@jasper the kids were all in bed, the lights of the castle had been extinguished and most sane people were curled up in their beds dreaming of better things. but some people, the ones who lacked any common sense were still wide awake. that's the category that he fell into and as it happened, it's the category one of his oldest friends fell into as well. he had a bottle of fire whiskey in one hand, a bag of mixed chocolates from honey dukes in the other and the dark halls behind him as he walked towards jasper's quarters.
he still couldn't quite believe that both of them were now teaching at hogwarts, after having worked as curse breakers for years, they'd ended up as teachers. it wasn't something meric had gotten his head around yet but he was getting there. he reached the door and leaned against the doorframe, tucking the bottle under one arm so he could raise his fist to knock loudly on the wooden door. "psssst!" he made the noise as he broke into something of a grin.

Nights were hard for Jasper. Ever since his accident, and coma, he had frequent night terrors, and that was just the tip of it. He wasn't one to complain, or to talk much about it. He had finished grading for the night and was relaxing in his chamber when he heard a loud nock, and a familiar voice. One of his oldest friends, who he, once again, worked with. His knocking was a welcomed surprise.
He opened the door to his quarters, to see Meric, a friend that he had made on the train before first year. The two had taken similar paths in life, and always seemed to be quite close. A smile came across his face as he saw the man, and the gifts he had brought. He opened the door wide, "Good to see you Meric. Come on in" He left the door open, grabbing out two glasses for the drink in his friends arm. "How's everything going?"

@jasper he grinned a little when the door was opened and he made sure to hold up the objects in his hand, wiggling them a little so the liquid sloshed and the chocolates rattled in their packet. he stepped inside the room when the door was opened wide and he set the chocolates down on the nearest table. had someone told him while he'd been at hogwarts that he'd be working with one of his oldest friends, he'd have thought they were nuts. because what were the chances of it actually happening? slim to none. but he was glad it had, with everything jasper had gone through in the last few years, meric thought working here would be good for him. when jasper pulled out the two glasses he popped the top on the bottle and raised it a little. "i'll be doing better in a minute." he said as he reached across to pour the drink into the glasses. "i went home for the first time in years.."

Jasper couldn't help but reciprocate his friends smile. as the other man shook the contents in his hands. It was thanks to Meric that Jasper got his job here at Hogwarts. Had he known when he was a student here, that he would one day be drinking with his oldest friend in a teachers room. He wouldn't have never believed it. "i'll be doing better in a minute." Jasper laughed "I'll toast to that" He also figured that he may sleep better tonight if he was a little on the tipsy side.
"i went home for the first time in years.." Home was a tough subject "Oh? How'd that go?" He said, hopping it had been better than what he figured was awaiting him if he ever returned to his childhood home. As he spoke, he sat at the table, and his cat hopped up on his legs.

@jasper it wouldn't take long, or many glasses for him to feel a little better about everything. it would help that the company was good and the conversation would be better, sometimes it was all a brain needed. a little alcohol and some time to talk about nothing and everything all at once. he raised his glass in a quick toast before he tipped the glass into his mouth and down the liquid at once. "already better." he said with a small grin as he poured some more drink into his glass.
"i saw gus for the first time since .. you know." he took a sip whiskey just as he said it and took a second to savour the taste. he hadn't seen gus since his suicide attempt and seeing him this trip home they'd come to blows as one would have expected but it had still left it's mark on him. "at least my father's house is still standing." he said with half a smile. that was the main thing, he'd seen his dad and that had gone well. it was nice to know that his relationship with his dad was slowly improving

The drinks helped to put Jasper's mind at ease, perhaps it would help him to get more sleep, he hoped. After the coma, he was left with a number of nightmares, that he was positive were resulting from the curse that still lingered. He hoped the warm fuzzy feeling that the liquid brought would help him out. After toasting, Jasper followed his friends example and downed the drink. "Few more like that, and hopefully I will be too." He said with a small hint of sarcasm. He moved his glass towards his friend who was already pouring himself some more.
He listened to his friend talk about visiting his family. Jasper looked sympathetically at the man. He knew that there were some issues there, as with most families. "You're braver than I my friend." He raised his second glass of amber liquid, moving it to his mouth once again. "I haven't seen anyone from my family in years now. Not entirely sure how long ago it's been." Did he miss them? Yes. Was he going to reach out to them now? Probably not. "Maybe we should talk about something nicer, like classes?" He half joked, chuckling at his words.

