Classes were over, but the work wasn't anywhere near being done. He could get the work done in his office, but he fancied spending some time in a place that he was never aloud when he was a student. He sat near the fire in the staff room. Glasses on, and he worked on papers that he asked his students to turn in. Making sure they gave the correct answers and had the right information.
He read as he grabbed for a mug of a familiar drink, spiked with a potion to help him stay awake. He hadn't been sleeping well since his accident. Having work was good enough distraction. But after some time, he set the parchments aside and taking off the glasses, he rubbed his eyes giving a sigh.

It was sort of strange how Curse-Breaking seemed to be a funnel for people to end up teaching at Hogwarts, but Parvati supposed that she understood. It was difficult to remain a Curse-Breaker for very long, because the job was so dangerous, and the occupational hazards were probably greater than in most other lines of work. At the same time, she really couldn't see someone like Cas Karkaroff switching to working at Hogwarts, either.
Whatever the case, Hogwarts had two brand-new ex-Curse-Breaker hires in Renfri Selwyn and Jasper Yaxley, and it was the latter whom Parvati noticed when she entered the staffroom one day. He looked, at first, as though he were in the middle of something—grading students' work, probably. As Parvati neared, though, she saw that Jasper was rubbing his eyes and heard him sigh.
"Long day?" she asked him. That had a tendency to happen. Even if the students didn't intend to be, they could be draining sometimes.

Was getting a job at Hogwarts another form of hiding for Jasper? Probably. Maybe he wasn't quite ready to go back to the life he had before. He certainly had no idea where he was going to go now. So, he was here. Though, after being a Curse-Breaker, very little seemed to scare him.
"Long day?" He heard a woman say, looking up to see the Hogwarts counselor, Parvati Macmillan standing near. "I never realized how much work Professes had after the last bell" He remembered running for the quidditch pitch most years after school. Now he was grading papers. And that helped him not focus on what would happen tonight.

Jasper stated that he hadn't ever realized how much work the professors had after the last bell. She was fortunate that she wasn't technically a professor and didn't have to plan lessons or mark assignments, as most of her colleagues did, and she knew that it had to get tiresome. That wasn't to say that she didn't have work to do almost constantly when school was in session; she did, but it was usually meeting or following up with students in some capacity or another.
"Take a break if you need it," Parvati reminded him gently. It wasn't worth stressing over. "Professor McGonagall isn't going to sack you if you don't get everything marked tonight."

It seemed as though the work was never done. In a way, he liked it. But it was also very different from his life before. And he would be lying if he siad that he didn't miss those times. "Take a break if you need it," he gave a quick sharp laugh as she said this. She was right. At his last job, if you were in the middle of something, you really couldn't stop for a quick break. She continued and he smiled a thanks to the woman "That's true. Guess it's time for me to learn to slow down." he sat the papers aside and took another sip of his concocted drink.

Jasper laughed, at least, when she mentioned that he wasn't going to get fired from his position just because he hadn't managed to mark the students' work by a certain time. He didn't need to burn the candle at both ends. The work wouldn't disappear on him like leprechaun gold if he were to leave it for another time. "That's true," he told her. "Guess it's time for me to learn to slow down."
"It helps," Parvati smiled, sitting down in a chair near Jasper's. She had had to face that for herself over the summer. It wasn't always easy, but it was better to take a step back on one's own accord than to be forced to after burning out. Parvati didn't want to admit how close she had come to the latter. The explosion at the Quidditch finals had affected her considerably, and she had been lucky that it hadn't happened during the school term.
"Everything's going well, though?" she checked with him. "Your lessons and everything?"

"It helps," while Jasper had taken breaks, and enjoyed his time in the country he was in, he really didn't slow down very much. Work had become such a way of life. He entered the area he would be working in, and didn't leave until the work was done, he rarely had something else to do. Sometimes he did. He found ways to enjoy his life, but work was work.
"Everything's going well, though?" she checked with him. "Your lessons and everything?" He nodded "Well enough, guess all I can do is hope that they soak something up." His dreams still persisted, but he and resorted to wondering the halls on nights that he couldn't quite get back to sleep.

"Well enough," was Jasper's reply to her. "Guess all I can do is hope that they soak something up."
Parvati laughed lightly. "They will." She doubted that he was as inept at teaching as he believed himself to be. "Hopefully no one's been setting fire to anything accidentally," she added. There were occasional issues with so-called "bangs-and-smells magic", especially when it came to the younger students who were still learning how to refine their magical abilities. The older students, on the other hand, were more likely to see what they could get away with doing intentionally.

"They will." the woman assured. And Jasper knew that there had to be truth to that. He was one of those students. True, he had always been a good student, but even those in his grade whom he never thought would make it to NEWT classes did. "Hopefully no one's been setting fire to anything accidentally," He gave a laugh. It was true, some spells were more likely to back fire. Of cores, this all depended on the spell, the wand, and the caster. "As long as it's not feindfyre, I think we'll be safe" He laughed a little. Especially if something happened in his classroom, he knew that he was fast enough to put the fire out.

