i just feel like I'm condemned to wear someone else's hell
December 17, 2025 vasilia abigail fortescue
Rhys was surlier than he’d ever remembered being and it had been his continuous mood for the better part of twenty-four hours. He’d taken that bottle of whiskey that had been put in his hands and polished it off to numb his pain, this morning’s pain had been mostly his hangover but once that had mostly worn off, he’d needed to numb it all again. She was done, and not just like their fights before where they were sure they would never see other once again. No, this time was different, and he had felt it the entire time he had been there with her. She had pulled away and no matter what he did he couldn’t get rid of the void he felt. How does one fix the empty space someone had occupied for the better part of ten years? It was all still fresh in his mind, but he hadn’t talk to anyone about it, Rhys wasn’t stupid—he knew what they would all say. It was what they had been saying for years. Why did he drag the poor girl around like that, either commit to her or let her live her life. They’d been right because now he just felt she’d thrown him aside.
Rhys entered the Violent Hound. It was a bit crowded for a weeknight, but he didn’t mind the noise. For once it was helpful in keeping him out of his own thoughts. For a moment he paused, his normal routine would have been to sit at the bar, eat something and drink whatever it had been paired with. He hadn’t thought about how much of a routine it had actually become but it seemed to be a part of his life as much as staying with Maria most of the week. Rhys knew himself and knew that he was hardly good company at the moment and instead found a small table near the back to sit down at, he supposed he just wanted to hide in plain sight but somewhere that had more whiskey than he currently had available at home and wallow in his misery. A waitress approached him and asked him what he wanted to drink, and he asked for a whiskey but also asked her to keep them coming and to start a tab. He could have sat at home and drank, but it had become too quiet. His life had become so quiet compared to what he was used to and even just being home this time of the year was different.
Rhys looked around the pub, he had been drinking prior to arriving here and it was starting to reach his head and was well on his way to having a night like before but he had grown tired of just sitting on his couch and he didn’t need Maria’s attitude over his excessive drinking and pining and also that she couldn’t partake. He wasn’t in the mood.

Vasilia loved the Christmas season. It was a great time of year for a number of reasons. Business at the pub was also booming, doing quite well. Pubs always seemed to do well, but especially so when the weather turned cold. It was quite different from the ice cream parlour in that sense. Vasilia was... well, feeling better, she supposed. Taking things a little easier, letting other people share in the business burdens. It had also been a bit required after she got sick last month... But that was a story for another day. Tonight, she was just happy to be able to work like normal. She'd primarily been working in the kitchens tonight, as they'd run out of shephards pies, so she had to whip up a few more.
Smiling like she always did, she brought the latest order out, setting it down on the table that had ordered it, got their drink refill orders, then headed to the bar. That was when someone mentioned opening a tab for Rhys. Ah, Rhys. He'd been a regular lately. Poison of choice? Whiskey. Lots of whiskey. He didn't get fancy about it either, which was something Vas could respect. So, as they fixed it drink, Vas stepped up, offering to run it over to him. The waitress almost let out a sigh of relief. Apparently, Rhys could be prickly and standoffish, something Vasilia didn't really understand how as she'd always had good conversations with him (though the employees often joked that Vasilia could get even the roughest of patrons to purr like a kitten.). She glanced towards his table, recognizing the mood, and took up his glass, crossing the pub to set it down in front of him. "You're got that look again, Rhys. Need someone to talk to, or double shots?"

