you're just a ghost of blissful feelings a cloud of smoke that I keep breathing
October 12, 2025 @maria
She declined the hangover potion, and Rhys didn't blame her. While it was a handy potion to have around ironically for some it wasn't easy on the stomach and you had to fight to keep it down so it could do its job. But she accepted his offer to move, albeit hesitantly. They were fine on the couch, it wasn't a small couch but realistically it wasn't great in the long term. Rhys figured that their purely physical relationship somehow garnered a different sense of trust between them. Aside from the fact that he'd told her something very private that night he had the nightmare and she had told him something as well the day the Howler arrived. And now, granted if she even remembered, she knew more about Rhys than even some friends. Slytherins while known for their ambition and determination also had expectations of people and if those expectations were met then they received an unyielding amount of loyalty. Though Rhys might not know her well, he felt he could trust her.
She shifted and he could see her visibly wince in pain. The after effects of these drugs was unknown to him but now he was getting a first hand look at what it did do. It seemed worse than any migraine he'd gotten from drinking an entire bottle of bourbon by himself to get some sleep. Now that she had moved he could move his legs off the couch and he moved to face her. Walking might be asking a lot of her now, so he decided to try something. "Here, hold on to me." Rhys put one arm around her lower back and the other under her legs. As slowly as he could manage while standing and keeping his balance he lifted her up so he could carry her to the room. It seemed the most efficient at this point, her body heat against him felt good. He walked over to the room, though not too quickly. Entering the room he went to the right side of the bed, the side she usually fell asleep on if she did spend the night--though more often than not they were at their place rather than here. Again, as gently as he could manage he set her down on the bed where she could make herself comfortable.
It was morning, so it was still a bit cold and he felt the heat loss immediately. Hopefully the walk over hadn't been too bad but he couldn't be sure. Rhys walked back to the living room grabbing the water, trash can and his wand and returned back into the room. The water and trash can were placed on her side in case she had a need for them. The room was mostly dark, but he went around and closed the remaining shades, even without the after effects trying to sleep with the sun coming up was a challenge in itself. Since Rhys often had to sleep at random times from insomnia his blinds were adequate for this purpose. Once that was all settled he approached the left side of the bed, sitting and then laying down on his back. Exhaustion was creeping up on him, but he still felt oddly awake. A thought popped in his head, but he paused. It would be for her benefit too, wouldn't it? They had been fine and comfortable on the couch, it would help them both rest. Rhys slowly rolled onto his side, he didn't want to move the mattress too much and scooted a little closer to Maria and put his arm around her. If she pushed him away he would just roll back, but he almost wished she wouldn't--not this time.

Maria covered half her face with one hand and took a slow breath. Normally she didn't have issues with hangover potions. She'd had them plenty enough times. But, to be honest, she'd never had a hangover this bad before. And, considering her track record last night, her stomach had already proven that it wasn't much interested in keeping anything down currently. She didn't want to appear so... weak but the throbbing in her head told her she didn't have much of a choice. She grit her teeth, ready to just muscle through it even if it killed her, but Rhys moved faster. She'd dropped her hand back to the couch, ready to push herself away so she could stagger to the bedroom when Rhys stop, telling her to hold onto him. She squinted at him, about to wonder what he meant by that, but she didn't have the time. He'd already scooped her up into his arms.
No one had ever carried Maria like this. Despite the light sensitivity her eyes widened. She immediately looked away, so as to hide her surprise, and did as directed, leaning into his arms as he stood and walked to the bedroom. She didn't know if she hated this, or liked it. This was an extremely vulnerable position. In normal circumstances she knew she would have freaked out. Today though, she just stayed silent, pursing her lips tightly together and closing her eyes. The movement of him walking unleashed a whole new level of head spinning and stomach churning and she let out a sharp and pained breath.
The sweet relief of being set on the bed soon followed. Immediately she curled up on her side. Not quite into a ball but pretty damn close. Compared to the couch the bed was much nicer. Though, as comfortable as it was... Something was missing. Maria shifted, pulling the blanket up around herself, but still... Something missing. It helped, the weight of the blanket but it wasn't what she was missing. Not really.
It wasn't until Rhys had laid down beside her, his arm settling around her, that she realized what it was. Rhys. It'd been Rhys. She didn't pull away. In fact, she moved just a little closer, closing her eyes as she felt that comfortable warmth against her back and weight of his arm across her body.
[Time lapse until they are both functioning? Hahhah]

