Esther wasn’t really upset about her costume, she gave a cool shrug when he apologised and smiled at him reassuringly. The half Veela loved to tease - it was in her nature and it was generally harmless. At least with Alfie it was. At least that’s what she thought.
Untying the wings from her shoulders wasn’t as simple as it sounded, since she’d concealed them underneath her dress for a neat finish. That was a typical example of her usual attention to detail. As Alfie went to help her with the task, she looked highly amused and laughed. Having him partially pinned down this way was kind of fun and in the back of her mind she expected this to result in some kind of playfight of sorts.
However, what occurred next wasn’t entirely anticipated. It was definitely a few levels up from that. Alfie’s hands came up to hold her face and he leaned forward to kiss her fervently on the mouth. Esther instinctively kissed him back, her body pressing up against his in the pile of broken corn stalks. Kissing Alfie was pretty natural - he was a good kisser that was for sure. She wasn’t opposed to messing around, she didn’t think it was a big deal, however it was escalating quickly and this probably wasn’t the time or place. She stopped and pulled back, pausing.
Esther raised her hand to Alfie’s forehead pretending to check his temperature like she would a student in the infirmary. “Are you feeling OK?” Her lips pressed together, then she paused and cleared her throat, switching to a kind of whisper “It’s just that last time you were trying to take my clothes off and we were making out, you suffered some pretty concerning memory loss shortly after, so you know… Just making sure…” she bit down softly on her bottom lip for effect, the sarcasm quite apparent in her tone. Even in a moment like this she couldn’t help giving Alfie shit.

After Alfie went in for the kiss, he knew there was no backing down, but there was still that voice in the back of his head and internal alarms going off. He wasn't drunk enough to blame it on the alcohol this time. Two doubles of firewhisky shouldn't have been enough to blame putting his tongue down his best friend's throat. In the heat of the moment, it felt right when their lips meshed, bodies melting into each other as their tongues tangled passionately. It was fantastic. But as quick as it happened, Esther pulled away after a couple of glorious moments, tearing her mouth from his. Alfie's hands dropped from her sides awkwardly as she raised the back of her hand to his naturally warm forehead, asking if he was okay. She didn't seem upset, maybe a little confused. Honestly, he was fucking confused too. Scratching the back of his neck, he felt himself getting flustered from Esther calling him out about that one time... The back of her hand was cool as it made contact with his naturally warm forehead. "Uh-yeah-no- I mean, yes. I'm fine." he stumbled over his words, eyes darting away and back to the radiant blonde. Fuck. Esther was onto him. Alfie laughed nervously, swallowing. "I don't know what came over me..." he told her softly, gently starting to sit up to push her off of him so he could stand up, "I probably shouldn't have done that. I'm sorry." he said with an awkward laugh as he looked at Esther. Okay, now he needed more drinks and this maze had lost all eeriness since his reality had become more of a nightmare.

Esther had to admit she felt a little guilty for making Alfie uncomfortable by calling him out, but at the same time she couldn’t help but feel like he was making way too big a deal out of it. She arched a brow as he exclaimed his confusion for what had come over him and started to shift out from underneath her. She took her cue and pushed up from off of him standing up straight, brushing herself off before extending an arm to help him up.
"I probably shouldn't have done that. I'm sorry."
“It’s not a big deal. Forget about it.” she told him with an air of indifference. Maybe it was better if they did just forget about it if things were gonna get awkward. Esther understood and appreciated that not everyone was cut out for friends with benefit style arrangements. Actually, it had never really worked for her in the past, so why should it now? Alfie was already being a weirdo. It was probably best to just let it pass. “We’ll just forget it ever happened.” Esther smiled and gave him a knowing wink, like it was just another funny bit of mischief they could add to their long list of dumb things they got up to together. Like their little secret
“Should we get out of here and go get some more whiskey? You’re right, this maze does kinda suck.”

Alfie’s awkwardness was gradually growing, his stomach replacing pleasure with anxiety. Esther didn’t seem to mind. Or she was playing the part extremely well. This wasn’t something that Alfie did on a regular basis, or ever. Friends with benefits wasn’t a concept in his mind, he knew he couldn’t handle something like that. Sure, a one night stand was one thing, but he knew he’d always be the one to catch feelings the longer it went. It’s just how his brain worked and he didn’t know how he was going to get over this hunch tonight after embarrassing himself. Alfie wanted to blame it on the alcohol but knew he couldn’t. The sad truth was he got caught up in the moment with the blonde straddling him.
The Professor nodded at her words, trying to look her in the eyes so he didn’t seem nervous. That alone made his stomach drop. ”Yeah, cool.. I would appreciate that.” he agreed, feigning nonchalance with an easy going laugh and shrug. They both raised to their feet and he dusted himself off, crunching a couple cobs in the dirt. The shrieks, wails, and disorienting charms were nothing for the reality he was facing now. He couldn’t believe he could be so stupid!
”Good idea..” he laughed again. Alfie was mentally kicking himself. They made their way out of the corn maze side by side, this time more distance between each other than when they went in. They were at the end of the maze already, which annoyed Alfie, because he would have made it out of there without embarrassing himself. As they made their way toward the bartender, he looked down at his watch, grumbling, ”The dancing will be starting in t-minus 30. That should be plenty of time to get our drink on.”[\b] he informed, attempting to bring back their usual banter. ”Hows the eyeliner?” he added more jokingly, feeling like it had smeared while they were in the corn maze.
