need a place to hide, but i cant find one near
December 16, 2025 @deva
Rhys walked up to the door of the familiar door that he had seen as he had slammed it close not two months ago the last time he was here. He’d left Deva with tears streaming down her face as he’d walked out as angry as he’d ever been but with was usual as they’d fought. It had been a bad one though and Rhys had hesitated apparating here because he couldn’t even be sure she was home. But he had slept the past two nights, his nightmares worse than ever and his anxiety about Maria and the baby had reached a peak point that day as well. Since he hadn’t been expected to see Maria that day he’d been home, trying to read and do research or just do anything that wasn’t heavy drinking or thinking about the upcoming holidays and how he’d probably have to pretend that nothing was wrong. That he hadn’t seen Maria since Zombie Island and that he was hiding from his siblings that they had a niece or nephew that they would get to meet summer of the following year.
He was sure he looked as awful and stressed as he felt, and he’d walked out of his flat just wanted to go anywhere and this is where he ended up. If she turned him away he supposed he could find a bottle of whiskey and handle his insomnia that way but he wanted to see someone that he knew he could trust but that also cared as much for him as he did for them. He needed a friend, and they could at least be that for each other. Two weeks he’d known and at this rate he wasn’t sure how much longer he could keep it from his family or even some of his friends, it was weighing heavily on him. The one positive was he and Maria were getting along swimmingly, which was only new in the sense of they were actually conversations versus keeping things purely physical. It was…refreshing to have someone to talk to that could even have a hint of understanding of what possibly went on in his head.
Rhys took a breath and knocked on the door and waited, it was a moment before he heard the door open and he saw her and he almost couldn’t speak as various emotions seemed to be clamoring to get out. ”Hey Dev….” He managed to get out, his voice didn’t feel strong. ”I’ll leave if you don’t want me here but….I really need someone to talk to.”

Things had been going very well for Deva of late. Her relationship with Bjorn was going well, although the setback in discovering that he was a pirate had weighed heavily on her at first. She'd considered seeking out Rhys for support but had scrapped that idea in less than a second. After their last fight and his accusations that it was her fault they fell back into the same cycle she'd been quite determined not to make him any sort of right. She could easily do without Rhys and she was determined to prove it. So far she had and she felt like she was better off for it, even though she missed her friend at times. She missed the good times she'd had with him as a friend, but that was all. She didn't long for him in any other way any longer and she was proud of herself for it. She was really much better off now. Yet she didn't expect to see him again, despite the fact they'd always ended up meeting up again before. She thought it'd be different this time, mostly because it felt different for her. She was finally seeing the future much clearer and she was better for it. Still, when she opened the door after the knock she was surprised to see Rhys. For just a little moment she was tempted to slam the door in his face, but she stayed her hand. She was willing to salvage the friendship, or at least for now. She noticed his distress and felt her concern pop up. No matter what their past was, she hated seeing people in pain. He looked miserable. She nodded, although she was a bit worried. "Come in." She said softly, stepping away as she put the water on for tea. He knew the way to go and would follow her if he didn't want to be alone to the point he couldn't wait for a pot of tea. She looked over her shoulder. "What happened? You look horrible Rhys..." Her voice was gentle, as it always was and had been when he was in pain or distress. She just couldn't be cruel to him in those moments. It was totally possible that it was about to change, but for now she had no idea of the news he was about to overwhelm her with. rhys alexander greyback

She opened the door. Thank Merlin. It wasn’t the first time he’d crawled his way over here over something, though what was on his mind was worse than anything he’d been sulking over as far as he knew. And his heart could have leapt in gratitude when she didn’t turn him away. A small part of him knew that it would always be a possibility that she would actually turn him away but no matter what he said to anger her or push her away and whatever she would say in retaliation he would always love her and on occasion he would tell her as much but she still asked too much. He was invited in and he was thankful still and also because of the chill outside and he followed her inside and closed the door behind him. Immediately she asked what happened and he tried to open his mouth to speak but there was a slight lump in his throat that seemed to block the words from coming out. Rhys needed her as his support right now, but he was accustomed to her nature of being there wholeheartedly—as a partner would.
He swallowed hard. His anxiety lately had been making it difficult to function. ”I just—I haven’t been sleeping.” He admitted, that was the truth though it wasn’t an uncommon thing in his life the stress of this was different than even the panic his nightmares sent him into. ”I’m…” He trailed off again, crossing his arms tightly since that seemed to comfort him some. ”I’m—I messed up.” He finally got out. He was using whatever words his brain was willing to let him speak at this point. ”I don’t know what to do. I messed up Dev and I’m scared.” Scared. That had been the first time he’d said that out loud since he’d found out that Maria was pregnant. Rhys had certainly been feeling it, not that saying it out loud helped him feel better at all. But Deva would understand, she knew his broken past and his fear of this. She knew.

