did i build this ship to wreck?
December 2, 2025 @maria
She didn’t answer right away but he didn’t feel there was any need to rush in and break down the door, and again he could still feel her seething with frustration toward him so he didn’t want to antagonize her further. It was more serious situations that their tendency to fight was not useful or helpful in anyway and really only served to leave them both in a bad mood especially when they were both trying to be dominating. Finally, he heard her speak—the trademark attitude told him she was alive and well and didn’t need him to be some kind of a hero today. In fact, that might have just pissed her off even more. Rhys couldn’t help but roll his eyes a bit at her comment, if she was still having issues with nausea then that only told him that there wasn’t anything in her current apartment that was helping so rummaging through the cabinets was not the safest thing to do. In fact, the only person he could really think of to ask would be Jamie and she would ask him why he needed pertinent information on potions that were safe for pregnant women. Still, there were options—perhaps he could as Sienna and ask her to keep the fact that he’d stop by a secret, but even that felt risky.
”The healers recommend anything?” He asked, they were still talking through the door though he didn’t mind considering she had just tried to maim him. Whether or not he was the father of their unborn kid hadn’t seemed to matter in that second. Rhys anger had subsided for the most part, the perk of it being short was that unless he was repeatedly provoked it did eventually go away and he was left with whatever else he was feeling. Maria’s words replayed themselves in his head, though he tried not to think about it because him admitting she was somewhat right only annoyed him. ”I have a friend who has a potions shop, I can ask her too and bring it next time I’m back.” He also offered. Rhys may have been a total asshole as far as she was concerned and that wasn’t too far off the mark, but he didn’t much feel like sitting around. Not that there was anything to sit on with the burnt couch. Suddenly, he was overcome with a “what now?” feeling which really only fueled his anxiety but it was the question at the top of his mind.

Maria moved, though only so that her forehead was now on the cool tub surface, one arm under her chin and the other draped over the lip of the tub. It had been one of the only reliefs from the nausea she'd found. Sometimes it was the little things in life, like how tubs were always nice and cool if they weren't filled with hot water. It was helping both her issues though, her temper and her stomach.
The healer had recommended a great number of things. Practically given Maria a book (okay, bit of an exaggeration, but when wasn't Maria dramatic?). The papers, from what she recalled, were in the kitchen, discarded on the counter. "What didn't she recommend..." she mumbled quiet, before sitting up and running a hand through her hair to pull it from her face. With a deep breath she stood up, then paused a moment, waiting to see if her stomach would knot again. It wouldn't be the first time she tried to function only to end up right back where she was. All clear so far, so she reached for the door, pulling it open with, thankfully, much less force then she'd closed it. She glanced at him out of the corner of her eyes, but the fire in her eyes was extinguished. I think just anything safe for me to take works," she muttered. The list of things not to do was just as, if not longer, then the to dos. The smell of burnt leather hit her nose and she sighed. In her rage she hadn't even thought about how setting the couch on fire would ruin it. That was why it was so easy for her to set things on fire. Because in the moment it happened from rage she completely forgot the consequences. "Stop pissing of pregnant people, Rhys." It was half teasing, but also a hint of frustration.
Seeing as the couch was now... well, burnt to a crisp, she moved to her bedroom and flopped on the bed, curling up on her side and putting a pillow over her head. "I think I'm going to keep it." She announced, even though only minutes before she'd sounded so unsure of what she might do. This argument had made up her mind.

She didn’t answer him, or he didn’t hear her, but he didn’t think too much about. It had been an emotional day for both of them in different ways and Rhys was still feeling a bit on edge though he wasn’t fuming anymore. When he heard some movement and then the door click open, he took a step back, so he wasn’t blocking her. Now that he was calmer, not much calmer but still, he looked at her before she walked past him. She looked tired and didn’t seem to be seething with anger anymore, her usual tone was back as she ordered him to stop making her angry. Normally he would have said something sarcastic back in response as per their usual banter, but he felt he’d caused enough pain for one day. Now, he made a mental note that he’d have to stop by and see either Jamie or Sienna for anything he could bring though he had to find a way to do it without creating suspicion on his sister’s end. His siblings were all intelligent individuals though his sisters would still be on high alert after Halloween.