Rhys looked around. His head wasn’t spinning but he could feel what he’d drank already beginning to take over his brain but not enough to take over his thoughts. It was times like this that he’d cursed his own tolerance for what it took to numb what he was feeling and to stop what he was thinking. Still, all that misery was also turning into anger the more he thought about it. Who was she to judge him? It had been the both of them in this game and she pushed the blame on him. Imagine that, thrown aside from a sailor Rhys was certain she would never see again, and, in this moment, he swore he would turn her away when she came crawling to him just as she had done to him when needed her support. The unlikely plan he was formulating in his head was interrupted and he looked up to see who was speaking to him, the dark look in his eyes softened when he recognized the red head and she had brought him hopefully some relief.
Was she taking over for the waitress? He didn’t mind, the waitress had been over friendly for his current mood and the last thing he really wanted was anything that reminded him of sunshine nearby. Vas pointed out his look and he picked up the glass she had brought him, it wasn’t the fanciest or even his favorite whiskey, but he knew it would get the job done. Besides, his favorite only reminded him of her and how’d she’d handed it to him when he’d asked for help. ”And what look is that?” He wasn’t even bothering to pretend he wasn’t out of sorts tonight, considering how he felt he knew he didn’t have nearly enough energy for that, but a friendly face did help if even just a tiny bit. ”Talking never seems to end well, I’ll take the shots.”

Oh yeah, Rhys was in one of his moods. To be honest, Rhys in general wasn't a very happy, or outgoing person. He always came across as rough around the edges. Like he was ready to pick a fight, or run away. Very much the loner. But Vasilia could see that he was also someone quite troubled. He rarely came in without something on his mind. Her smile softened as he spoke, his words only seeming to confirm her suspicions. "Like you have the weight of the world on your shoulders and you don't know how to get out from under it." Something was weighing on his mind. That was why she'd asked what he wanted. More alcohol or someone to talk to. Because when someone had that look? Well, they definitely needed one of the two. Rhys though typically leaned towards the alcohol option, as he confirmed a moment later.
Vasilia could already tell that she might need to keep a close eye on Rhys tonight. He seemed more... disheveled then usual. Something must have happened. Something clearly weighing on his mind, and he had a look about him like he just wanted to drink until he forgot everything. Mentally she made a not to keep an eye on his tab, to see how much he was drinking, just in case. Vas didn't like cutting people off, but when they had that look? Well, it was always better to have an eye out. Just in case. "Coming right up. Want anything else?" Since he wasn't in a talking mood, yet, she'd tread carefully. She wouldn't push him to talk unless he wanted to. Until he was ready.

December 17, 2025 vasilia abigail fortescue
The Greybacks were full of very distinctive personalities where Rhys was not the people person of any of them. That would most likely be left to Jamie and her usual sunny disposition. Truthfully, he’d been avoiding all of them a little bit, but it was also a busy time of the year so he could get away with it but less and less so the closer it got to Christmas which was just over a week away. What he was supposed to tell them, his not-girlfriend finally dumped him and oh—you’re going to have a niece or nephew come next summer with the one person you want to hex off the face of the earth. Rhys’ life had never been easy, but his life at that very moment seemed impossible. Vas didn’t seem to pay his attitude any mind, not that she ever did. He always found it easy to talk to her, whether it was a full conversation or small talk it just felt natural than trying to talk to other people for him. She also had a knack for reading him when he came in with a mood, which at least today wasn’t as amusing as it normally was.
He didn’t answer and only gave her a look, he didn’t want to bring up what was on his mind partly because he didn’t want to hear how he was in the wrong and also, he wasn’t even sure if he could even get the words out at this point. Surprisingly, however, Vas didn’t push him in either direction or merely agreed to the shots. It wasn’t the response he was expecting as any other of his friends would have pried the glass out of his hand and made him face his feelings. She asked what else she could bring him and he thought for a second, he hadn’t actually eaten anything that day as he wasn’t able to stomach anything in the morning and now he just wasn’t hungry. Rhys shook his head, ”No, just shots tonight.” It was rare for him nowadays to not eat anything here, but he wasn’t in the mood. ”Thanks.” He added, no need to be entirely rude.