Whatever it was clearly impacted him a lot. He didn't tell her instantly, which meant that it was bound to be serious. She felt her heart break a little bit for him, but at least she could be here in a better capacity than normal. She wouldn't be tempted to be something to him that he didn't need in his life. Things finally seemed to be getting less complicated and she was glad for it. He hadn't been sleeping, which couldn't be a good sign. She went through the motions almost mechanically as she set the pot of tea, grabbed the cups and the tea egg and put everything on the coffee table. She silently waited for him to find the words but she noticed it was going rather badly. She gently guided him towards the sofa. "Sit Rhys." She said gently as she sat herself down and poured them both a cup of tea. She knew he tended to prefer whiskey but really, she didn't need him drunk right now. Things never seemed to get better when they started drinking. Deva looked at him and she could easily tell that whatever had happened had shaken him to his very core. She'd never seen him this messed up and she was very worried what had made him this scared and unstable. She furrowed her brow slightly as she looked at him. "What's going on Rhys? Why are you scared?" She had no idea but she didn't expect it to have much to do with the usual issues. People hating him for who his father was and whatnot. He knew family was a touchy subject but she wasn't quite sure what to expect and that scared her a little bit. She didn't know Rhys to be irresponsible, quite the opposite so the news he was about to bring was about the last thing she'd expect.... rhys alexander greyback

need a place to hide, but i cant find one near
December 16, 2025 @deva
He followed her to the couch and sat down and she poured him tea. It was exactly what he could expected from her. Her good nature and heart was trying to comfort him even after all that was said last time. Every time they fought and crawled back to one another he hated himself for whatever was said and however he had acted. It was like he was sixteen again willingly breaking his own heart into pieces thinking he was saving her from something. Deva knew he already had chronic insomnia though he’d always slept better with her at his side, or Maria he thought. That only brought more anxiety. They had been getting along a lot better the past couple of weeks, they were going to be parents they might as well be friends. But Rhys still held onto whatever had caused him to flee in the first place. That closeness he felt to her, but because she understood him so well. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d looked like this in front of her, perhaps in school? When his anxiety would get the best of him and his anger.
He took a breath and rubbed his hands over his face and paused. She was his friend, he could tell her, right? She would do what she did in providing comfort and the emotional support. That was Deva, his Deva. ”I…I was seeing someone.” He paused but then spoke quickly to clarify. ”But it wasn’t anything serious, just a casual…thing.” They had never ‘dated’. The closest they had come was that bottle of bourbon that first night and that short time at Zombie Island—her hand in his, they were supposed to carve pumpkins. ”But now she’s….” He couldn’t get the words out again. He wasn’t even sure if he had really said it out loud like this yet. ”But, it wasn’t supposed to happen.” Rhys turned in his spot on the couch to face his body more towards Deva, he wasn’t even thinking about the tea she had poured him. ”I just, I don’t know what I’m supposed to do. I told her I would stay, but I don’t….” He paused again looking off into the room before looking back at Deva and slowly, softly grabbing her hands. ”I don’t love her, not like I love you and I just—I just don’t know what to do.”
Staying as he had told Maria he would had something to do with duty but also his own abandonment issues had driven that. He’d never had parents, a family, none of that until he met Jamie at seventeen and he’d never let his own child feel what that void and loneliness had felt like. Deva would understand, she knew him.

