half my bones in the city streets the other in my sheets i don't think they'll ever get the chance to meet
October 25, 2025
Rhys let out a heavy sigh, slightly regretting a promise he had made some weeks back to his siblings to visit Zombie Island at some point since it was an event where the rest of the magical world met the Hogwarts student population. Rhys stood with his hands in his jacket pocket, his wand in its usual holstered place as he observed the happenings around him. He wasn't in a hurry to find Max or anyone, the weather was cool and he enjoyed how it felt. It was a habit for Rhys to take in his surroundings, however long it took and usually it didn't take long to commit it to memory somehow, a habit he'd created through his work and it was necessary for his safety. His trainee years had been filled with close calls and angry mentors drilling in him to pay attention, to control and to focus. He listened to them, they had been doing this for many years after all and managed to stay alive although he saw many injured on the job. Rhys had sustained his handful of injuries but none of them bad enough to take him out of a job he actually really enjoyed, fortunately. Briskly, he kept walking. There were kids from the school along with professors and other adults he assumed were volunteers and it gave him a flashback to when he was a student, he didn't have the beard he had now and his hair had been longer displaying dark curls, but his eyes were much the same.
Why hadn't he wanted to come? The idea had seemed silly, but if he had a weak point it was one of his sisters asking him for something an so here he walked mostly observing but really keeping an eye out for wherever he could obtain something alcoholic. Rhys walked around small clusters of people, often moving completely sideways to avoid running into someone and having pumpkin juice spilled on him, until he saw the stand slightly ahead. However, he paused. Of course, why should he be surprised. Familiar brown hair stood out among the patrons near the drink stand and it was unmistakably her. Even without their habit of running into and being with one another, you didn't just forget a half-veela. He wasn't sure why he paused, it wasn't as if he had not just seen her a couple days prior. They'd woken up, again legs tangled with one another and he still found he could remember how her skin felt against his own. Another deep breath and he walked casually toward the stand. When he approached close enough he noticed she still hadn't turned toward him which most likely meant she hadn't seen him. Rhys approached mostly from behind and when he was reasonably close enough he finally spoke. "If I didn't know any better I'd say you were following me."

Maria hadn't planned on visiting the Hogwarts Halloween event again. She'd visited one before, a little less than a week ago. The first visit had been purely out of curiosity and boredom. This time, it had been more business. A guy had wanted a date to show off to his friends during some of the festivities. He hadn't paid much, so she hadn't promised much. A few faked laughs and smiles. At least, until the boys had decided to continue the party else where and Maria brushed them off. He hadn't paid for that, and she wasn't in a very giving mood tonight. To be honest, Maria just wasn't in a giving mood in general. She'd been putting in quite a few hours with her... alternative work. Because of it she was feeling a bit... agitated. As much as she preferred strangers, she'd found herself almost craving the attention of someone that actually knew her. No fake smiles, no fake laughs. No pretending to like some scumbag just because he was paying her or because she was drunk and wanted to forget something.
Her date and his friends had left a few minutes prior. Maria stood alone, arms folded across her chest as she eyed the drink menu. She was trying to decide if she should just go home and call it a night, when she heard a familiar voice. She tilted her head back just enough to look behind her. There was Rhys. Ah, such a complicated situation the pair had gotten themselves into. And yet, here they were. Again.
Maria's expression, which had been quite harsh until that moment, softened. She unfolded her arms from across her chest, and clasped her hands behind her back. "You're the one talking to me, so I think you're the one following," she answered slowly. "What brings you here, Rhys? You don't strike me as a "festivals" type."

She turned to see who had spoken to her and turned, she looked at him with her usual expression--or at least he one he was using to seeing when he was around. Was she her alone? Rhys hadn't thought about if she was here with possibly friends or even--a date? Actually, up until that second the thought of Maria on a date hadn't really occurred to him, he supposed it was that his attention was focused on whatever it was you wanted to label this strange dynamic they had. He half smiled at her response, it was true he had walked over here before she had known of his presence here at the festival. "I um--" He corrected himself, shifting from one foot to the other "I have some friends helping with the event and they asked me to stop by and check it out." Rhys had almost mentioned his sister, but decided that was probably not the best idea. It wasn't that Rhys was an untruthful person he generally was, but just like she had pushed him out once or twice in the past he knew she would at the mention of her. "What about you?" This hardly seemed like some where she would be caught without a good reason. Then again he supposed her incident a couple weeks prior might have steered her away from clubs for a moment but truthfully he didn't know.
When he thought about it, he knew her name and where she worked and those tidbits from her past he'd come across by accident. Just as she knew him, his family, his job and the things from his past that haunted him. If she remembered anything from that night she hadn't mentioned it. Rhys glanced back up at the sign that listed all the available beverages, moving up to stand beside Maria. "What are you drinking?" He asked her, still pondering if he should go with something familiar or try something new. The effect was still the same, the buzz he craved or even more but he would probably need to avoid that if he wanted to avoid a portkey or apparation mishap later. Rhys turned slightly and looked at her, standing close, she was really only a few inches shorter than him and he'd always been tall. "Are you going to stay?" He asked, eyes locking with hers out of habit. It was their pattern, wasn't it? Though their relationship was physical, she didn't run away from how he really was. The hidden aggressiveness, the person all that self-control sought to tame. Rhys was hardly the type to let someone in so close, but as he asked the question knew what answered he hoped for.