@jasper meric scoffed a little as jasper said he was braver than he was. he tossed back the second glass of whiskey and shook his head a little as he lowered the glass back to the table, swallowing and letting the liquid burn his throat a little. "my father is skillful at deception." he said with a slightly bitter laugh. "neither gus or i knew the other would be there." he couldn't fault his father for wanting him and gus to get along again but the surprise had been a little jarring and the brothers hadn't left each other's company on great terms. "family. while possible to live without them, it's impossible to forget about them." he said as he poured another glass of whiskey, though rather than down it in one go, this time he sipped it.
he laughed when jasper asked about talking about a nicer subject and brought up classes instead. "alright." he said as he settled back into the chair he was sitting in and he crossed one ankle over his knee, letting his glass rest against his knee. "tell me how on earth you keep third years interested. they've lost the wonder of first years and lack the desperation for decent grades in the later years. it's like they don't care about learning. they care more about passing notes, trying to make jokes and who can come up with the most smart alec answer. " he said as he leaned forward slightly. "tell me we weren't like that."

Jasper listened to his friend, drinking as he did. He only hoped that if he came across someone from his family, Meric would be just as willing to drink and listen to him. Both had issues with their family, and the man was right, it was impossible to forget them. "Isn't that the truth" He said, toasting to nothing and downing his glass. Letting the burn slide down.
Following his suggestion Meric asked about classes. Keeping third years invested wasn't easy. There were even a number of students in other years that seemed uninterested in charms. He laughed, filling his glass again and leaning back. "I've been thinking of creating a labyrinth were they have to use the spells we've gone over, sort of like an easier tomb. Bring the magic their learning more to the real world." He laughed again "Or at least what I know best." He sipped at his drink. "I wasn't aloud to be like that, remember? Don't know about you." With a smile, he teased his friend. When he was at school, he was expected to surpass his older siblings in every way, but even with his near perfect grades and exam letters, they always found something he did wrong, mostly his choice in company and his girlfriend.

@jasper meric listened to his friends idea about creating a labyrinth for the students to use magic in to try and get themselves out of and the idea intrigued him. it was a good one and he'd love to see it in action. "you know that sounds amazing." he said as he leaned forward a little. "you could give them 'cursed' objects they need to work out, except make it prizes instead of curses." he said with a chuckle. or something not pleasant but not a curse. there was nothing fun about getting caught by a curse from an object. they were often painful, dangerous and left scars that weren't always visible to the naked eye.
"maybe i could do some sort of scavenger hunt." he mulled over the thought as he leaned back and nursed his glass against his chest. "break the students into groups, give them a list of ingredients to find hidden about the grounds and then they need to work out what potion they make and make it .." he tapered off when he found himself getting a little to lost in the idea. "geez, lets lesson plan with alcohol again." he said as he downed the last of his glass. he chuckled a little when jasper mentioned he hadn't been allowed to goof off. "my parents didn't really have time to worry about me once i came here." he said as he rested his head back against the chair. "so i guess i could have."