There were a million thing she could have thought up and a thousand ways to feel on hearing him this upset. To hear him struggling to get his feelings out. It was like it had been in school, the one time he'd actually had the courage to give them a chance. Whatever this was, it had to be bad if he was willing to open up to her for once. That alone was enough to have her worried and concerned for his well being. He hadn't let her in and see him vulnerable in so many years that it almost hurt that he choose now of all moments to do so. It didn't matter though, not really. Nothing was going to change between them this time. They were just friends and nothing more, Rhys made that abundantly clear last time he'd been around. She was almost surprised to notice there was no little stab of pain or jealousy when he mentioned he'd been seeing somebody else. It didn't mean anything to her any longer. This was Rhys, he didn't commit. She'd have been a lot more surprised if he actually had chosen to enter into a relationship with somebody. There was nothing there that hurt her, yet. But now she's--. He didn't finish the sentence but up to some point he didn't have to. A sense of dread crawled over Deva as she knew which ending was implied. He could imagine that he wouldn't be able to say the words. He was too messed up and too afraid to be like his dad to have wanted a child. Or at least, when he was with her that had factored into their billion break ups. It was like he was pushing a dagger into her chest at an agonisingly slow speed. It was painful for him, but didn't he realise that this actually was painful to her? All she'd wanted and asked for and he'd accidentally given it to somebody else? He'd promised to stay. It was like he was planning to kill her. Then he took her hands in his, softly and gently, like the promise of tomorrow she'd asked but never gotten. He was twisting the knife in her chest, making the pain worse. Then he claimed he loved her and the million splinters the knife made in her heart all felt like they'd burst into flame. For just a moment she was too stunned to even move. Then, she pulled the dagger from her chest, letting the splinters burn. Whatever he thought that love was, he had it all wrong. She gently pulled her hands back, a strange calm settling in her body. She was leaving this place tonight, just as soon as Rhys left or fell asleep. He'd know he wasn't welcome when the house would be empty the following morning if he choose to stay. "You do as you told her." She said, but there was no love or affection in her voice. It was calm and distant but not yet full of ice. "You stay and make sure the kid isn't as messed up as you got to be because of your dad." It was perhaps a bit of a low blow to make to him but it was about time he heard it. She waved her wand and a bottle of whiskey flew their way, which she stuffed in his hands to fill the void she'd left when pulling her own back. She picked up her cup to make sure he couldn't try that again and took a sip of her tea. "You're going to get your act together, read a lot of parenting books and prepare yourself as well as you can." She said, trying her best to be as supportive as she possibly could be. She waved her wand again and in the bedroom her clothes started to crawl into a backpack, far outside his sight. She could feel the pain and anger she was suppressing building in her chest, but wasn't quite ready to give in to it yet. Rhys was supposed to be her friend and she couldn't destroy him while he was already down like this. It was time to be the better person, like her parents had always taught her to be. Seems they'd been right about him after all, all he'd do was hurt her. She sat back slightly, still holding her teacup like it was the pin that kept the explosion of her emotional grenade at bay. She smiled at him politely but the smile didn't even get close to reaching her eyes. "And of course in due time you and the girl can come visit. You'll need to keep bonds with the friends you have in case you two ever need somebody to watch the child for a day or so, since I'm assuming you're not changing your career. You'll be off a lot and it's wise to ensure you have a broad circle in the area to help out if you need it." She looked him dead in the eyes at that point and this time there was a very clear wall of ice between him and the person he'd gotten so used to being around. "And of course it goes without saying that I never want to hear you comment on my relationship again or claim you love me if you wish for yourself and your kid to stay welcome in this household." She took a deep breath to contain her emotions and took another sip of tea. "Because this is the worst you've ever hurt me in my life and if this is your version of love, I don't want it." To be loved by him was to be in pain and she was done torturing herself. "I'll be out of town starting tomorrow. I'm going to see my sailor and try and give this a place, much as you should find a way to cope with this because if you run I swear you'll never set foot into my house again and I'll curse you into oblivion the next time I lay eyes on you." She took another calming sip of tea. Yes, this was going splendid. rhys alexander greyback