Was Maria in the mood to entertain Rhys' company? She wasn't exactly sure, which was probably why she wasn't smiling yet. She had a rather stoic, but intense look in her eyes, like a cat that hadn't decided if you were food yet. His response was almost what decided it for her, and she finally smiled softly, that intense stare turning more human than predatory. "Really? Lucky friends." Though, she wasn't sure who his friends might be. He was a few years older then her, after all. A fact that they didn't really talk about. Or that Maria was the same age has two of his half siblings (one being dead). They just stayed clear of all potentially awkward subjects. But, he was old enough that these friends likely weren't students. Unless he meant the brat. She was still one.... right? Not that Maria cared.
Maria shrugged nonchalantly as he returned the question, looking away and back to the menu. "Business. It's done now though." His question, and her answer, made her realize that she knew far more about Rhys than he knew about her. Though there were quite few gaps in her memory from that night earlier in the month she'd remembered bits and pieces. Rhys knew she danced at Club Indigo, but he had no idea what she did on the side. To be honest though, she didn't really tell people that. She'd long since grown sick of the derogatory terms people gave women in that line of work.
Rhys had moved to her side, taking in the menu as well. "I haven't decided," she admitted. Alcohol was, unfortunately, out of the question. She was too far from home to impair her judgement. She titled her head once more to glance at him. It was rather odd, running into him at such an event. At a bar, or a club, that made sense. But a Halloween festival? For some reason that felt... strange. Good, but strange. Perhaps it was because this place wasn't in either of their elements. It was foreign terrain to both Maria and Rhys. Their eyes met, and almost seem to lock. Was she staying? That the question wasn't it. "I haven't decided that either." She spoke softly, so only he'd hear. She leaned a touch closer, her gaze never wavering from his own. "Do you want me to stay..?"

half my bones in the city streets the other in my sheets i don't think they'll ever get the chance to meet
October 25, 2025
Rhys was curious what business meant, but he didn't ask for clarification. It wasn't what they did. Who they were around one another didn't come through some extra effort or pulling by any means, they just were. Not too long ago the thought had annoyed Rhys to no end, how he would lose himself with her and forget the restraint he'd so carefully worked on for so many years. But, it had become a new norm for him. The façade and the face he wore every day and instead of compartmentalizing the rest he'd just have to find her, find Maria. Conversation wasn't something they entertained often, though sometimes it wasn't needed. Perhaps what she had told him that day, admitting she also had demons helped her not judge who he was behind his walls. The drink menu had familiar drinks on it but also themed drinks that were created in the spirit of the Halloween festival, so he supposed he would try one of those. Perhaps an ale instead of his usual whiskey tonight.
Rhys hoped she would stay, if she decided to leave he probably wouldn't have been able to stop himself from skipping out on meeting his sister and following her. Usually Rhys would have shown up during times he was feeling particularly temperamental or days his temper was getting the best of him, but even now something inside him stirred with just her around. The thing was, he liked it. She looked back at him, speaking in a low and familiar tone. 'Do you want me to stay?' There were very few people that he bent for, his family, select close friends and that was it. Rhys paused again."Yes, I do." He admitted, her gaze never seemed to fail to captivate him. Though he did have to remind himself he was trying to fight a half-veela at times. "If you don't have other plans, of course." He then said casually, looking away. That gaze. Rhys still recalled the beginning of the summer all those months ago, she'd broken him down with more or less just her charm and those eyes.
With two people so physically involved one would expect a sort of innate familiarity, surely they could exist in such a different arena. Though it wasn't a topic that had been broached or he'd even asked, but somewhere he'd started considering Maria a friend. Not at the same level as Renfri or Nell by any means, but something different.