She walked into her room and curled up on the bed and Rhys followed her after a moment, he felt a bit lost on what he was supposed to be doing so he leaned in the doorway for a moment instead. This room, this bed, her. He thought about how he had missed it when he’d run off, and he knew it was something or he wouldn’t have reacted like that. After a moment, he was brought out of his thoughts by her declaration and he let out the breath he had suddenly been holding. ”Ok.” He responded if only just to acknowledge her, he knew she angry with him, but this was something they needed to be on the same side about. It still felt a bit unreal to him, especially so early in the pregnancy though mainly he was just scared. Fatherhood and a family had only ever been just been a pipe dream. Rhys was tired, all this anger and anxiety left him a bit drained. He took a deep breath. This was just the beginning of a very long road ahead. He walked into the room and set on the edge of the bed, trying not to move it so much but he lied down behind her. ”Maria.” He spoke simply, if she didn’t want him there, she would let him know. She’d never had a problem letting him know with an elbow to the ribs or something similar.
He didn’t have anyone to talk to about this, if he considered all the factors. There was going to be reliance on one another. ”I’m sorry.” He muttered. It wasn’t a strength of his—apologizing.

Despite her head currently being under a pillow like an ostrich, Maria felt Rhys' presence, then his simple "ok" in response to what she'd said. She owed him that, letting him know that she'd keep the pregnancy, considering he was the father. He didn't argue, telling her to get rid of it. Not that she expected him too. Not after he'd mentioned not abandoning the child like both of them had been abandoned. No, she wasn't surprised that he was willing to accept it. Though now that the decision was made... A creeping fear, that had only been a shadow in her mind, came rushing forward to engulf her. Her. A mom. Having a baby. Raising said child. Screwing up said child. And god, the rumors. Maria was normally a "screw what people think" type person. This though... The poor child would have to deal with the consequences of their actions. The messed up actions of their parents who were not really but sort of related. Their dead uncle would also be their second cousin. Maria knew personally how cruel people could be, and this child would have so.. so much to deal with. Could Maria really do that to a child?
The bed shifted just a little and she felt Rhys lay down on the other side of the bed. He didn't try to touch her, something she wasn't sure if she would or wouldn't accept, if she was honest. But... As angry she was of his previous abandonment she didn't want to be alone either. She'd been dealing with this alone for a week now. He was the first person she'd told (aside from the healer, obviously). While he couldn't know exactly what she was feeling he was going through something similar. They were both in this situation, the only difference was who was carrying the child. She swallowed hard as he said her name, hating and loving the way it sounded. She uncovered her head and rolled onto her back. Again, she didn't touch him, though he didn't try either. Then, in the silence... he apologized. She turned her head to stare at him. She looked surprised. Immediately snarky words leaped into her mind, but that wasn't what she said when she finally spoke. "For?" She felt it was a legitimate question. Considering how much abuse they put each other through, there were a number of things he was apologizing for. For the fight. For getting her pregnant. For abandoning her when she finally opened up to him about something deeply personal.

did i build this ship to wreck?
December 2, 2025 @maria
It was a complex situation on many levels, so many levels. They had been in a physical relationship, Maria and his siblings constantly wanted to hex one another, and he was supposed to have stopped seeing her altogether. And of course, the cherry on top she was the maternal half-cousin of his dead younger half-brother. It almost gave him a headache to think of all the factors against them though Rhys was used to the odds being stacked against him. And then another thought, his name. Greyback was famous because of their father and his reputation especially during the last war on the Death Eater’s side. Though he had never been one himself. The idea added to his nervousness, his stomach did a little flip. Would the child have his name? There were so many questions that needed to be answered but it would have been pointless to ask them all now with how overwhelmed they both were. It had been quite a day, Rhys had gone from exhausted from a month away in Egypt to finding out he was going to be a father. There was an exhaustion on all levels and not to mention his overall restlessness because of the upcoming full moon.