how do i live? how do i breathe? when you're not here i'm suffocating
December 16, 2025 @deva
Rhys couldn’t imagine what he would be doing right now if he didn’t have someone he trusted as much as he trusted Deva. He had close friends, very close friends but she was always the first one he went to. Maybe she was more sympathetic, she had a soft spot for the werewolf that had broken her heart so many years ago whereas his other friends were less so. Even if they hadn’t actually dated since those days, he’d never reacted all that well when she would date other men. That and he didn’t like to see her hurt either. She understood, or so he thought, his fears and his anxieties. A father? Who in their right mind would think the son of such a monster would make a decent father and why would he want to pass on any of his own traits to a child who would instantly be outcasted by their name? Fenrir was still alive and out there somewhere though Rhys hadn’t run into him in over two decades but as long as he was how could they ever redeem the name?
It had always been part of Deva’s plan and in the beginning and it had been fun and cute to talk about a future such as that. A house with a white picket fence and three kids playing in the yard. What houses would they have been sorted in? Rhys a former Slytherin and Deva a former Hufflepuff made quite the opposites at times, would they have her cheery nature or his more subdued one? After a while though as the fog lifted in the honeymoon phase of their relationship it had begun to hit him a different way and just became a trigger instead. Rhys felt her pull her hands away and he looked up at her, when you had someone like this in your life for so long you tended to notice and sense things. She knew his moods as much as he knew hers and something had shifted ever so slightly but he felt it. And he confirmed it when she spoke, her tone less sympathetic than usual and more to the point. Serious. More a tone he would have used.
’You stay and make sure the kid isn’t as messed up as you…’ Rhys sat up a bit straighter where he sat, his face more serious now. This was different, these were words said when they were fighting not when one came to the other for comfort. But before he could speak, she summoned a bottle of whiskey and placed it where her hands had just been. It wasn’t often that Rhys was speechless but between his anxiety and now growing annoyance he wasn’t sure what to make of it yet. ”I—um—I just don’t want to abandon them like I was.” He mumbled, staring at the bottle in his hands now. One of his favorites, she seemed to keep it handy for him and he was wholeheartedly tempted to open it but the way she had just handed it to him left a guilty feeling in his chest. She was dismissing him. Rhys placed the bottle on the coffee table, he was used to being dismissed but it was a different feeling when someone so close to you did it. It did make him upset, or at least his annoyance was growing and mixing with everything else he was feeling.
Still unsure of what to make of what had just happened he didn’t say anything and only looked at her as she began to drink her tea and continued to speak. But, after the first sentence he chose to not look at her and literally anywhere else, he could feel the hint of condescension in her voice which only added to his current mood. But she paused and he looked back at her and their eyes met. There it was the shift he had felt. She was, angry? Rhys shook his head and scoffed. ”Claim? You know I love you and have since we were sixteen, but you know that isn’t enough in this world.” His panic had subsided in place of his growing anger. A temporary fix for that but he knew it would be back later. ”You act like I’m doing this on purpose, I didn’t plan for this Dev. You think this is what I want?” And of course she brought up that damn sailor and he thought about commenting on that but then he would need that bottle of whiskey. ”I came to you because I trust you, because I’m in something way over my head and I thought I could come to you like we always do for each other.” And she was turning her back on him. It hurt, quite a bit more than he expected. He’d admit that not to mention he tended to not do well when someone turned their back on him in the middle of a conversation.

A part of Deva wanted to scream and yell at him, but she also figured she'd come to regret it. Despite their history and the pain she was feeling at what was happening, she still cared about him. He mentioned he didn't want to abandon his child like he had been and she knew that he wouldn't deep in her heart. He wouldn't put the kid through the same things he'd gone through. "You won't." She said calmly and on that point she easily sounded very comforting. He was going to be a father and she wouldn't be part of it. It was just the way things were and seeing his reaction to actually becoming a dad made it very clear he never had been right for her. He seemed to hate every moment of going through it and that would have made it a hardship for her if they'd been in that boat together. No, it was better this way even if it hurt more than she imagined it would. Perhaps she'd been a little hard on him, but she needed him to be clear on the point that she wasn't his rebound for affection any longer. He sounded angry with his words but she couldn't care less. "You're right Rhys. It's not enough and it never has been." She smiled slightly, although the distance was still between them. "I'm sorry it took me this long to see that." Her apology was genuine, now that she started to see everything she hadn't wanted to see before. He'd never wanted to be a father in the way she had always wanted to be a mother. They had been unevenly matched from the beginning and he was the only one smart enough to realise it at first. He just wasn't smart enough to let go before he caused her more pain. She hadn't been smart enough to let go either. She sighed for a moment, pinching the bridge of her nose before putting her cup of tea down. She had to be strong now, if only to be a decent friend to him. It had to be worth something still. "I know you don't want this." She said calmly, even though a part of her doubted this. Just because he was terrified didn't mean he didn't want it without knowing. She was sure enough that he hadn't wanted it this way though. She put a hand on his knee gently. "I'll try to be there for you as a friend but I'm a bit overwhelmed right now." She was using all patience she had in order not to blow up at him after all. "I just don't know what you expect of me. Things are never going back to the way they used to be between us. I can only be your friend from now on so I'm afraid that has to be enough for you." She knew she was skating on thin ice here, if nothing else then in terms of her patience. She just wanted to have her boundaries very clear this time. No more grey area's, no more acting against better judgment. Maybe it would improve their friendship but she was a bit apprehensive since this was starting to feel like the start of a fight and if this turned into a fight it was sure to bigger than ever before. She was sure she couldn't take that much right now. rhys alexander greyback

