▲ She absolutely did remember Ilija. They were in different houses, of course, but there were a few faces and names she still recognized. Obviously with him being a Curse Breaker she still heard the name often enough. Plus it was hard not to know the Fortescues. They were maybe the second oldest family in Diagon Alley now. Taking the title from the Ollivanders would probably take a couple more centuries if they wanted it. As for Ilija’s sister, that had to mean it was Vasilia that was running it, who had previously been doing the day to day operations at the ice cream parlor. Nell didn’t find herself there too often anymore, but it would be nice to say hello, especially considering they were sort of acquaintances by virtue of their family names. “She had their shop running unbelievably efficiently from what I’ve heard,” Nell commented, “So I don’t doubt her new place will do well.” It made supporting the pub that much more important now. She didn’t know Vasilia’s circumstances for leaving the family business, but Nell could get behind wanting to branch out on her own, if that was the case. Old names were being brought up left and right, though she supposed that made sense with how many of their graduating class had decided to enter the same field of work. Being trained by Renfri sounded like it was probably difficult. Especially being a sibling of Rhys’s. There was no way her old classmate would take it easy on the poor girl. “Merlin, she got stuck in France because of the lockdown, didn’t she?” Nell realized, before letting out a groan of annoyance, “Poor girl. She’s probably loving it there.” Anywhere but London would be perfect for her right now. That was all she asked for. She loved work, but there was a limit to her patience, and she was starting to get tired of the monotony. At least having to go on supply trips had its own level of entertainment for her. Nell didn’t mean to laugh at his unfortunate circumstances in Egypt, but it was hard not to when it seemed like he actually liked going there, from her perspective. She let it go though, because she was more interested in Japan anyways. “Take me with you the next time you have to go,” she blurted out. For him to have been there a few times, that basically made him a seasoned tour guide. “Or if you know anyone that’s going once this travel ban is lifted.” It didn’t really matter to her who it was, but Rhys was preferred to some of the rag-tag curse breakers she had seen around. They weren’t all like her former classmates were. “I think you’ve earned a round or two on me,” she said as he followed her out of the post office. Her only complaint was that Horizont wasn't exactly a straightforward of a place. As it started to be occupied more and more by new shops, it had quickly become a confusing shopping district. Diagon and Knockturn had fairly practical layouts in comparison. “Just point me in the direction of the pub, because I don’t actually know where it is.”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

i need you to hear I need you to see Rhys nodded. Ilija had been in their year but a different house. There were so many of them that knew one another that way. In this day and age, being in Slytherin wasn’t such a factor in making friends anymore, just as he had been surprised to have made new friends when he’d arrived at Hogwarts. Obviously, he’d met Nell before becoming friends with Ilija, Hannah, or Renfri as they were in the same house, but it had been a shock that his name had not pushed away more people and especially an Ollivander. Of course, Nell would know Vasilia as their shops were not that far from one another—unlike Rhys, who could be pretty clueless at times about such details as he focused on his work and traveling. ”It seems to be. I used to stop by there before when I would come home. It's definitely different.” First off, the rarity of Rhys eating a meal rather than just drinking his entire caloric intake. It was a wonder he wasn’t still that scrawny boy from school.
Nell knew Renfri, and in Rhys’ mind, Renfri had somehow tricked the sorting hat into sorting her into the “nice” house. If he hadn’t witnessed Renfri smack Ilija upside the head a few times himself, he would have just thought that she was picking on him only. But she meant well, and after all the years they had been friends and worked together, he trusted her with Dahlia. Not that his sister wasn’t capable, but he’d already lost a sibling. ”The lockdown has paused a lot of the work at the bank, so until I can leave or somebody else pick up her training she’s stuck there.” But she was from France, and just as Rhys was from the UK they were both stuck “home” in a way. It was evident to Rhys that Nell wanted to go somewhere—anywhere, and he had the same feeling himself. This had been the longest time he’d spent at home in a long time, and while there had been positives to that, he was itching to leave.
Rhys gave her a look, minus one particularly nasty injury most of his had been quite silly. Just adding to the list of reasons he disliked taking trainees on jobs, it was usually their fault. ”I’m glad my misfortune is so amusing.” He said sarcastically. Had it been anyone that wasn’t a close friend, he would have responded differently, he was sure. But on the topic of traveling, she seemed interested in Japan, and Rhys himself had been looking to go back at some point, but his work schedule hadn’t allowed it yet. ”Sure. If I get a job there, I can go a few days early, so I don’t have to work right away.” It was commonplace for Cursebreakers to do so. Rhys used to practice that more often, though the previous year, he hadn’t wanted to relax since it only gave him time to think, and there was much he didn’t want to think about.
He wasn’t going to argue with someone willing to buy him a drink. From where they were standing, he looked around, but by this point, he knew very well where the place was. ”This way.” Rhys pointed to their left with a tilt of his head and began walking at a casual pace. ”Where do you usually travel to get wand materials?” Rhys as curiously, his knowledge was limited. Though he picked up bits of information here and there but nothing on the scale of a wandmaker.