That could certainly be a factor in his mood, why he’d gotten angry faster than normal and was now incredibly anxious—like he had extra energy to burn off, but he was also just tired. When he said her name, she rolled over and he hadn’t even expected that much from her. He had figured the pillow over the head was a clear ‘leave me alone’ sign that he was ignoring. Honestly, he would have loved to give her some space as he needed some as well but he knew he would have just gone home and hid in a bottle of whiskey and then still feel like this tomorrow. And as much as he had wanted to do that he missed her being near him, just as when he’d been so irritated that morning when he’d rolled over and that side of the bed had smelled like her. But then she was him to clarify and he paused a moment and turned his head to look at her and found her looking at him. Well, there were many places to start but if the argument had revealed anything it had been where he’d hurt her the most so far.
Rhys turned his head back and stared at the ceiling again. He could always answer ‘everything’ but that seemed to generic despite the long list of infractions. ”For leaving.” He answered, she had yelled it at him and then tried to burn him, so he figured that was probably a good place to start. ”I was—“ ’scared’. But he stopped, that fear was nothing compared to what he felt now with knowing he was going to be a dad. ”I just…I’m sorry.” There wasn’t much he could say on that topic that wouldn’t be a struggle at this point. He let out a sigh and closed his eyes for a second, moving his hand and arm up so he could put it behind his head while the other one lay on his stomach. There was a new level of stress encroaching on him, but it wasn’t like the stress he was used to. After a second he turned to look at her, wondering if that apology was enough though he knew it wasn’t.

Curse Maria's already being comfortable with Rhys. She wanted to be mad at him. In a way she still was. But that anger had seeped deep, below the surface. While considerably calmer it kept her mood slightly more on edge, like a soft boil. His presence was both infuriating and comforting. A conundrum Maria wasn't really sure how to deal with. But, she'd been alone for a week. Left to her own fears. Having someone here, despite him being the source of plenty of pain, was... comforting. Maybe that was why she didn't demand he leave. Because at the end of the day the pain of being alone was worse then the pain of being angry. So, she'd rather be angry.
Their gazes met momentarily, before Rhys looked away. Coward. He should look at her when apologizing. But at the same time, she knew she was no better. If she was willing to apologize for her own jabs at him she would have been looking away too. She didn't stop looking at him though. Just watched him. It took a moment but he finally spit it out. Leaving. A lump leapt into her throat. He was apologizing for what had made her the most angry. Hell, she wasn't angry that he'd gotten her pregnant, as insane as that sounded. No, abandonment was the issue. That's what had hurt her the most. She swallowed the lump in her throat and turned her head to stare at the ceiling. She didn't even know what to say to that. No one had ever apologized for leaving her before. Because, to be honest, no one that had left her could come back. He continued speaking, though he struggled to get it out and simply apologized again.
Maria pursed her lips together. She wanted to be an asshole and tell him to grow up, and that she didn't need him. That his leaving hadn't bothered her, but that had already failed. No, he knew she was angry about that. "There are two things I always hated and feared, Rhys." She started to explain, stopping momentarily, to glance at him out of the corner of her eye, then turn her gaze back up to the ceiling. Unable to look at him as she explained just as he couldn't look at her. "The first is being alone." Considering how many partners she kept, that was a given. "The second is letting people in, so that when they do leave I'm painfully reminded of how pathetically alone I really am." That's what had hurt. Maria didn't know how to define.... Whatever this was. But Rhys had become someone she'd trusted with her thoughts and feelings. But also the way she spoke... The way she said "when they leave" almost made it sound as if she didn't believe anyone ever would stay. As if everyone she opened up to was destined to leave her. "But now I have a new fear that I can't do this alone. But I don't know if I can trust you to stick around."