how do i live? how do i breathe? when you're not here i'm suffocating
December 16, 2025 @deva
She assured him that that she had faith he wouldn’t abandon his child, just as he had sense before within himself his anxieties over this was overshadowed by his almost crippling abandonment issues. Rhys knew he could be rough around the edges and didn’t always think before he spoke, but he still had a heart somewhere inside of him, albeit it had been thrown around a bit and had been cracked and broken but it could still feel. The apprehension to now be responsible for another life—one that might behave like him, look like him. Would it have his curly hair or his eyes? His father’s eyes. His temper or introverted nature. Is this what every new father felt? The fear of that responsibility? He didn’t think so because when he saw parents with their children walking around Diagon Alley they just seemed so happy. He used to watch the families before boarding the train wishing them well and giving them hugs and saying they would seem them for Christmas. That was all he had ever wanted and now it was a possibility and instead of joy he just couldn’t breathe.
He felt angry, though enough that he could still calm himself if he really wanted to, but the anger felt better than the panic that had been threatening to drown him just a few moments ago. She spoke again and he looked up at her, he wanted to protest but he didn’t. The lump that had been in his throat returned. She wasn’t wrong. The heavy feeling in his chest also slowly returned, while he could mentally accept that she was right in her words his heart was telling him otherwise. He looked away, clenching his jaw to fight down everything that he was trying to feel all at the same time. ”No…” He spoke softly, she had been everything. More than enough, but he didn’t respond yet as he wasn’t sure how to express what he was feeling and also blocking the temptation of that bottle of whiskey out of his mind. It would help him numb everything, he needed to numb it. The fear, the panic, the pain—he didn’t want any of it.
Rhys looked back at her when she placed a hand on his knee, it was comforting especially when she had pulled back earlier. ”I know it can’t be the same, love.” He spoke softly as if he was thinking out loud. ”Please Dev, you know you mean everything to me. You’re the first person who ever made me feel not alone.” He knew he was grasping but he was betting on how much she loved him back and hopefully he didn’t overplay his hand. Rhys gently grabbed her had with his own, it was warm and small in his own but felt natural—felt good. She wanted him to have a wakeup call? Well he was certainly on his way there to one. She was trying in her usual kind way to pull away from him and he could feel with every word that came out of her mouth and the idea that she was ‘leaving’ him in that way was just overwhelming for him. She had always been there for him. Always. He could count on it, like a safety net. ”Merlin…I can’t believe I’m going to be a father…”