▲ She knew what paused work was like. Her sister was probably on the verge of having an aneurism because the supply chains for wood and cores were so backed up. The only difference in their shops was that Veronica had a stock of wands that was nigh impossible to deplete. One of the many problems that came with wand making, unfortunately. Nell had contemplated asking her sister for the ‘rejects’ that were made, only because she knew that they were all the ones she had made during her exorbitantly long apprenticeship and her sister would never sell them because it wouldn’t stroke her ego. At the same time, she would never willingly give them up without something in return, and Nell didn’t have the capitol or the means to fork over in return. It was sort of a shame. The silver lining was that her furniture didn’t need magic imbued wood like the wands, so she had been able to stay afloat for the first six months until now. “Having the freedom to move during this would be nice. Not that I dislike being stuck, but I do miss being able to have the option to leave…”Rhys was basically an expert in Japan compared to herself. Having a few days to explore and travel with him would probably be the best way to go about it, aside from having an actual local as a tour guide. “Ultimately it would be for business for me as well, but there’s no reason the shop can’t be closed for longer than that,” she mused. “I doubt they’d let us visit the school there. Have you ever been?” She knew even less about Mahoutokoro, the Japanese school of magic, than she did about their wand making practices. Aside from a wand that had been brought into her a shop earlier in the year, there was very little on the entire practice of magic there. That only piqued her interest in it more. She followed Rhys’s lead as they walked towards the pub. His question about her wand materials was definitely a good one, since she typically kept her dealers hush-hush when people asked. The last thing she needed was competition from Veronica or other small time wandmakers trying to undercut her on prices. “The Black Forest is usually my main one. There are several protected groves hidden from muggles there, and most of the more popular woods are brought in from a dealer there. But every territory has someone that specially curates trees that contain magic. Typically herbologists that have a longstanding rapport with my family,” Nell explained. It had been difficult to explain to some of them at first, and even confusion on the delivery person’s part the first few months. Her sister had wound up with a few of her orders, and vice-versa. “But for cores, it’s mostly with magizoologists that happen to pick up from animals they’re working with. Dragon heartstring from Romania when a dragon dies, werewolf whiskers from the hotel…you know, that sort of thing. Most is expensive, but I’ve got connections to get things for cheap or free.” Like the werewolf whiskers that she had managed to snag. That was purely experimental, and it seemed to work. She didn’t want to outwardly advertise it, but she certainly had it available. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

i need you to hear I need you to see Rhys hadn’t thought too much about the lockdown’s effect on anybody else. He figured those that already worked and stayed in London were content with it all versus someone in his career where he typically traveled. Nowadays, he was catching up on paperwork from previous assignments or helping vet new recruits that happened to be local, which included some training that more about process and procedure than diving headfirst into a cursed tomb. It was exactly the opposite of what he wanted to be doing, mainly because it involved training—which he had gotten away with doing the least for a while. Now that he worked for some time and his old mentors retired, the burden was shifted and even more so now that Renfri was retired. ”I don’t think I’ve been home this long since the summer after we graduated.” Rhys admitted as he tried to think through the periods he’d been home. Even when Elias was in the Tournament, he’d still traveled back to work quite often.
”No, I haven’t. But I hadn’t thought to ask to see it. I don’t see why we wouldn't be able to.” Off the top of his head, he didn’t think there would be an issue. But, it was something he could verify easily. Still, it wasn’t as though Hogwarts had a visiting policy—at least without some invitation of some sort or special event. Naturally, he had picked up facts about the school which he found fascinating, and it seemed to be a far more disciplined place than Hogwarts was—or at least all the trouble he had gotten into would not have gone over well. Nell had witnessed firsthand Rhys’ short temper and constant detention out of all their friends. ”I can look into it. I wouldn’t mind seeing the school.” His natural curiosity was always there, yearning to learn and see new things.
As they walked, Rhys nodded his head as Nell answered his question. It made sense and answered a question that he had never thought to ask before now. Wands were vital to the Magical World, so he figured whatever network provided wandmakers with their supplies was vast, albeit competitive. ”Seems like it can get competitive?” Rhys could now spot the familiar door and sign for the Violet Hound—he wondered if Vasilia was working as it would be nice to say hello, but otherwise, he’d find her another time. ”There--just ahead.” He commented before returning to the topic of wands. Werewolf whiskers caught his attention. The hotel was somewhere he was very familiar with. Sometimes he forgot that whiskers or nails, among other things, were used in some wands. It never sat well with him, for obvious reasons, but as long as they weren’t from him, he supposed. Rhys found himself shaking his head slightly at the thought, not because he was offended by any means but it was still odd for him. ”You really can use just about anything as a core…”

