Dear Mr Fortescue
My name is Brígh O'Dalaigh and I am a seventh year Gryffindor at Hogwarts. I am very interested in the Cursebreaker Trainee programme. I was wondering if you could tell me a bit more about the entry requirements?
Thank you, Brígh

Hello Brigh,
You'll need an O.W.L. in Arithmancy since there is some banking and transaction involved in the job. For some of the more talented those aspects are at times expanded to others to finish, but you'd have to be quite exceptional to get that particular treatment. Apart from that N.E.W.T.s in DADA, Potions, transfigurations and charms are needed and Ancient runes would make for a very useful bonus. In fact, I'd advise against attempting to pursue the career without it.
This is merely in terms of grades. You'll have to consider suitability in terms of mental agility and fortitude as well as physical fitness. It's a dangerous job that comes with many challenges, both mental and physical. Before you set your heart and mind on becoming a curse breaker I'd advise you to talk to Renfri about the ugly side of the job. Glory and adventure might sound nice but too many in our field retire early for unpleasant reasons. Even if you wouldn't be so unfortunate you are likely to either meet less fortunatue individuals inflicted with some pretty dark and troublesome curses as well as see their effects for yourself. This job isn't for just anybody and if there is something else you're interested in pursuing I'd personally advise you to chose the other path.
Then again, it's entirely possible Renfri warned you I'm not the most positive individual in the field. In that case I hope you choose not to ignore my warnings completely but to be very careful in your considerations to pursue this field. It's exciting, but very dangerous.
If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask. While I can't share the stories of others, I'm willing to share my own tales. Just keep in mind I won't choose the happy ones since I do want you to know what you're getting yourself into.
Regards,
Ilija.

Hi Ilija,
Thanks for the advice, but I am pretty set on being a curse breaker. I know it will be hard and the risks will be high, but the only other career I've considered was being an auror. And unfortunately, I don't get on very well with law enforcement. I know it sounds silly but I don't want to be remembered for doing nothing at all - I want to do everything that I possibly can. I've had word from Irina Krum (not sure if you know her well, she was a few years above me in school) to speak to professor Selwyn and I will definitely do that.
What sort of missions do they send you on in terms of training? And why would you warn of potential curse breakers from the job? Did something in particular happen?
Yours, Brígh @ilija

Hello Brigh,
I suppose auror and curse breaker are both dangerous professions and I understand not being one for the law. I never really did consider becoming an auror, since I wanted to go out on advantures and explore the world. I don't think curse breakers get a lot of fame, although the job pays well. If you seek being remembered I'm not sure you're on the right track. You'll do something but it's at best blurring the lines between grave robbing and archeology, where you steal everything for something other than a museum. It's not exactly an honourable profession.
As for why? Yes, something did happen. It's a rather gruesome story, I must warn you, but the short version is that I lost somebody close to me on the job. On top of that multiple people that I care about got seriously injured up to the point they couldn't continue working as curse breakers. That's the tip of the iceberg, although I'd be willign to share more if you want to hear some of the more gruesomething things you might come to face. I could say I don't mean to discourage you, but that wouldn't be fully true. I just want to make sure that you don't head into this career unprepared. Not being ready for the things you might face could lead to your death, which I feel is something you ought to be aware of before you get started.
Either way, if you want the ugly tales I'm willing to share, if you wish. Just let me know and I'll write some of them down, although not in great detail. Should you indeed come to work for Gringotts I look forward to working together at some point or another. You sound like you've got spirit, which is always a welcome addition to the crew.
Regards,
Ilija

Dear Ilija,
Perhaps I was unclear. I don’t care about being remembered by the public just by those who already know me. I don’t want fame or glory just to do the right thing however I can. I am very sorry to hear of your losses. Has there been compensation or further training to new recruits to avoid these sorts of accidents?
I’ve always taken a keen interest in charms and I am not great at arithmancy but I do really love ancient runes. What made you initially decide to be a curse breaker? If you regret it, why don’t you leave?
Yours Brígh @ilija

Dear Brigh, There has been compensation of sort, yes. I got my leg for free, which was nice, I suppose. In terms of training the job is just dangerous and while we always do our best it's impossible to always anticipate every possible scenario. Even the most experienced curse breakers still get hurt and even they die at times. There is always a lot of exchange between the curse breakers themselves about experiences so that we might learn from each other as well as our own mistakes. Things that we survive can still teach others so that they might also survive. You never really stop learning in this field, unless you are trying to go for a speedy demise. What initially had me interested? The thrill and adventure that the job would bring. Getting to places others wouldn't see and also seeing a lot of different historical and cultural artefacts of the world. There is something very exciting about the job that just always pulled me in, even after my misfortunes hit. I don't regret my choice of career, I merely mourn and lament what I lost along the way. I wouldn't have changed my directory, merely the outcome of a single event. I wouldn't really know what to do with my life if it wasn't curse breaking. I suppose I could become a teacher, but that sort of career doesn't really suit me. If there is nothing to discover and no risk it sounds boring to me these days. If you do end up going for a career as curse breaker I hope it will treat you kinder than it has myself and most of my friends. Yet if you do I look forward to working with you at some point. Yours Truly, Ilija. BRÍGH ENNIS O'DALAIGH
