put in a recommendation to have you serve detention by running laps on the Quidditch Pitch in the middle of the day,” Blaise growled as he turned back around to the chalkboard to complete what he had been writing about Legilimency. “Does anyone else have any dying questions they wish to have answered before I continue on? Or can I finally move onto Legilimency?” MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

September 4, 2025 Any lingering doubts in Penelope's mind about the lesson were thankfully interrupted by Steve Kolstad's question for Professor Zabini—whom he called "Mr. Z."—about vampires and their voices. Penelope wasn't too sure what vampires had to do with anything; she didn't think they were actually all that relevant to the topic, but the sudden distraction definitely helped to lighten the mood in the classroom again. (Well, the mood had been lightened in the classroom for everyone but Professor Zabini, who, not too surprisingly, hadn't been too pleased with being called "Mr. Z.") Penelope, stifling a giggle with her hand as subtly as she could, didn't want to get yelled at for laughing, especially not after Professor Zabini threatened Steve with a detention in which he would have to run laps around the school Quidditch pitch in the middle of the day. Knowing that the man was completely serious about that, she didn't want to try her luck, but she glanced over in Addilyn's direction. How did she live with him as her Head of House? "Does anyone else have any dying questions they wish to have answered before I continue on?" Professor Zabini asked them all again. "Or can I finally move onto Legilimency?" Quickly, Penelope shook her head no. She didn't have any questions and pitied anyone who was left with any serious questions about Occlumency by that point. blaise leo zabini @katiya addilyn elara slater

Defense Against the Dark Arts had never been Lusie’s strong subject. She was much better at the more academic and less practical magics, but she had managed to scrape together an acceptable enough grade to continue taking it throughout the years. She was a hard worker and didn’t like to back down from the challenge. Though, this year, though it had only just started, she already found herself distracted and feeling behind in all of her subjects. Not due to the heaviness of the workload before her, or the complexity of the topics being brought up, but mostly because she had a lot more on her mind this year than ever. Her obsession with the circumstances regarding her brother's death had her in a state of constant distraction, but when Professor Zabini told the class that they would begin learning about Occlumency and Legilimency, Lusie found her attention instantly captivated. She never in her life felt like she had something to hide, but she was in the public eye, now in both worlds, maybe it would be good to learn a little more.
She listened as her peers went through their discourse about the topic with the professor, but she stayed mostly quiet herself. Lusie was never the student who asked questions in class, but she listened and took notes on everything that was said. If she had questions, she’d approach the subject with the professor during study hours. She was taught to approach ignorance and curiosity behind closed doors. That was probably why she was so independently academic even outside of her lessons. She never wanted to show ignorance.
Lusie stifled a little giggle as well when professor Zabini clapped back at Steve's comment, and she noticed Penelope sitting next to her do the same. Lusie also shook her head when he asked if there were any other questions and instead, tilted her head down, titling her notes for the switch of topic before turning her head back to the professor.

Penelope was determined not to create any more of a fuss in class than she already had, though it made her feel better that she probably wasn't going to be singled out for anything by the end of that lesson. Did she owe Lily Potter and Steve Kolstad? Probably, though she wasn't about to bring that up while Professor Zabini was lecturing. She also felt better that even Lusie Windsor had found the latest disruption to be amusing. The newer students who had come to Hogwarts the previous year—most of them Americans from Ilvermorny, though the Kolstads weren't—were relatively informal in comparison to those of them who had been at Hogwarts for a while, Penelope thought. It made for an interesting time, honestly, because most of them were far less interested in maintaining the same formalities to which the rest of them were accustomed. For example, they didn't really refer to their teachers as "Sir" or "Miss", and they tended to act like they were meant to be friends with the school staff. She hadn't seen anyone raise their hand yet, so that was probably good, but Penelope went ahead and got started preparing her notes for the next section of information. She didn't want to start writing anything too soon, even if she could theoretically vanish the ink afterwards, but she was hopeful that she would get to hear about Legilimency shortly. blaise leo zabini @lusie @katiya addilyn elara slater