It was going to be challenging, that was for sure. She knew she was likely to resent him if she didn't take some proper time to sort through all of this mentally but to abandon him in his hour of need was cruelty she wasn't capable of. She sighed deeply, not sure if the message she was sending was actually reaching him but as long as he wasn't putting the moves on her it'd be fine. She could keep him at arms length and gently keep reminding him that he couldn't get closer than than any longer. His words felt cruel nonetheless. She meant everything, but it wasn't enough. Only the knowledge that there was no happy ending possible for them if he had given in to her wishes kept her somewhat sane. The panic she'd seen in his eyes? Not what she needed in her life. She just had to remind herself of that. "You won't be alone. You never were. I'll be here for you and you'll always have your kid if you choose that road and I believe you will. You might not have wanted it, but I always knew you'd be a great dad if you ended up in the situation." She sighed deeply. That was part of why this was so hard on her. She'd known but she hadn't been able to make him see it for himself. "I can help you look for some books on parenting I guess. I'll also be able to do some babysitting when the time is there, although I'll have to plan it around harbour time. I don't really want a kid around in the limited time I have with my boyfriend." She wriggled her nose slightly, attempting to figure out logistics that might work in her mind. Still her heart burned and ached. When he seemed to finally realise he was going to be a father she couldn't help and smiled in spite of herself and her own feelings on the matter. "I can't quite believe it either just yet. It'll be okay. You're not going to be in it alone. It sound like you've got the mother to take care of most of the stuff with you and I'll be able to play the part of the aunt when needed. The kid will have a peculiar family I guess but they'll never be alone." She mused, almost as if to herself. It was odd, peculiar but not a bad thing. She wasn't sure what this meant and she was still dying to make her way out of the house to actually allow herself space for her emotions (and some destruction along with it) but for now she was managing. She gently squeezed his hand. "It'll be okay." There, he'd be fine in the end and so would she. She had Bjorn now, a thought she was clinging to almost feverishly. It took a lot of faith in her captain to keep herself from falling apart and she was sure she wouldn't have been able to manage if she hadn't had him. She would have blown up in his face ages ago and told him never to show his face at her house ever again. It didn't seem like the best plan since she'd eventually come to regret it but it was the easy way out from time to time. Sometimes easy was the only thing possible in complicated situations but she was glad she was managing to keep her emotions in check this time. rhys alexander greyback

how do i live? how do i breathe? when you're not here i'm suffocating
December 16, 2025 @deva
She continued to provide encouragement and it helped some. Maria was hardly a gentle personality and compared to the former Hufflepuff. It was now more than ever that Rhys realized how much he depend on her in his life, he’d come straight to her the second he’d come back to the UK after working all of the previous year and avoiding mourning his brother’s death and she’d been there. The fights hadn’t mattered, it hadn’t kept them apart for too long and he just felt that she would always be there for him in that capacity. Her words were echoes of what she’d said to him in the past, ’he would be a great dad’. He didn’t even know where to begin, he’d never been raised with a parent so how was he supposed to know how to do this. Despite everything Rhys wasn’t completely blind, this can’t have been easy to hear and that was the risk he had taken coming here but he hadn’t known where else to go that wasn’t a bar.
But his years perked up for a moment. ’Boyfriend.’ So the sailor was still in the picture after all, but still—it had only been a couple of months so how serious could it have been? Her support was still unwavering, which was heartwarming but just what he’d expected from her. Rhys took a breath and let it out. ”Thanks Dev.” He muttered but he looked at her, there had been times he wished he could have just given her what she wanted, everything she had wanted and maybe he could have been happy but now it just didn’t seem possible with his new circumstances. She sat close to him and he was still hold her hand, but he turned a little and slowly let it go. Her being so close to him he could smell her usual perfume, one that he liked as well, and it was comforting having her so close to him because it meant she wasn’t pushing him away.
Rhys leaned in a bit, and with the hand that had just let go of hers he reached up and pushed her hair out of her face. He’d always liked her eyes and didn’t see why she hid them away. ”I’m always happy with you.” He commented, but he didn’t bring his hand back and instead he let it brush her cheek. ”That sailor is a lucky guy.” Rhys was aware of what he was doing, and it was because he’d done it before. While he wasn’t perfect himself, he didn’t condone ignoring certain boundaries, but it can’t have been that serious at this point between them. Just like her other suitors that she used to tell him about only for them to break her heart not long after. She always came back to him.