did i build this ship to wreck?
December 2, 2025 @maria
They’d spent so many months in a comfortable place seeing each other but that was because it had never required much conversation and if there was there were certainly no talks of feelings. And slowly things had begun to change. The first time she’d slept close to him and then they learned a bit more about one another. She’d called him for help, and he’d stayed with her until he’d felt it was safe. He’d never slept well alone and it had gotten worse when he’d left. They’d fought and hurt each other that way but he’d never imagined it would hurt—not from her. Rhys knew there was something to this, even now after that argument it still felt easy to be here and around her than how he would have been if he’d left and gone home instead. Apologizing was not easy for Rhys, he didn’t take kindly to being wrong neither of them ever seemed to fail to find some line they wouldn’t cross when they were mad he just felt he had to say something. There had been pain behind that fire in her eyes, he knew it was his fault.
Rhys listened to her speak, staring at the ceiling. If he had looked at her he knew he would freeze when he tried to speak. They were things he was familiar with himself, and fears of his. Which only made him more annoyed with himself. Her anger and treatment of this whole situation made more sense to him, it was the opposite of what he’d convinced himself that morning he left. Rhys didn’t know why he always seemed to wreck the things that mattered to him in his life, he just seemed ready to sabotage himself than let anyone completely see him. If he thought that her explanation had hurt, he hadn’t quite been prepared for her last confession. There it was. It upset him a little to the point he felt that lump in his throat again but she had said it because he had done it, so who else was there to be mad at than himself. He took a deep breath through his nose and let it out and turned his head to look at her. ”I told you, I’m not going anywhere.” He paused, he knew he didn’t have the credit with her to where his word was fully enough.
He turned his head back, returning to a serious expression as he thought about his own experiences and his own life. ”I’ve spent the majority of my life completely alone.” He spoke, his tone wasn’t angry or upbeat in anyway but more reminiscent as he thought about the orphanage he’d lived in from age five to when he was legally an adult. ”Nobody wanted the weird werewolf kid.” It wasn’t an excuse for his behavior, especially because that was one thing he had learned and remembered was how alone they had both grown up. No parents, no unconditional love—only judgement. He took a shaky breath in and out through his nose and closed his eyes a moment to push down the feelings those memories had attached to them. He turned to look at her again. While he felt committed to this—that he wouldn’t leave he was still terrified and having a hard time comprehending this was even all real and not just some Aware-Wolf induced nightmare. He wasn’t really sure what to say now, either she believed him or didn’t but he knew his way forward and where he wanted to be. Everything else in his brain that was conflicted he would deal with later, his fear of his family knowing and his fear of what he felt toward Maria. Things for another day. "I don't want my kid to ever feel that."

Maria was angry at herself for telling him this much. He didn't deserve it, after taking off. He'd burned a bridge. And yet, here they were. Laying in bed, not looking at each other, or touching. But both here. Talking. Surprisingly calm. It was a rare thing, these quiet moments between them. Maria and Rhys' "relationship" was one of raw emotions. There were those quiet moments where they connected in a way neither had thought possible. Maria hadn't felt a connection like this with someone since... Viola? Someone that still consumed her thoughts, even to this day. But it wasn't romantic, as far as Maria was aware. No, it was the connection of two broken souls. An understanding that only another broken person would get. It was terrifying. Feeling like someone... understood her.
Rhys reiterated what he'd already said. That he wasn't going anywhere. And in that moment, she believed him. Because he could have left. He didn't have to be here. He was choosing to be here now. Maybe not for her, but for the thing growing inside her. Was that enough for her though? She wasn't sure.... She didn't speak though, because she feared she might still speak of some doubts. But, he didn't stop speaking, much to her surprise. Instead, he shared something she'd always known about him, but had never been put into words. He was just as alone as her, unwanted by the world. And finally.. the finally nail in the coffin. He didn't want his child to ever feel that way.