Interesting. Maria was pleasantly surprised by his honest answer, admitting he wanted her to stay. Staying would be an entirely different scenario for them. In a crowd of people, surrounded by games and food. It was "the real world". Her staying meant that their usual antics were out the window. Yet, despite that, Rhys wanted her to stay. Maria straightened, though her gaze never left him. Even when he looked away. That "cat meets mouse" look was back in her eyes, as if considering what her next move might be. She hadn't been in the best moods in general tonight, and for some reason she felt a strong urge to take that foul mood out on him. Though, not in a fire throwing way. No, she felt an uncontrollable urge to tease and torment him. To play with him. Just like how a cat would let a mouse go it had caught just to it could catch the mouse again to torment it.
Maria slowly started to smile, unclasping her hands from behind her back and rested her hand on his arm as he was looking away. "I have plans now," she said. "How about some fun. You order something for me, I order something for you. Whoever guesses their drink right gets to decide where we go first." There were plenty of games and stands around, after all. Since he wanted her to stay, might as well make a game out of it. Though, most likely not a game Rhys was expecting...

Rhys felt her hand grab his arm as she spoke to affirm he was her plans now. Her demeanor had changed but Rhys didn't catch it as he continued to eye the chart. Even with the current company he couldn't think of doing anything like this completely sober. If his friends or siblings knew anything about him is that Rhys drank, to what extent he drank he wasn't sure if they were aware. Though he imagined if they were aware of the bottles of whiskey he needed to get past a nightmare sometimes they might have something to say about it. 'How about some fun.' She began and he looked down and to his side where she stood to hear her proposal. "Okay, fine." Rhys glanced back at the chart. Everything, and he meant everything was pumpkin flavored. Pumpkin juice, pumpkintini, pumpkin ale, pumpkin whiskey. The person manning the stand looked at Rhys, awaiting his request. He couldn't have been a student as he doubted they would have entrusted this amount of alcohol in their care but perhaps a recent graduate. "A pumpkin whiskey for the lady." Rhys declared, looking to the side and to Maria again, wondering what drink she would choose for him.
Although he hadn't been there long he had expected to see more familiar faces than he had encountered. Two friends who he also used to work with were now teaching at Hogwarts, injuries had sidelined them and he knew it hadn't been ideal but the background of a Cursebreaker was ideal for teaching, just as an Auror would have been ideal to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts. Rhys figured he might run into them eventually, or not at all considering the size of this festival. For once he felt particularly calm, though he didn't attribute that to anything. Maybe his sleep had been somewhat better but any gains on that front were balanced equally by whatever side effects that new werewolf potion would give him. The evening had already headed down an unexpected direction, he truly didn't know what to expect next.

Rhys agreed, and Maria flashed him a brilliant grin. It was fake, extremely fake, but also well practiced. It wasn't that she wasn't happy. Just more she was in a bad mood and had finally found an outlet for it. Maria took a few steps back, so that he could order her a drink without her potentially overhearing. After all, they had to guess what they got each other. The pumpkin spice would help mask whatever the other ingredients in the drink were. That what would make guessing so interesting. Though, Maria already knew what she'd order him. Something that he'd hopefully guess easily. And probably not like. Because, again, she wasn't in a very giving mood right now.
Rhys had ordered the drink, and she shooed him away from the stand once he had it in hand. Couldn't have her knowing what he ordered her, right? Also couldn't have him knowing what she ordered him. Yet. She glanced back at the menu, then over her shoulder to Rhys to ensure he was far enough away. Only once she was satisfied that he wasn't close enough to overhear did she turn back to the stand. "Pumpkin and apple Sangria." Was it a bit mean? Maybe. He wasn't a fan of fruity drinks from her experience, so she hoped it would make it easy to guess. Plus, it'd probably irk him to have to drink something so sweet.
Drink in hand, she returned to Rhys' side, putting on a clearly faked innocent smile. "New rule. We both have to finish our drink. Regardless of whether we like it or not. Deal?" She held the drink out to him, still smiling. But you could practically sense her mischievous and impish intentions.