She had to be honest, there was a sense of relief when he let her hand go. It felt better that way now. While she wanted to be his friend that was all she wanted to be. It was all she could handle being. He'd have to be like any of her other female friends, just somebody to hang out with and have fun with, but all very decent. She was aware that finding a new balance between them could be tricky but she was certain they could figure it out. Now that he was going to be a dad he'd have plenty of things that concerned him a lot more than she would, even if he didn't realise it yet. For one he'd committed so that meant the girl definitively got a fair amount of imput on his time to help her out with the pregnancy and if Deva had any say then he'd help her as much as possible. They got in this mess together so he was supposed to be there to help her get through it. His thanks, muttered as it was, ended up very much appreciated. She didn't feel quite as angry, although a part of her was still screaming in the background. She'd get to that eventually in a place and time it wasn't as destructive. Possibly when she was grabbing a broom to fly over the ocean looking for Bjorn. First a port key to get in the general vicinity though. She'd have to send him a patronus to let him know she was on her way. Conjuring that up with so many things in her head was probably going to be challenging, but feeling the butterflies as she thought of Bjorn made her hopeful that she'd manage it. He made her happy and it would be a thing of beauty if the way he made her feel helped her get in touch with him when she so desperately needed him. Rhys seemed somewhat determined to mess her up though, as he stroked some hair from her face, his fingers brushing her cheek. She sighed deeply as she gently grabbed his wrist to remove his hand from her face. It wasn't like that any longer. She gave him a slightly wry smile. "I think I'm the lucky one for having him. Turns out my sailor is actually a captain. Not just that, he's the rare kind that doesn't mind taking me along on his journeys on occasion." She found herself smiling despite herself as she released his wrist again, having brought it further from her face. "I think that was the best vacation I've had in years." She wasn't fully sure what she was hoping to achieve by telling him that. Maybe just that he'd take a step back. So far it didn't seem like he was accepting of her new relationship just yet. He'd have to be in time, since Bjorn hadn't shown any intentions of leaving her (in the relationship sense of course) and she definitively had no intentions of breaking up with him. For once the rules could be damned (just a little bit) if that meant spending more time with him. She disapproved his profession and she was sure he knew but while it should have stopped her, it didn't. He truly was a pirate, although Rhys didn't have to know that. Her pirate captain had stolen her heart and she couldn't even be angry with him for it. rhys alexander greyback

This was almost the same as all the other times, they had a soft spot for one another, and it always seemed to trump whomever she was dating and, on the occasion, he did date someone as well. Sure, he was going to be a father and be responsible for a child and Maria would always be in his life, but he’d never let go of his love for Deva even when he pushed her away the most. Whatever he felt for Maria was newer and he didn’t know what direction that would take them, there was a connection there. There was also a spark but one that tended to create an inferno when they were together rather than something comfortable. Rhys didn’t know how to describe it, but it was strong whatever was there and strong enough to have scared him all those weeks ago when he took that job in Egypt. With Deva it was more comfortable, she would make a good wife and mother one day and Rhys had recognized that. She had a good heart.
She moved his hand from her face, and he had to admit that it hurt, enough to remember how annoyed he had been a few minutes before. This was different, but why? What was different aside from Rhys’ news of fatherhood? It didn’t sit well with him and that feeling of dread like she was pulling away came back. His instinct was to not let her. She spoke again of the sailor and Rhys pulled his hand back when she released it, obviously that hadn’t worked and trying again never worked either in his experience. But she kept pushing him away when he was physically near—he got that message loud and clear even if he wasn’t happy about it at all. Still, he couldn’t help but scoff a bit and shake his head. She didn’t get it, Rhys had traveled the world and met so many different kinds of people. This sailor, whoever he was, was probably like the rest of them but she had her hopes so high. ”Vacation……c’mon Dev, you can’t be serious?” They’d obviously had their fun which Rhys felt a tiny bit of jealousy about but after all these years it wasn’t what it used to be.
Rhys stood up, arms crossed tightly around his chest. He was never one to force things, but he couldn’t stop how upset he was feeling. He had a kid on the way, one that he wasn’t prepared for and Deva was pushing him away in all ways possible. There was a heavy feeling in his chest, he needed her, and she was emotionally somewhere else. He had his back turned and looked toward the window, ”You think he’s going to come back now that he’s had his fun?” He spoke very calm-like, and he couldn’t help what he was saying. Maybe if this was just him in the aftermath of that last fight versus the entire array of life changing things happening, he might not have been so cruel. Rhys turned around to face her, arms still crossed. ”I’ve met his type all over the world, it all ends the same.”