Meric seemed excited about Jaspers idea. He had been thinking about it for a while, and working out what sort of traps and spells he could incorporate. Talking it over, it seemed as though his friend had some ideas as well. All, or course, were welcomed. "Wow, that's a great idea. Just need to figure out what kind of "prizes" I can get." He sipped the liquid as he pondered. "It's not hard to think of more prank like curses to put on objects, if their not careful, but still harmless." He could easily think of quite a few that he could use, but on what? "And they'd be perfectly safe, I was thinking of having the top of the maze for myself as a tiger, then I could watch over them and jump in when needed." It felt good to get his ideas out.
From that idea his friend thought of a scavenger hunt "That's a great idea, sounds like it would be fun too." Students rarely seemed to appreciate how much time and work teachers went through to make things interesting for them. sipping more of his drink, Jasper listened to Meric talk. "geez, lets lesson plan with alcohol again." Jasper laughed hard. "Better than grading with alcohol." He raised his glass as a way to toast the idea. It felt good to let loose, and relax. Jasper then tipped the glass down his thought, emptying the contents. "You could have gotten me into so much trouble, Mer." he chuckled.

@jasper there were so many things one could put into the 'cursed' objects for the class that jasper was planning. and they didn't have to all be good ones. "how about an automatic passing grade in one and then in another a three thousand word paper on the dangers of misappropriating charms and so on and so forth. they can learn that sometimes curses hurt?" he said with something of a wicked grin as he tipped the glass to his lips and took another drink. "please let me watch their faces when they can't figure out a curse and then tigger jumps down into the middle to help them solve it." he said with a short laugh. maybe it was the whiskey starting to take the edge of but it amused him. though it also helped his brain work, the maze idea was growing in his head and it was going off on a tangent. there was so many things he could do with it. make obstacles that could only be passed with the correct potion, correct ingredient or a correct answer.
"this is something that could work. let's not plan them on the same week though. can't have all the fun things at once." he said as he poured some more drink from the bottle into his glass. "oh i disagree. it's easier to write the same grade when the whiskey helps your pen." he was joking of course. he'd never grade anything while not in his right mind. it was too easy to give students the wrong idea or to misread something and tell them they were right when they were wrong. it had the potential to be a dangerous combination. "oh so what i'm hearing is. i was the good influence?" he said as he raised his glass a little to his friend.

Jasper laughed at his friends idea. It was a good one. And it was true, in a way. Not all cursed items were that bad, they were still cursed, but easy to undo, while others were tragically violent if one didn't take them seriously. "Not a bad idea, it can show that if you aren't careful, there can be detrimental consequences." As he worked through this idea, it was never a question as to where he would be observing form. The man nodded "Not sure they would jump. They'll all know that i'm there in that form, but i'm not opposed to you watching for some scares." He offered his friend, taking another sip of his drink.
Aymeric mentioned not having them going on during the same time and Jasper nodded. "Agreed. Seeing as we will most likely be helping the other with the maze. Apart from having too many fun things at once, it would mean more work for us." Jasper laughed, as if there was a joke about teachers working too much. He could feel the alcohol starting to work, and he was glad about that. It was times like these when he truly felt relaxed, which was a rare state for him as of late. Jasper finished his glass and waved his wand to enchant the bottle to pour him more, after his friend had set it down. "Guess it would make grading go by faster too." He laughed. Though it wouldn't guarantee that each student got the grade they had earned. But teachers had to have some fun with it, right?
The man smiled at his oldest school friend. "I thought It was the good influence, but seeing as you brought the drink, we can say it was you."

@jasper this was starting to sound like a solid lesson plan. obviously there were still kinks that needed to be worked out and it would take a while to plan all the curses and rewards and him his scavenger hunt and to put the ingredients together and also to make sure that whatever combinations the students could come up with wouldn't blow up in their faces. they had to be safe, while there could be some dangers they couldn't risk death or injury. it was more than a little frowned upon he'd been told.
"oh it makes grading a breeze." he joked. he hadn't actually done it yet though there were times when what he was reading caused him to pull his hair out when students either didn't care about what they were writing or just didn't grasp simple enough concepts. he knew they were learning but he didn't teach things that were beyond their skill level, at least he was sure he wasn't. "you just have to be careful that your grades don't slip as your vision goes." he said with a chuckle.
"oh it was totally me. i was so the good influence." he said as he leaned back in the chair and rested the half empty glass on his knee. they were making a decent dent in the bottle and he fully expected them to go through the rest of it before he either left or succumbed to the effects of the alcohol and fell asleep on jasper's couch. "why do i feel like we should be sitting in a camp underground with a campfire in front of us."