October 25, 2025
Rhys took an extra step or two back when she shooed him away, there was something in her eyes something he recognized but couldn't pinpoint. Very quickly she returned back to where he was standing, a drink in her hand he didn't recognize but could only imagine was pumpkin flavored just like everything else. Her smile was mischievous and that's when he realized what that had been in her eyes. Still, he wasn't surprised. Maria was unlike any woman he'd met in that sense, she was always up to something and always looking though that could have just had roots in her defensive nature. 'New rule.' she declared and when she explained what it was he looked curiously back at the drink she was holding. Instinctively, he knew it was going to be something he would have never ordered for himself. She never made it easy for him.
He paused for a moment, look back at her and then back to the drink. "And if I don't?" He asked, out of curiosity at this point. She had a way of exacting what she wanted from him. Since that night at the club when she had forcibly taken his restraint it seemed it didn't take much to get what she wanted. Rhys held out the drink he had ordered so she could grab it and took the one she had ordered for him. He looked at it with his usual healthy suspicion of something unknown, a habit of being curse breaker and often coming into contact with something unknown. He looked back at her, "Well, this is your game. You first." Rhys was apprehensive, trying to figure out if she was up to something or just trying to make this festival experience a bit more lively.

Maria tilted her head as he questioned the new rule. There were a great many things she could do if he didn't play along, certainly. Though, what would truly motivate him to play along? Well... There was one thing that came to mind. "Then you're banned from my apartment for a month," she stated matter of factly. Not really a obvious threat, consider they weren't... well, a couple. It was more of a hidden meaning. Of what they did at her apartment. They're encounters over the past few months had been pretty frequent, usually at least once a week, except on a few rare occasions. So, refusing him for a whole month would be an excruciatingly long time. Was it a bit mean to pull that sort of ultimatum over someone that she'd practically made addicted to her? Yes. But no one would accuse Maria of being nice.
They swapped drinks, Maria eyeing the drink he'd ordered for her and wondering just what he'd gotten. Even if she knew, it'd be easy to feign ignorance. But also having to make sure that Rhys didn't catch on to what she was up to too quickly. So, when he told her to drink first, she smiled. She raised the cup to her mouth and took a sip. The pumpkin spice was surprisingly strong, almost masking the taste beneath it. But there was a familiar burn in her throat. It was surprisingly hard to pinpoint. Alcoholic of some sort. So that ruled out all the non-alcoholic drinks. But it wasn't a sweet or fruity alcohol like she'd gotten him. The burn was too strong. Maria glanced back over her shoulder at the menu, trying to pinpoint what it was... Ah... Whiskey. Had to be. "Is it the ale?"

Rhys gave her a look, hopefully the displeasure at her suggestion if he lost was evident in his eyes. Although, it didn't mean his apartment was off limits but it didn't ensure her attendance as showing up to her place did. She had become a part of his routine, and now she threatened to take herself away from that. The idea bothered him, she was an outlet and without those he wasn't sure how that would mess with his head. The idea left him feeling emboldened, he couldn't have his routine be derailed over a simple game of guess. Rhys looked the drink he was given, the color wasn't dark and the smell that hit his nostrils wasn't what he had expected from his usual whiskies. He took a drink of it, there wasn't much of a burn and more pumpkin, cinnamon and that last flavor. Rhys thought for a second, he couldn't pinpoint it at first but it was fruity and very sweet.
A first guess was legitimately something non-alcoholic. Perhaps she was toying with him knowing he had this unspoken dependency. Before he could say his guess he watched as she took a drink of the beverage, glancing back at the drink menu to make her guess. 'ale?' She asked and Rhys looked at her, surprised she had guessed so wrong. The way she had handled her whiskey and bourbon that first night had told him she could handle it and was familiar, so he wondered what her endgame was here. Rhys wasn't a man that needed to be handed victories, why was she handing him this one. "No." He answered focusing back on the cup in his own hand. Rhys' drink was definitely not whiskey, nor was it an ale. It wasn't the pumpkin juice as he was familiar with that one from his days at school. Other mixed drinks were usually strong and you could taste the gin or whatever the mix was. Rhys glanced at the drink menu a last time and settled on his choice, looking back at Maria.
The drink might as well have been a juice, but he was familiar. The perks of traveling to so many different places for work had let him encounter many different drinks, food and culture. For the sake of this little game and her earlier threat to essentially cut him off he drank the entire contents of his small glass. "The Sangria?"