▲ Just having the conversation about traveling after all of this was said and done with made her feel anxious. There had never been a point in time where she felt so constricted whilst simultaneously having the most freedom she had ever had before. It freaked her out. Even with things starting to be allowed now, and the ability to leave was becoming more commonplace, Nell knew picking and choosing where she wanted to go first for a vacation would be difficult. Knowing herself, she would tie it into a work trip, and seeing as she and Rhys had been discussing that, it also seemed the most likely to her at this point in time. Mahoutokoro, if it was even possible to visit in the first place, was quickly rising on that list though. Especially with her recent interest in their wand lore. “Considering how little is known, I wouldn’t be surprised if guests weren’t allowed,” she commented. “I don’t think I’ve ever met an alumni from there either. Isn’t that odd?” There were definitely Japanese witches and wizards aplenty, but wracking her brain didn’t bring up any specific conversations with anyone that had attended the school there. Traveling under the pretenses of research and self-study would probably get her close to the wandmakers, and maybe from there the school. She supposed it all depended on what she had to give in return. There weren’t too many Ollivander secrets left to share, since her family’s craft had been dissected and disseminated at great length by now. The books on Ollivander wand work lined her bookcase in her workshop, though she only cracked them open if she wanted inspiration outside of her normal work. In regards to her work and the process of gaining materials for her products, calling it competitive was almost an understatement. She had her people and sometimes those people dealt to other wandmakers as well. The actual stuff she got sent was typically of higher quality and in greater abundance than a lesser English wandmaker would probably get. But that was business. She was lucky enough to have her name attached to the order and that got her the best. “It can be. That’s why I’m trying to make my wands different from my sister’s and what Ollivanders normally produces. There’s no reason for me to be making a hundred wands with dragon heartstring for new students every year like she does.”Her mention of the werewolf whiskers drew a reaction from Rhys as the two of them approached the pub; she had forgotten in the moment that not all werewolves were as welcoming about that as the one she got the whiskers from was. “Pretty much…I get those from someone that’s willing to spare them, just so you know. I compensate them as well.” Nell didn’t want him thinking that she waltzed into the werewolf hotel and went searching through the rooms to find what she needed. That was extremely beneath her, and any materials that came from sentient creatures were either taken with the creature’s permission or following their death. She wasn’t like some wandmakers out there. She was still an Ollivander after all. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

i need you to hear I need you to see Visiting other schools was still rare for Cursebreakers but not unheard of. Typically the stuck to the dirty caves or dusty tombs rather than the halls full of school children and whatever institution. Not that Rhys wasn’t curious, but he could also ask his sister about Beauxbatons, and Elias had told him a little bit about Durmstrang. And with all his time in South America, he’d still never visited Castelobruxo. But Nell had a point, and he tried to think through all the people he’d ever worked with or met over the years. ”You know…I don’t think I have either.” Rhys noted, brow furrowed slightly in concentration. Maybe he would one day, but that day just hadn’t arrived. Knowing his luck so far, he was likely to meet a sibling from the Japanese school just as he had at least two other schools. Fenrir managed to travel and certainly outside the UK.
As Rhys did, Nell had a famous last name. However, famous for a more positive reason than his own. It seemed to be a theme in his life. Ilija was a Fortescue, Renfri a Selwyn, and Nell an Ollivander, and yet they’d all befriended someone with the last name that supposedly was supposed to make him some sort of pariah. For that, Rhys was eternally grateful, but he was sure it still came with its own pressures. Rhys had only met Nell’s sister on occasion, and she was…well, she was a character. There was that competitiveness and drive he’d seen in his friend since they met. ”Just like mine.” Rhys commented with a bit of grin. His own wand had a dragon heartstring core and hadn’t failed him yet, though he wondered when it would be his turn to damage his wand beyond repair during a job as some did.
Nell defended the werewolf comment, but there wasn’t a need. Maybe her older sister would do questionable things to retrieve the rarer wand cores, but Rhys knew Nell better than that. They approached the pub, and Rhys pulled open the door and held it open so Nell could pass. It wasn’t terribly crowded, but what he would expect in any case. ”I’m sure its not difficult to get the…pieces.” Rhys knew how many werewolves lived publicly now—the stigma was less than it had been in the past. ”Is it better than the typical cores?” Not that he wanted to linger on the topic, but he was curious. Nell had explained to him how the combination of wood and core could have different effects in school, though Rhys had mostly listened then. There was a small table near the entrance that Rhys walked toward that they could sit and have their drink.