Vasilia knew when she should, and shouldn't push people. Sometimes people need to be talked off a ledge. Other times? Well, they just needed to talk themselves down. Tonight felt like a "talk himself down" sort of night for Rhys. If she tried to pry his thoughts from him he wouldn't respond well. Probably go to another pub that would leave him be, and drinking way to much. At least there she could keep a wary eye on him. Make sure he got whatever support he did want, and also drank responsibly. He gave her a look, clearly and silently stating he didn't want to talk, and she gave him a knowing and empathetic smile. Nah, she wouldn't pry. Not tonight. But at least he knew she'd be here, close by, if he needed. Whether he talked or not, he wasn't alone.
Vasilia nodded as he answered. Just shots. Definitely something was going on and he wasn't going to beat around the bushes. He wanted to get drunk and just get whatever it was out of his head. "You got it. I'll keep you topped off." She didn't think he'd like having to ask for shots all night, after all, he'd opened a tab. So, she'd just make sure if she saw him running low, she got him another. Until he told her to stop, or she saw he'd had enough. She moved to step away, to go back to work, but stopped, looking back at him with that soft expression. "And Rhys? I'm here. If you need anything." The way she'd spoken hadn't been as a pub owner, but instead a friend. She headed back to the bar, to let the bartenders and waitress know the plan. She'd keep an eye on his tab, and that they needed to make sure to keep it updated if he had them bring him anything. Also, to keep his whiskey topped off if he got low/empty. But to also double check with before giving him anything past a sixth shot so she could check how much he'd had/how his tolerance was holding up. Rhys had a high tolerance, but even he had a limit.

i just feel like I'm condemned to wear someone else's hell
December 17, 2025 vasilia abigail fortescue
It was nice that nobody was prying into his business and letting him drink, he had always thought that it wasn’t too much to ask but others in his life seemed to think overwise. That was why he had just kept to himself since going to Deva’s, he’d texted Maria enough that she wouldn’t be spooked from not hearing or seeing him, the last thing he absolutely needed now was an angry half-veela in his face burning whatever furniture was nearby because knowing her it would be his couch versus her own next time. Vas seemed to take the hint. He physically felt as bad as his mood and this was the only relief that he knew, a month or two ago he might have just shown up at Maria’s doorstep as an outlet but really, he was just sad. Rhys gave her a weak smile as she promised to funnel whiskey to him as needed and he was entirely grateful that one friend in his life understood just what he needed at that moment. Rhys drank half the whiskey that was in his glass and looked when she called his name. There was a different look in her face, her eyes and he merely nodded back before looking back at the whiskey in his hand.
They had become friends over their random conversations, when he’d met her it had been small talk but then the promised follow-up conversation about how he didn’t like chocolate had happened and he took his usual spot at the bar ever since. Rhys finished the remaining whiskey and set the glass down and just as promised, more shots appeared quickly, and he drank those as well. After a very quick couple of rounds he had been trying to remember how much he had drunk before he had gotten here but he was having trouble keeping the number straight in his mind. Everything had hit begun to him rather quickly an empty stomach, but he wasn’t feeling as numb as he had liked. Rhys didn’t talk to anyone and thankfully his demeanor might have given away he wasn’t exactly looking for company as nobody asked to sit at the table he was at. Not like the last time he had sat here trying to drink alone, then again, a certain future mother of his child had just taken the seat without asking.
He observed the people in the bar, some were sitting on their own and chatting with the other bartenders and some where with friends or who he assumed were their partners. The next round came and he quicky consumed those. There was a loud laugh from a man and he instinctively turned his head and saw that a man was laughing with Vas, just as he might have been if not for his current heartbreak. He continued to drink as the shots kept showing up as promised and he tried to file a reminder in the back of his mind to thank Vas for the uninterrupted pipeline that was rarely ever given to him this easily. But as he drank the last ones that came by, he noted the pause in the drinks coming but he was also close to the numb state he had desired. His thoughts had slowed down to something more tolerable though he couldn’t stop seeing Deva in his mind. All that anger he had earlier become something more internalized as he could only think about how awful he had been.
Leaning his elbow on the table he rubbed his eyes, which blurred his vision, and it took long than usual to come back to normal. But when it did, he saw the familiar red head in front of him. His eyes were unfocused but no longer dark, he couldn’t use his anger to hide his sadness in this state. He let out a sigh and looked at her again before looking back at a laughing couple he spotted a few tables down. ”You ever feel like……you mess up everything you do?” Rhys’ thoughts were scattered and his words a bit slurred.