Rhys shifted a bit, his eyes slowly opening. The bedroom was still dark, thanks to the curtains and he was thankful as that was always the most difficult part of the morning. He looked down, recognizing the mass of long brown hair as the source of his current physical comfort. Again, he thought about what she had said--that he didn't sleep well alone and he wondered why it had taken so long to hit that nail on the head. It was a different craving, a different addiction for someone who had been perpetually alone for so long. The physical comfort of another human being. That's all this was right? Nothing more. Maria had rolled over at some point while they were asleep and was now facing him and curled up into his chest. She was warm. He wondered again how long they had been asleep. Rhys continued to look at her, she looked so peaceful. though it had been some time since he'd seen the half-veela all fired up.
He reached down with the hand that was free and pushed the hair out of her face, she was still sleeping. Hopefully she had gotten some rest and would feel better from this morning when they had relocated from the couch. Rhys didn't move, not for fear of waking her but because he felt relaxed and realized that he had slept though he still felt some exhaustion but nothing like this morning. Finally, thoughts he had been ignoring for the meantime crept up. Why had she called him? Maybe she trusted him more than she let on just as he felt he could trust her. He'd always figured with the day of the Howler if she would have ever told him that, the parts of her story that were revealed that day. Then again would Rhys have ever told her about himself or what he dreamt about so often.
How did they get here? This woman who he was supposed to never see again and then who gave him that adrenaline rush he got when he let go. Rhys had fought with himself on whether this was a good idea. How long could he go down this road before it was too late to turn back. Before he could keep thinking about it, she stirred--waking up slowly. "Morning." He whispered, "Or afternoon, not sure." It certainly hadn't been the whole day but a good chunk of time.

Blessed sleep finally came. Maybe it was the room being darker, or being in the bed. Most certainly wasn't the comforting presence of being in Rhys' arms. Either way, Maria finally managed to drift to sleep. Dreamless, pain free, and much needed. While Maria had never admitted it to Rhys, she'd learned a long time ago that, like him, she slept better near someone. It was almost why she'd started her promiscuous antics. Because then she wouldn't be alone. It seemed, however, that the trait was enhanced when she was in physical contact with the person. So, at some point while asleep, Maria had moved. Rolling over and tucking herself close to his chest. Like a moth drawn to the flame. Only, unlike the moth, this warmth wouldn't burn her.
There was movement outside her dreamless sleep, and it tugged at her consciousness. Trying to pull her back into the landing of the living, despite her reluctancies. She was still so tired. She could sleep all day, given a chance. She stirred in Rhys' arms, but didn't fully rouse until there was a whisper uncomfortably close to her ear. She could feel the breath on her skin. She liked close contact, when awake. Being asleep.... It was still a foreign feeling despite the few times they'd found themselves cuddling. Maria didn't pull away though, Instead she mumbled her own sort of greeting, but it sounded like a mishmash of Swedish and Portuguese. English was, after all, her third or fourth language. While spoken most often currently, her subconscious must revert to a more familiar language in her sleep.
Her rousing was slow, her awareness taking a few moments to catch up. No doubt still the effects of the hangover but it was much more tolerable than before. Her eyes fluttered and she took a deep breath, finally managing to stir. It took a only a moment of her eyes being open to realize where she was, and the.... position they were currently in. Though, unlike every other morning they'd woken in a compromising position, Maria just closed her eyes again and yawned. Was it the hangover that made her just accept the situation? Or was it jus the fact that this had been happening so frequently that it wasn't worth fighting anymore? Either way, her lack of a reaction to waking up in his arms would be new.

Maria was slow to wake, though he figured she would still sleep for a while. This probably wasn't something that was slept off in a few hours. Truth be told, Rhys wasn't eager to move. He was comfortable where he was even with her so close to him. Rhys wasn't really the type that spent a lot of time in pursuit of someone. Just as in the case with Maria it had just happened, and then had coincidentally happened again. Rhys could remember how frustrated he had felt, not physically since that had been quite the opposite, but more mentally than anything. This year had been a bit draining on him, he can't remember a time where his nightmares had been so bad but from his discussions with Jamie and Sienna it was most likely a side effect of that potion he was testing. While progress had been made on that end, he still wasn't sleeping well. At all. Maria had gotten under his skin in a way he hadn't expected. She muttered some words he didn't understand and he couldn't quite catch what language it had been in either. Though Rhys hardly spoke other languages he usually picked up words or phrases from traveling.
The surprise was that she didn't distance herself or push him away, staying where she was near him. Rhys had done his fair share of trying to subtly roll away, though he didn't this time either. All of them, even a werewolf like himself was only ever seeking comfort and Rhys typically found his in a bottle of Whiskey and tryst with someone he may or may not see again. When Deva wasn't dating someone they managed to find comfort in familiarity. With Maria she was an outlet for the emotions he pent up inside and tried to control, he didn't need to tame them around her. Finally Rhys glimpsed her familiar brown eyes, though they were still tired from her ordeal. There was a second where she seemed to register where she was, though acceptance seemed to come over her and she closed her eyes again. Rhys brought her closer to him gently, his chin resting lightly on the top of her head. He closed his eyes, he was still so tired.