▲ The hidden secrets of Mahoutokoro. That sounded like a great book title if she ever found the time to actually sit down and research the place, then put it into words. The idea of writing a book had crossed her mind a few times over the last few years, especially during her seemingly endless apprenticeship. At the time, all she knew was wandmaking. There weren’t too many books on the process as it was typically a closely guarded secret to anyone outside of the business aside from the basics about cores and wood types. The general public wasn’t aware of the inner workings surrounding core implants and tying off pieces to make the wands actually work correctly. Or how repairs are done. Most people had just come to accept things as they were, especially around here. No thanks to her family and their ability to create wands that simply worked better than most others out there. “You don’t still have the one you got before your first year, do you?” she asked him, sort of surprised that it wasn’t something she had thought to bring up before. Cursebreakers could be frequent fliers when it came to new wands. Maybe it was better just to have one that was easily replaceable, like a starter wand? They worked under all sorts of pressure since they were typically developed for learning students, they were cheap because of how often they broke, and still have quality wood and cores to them. So it did sort of make sense to her if Rhys was still swinging around his first wand. She knew the comment about werewolf whiskers for a core would draw his attention though. He asked if it was better than a typical core, and Nell shrugged. That was entirely up to the user and how the wand was made. “For transfiguration and non-verbal magic, yes. It would absolutely be the type of wand that someone who specializes in those sorts of things would want. I would never sell a wand with werewolf whiskers to a first year. That wouldn’t make any sense and probably wouldn’t help them much while trying to learn magic,” she explained as they entered the pub and took their seat. Wandmaking was so specific at times that it made her head hurt on occasion. And that was while knowing everything inside and out. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

i need you to hear I need you to see Rhys wondered if there was some special permission required to visit the other Magical schools and would they allow a Cursebreaker to do so. Perhaps there was something he could learn that was useful for his work in terms of counter-curses, defensive magic, or even culture. Mentally Rhys filed away the question to ask, or at least until he figured out who to ask at this point. Nell asked if he still had his original wand, and Rhys nodded his head. ”Somehow, I still do.” He wouldn’t mention the damage to his physical self he’d obtained over the years and the scars left behind, but somehow his wand had made it through it all. ”I guess I’m lucky, but I’m sure it’s a matter of time.” Naturally, he’d go to Nell. He trusted her as a long-time friend but also in her ability in her craft. Rhys took out his wand. He remembered when he had gotten it just over fourteen years ago.
Despite the slightly uncomfortable feeling, he listened as Nell explained the werewolf-related cores. He supposed if his wand did become damaged beyond repair on some work-related accident or even something to do with Heliopath, there was a chance a wand with that core would choose him. The thought made him uncomfortable still. Before Rhys could ask another question, a waitress walked over. She gave Rhys a knowing look, and he nodded—not that it was a surprise to any of his friends that he was a frequent flyer at pubs. ”Whiskey.” He responded when she asked for their orders. Rhys thought of his question again when Nell’s order was taken, and the waitress left. ”Are there common materials or cores for Cursebreakers?” Really in all his time working he’d never really thought about it, but since they were on the topic.