Maria rolled over, still not touching him but at least facing him, her arm under her head like a pillow. "You realize this child will be thoroughly messed up just having us as parents, right?" She started, pausing just a moment. She just knew any child of hers was bound to be trouble. Mixing those genes with Rhys... "But at least they won't feel unwanted. Like we were."

did I build this ship to wreck?
December 2, 2025 @maria
The situation was very complex. Maria was not someone that Rhys was romantically involved in versus just physically, even a little bit intimately, but he didn’t really think so either. The calm that had settled over them was a far cry from the angry intensity at which they had been almost yelling at each other. There never seemed to be a middle ground, the kind you find in relationships or at least from what he’d experienced. That thought reminded him that now things would be very different, he was going to be a father and be responsible for a child and how did he explain that to people in his life like Deva? A problem for a different day though it took him a second to shake the thought. Rhys thought of what had gone through his head the day he left, the connection he’d realized was there and that had frightened him. What were they if not some sort of kindred spirits walking through this world barely carrying their pieces together in some feeble attempt to appear whole? Perspective tended to lead to understanding and that seemed to be the basis for it.
Rhys wasn’t going to fool himself into thinking Maria trusted him as she had before simply because she was the mother of his child. But he had hoped that he had made it perfectly clear he didn’t want their child to have the same fears they did when it came to trusting people in its life. Rhys felt her move and he looked to see her on her side now and looking at him and he thought about her words, she wasn’t…wrong. They would be a family, though a very unconventional one. He thought for a second, he had no idea what he was doing it. It wasn’t as if the orphanage provided an example and his experience with kids was limited. It only added to his anxiety. ”No they won’t.” At least they were in absolute agreement on that note, this child would be loved. Rhys knew he was capable of that even if he was still processing everything, it had been less than twelve hours since he’d even found out in the first place. Just as he loved his siblings, even if he only had a faint memory of his mother anymore.
He wanted to tell her he was scared but he didn’t want her to think he was going to leave again. Though he could only imagine she was as well, she’d also grown up essentially an orphan so they both knew what that void felt like and how the wounds never healed but never quite scarred either. Rhys moved his hands back to lay on his stomach, there was so much on his mind it was hard not to focus on that, he might have been less anxious if the full moon wasn’t two days away. ”I uh—don’t know the first thing about being a father.” Rhys admitted, almost casually, and really he wasn’t sure why he had said it but it had been a floating thought, what example did he have really? Again, he paused, and looked at her again. He knew the anxiety he felt just knowing half a day, let alone how she had felt finding out however long ago and he was off in another country. ”I’m sorry you had to deal with this by yourself.” Pain had never been his intention, but it always seemed the result in these cases.

While much of Rhys' past was a mystery to her, and much of hers was to him, they knew the basics. Enough to feel that connection of empathy. Understanding. They didn't need to share all the dirty details of their upbringing. Neither had good parental figures growing up. Whatever ones they'd had were long gone. Maria tried to remember her parents, though as she got older she realized she remembered less and less. Some things were etched into her memory, however. They'd shaped the way she'd turned out. Her father's obsession with her mother, the desperation after her mother died. Love was a cruel, unnatural thing that drove people to do horrible things. It had driven her father to madness, and ultimately his own death. Her mother, as far as she could remember, was a beautiful and lovely person. But she'd been the source of her father's obsession. She had more memories of that dysfunctional situation then of how they had actually raised her. Then, her grandparents. Vile, horrible people who thought her existence was something to be used. A way to rectify their son's scandal. No, her only real example of a parent had been Elias' mother, though Maria hadn't met her aunt until late into her teens. Far to late to be parented.