Maria knew she had him cornered with that threat and she couldn't help the smug look on her face. No doubt he didn't want to give her that sort of control. Could she stay away from him for a month? No, absolutely not. But controlling the terms of when they met would probably drive him insane. Because he seemed to have an uncontrollable itch. A thirst that was never quelled for long. He didn't verbally agree, but she could tell what his answer was. His silent agreement.
Maria took a few more sips of her drink as he pondered over his. He'd answered that she was wrong. She knew she was wrong. It had been intentional. The question was, would he get his right? She hoped so. The fruity flavors of Sangria mixed with the pumpkin spice. While an alcohol, Sangria didn't really have any sort of burn. It was something people look drink in large quantities without feeling how much alcohol they were consuming. She raised an eyebrow as he looked at the menu and then back to her. He still didn't respond immediately, finishing his drink before finally answering. "Correct!" She answered cheerfully, faking a bright smile. She quickly finished her own drink, not even flinching at the intense burn at the back of her throat. Of course it was whiskey. "You get to choose. What shall we do first?"

half my bones in the city streets the other in my sheets i don't think they'll ever get the chance to meet
October 25, 2025
There was doubt on the surface, and also reluctance. Maria thrived on having her way and very rarely acted otherwise in Rhys' experience. Although she appeared to have let him win this and void her threat, he knew that she would have held him to that agreement had he lost. He supposed she wouldn't have wanted the situation to turn into that either. Sangria was not a drink that Rhys consumed often unless it was the only alcoholic beverage available which had happened to him once or twice, it was too sweet for his taste typically had a more unpleasant hangover the following day. He could still taste the sweetness in his mouth, which he would need to take care of at some point. Maria finished her own drink easily, reminding him that their next course of action was now his choice. Rhys first thought was the drink stand behind them, and he had recalled passing the Pumpkin Carving stand on the way here however he nixed that thought since that meant Maria would likely be in possession of something sharp and he honestly wasn't sure what should would do with that.
Still, Rhys couldn't move on from the fact that she'd let him win. Why? It bothered him, irritated him even. Before he could get back to choosing where they went next, he had had to know. But the question was also, would she tell him or even admit it? "You let me win." He paused, crossing his arms. "Why?" It was her game and anytime she had played some kind of game with him she did it to win, to command. He was curious of her response now but he did keep in mind the rest of the festival and the options there were to go to next. There was the forest which you walked through and had some kind of Halloween experience, whatever that meant. Then there were the corn mazes, which would allow them some privacy but he wasn't fond of the prospect of actually getting lost in there. Maybe they could just leave, go back to somewhere familiar and the familiar routine.

Rhys wasn't deciding what they should do, despite his "winning". He was silent for several moments, and honestly? It irked Maria. She was giving him a free pass. To do whatever he wanted and drag her along. Why wasn't he taking it? Why was he hesitating? Sure, her intentions to let him win weren't exactly honest, but he'd still won. Most men wouldn't hesitate. Was Rhys suspicious of her? Shit, did he know her well enough to realize he should be suspicious?
Her own suspicions were convinced when he spoke, accusing het of letting him win. She feigned shock. "What? I'd never!" She reached out and plucked the empty cup from his hand, and tossed her own and his into a nearby trashcan. He's crossed his arms, now demanding to know why. She placed her hands on his crossed arms, leaning into him just a touch. "Come on, why would I let you win? Just relax. You look like you think I'm up to something." Which, she was. Very much up to something, but probably confusing the hell out of him. Because when she was "up to something" it didn't mean letting other people win. "Let's go have some fun."

Rhys still had his arms crossed as she refuted his claim, although her tone wasn't a very sincere one. The cup that had the sangria had been tossed away and it almost felt unnatural to not be holding a cup of something especially with her. She leaned into him, her hands on his crossed arms. Although he still wanted to know what her intentions were, just as when they were in private the closer she was to him the more the fog crept a bit into his brain. Again the denial, but the last time they were in a mostly public place she'd gotten under his skin before he even knew what was happening, now in this very public he wasn't sure if he was overthinking it or not. "And you're not?" He asked again, his eyebrow slightly raised. At the same time, she was probably right. They could just go have some fun whatever that meant. In their usual terms it meant almost entirely solely one activity, but they were in public after all.
"Okay." Rhys said as he dropped his arms to his side. He quickly looked around again, it was getting a bit crowded. Which was expected so close to Halloween. "I haven't seen the whole festival, we can walk around and see what's around." Rhys spoke as he glanced around again, he really couldn't pinpoint the last time he'd attended this since he was a student. "Or we could get lost in the maze." Getting lost with Maria would hardly be such a bad thing. Rhys still held onto a small suspicion, they were two different but strong personalities and she was being a bit more accommodating than usual. The crowd around them grew and it was probably due to their proximity to the drink stand, it was easy to get separated in crowds like this. "Lets get out of this crowd first." Rhys spoke again to her, not directly looking at her but more around them for somewhere more clear. Without thinking he grasped her hand and began to walk through a part of the crowd that was a bit thinner than the rest, this way they wouldn't get separated and could get some space.