▲ “Could I see it?” she asked immediately, not really thinking how weird it was to ask her friend to pull his wand out in the middle of a pub. There were very few things she got excited about anymore, but looking at wands always rejuvenated her. It really shouldn’t have, it was just that anything other than her craftsmanship always interested her. Even if it was made by her dad or her grandfather. By far the best were her great-grandfather’s pieces, as Garrick had run the shop far longer than any of her other living relatives had. Her sister was getting up there now though, and would soon become the most tenured of the local wand shops for the modern age. “I could check to make sure it’s faring well, you know, that way it doesn’t go wonky on a job.” She really just wanted to see the thing and who had made it, already placing bets on it being from her dad. That seemed to be common for anyone in her age range, as he was pushing his own work fairly hard during his brief stint in the store. Nell ordered the same, knowing that if Rhys ordered it, it had to be of some quality. And she needed it after the headache of repairs that had been done. He then asked if there were common cores for Cursebreakers, and that had her brain immediately forgetting that it was hurting. “Any core that allows for even, unobstructed magic would work, in my opinion. The usual ones my family is known for, of course, so unicorn hair, dragon heartstring…phoenix feather.” The last being so incredibly hard to obtain these days. She only had two in stock currently, which wasn’t extremely out of the ordinary. A third had sold a few months earlier to a student that had snapped their wand during the summer break. The poor girl was distraught because she had purchased her previous one from Nell at Ollivanders, and didn’t want to go back to face the wrath of Veronica. Nell couldn’t blame her one bit. “I would die to get my hands on a box of Horned Serpent horns though,” she sighed as she leaned back in her seat to see if the drinks were on the way yet. “Supposedly they can warn their owners of danger. I’ve never seen one in person, but if I ever come across some, I’ll keep them on reserve for your lot.” MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

i need you to hear I need you to see ”Can you see my wand?” Rhys asked, confirming her request. He paused a moment. Wizards didn’t just whip out their wands on request all the time. He raised a curious eyebrow, realizing that Nell hadn’t realized what she’d asked exactly. ”Since you’re buying me a drink.” Though he frowned slightly as she continued speaking. ”I can assure you that it has never been wonky.” Rhys shook his head and grinned. By now, he knew Nell well enough to know what she was talking about and her natural curiosity for such things. Rhys reached for where his wand was stored. Somehow it had stayed intact all these years, with only light repair needed at times. Flipping it in his hand, he held onto the tip so Nell could grab the handle.
He listened intently after they ordered whiskey as she answered his question about wand cores. While he hoped that he’d never have to actually replace his wand, he still asked just in case. But, even if he had a particular combination in mind, the ‘wand chose the wizard’, so in the end, it was entirely up to him. ”That would be useful.” Rhys agreed. Such a wand would give them a leg up on their current dangerous assignments. ”Are they rare, or can I keep an eye out for them when I work?” Maybe it was something he could find in another country easily or check with some connections. Rhys wanted to ask more, but she was busy inspecting the blackthorn wood of his wand when the whiskey arrived.

▲ “Yes, your wand. Don’t be weird about it,” she said as she took hold of it when he finally offered the handle to her. There was obviously a double entendre to asking if she could see his wand, but this was her career and livelihood. She didn’t know if that was why Rhys was acting weird or if she had simply dealt with too many teenagers at Hogwarts cracking jokes about her knowing how to deal with wand tips, shafts, working with wood, and virtually any other word that could also be associated with male genitalia. Only the more creative ones got a laugh out of her anymore since she had heard the entire gambit. Adolescent boys were relentless too, so it had taken years for them to get off her back about it. Which was exactly the reason why she took her wandmaking tools to school and only practiced when the Slytherin common room had been empty or in her dorm. Wood shavings in her bed weren’t exactly off-putting to her. The wand that Rhys handed her was a blackthorn wood, and she could tell that it was dragon heartstring almost immediately. It was odd because she knew she had seen it on and off over the years, especially when they were at school. If anything, Rhys had done a good job keeping it from being blown up by traps inside pyramids or from cursed objects fighting back. Even more impressive was the wand, which had survived both the horrors of Hogwarts and a career in cursebreaking. “You’ve taken really good care of it,” she stated as she moved her hand around it, not feeling any blemishes in it. “Not that I thought you wouldn’t, but considering your work…good job.” Nell flipped her hand around it one more time, finding a groove hear the hilt that was signature to her father’s work. It was indistinguishable to the average person, but wandmakers knew how to tell who made what. All Ollivanders tended to have a variation on this, both her and Veronica having similar ways of cutting the wood that left their maker’s mark on the handle so that others would know who had created it. “And it’s definitely one of my dad’s better jobs too,” she added as she handed it back over to Rhys. With their drinks coming and their conversation dipping further into her dreams and aspirations of materials she hoped to one day have, Nell felt the weight of the past few days start to lift from her shoulders. Literally. Her horrible posture while repairing wands was bound to come back to bite her one of these days. Breaks like this at the end of the day were absolutely necessary in preventing any permanent damage from happening. Knowing herself way too well, if Rhys hadn’t stopped by she absolutely would have gone back into the workshop and continued working after dropping off the wands at the post office. He’d saved her from a sore neck the following morning for sure. And the whiskey they were about to be drinking helped a little bit too. [THE END] MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0