Mentioning (in jest) that—as long as it wasn't Fiendfyre that any of the students cast in a lesson—they were safe, Jasper laughed. While Fiendfyre was a real risk, it was highly unlikely to happen. Probability might not have been the best measure of things at Hogwarts, though; even the most unexpected things had a way of happening, though of course Parvati didn't want to jinx that.
"No thank you," Parvati replied, shaking her head and touching the nearest wooden surface quickly. "Touch wood. We really don't need any Fiendfyre." Barring Fiendfyre, there were a million and one things that could still go wrong at Hogwarts.
"There aren't any problems with their behavior or anything, are there?" she asked after that. "I know the Gryffindors are occasionally…" Well, she had been one, too, so she let her voice trail off a little and laughed. Rules weren't always something by which they abided.

Working as a curse breaker, brought a different perspective to the new teacher. Things that many would dream scary, and dangerous, he just considered part of his job. He mentioned Fiendfyre, and the other teacher seemed to really not want that to happen. "No, guess we don't" There seemed to be many things that were more likely, and could be better managed.
The conversation shifted to the students behaving. "There aren't any problems with their behavior or anything, are there?" He hadn't had many problems. Especially unforeseen. "I know the Gryffindors are occasionally…" Jasper couldn't help but laugh a bit. "Nothing I can't handle." He, himself, was a Slytherin, and had a trained response to the other house. Though, he always tried to keep things friendly, and from any low blows.

Jasper laughed a little when she mentioned that she knew how the Gryffindors could be. As a Gryffindor herself, it was perhaps self-deprecating, but a few of the stereotypes of their behavior did hold true. "Nothing I can't handle," he assured her, though.
"Let me know if there's any trouble," Parvati replied, half-smiling. She tried not to be the one to dock House points, if it could be helped, but some of the students did cross a line. "Or if there's anything else you need," she added. She wasn't just there for the students. "I know it isn't easy, switching careers."

House rivalries were healthy and good. It gave the students something to fight for, and competition was always good. Some students had the tendency to take things too far. He, himself was apart of this rivalry as a quidditch player for the Slytherin house. As a teacher, he did his best to be impartial to house, and just see the student. But each house did have their stereotype.
"Let me know if there's any trouble," she continued "Or if there's anything else you need," Knowing that the woman was the head of the Gryffindor house he nodded. "I'll be sure to do that" He knew that the woman was the school councilor, but he wasn't one to like to talk about his problems with others.
"I know it isn't easy, switching careers." He gave the woman a sweet smile. "In all honestly, I didn't see myself coming back here." But who could have predicted an accident?

Having spent years as a Hogwarts student dealing with Professor Snape's grudge against the Gryffindor students and obvious favoritism towards his own House, Parvati was careful not to get too deeply involved in House "politics", so to speak. Yes, she was Head of Gryffindor House and had a soft spot for the Gryffindor students on that basis, but she also knew how unfair it was to the students to judge them by their Houses.
In her capacity as the school counselor, too, she was aware that making snap judgements about the students—and even her own colleagues—wasn't the best way to go about things. Parvati kept in mind that not everyone would choose to take her up on the offer of having someone to whom they could do nothing but vent if they so desired, but she was there to listen.
She also understood what it was like not to have planned to return to Hogwarts years after having been a student. "I didn't plan to end up at Hogwarts, either," Parvati explained to Jasper. Her position had only been created because of the kidnappings a few years prior, decades too late to have been of much use to her or her schoolmates who had survived the war. She'd planned to keep working for Witch Weekly for the rest of her career, most probably; she hadn't had reason to think otherwise, until the opportunity had presented itself. "Now that I'm here again," she added, "I can't imagine being anywhere else."

It wasn't like Jasper thought he would be a curse breaker for the rest of his life. He knew that the career was damaging, and defiantly had a higher turn over rate than other jobs. But it still felt strange to be back at school now. Though, it was better than being back in his child hood home. That was the last place he would find himself. Family values wasn't something that he was taught growing up. Maybe his parents thought that if they taught about blood purity and elitism, it would force them together. But who knew.
The woman mentioned that she too, didn't think that she would end back up at this school. Some people couldn't wait to get out of school. Jasper didn't mind it. He'd never admit it, but there were plenty of times that he yearned for the nice spring afternoons after classes, pretending to study on the grounds with Bea, his girlfriend. "Now that I'm here again, I can't imagine being anywhere else."
He gave a chuckle. "Not sure if I'm there quite yet." Taking a sip of his drink he continued "Dose it ever feel weird wondering the halls at night?" He had taken to it, and sometimes he still felt like that young school boy, with that internal voice saying that he had better hurry to the Slytherin common room, and back up to bed.