The night wore on, and Vasilia made sure to keep an eye on Rhys and his tab. He didn't ask for anything throughout the night, just silently accepted the refills. His silence reinforced her earlier thoughts that something was deeply troubling him. At his sixth shot, the bartender let her know. Vas started to take his shots to him after that, to gauge how drunk he was. Hey, it might be a pub, but they always sold alcohol responsibly. Though, after the last shot... She had a very strong suspicion that he'd already done a bit of drinking before coming. So, instead of whiskey this time, she brought a large glass of water, setting it down in front of him and taking a moment to sit across from him, a slightly concerned look in her eyes. He didn't seem to notice her for a moment, his eyes out of focus from rubbing them. Then, he focused and she offered a small smile, sliding the water across the table to him.
Before she could say anything he'd looked away, sighed, and then spoke. It was... surprising. Rhys didn't talk first. He was the quiet, moody type. That sulked in silence. Her eyebrows raised a bit. His speaking also confirmed her suspicions. He was very drunk. More then he should have been with this many shots. "Yes," she answered slowly. The way he was looking at the couple... It almost made her wonder if someone had broken up with him, though he hadn't mentioned dating anyone during their conversations. "Do you want to talk about it?" She'd offered once before, at the beginning of the night, and then dropped it since. Now though... Well, now he just seemed like he needed someone's company.

December 17, 2025 vasilia abigail fortescue
Rhys glanced at the glass in front of him, it clearly wasn’t whiskey, but Vas pushed it toward him with a smile. He didn’t mind it for now, it wasn’t whiskey which meant it wasn’t going to help him try and forget everything. She responded to him, which he hadn’t expected, and he looked back at her for a second. Rhys was having trouble focusing on anything in particular, his eyes mostly looking rather dazed as he kept finding himself back in his own memories. There were good times, such good times. All the laughing and enjoying each other’s company, it made up for all the fighting and harsh words. But they had said things to each other this time that could not be unsaid, it still stung to think about it. ’Do you want to talk about it?’ Rhys turned his head about as fast as he could without ending up incredibly dizzy. But he didn’t answer right away, his brain couldn’t think where to start or even now. And not even what he’d managed to drink tonight could take away what pain he still felt.
”I messed up.” He managed, pausing again. Before he spoke again, he grabbed the glass of mystery liquid and took a sip. Water. He placed the glass back on the table displeased that it wasn’t something he considered helpful at the moment. There was an urge to talk to her, to Deva to go back and try and fix this. Hell, if she had a phone, he would have called her but she had always preferred writing and he wasn’t even sure if he could hold a quill at this point. ”She’ll probably never speak to me again, not this time.” He’d never felt like this after all the other fights and arguments and times they had yelled at each other. Even drunk he had to admit the truth. She was done, and he felt alone again. Rhys felt himself slump a bit more in his chair, most of his brain was thinking about Deva while the rest seemed to drag Maria into the mix as well. It was becoming a lot and hard to track though his focus wasn’t on whether Vas could follow his train of thought or not.

Honestly, if he didn't drink the water it wouldn't bother her. It was for his sake. He was going to have a very nasty hangover in the morning if he didn't start drinking water now. So, his drinking the water really didn't affect her in any way. But, she had come to consider this sullen man as a friend. If she could spare him at least some of the pain, why not at least try? She'd never seen him this drunk before, so she didn't know what sort of drunk he was. Though, if the current mood was a hint she'd guess he was one of those sad drunks.
It took him a long while to respond, but when he did, her eyes softened even more. Well, she'd already guessed that, considering the question he'd asked about her messing up. But what exactly had he messed up? He didn't explain immediately, taking a sip from the water though he didn't look to happy when he realized it was water, setting it back down. Then, the explanation. She'll never speak to him. So it was about a girl. Either way, something had happened between Rhys and this mysterious girl, and the way he'd said it made it seem like he felt he was entirely to blame for it. That he'd caused it, whatever it was that had happened between them. "This the first fight you've had with her?" She couldn't help but ask that first, as it could help determine just how serious the fight had been.