Three weeks, it had been three weeks of heaven. No drama, no Rhys to mess things up for her or to mess with her head. Even if it was quite a while back, it had been three perfect weeks and she still hadn't been ready to say goodbye at the end of them. By now it had almost been a month since she'd last seen him but she was pretty sure he was planning on coming home for Christmas, even though she didn't receive a date or location just yet. He'd be there, she had complete faith in him. Not even Rhys' words would make her doubt him, although it seemed as though Rhys wanted her to doubt him. It didn't really sit well with her. He'd always been a little jealous but she wasn't ready to accept that from him at this point. She'd lost opportunities holding out hope that he'd commit to her and this wasn't an opportunity she was willing to even consider giving up. No, her heart well and truly belonged to another man now. She crossed her arms when he created the distance, feeling his frustration and reading it clear as day on his face. "I'm deadly serious." She replied, both honestly and a little coldly. "He sailed back from the Baltics because I was having a bad day and proceeded to take me on the ship with him for three wonderful weeks. I managed to relax so that I could get back to work again when I got back and he treated me perfectly." She said, forcing herself to keep her voice calm. She didn't want to fight and was hoping he'd be able to let it go and respect her boundaries and relationship at the same time. It didn't seem too likely from his behaviour but she was holding out hope. It was probably a mistake to hope for anything with Rhys though. When Rhys went off suggesting he wasn't going to come back Deva felt herself tear up, both in frustration and in pain that he was going this far to try and tear her from Bjorn. She balled her fists and took a deep breath before she responded. "I know he's coming back." But then the suggestion that Rhys had met his type and that it was bound to end a certain way hurt her badly. Bjorn was different and he always had been. Rhys just wasn't willing to accept that. "Rhys...." She said, pleading with everything she had. "Please don't do this. Just stop, please." She was nearly begging him at this point and looked at him through her tears. "You're hurting me." Yet she knew she was practically begging a wall to move. When Rhys got like this he hardly ever listened properly. She'd yelled at him so often that she knew that much for sure. She hadn't really tried begging before but there was nothing so far that had been worth it. This time she wasn't sure why, but she wanted to preserve their friendship. Give that some time to heal so they could come out better for it, as friends. Yet Rhys seemed determined to destroy what bridges were left to burn and she knew she couldn't stop it. At best she could deal with the wreckage he'd made but she was tired of trying to rebuild ruins. This time she knew that his choices were his last ones. No more rebuilding for her. Not even the near decade of friendship was worth it any longer if all he did was hurt her. It was usually a few months between each fight before they saw each other. Maybe it was time she got herself a new apartment if he was going to carry this through. rhys alexander greyback

how do i live? how do i breathe? when you're not here i'm suffocating

She was making it sound like a fairy tale, that he had done these grand things to impress her, but any sailor could have said that they came from some far away place at a moments notice. It only made him shake his head, but he told himself it wasn’t jealousy or disappointment, but he was just looking out for her and how she was inevitably going to get her heart broken by this man. It would be just like last time where she was going to defend some sailor, she had known a matter of weeks against him. How long had they known each other now? How long had they been such integral parts of each other’s lives, and he was being thrown aside from some adventurer that could take her sailing. That was the part that hurt him the most, he needed her now more than ever. That unconditional emotion was what he needed from her right now to feel some sort of stability and she was pulling away and he could feel it.
Rhys looked at her, his own arms crossed though he looked away when he saw the tears forming in her eyes. He just couldn’t do anything right, could he? It didn’t matter what he said he’d always caused her tears and never ones of joy. She pleaded, but for what? For him to just roll over and let he sail away in the sunset with this mystery man? No. She always had come back to him, always. But Rhys felt that feeling in his chest, this time was different, but his stubbornness and his own pain was outweighing everything else. ”Stop what, Dev?” He spoke, his voice softer than before. ”I’m just telling you the truth.” He might have been more convinced and even more threatened if this mystery man was a Lawyer or some Ministry worker who sat behind a desk all day, but a sailor? ”I need you, not him. You barely know him, but you know me.” Really he was grasping at whatever he could. How in the world was he supposed to deal with being a father when he didn’t have her support, her love? ”You know I don’t want to hurt you.” He said in almost a whisper, but he always ended up doing so.