It was amazing what could be figured out through two friends and and a bottle of alcohol. their plan was far from perfect, but it felt like more than just an idea now. They would need to be sure that the ingenuity of the students wouldn't break their games, while ensuring the safety of the children. The trick was to create a mock dungeon, without the life threatening dangers that Jasper had been used to dealing with for over a decade.
The man was right, grading would be a breeze. It would mostly be a pass fail, and simple to grade based how they handled it. "What all teachers strive for," He chuckled, as he took another drink of liquid. He knew Charms inside and out. He was recognized as one of the experts in a subject many thought as trivial. With what he knew, sometimes it was hard to read paper after paper on the same subject. Aside form the repetitive monotony of each paper, it was sometimes astounding at some papers. Some felt like the student was merely grasping in the dark and hoping to pass, not knowing in the slightest what they were saying, while others only scratched the surface of the subject. Though there were a few that worked hard and reached farther than he asked. It was those small few that encouraged him in continuing down this path. He had to remind himself that many of them were still figuring things out. But for his NEWT level classes, he really tried to push the envelope. Stretching their knowledge and understanding, even encouraging them to find real work applications of the spells they were learning. Knowing simple counter spells had saved his life many times. With a chuckle, Jasper nodded at his friend. "That is the trick."
The conversation on who was the better influence was fun. He had to laugh when his friend said that he was the better influence. Jasper had been prefect, top of his class. "You sure about that." He said, also leaning back, settling in. It was clear that this night would end only after the bottle was empty, and the to, soon to be fully drunk professors slipped into a drink induced coma for the night. Jasper glanced over to his fire place as Meric mentioned the camp site atmosphere that seemed so far from his grasp, while still so closed to his memories. "Because that's how it used to be. Sitting around, often on the dirt, or whatever rocks or trunks we could find. Finally able to unwind and let loose after a long day in whatever dungeon, tomb, cave, or whatever we were working for the time." He spoke as he gazed into the fire, his mind flooding back to the good old times. Times he could never have again. Times that he longed for.
Snapping himself from the trance that seemed so normal now, he looked back at the man. "But we can easily make new memories." He raised his glass before finishing it once again.

@jasper he couldn't help but snort a little in laughter as jasper asked him if was sure. "if there's one thing i'm sure about it's that i was the best influence you ever had." he said with a grin as he finished off the whiskey in his glass. now best didn't really mean good, just that there was something about pulling each other out of their shells and giving each other the freedom to be more themselves than they'd ever been allowed to be at home. jasper with his family standards and meric having to be their for his siblings. school had offered them some kind of freedom against their families and given them the chance to actually just be kids.
"god i miss those days." he said as he stared at the flickering light that was lighting the room around them. he reached forward, grabbing the bottle of the neck once more as he filled his glass, slightly more fuller than he should have and he sank back into the couch, letting his body slide and he stretched his legs out in front of him. "there was nothing like it." of course he'd left for a reason he wouldn't change but it didn't mean he didn't miss what his life had been before everything had changed for him.
he raised his glass in something of a salute when jasper said they could make new memories. "this is true. the many many memories of keeping children alive while trying to teach them to survive in the real world when all they're interested in is snogging the opposite sex, ignoring the homework we set and eating the castles food supply on a daily basis." he said as he took a long sip of the drink in his hand. "do they even take in what we say to them .. i swear if i spoke french they'd take it in better." he asked the open space between them, the whiskey having gone to his head in more ways that one as they sat there slowly working their way through the bottle.