So when Rhys mentioned not knowing anything about being a father? She actually chuckled, shaking her head and rolling back onto her back. She rubbed her eyes. What sort of mess was this? "We have nine months to figure it out, or we're fucked." Him being a father. Her... being a mother. Her being pregnant. That alone was going to be a major hurdle. She should probably actually read that paperwork the healer had given her. Aside from the obvious don't drink/smoke (aka, nothing fun), and that a human being was literally growing inside you, Maria knew surprisingly little of pregnancy. And... oh god, what would happen in nine months. She almost flinched, barely managing to stop herself. No, she was not going to think about that now. If she started to focus on all the details at once, she'd be overwhelmed. No. One step at a time.
To her surprise, Rhys was apologizing again. This time for having to deal with this herself. She almost laughed again. "I broke my phone," she admitted. There was even a small hole in the wall on the opposite side of the room, evidence of the phone's destruction. She didn't admit that she'd been mad at him, which was why her phone had been broken to begin with."Of course, if I hadn't broken it I would have realized sooner. You're lucky. You're getting away with a week of anger instead of more." The app she'd used to track this sort of stuff had been on her previous phone. She would have realized her period was late much sooner if she hadn't broken her phone. Though, they would be having a very different conversation probably. She would have had more time to stew on things. Perhaps she'd have made a different decision, without his input.

maybe im already gone ill never be the same
December 2, 2025 @maria
Rhys felt Maria was one of the few people possibly in this world that understood him. There were those that accepted him, his siblings and Deva but whether they understood his perspective and issues was another story. None of his half-siblings had been raised without both parents and had their mothers and even other half-siblings and Deva had never understood why he couldn’t completely give himself to her as she wanted and could to him. Sometimes there wasn’t words, but if you ever felt it then you knew. When Maria had shared those memories of his brother with him, he had felt it and had come to understand that part of her and that anger still held onto. They’d both felt someone incredibly close to them die, but so close that it broke who they were. Now, they were stuck with one another as they were bringing a new life into this world even though he could understand her perhaps more than most he realized he didn’t actually know that much about her and her history, who was Maria? Who really was this woman who was carrying his child? Then again, the same could be said about him. She might remember bits and pieces from that night he’d gotten her from that club but talking about himself had never exactly made him comfortable.
Rhys looked over as she chuckled, he had been thinking out loud, but he also probably correctly surmised that Maria didn’t have the faintest clue about how to be a mother. Nine months. It seemed like a good stretch of time, but he knew it would fly by, and again his anxiety had come back. Though he could sense they were both feeling that growing sense of anxiety, not quite dread because it wasn’t the worst thing but for Rhys it had been a far off dream so he’d never really considered it would happen to him. He tried to focus on the present, what could he do now? ”July…” He muttered, without even thinking about it. His baby would be born in July, it was a busy time of year usually for Curse Breakers though that season really began in the spring and his own birthday was August. With all the thoughts going through his head he was having a difficult time organizing them, he hated how foggy his brain seemed to get before the full moon as it only matched his mood. He rubbed his own eyes, ”Hm, we can probably start planning whatever we need to plan after the full moon passes…”
Rhys looked at Maria when she explained about her phone though he wasn’t sure the significance of it, so his eyebrow was slightly raised as if to question. A week, she had known a full week before he’d shown up back here. As usual their timing seemed impeccable, what if he had stayed in Egypt another month as he had considered? But he’d promised his sister to be home for the holidays and that had brought him home this day. And he thought about the anger they had both expressed earlier, ”So, you’re saying it would have been me instead of your couch?” Rhys looked at her, he understood anger as he carried quite a bit of it himself but while he might punch a hole through the wall she was able to create more damage with her flames and he certainly had never aimed to be on the receiving end of that. Still, he'd made his choice and his commitment and even if it terrified him he would push through with it. ”Well, you’re stuck with me now.” He commented, he didn’t want to get stuck too far in his head because that’s when he tended to just react instead of think about what he was doing and that never ended well.