i just feel like I'm condemned to wear someone else's hell
December 17, 2025 vasilia abigail fortescue
Rhys didn’t want water. He wanted more whiskey but even then, he didn’t know what he wanted. There was such constant confusion on what his next move was supposed to be versus what he wanted to do. Actually, if he thought hard enough about it he couldn’t remember the last time someone had asked him if he was okay, his serious demeanor typically discouraged people from doing so and everybody in his life had gotten used to who they experienced and never really asked otherwise. Whether that troubled him or not had yet to be decided, though in general he had been avoiding anyone that might have noticed something different with him. Rhys shook his head, really could have laughed if he had wanted to. ”No.” He rubbed his eyes again, everything in his head was swimming. ”We fight all the time.” That was the truth and seemed like a pattern in his life. Rhys would fight with Deva and he’d fight with Maria but both ending in different ways.
Drinking this heavily always brought Rhys’ guard down and while he would drink to avoid what he was feeling or when he just wanted to sleep there was always a limit and tonight just as the previous night, he had surpassed it. ”You see.” He began, not realizing how slurred his words must have been but the story wasn’t going to explain itself. ”She wanted to be with me and she’s amazing, but I couldn’t.” He paused, looking away in thought for a few moments. ”So we fight……but she always came back to me.” Again he rubbed his eyes and then let his hand run through his hair, it was getting long again. Had his sober self met his very drunk current self he might have told him to shut up, but he couldn’t help it—even if saying it out loud made it more real. "Not anymore..." He mumbled.

Well... Vasilia wasn't sure if fighting all the time was a good thing, but at least it meant this wasn't the first fight between him and this girl. His girlfriend perhaps? She leaned her elbows on the table, still concerned by how much he was slurring already. He had definitely been drinking before coming to the pub, so he was much drunker then she'd anticipated. It was a good thing she'd decided to check on him when she did. He definitely wasn't getting more alcohol tonight. Tonight, he needed to get this off his chest, then sleep off the wicked hangover that would come. Still, he was talking, which was good. Getting it off his chest. Thankfully she'd gotten pretty good at understanding slurred speech.
As he explained the situation, her confusion grew. So, not a girlfriend? Well, she wanted that obviously, but Rhys didn't. He didn't hate her, just didn't want the commitment it seemed. Who knew the exact reason why though. But... well, it was obvious this fight had been different from the usual. It sounded like a pretty bad situation, to be honest. Whoever this girl was, always coming back, and him not wanting to be with her. "Sometimes bad things happen for the right reasons." Obviously, Rhys had feelings for this girl, but those feelings were clearly different then the girl's, and he couldn't reciprocate them. "But that doesn't make it hurt any less. She must be very important to you, otherwise it wouldn't hurt. But if you don't feel the same way about her that she feels about you, maybe it's a good thing to take a little time apart. Because otherwise you'll both just keep hurting each other."

