Today was such a great day! Finally she was going to be able to take a peek at some of the rarest books they had in stock. Now, she also knew that the reason they were chained and hexed was mostly to prevent them from being stolen. That didn’t mean the curses were things that she had to take lightly. Full-body binding was the first layer on most of them, which she knew from personal experience after trying it once. A ploy set up by the owner to teach her not to mess around with this set. Anyone that managed to break out of that then had to deal with a series of increasingly nastier hexes and curses, and finally whatever remained on the book itself. She knew that getting them down for a girl that was basically still a student was sort of foolish, but she also didn’t care. Nothing ventured, nothing gained! And it would do her good to make sure she knew all of the counter-spells correctly if a prospective buyer did actually swing by someday.
Practically skipping back to the counter, Mina unlocked the cash register and dug around for the lockbox that the list of spells she needed. Finding it in the way back after stabbing her finger on a rogue paperclip, Mina fished the box out and stuck the smallest key on her chain into it and turned. And nothing happened. The box wouldn’t open. She hadn’t been tricked by the owner, had she? Was this something that actually needed his approval in order to get it open? Most likely a specific key that only he had. Hers was either a dud or the correct charm hadn’t been brought over when making the copy. Sucking on her sore finger as she put the box down on the counter, she decided to try a simple unlocking charm, casting alohomora on it. It didn’t work, as was expected, and she decided that she had put enough effort into it already. The girl was going to have to deal with not looking at them until the boss was back in.
Putting everything back to where it belonged, Mina returned to where she had left the customer, shrugging as she came down the aisle. “Couldn’t get it unfortunately. If you come back in tomorrow when the owner is here, I’m sure he’d be more than glad to pull one down and give you a peek.”