Maria actually twitched when he said that word. July. July. He didn't have to say what he meant by it. The Healer had mentioned that month, too. That was, if everything went well.... It'd be due. This unborn child. Maria was still trying to process everything, to come to terms with... the situation and what was about to happen. There were moments where she felt this was all a dream, and she couldn't be pregnant at all. But it was real. No matter how many time she pinched herself this wasn't something she'd just wake up from. It.... changed a lot. Too much then she was willing to even think about. Things in her life. In her work. With Rhys. Her entire world was being flipped upside down and she just didn't know how to handle or process it. And unfortunately she would have to process it. Because she couldn't just drown it all out with booze and sex. She couldn't run from this like everything else.
What even was there to plan? Maria hadn't the faintest. Again, she should read those healer's notes when she had a chance... Though the mention of the full moon made her pause. Wait. What exactly would this child be? Rhys was a werewolf. Maria was half Veela. Maria racked her brain, thinking back to her school years. What had she learned about werewolves that was pertinent to this situation? She'd always known a touch, since Elias had been one as well. Like how werewolves weren't a huge threat to her. They couldn't turn other magical beings, and Maria had Veela blood in her veins. So, given a choice a werewolf would always attack someone else/find other prey before going for a part Veela. Though she'd never felt like testing that theory. But that wasn't what she was trying to remember. She was trying to remember if it was hereditary. It couldn't... could it? Rhys and Elias weren't born werewolves. She didn't know about the Greyback girls (as it had never come up if they were/weren't werewolves.). No, the more she thought of it the more sure she was that she'd heard it couldn't be passed down genetically. Not like her Veela blood. This child would take after her in that regard.
Maria felt Rhys's eyes on her and glanced at him out of the corner of her eyes. While he had only been processing this a day, her mind had been reeling a week. Days of fear and dread, waiting for her appointment with a healer. Days of trying to decide what to tell him, if anything. Days of "telling" him, but not getting a response. She'd been stewing on this quite a bit longer then him, which he finally seemed to understand. Though, when he mentioned the couch she stared back up at the ceiling, a very serious look on her face. "I missed." Well... that was reassuring. She wasn't denying wanting to set him on fire only a few minutes before. Though, she really hadn't been aiming for him to begin with, so at least that was reassuring? Maria usually didn't miss if she was really determined to throw fire in your face.

All the unknowns only greatly added to Rhys’ anxiety, and he didn’t even know where to begin in terms of asking questions. They had until July, apparently, to figure it out. Thinking about all this at once sober was exhausting Rhys further, but he’d said he would stay so he was here as much as he had the urge to find something else to occupy his time. A job in Australia or Russia perhaps this time, but then he didn’t want to be flighty when it came to his future son or daughter. And that was another question—was it a boy, was it a girl? Would they all live together as some strange pseudo family? Would it stay with Maria? Rhys was always terrified that despite the potions and precautions he would hurt someone during the full moon and that fear was greatly amplified if either Maria or the baby was at risk. So many things to consider, he didn’t want them to be a werewolf as he had been forced to be—as his siblings had been forced to be.
She responded that she had missed and Rhys looked at her for a couple of seconds, even if he didn’t actually know Maria all that well he never doubted that one day those flames would be sent in his direction by something he did if she meant them to. Their tempers seemed to get the best of both of them and let alone if they were angry at the same time. Her words still ran in his head, as well as the honesty she had spoken them with. If he had been keeping count, he had been the only one that had really lied, but he wasn’t sure how to approach that with all that was on his mind. This situation wasn’t ideal, how do you keep a child from knowing they weren’t supposed to ever exist. It brought him to his own existence—but also Elias’. Their mothers had not chosen to have Fenrir’s sons, but they did and have loved them regardless. He figured that was a good place to start for his new current situation. He let out a sigh, he knew Maria wasn’t thrilled with him, but they were stuck with one another now.