i just feel like I'm condemned to wear someone else's hell
December 17, 2025 vasilia abigail fortescue
Even drunk with his guards down Rhys still would not have said so much to just anyone. There was a lot to his life that he could talk about but never did, many secrets that not even his siblings knew and facts he didn’t say because he didn’t want people’s pity. He thought about when he explained his nightmares to Sienna and she and Maria were the only people in the world that knew those details, but he trusted them with that, and he wasn’t concerned. Somehow, they still trusted one another even with all that had happened the past couple of months. Jamie would have questioned his use for the potions he was getting from the shop, Sienna held that secret as well. Rhys focused on what she was saying, and his very drunk brain took a few moments to comprehend the message that was somewhere in those words strung together. ”But-“ He turned more in his chair so that his body was facing hers in his seat. ”But I love her. I’m—I just drag her down…” His voice was softer. He knew what people had thought of him at school and what some thought of him now.
Stringing words together was a bit of a challenge, not that his thoughts were any clearer. There was an observation though, they just kept hurting each other and mistaking it for love. The downside of their familiarity. Rhys put his other elbow on the table and clasped his hands together and leaned his forehead on them, closing his eyes for a few seconds to regain the train of thought he had been trying to keep hold on. She had been so angry, so upset with him, tears streaming down her face. ”She was…hm…” Rhys opened his yes and crossed his arms again, a position that somehow always brought some comfort to him and every time he closed his eyes it was just reliving that last fight. ”She was so upset with me.” He fidgety without a drink in his hand to focus on. There was so much to this and he didn’t even know which direction to go in next. ”I was scared, so I went to her…” Rhys swallowed but his throat was dry, so he drank more of the water that was in front of him, it wasn’t whiskey but seemed to work for now.

Rhys wasn't the type to share. Not easily. Not like this. The combination of his severe intoxication and somewhat familiarity with Vasilia was probably what drove him to speak... Along with the desire to just get it off his chest. Some people just bottled things up. Kept things to themselves. Rhys was that sort of person. So was Vas' brother, Ilija, but thankfully Rhys wasn't quite as bad. Still, his sharing something like this was... nice. It also reminded Vas of her responsibility as the person listening to never betray his trust in what he was sharing. "There are different kinds of love." It really sounded like Rhys did love this girl, just not the same way she loved him.
He, thankfully, drank more water after much thinking and speaking. Vasilia smiled softly, hoping that it might be reassuring in his dark and depressing thoughts. "When we're scared, we go to people we trust. You must really trust her, and she must be important to you" She paused for a moment. "Do you still want her in your life?" It was an honest question. One mostly for him. He needed to decide how he wanted this girl in his life. Because clearly there was some communication issues going on.

The things he had gone through, experienced and seen stayed bottled up in his head most of the time. It was not uncommon in most Curse Breakers at the least the ones not looking for glory and their name in the Prophet for discovering some rare and exotic artifact—then again Rhys didn’t typically get along with them. Even before he had begun his career he had experienced enough in his life. How do you fix such damaged goods? Could you? Rhys tried to listen, looking at her helped him focus but he found himself distracted mainly by his own thoughts. She smiled at him, and that was another momentary distract. She was pretty and he did like talking to her, the one person he never seemed to get into an argument with and she asked him a question to which he quickly responded. ”Yes, I do.” And that was the truth, they had been great friends when it didn’t involve arguing or sex, he knew he needed her because she left void behind that he wasn’t sure he could handle for very long.
”I just couldn’t give her what she wanted.” Rhys thought out loud, he was recalling the fight still in his mind. He’d never promised anything to her as far as he could recall in his current state so naturally, he’d gotten upset that she still waited for it. Rhys drank a bit more water, he wasn’t sure if his throat felt tight because of how much he had drunk or because of his turbulent emotions. His thoughts didn’t feel linear and kept bouncing around, he had been scared and had gone to her and here he was now. Rhys rubbed his eyes again, even though it was a struggle to say what was on his mind he found that now that he had started talking it all seemed to want to come out. ”And she left me for some sailor or something and I was upset because she looked so happy and I never made her that happy and then she was upset and then I was upset because I was never supposed to be a father and I just feel like I mess things up every way I turn.” Rhys took a deep breath, he’d rambled all that based on what had been in his head at that moment and he sighed and drank a bit more water.
Rhys looked around the pub again, nobody was paying any attention to them though if they had he most likely would not have noticed. The couple he had seen earlier had left, though they were still in his mind as a reminder of what he seemed incapable of having. ”You uh—have anymore whiskey?”