”Do you want me to stay?” Rhys turned and asked, his voice a bit softer than before. A month apart had showed him how much he disliked sleeping alone though even if he’d had company it wasn’t her. But he didn’t blame her if she wanted him gone or would only tolerate him as much as he was the father of their baby. With unclear he was feeling he could only imagine how she was and having sat on this information long as well as him running off when they had finally reached a new level of trust. Every time. Every time he did something like this, he wondered how he got himself in these messes.

Maria was an "act first, think later" person. She lashed out before considering the consequences. It was that trait that had gotten her on the wrong side of a great many people, including Rhys' sisters. Then, no matter how much she screwed everything up, she rarely apologized or tried to fix it. Because she knew once the damage was done there was little chance to fix it. So, while burning him hadn't necessarily crossed her mind, or the harm it would inflict (physically and mentally), she'd just known that she wanted to hurt him and her hands had ignited. That was the thing about fire. Sometimes she could control it, sometimes she couldn't. Sometimes it was just a force unto itself, out of her control and she was just the deliverer of it's chaos. She would have regretted it if she had hit him though. Deeply regret it. Because would she have apologized? Would he have even given her a chance to?
There was a silence between them, and Maria was once again left to her thoughts. Though, he soon broke it, asking if she wanted him to stay. She raised a hand over her head, arm stretched out to the ceiling, her fingers laced with small flames. The only light in the darkening room, as neither had bothered to turn on the light. "Do you think they'll be able to make fire?" She asked instead of answering his own question. Her refusal to answer would be answer enough. She didn't want him to leave, but she was too stubborn to say it. So, she'd change the subject. "Genetically, I'm not supposed to be able to do it. I've never met any other part Veelas that could make fire." It was quite the abnormality. She'd been told that her whole life. Full blooded Veelas did this. It was one of their most defining features, besides the beauty. But it had been proven countless times that their non-full blooded children didn't inherit it. They couldn't create fire like their full blooded Veela family members. So why could Maria? Was it because she was half? But even other half blooded Veelas couldn't do it. Maria was a freak in that regard. So... would her child? Would they somehow inherit this gene that had enabled her to create fire? Whatever gene that was. "Since I can do it when I genetically shouldn't... What are the chanced it'll be able to?" She still wasn't sure if she could say child or baby aloud yet. The thing growing inside her didn't even have a gender yet, that could be told. She wasn't even sure what to refer to the thing as besides "it".

She didn’t answer him, but it didn’t bother him. In fact, had she wanted him to leave she wouldn’t have thrown him off the bed the minute he had touched it after the arguments or even right after he had asked it. It was a relief, while still felt all the fogginess in his head from all his thoughts and anxieties but at least he wouldn’t be stuck with them alone. That had been something he’d kicked himself for when he left, not that he spent every day with Maria but enough that he had grown accustomed to a second warm body in his bed and near him. Rhys looked up when he saw a light and realized it was fire, she wasn’t angry, so he wasn’t completely worried about anything catching but he watched with some interest. She didn’t bring out the flames very often and he’d only seen them in moments of extreme emotion. The howler from a few months ago and even just now when he’d stood his ground and she’d stormed off, it was a different sight like this—when it was controlled. Almost mesmerizing.
She spoke and Rhys looked away from the fire and back at her, his mind was momentarily blank as he hadn’t thought that far ahead yet and also more panic seemed to reach him as he realized his child would be part veela as well, but fire? As if raising children wasn’t difficult enough, but one that could create fire? Rhys didn’t answer right away and listened as Maria explained more about it, more about her. ”Were you always able to do it?” Rhys asked, he had a hard time picturing a child barely walking but their hands aflame. Rhys tried to think through it, but he realized he didn’t know enough. Of everything he had ever read and researched this had never come up. ”I suppose its possible…” He thought out loud, it piqued his intellectual interested which was helping calm his mind a bit. ”Although I find the idea terrifying, its better than a werewolf.” Rhys admitted, as if it wasn’t enough he had to deal with Maria and her pyrotechnic outburst but imagine two of them?
