Beloved readers! We're sure you've all been eagerly awaiting the results of the poetry contest! Well, after what can only be hours of discussion several poems were selected to be the winners, although we've prepared a true highlight reel for the true fans of romantic poetry. Some simple and sweet but all of them swept us away with the beauty of their words. Well done to all the participants, but naturally there could only be one winner! We'll get to them last. First, a few that didn't win but caught our attention regardless.
Roses are red.
Violets are blue.
Happy Valentine's Day, Vonni.
From a Hufflepuff. (Guess who?)
This adorable little poem instantly caught our attention. While simple in nature it showed us that butterflies are still fluttering by in Hogwarts and our young readers are developing an early passion for true romantics. We hope our author can enjoy a truly mythical day at school with his sweetheart and we wish them the happiest of days. Luckily for the happy pair Valentine's Day falls on a Saturday this year, meaning they'll have more time to spend it together and school will not be getting between them this year!
The next poem is slightly more unorthdox, something that definitively captured the attention of our judges. The poem inspired us, so we didn't want to keep it from all our avid readers!
The digital age
Passes
Us
By
And yet I'm lost,
Drowning,
Thought my soul,
Was like the night
Sky.
Endless.
A void.
Paradise is closer now.
A missed connection.
Found.
You can call me
Anything.
As long as you call me.
We hope the author will receive that much awaited call from the woman that stole his heart. The judges loved the peculiar formatting and the non-traditional set up of the poem. Much like the new technology taking over our world, this poem also seems to bleed with longing. We hope this wonderful poem will give her enough incentive to pick up the phone and call our author, for he has definitively caught our hearts and attention with his deep and philosophical poem of love.
Now, the mysterious and foreign little poem we were sent next needed a little translation before we managed to understand it and see all the beauty of the words written. It reads like a beautiful romantic promise in the midst of the chaos of the world. Sometimes plain and simple is the way to go, as it allows the heart to speak. Now for those of us not so great with translating, the author was kind enough to send us the translation.
I will make you a promise.
I'm with you.
Maybe one day my English will be better.
One day, I'll tell you how much you mean to me.
Even when life is hard,
I'm with you.
Remember my promise.
Or, simply, I love you
Now isn't that one of the sweetest things you've ever read? Our judges were swooning at the sweet and gentle promise made and hope this happy couple will be able to enjoy the promise made this Valentines. If nothing else, we'll rooting for you!
Now we move on to our actual winners we're starting off with third place which was won by Astrid with her poem for Kalju. We were in awe of the romantic weaving of words in this poem but found ourselves chuckling in near despair by the end of it. Witty, romantic and filled with a good dose of humour, our judges loved this particular poem.
Light of the moon, artificial or not
Hearts on fire with just a single thought
The warmth of a flame glows inside me
Your face, your lips, you’re all I see
Beginning and middle and end
I’ll follow you I’ll never pretend
You’re so divine, I’m so glad you’re mine
A life with you would be much more than fine.
I’d treat you to the worlds best cookie
If in return you give me some nookie
Now we find ourselves hoping the recipient of this poem will be opting in for enjoying the world's best cookie and the happy couple can spend a fabulous day of love together. No doubt the author realised just how much the man she fell in love with loves her witty sense of humour. We can certainly imagine a great future ahead for a couple with such an amazing sense of humour, as the fun sparks of the very paper the poem was written on.
Second place goes to our much beloved Gilderoy Lockhart Jr. who managed to steal our hearts not only with his smile but also with his beautiful words of tribute. No doubt this beautiful ice angel of his will melt at his very words like we did!
Oh angel who took to the ice with such grace.
Every spin and jump my heart only picked up pace.
Lost in your beauty and golden locks of hair.
Yet there was so much more that caused me to stare.
I’ve never been a thief, to take what one might miss.
But if I could, I desire to steal only but your kiss.
They days we can only write or text can be painful.
As they only make me want you see you more, my ice Angel.
As you can see Gilderoy managed to write a most beautiful poem for his special somebody. We can only assume she's as smitten with the young auror in training as we are and that the couple will soon be able to do more than write each other to share that precious kiss he's asked for. Imagine finding out the young Lockhart is your secret admirer! We'd just die! Wouldn't you?
Now it took precious discussion to decide which poem would win first place. There was one in particular that every judge loved and felt deserved at the very least a place in the top three. In the end this beautiful ode written by a woman named Deva has won our hearts and without a doubt will make the heart of her man flutter just as much.
I've sailed the seas
I've missed the shores
I've felt the breeze that brought me home
Yet none of it compares to you
Or any of the things you do
I've known the rules
I've played it safe
I've taken risks I shouldn't take
Yet none of it compares to you
Or any of the things you do
With you I'm safe
And free from harm
No better place where I belong
My heart and future I would give
To be part of the life you live
I love you dear
In every way
There is no place i'd rather stay
So hear the words I say to you
You are my wish that has come true
I love you now
Forever more
Like no love that I've known before
It's you I never want to be without
I'll love you till my time runs out
Now this poem reads like a song, even if we don't know the melody. When we reached out to the young woman we didn't manage to reach her for comment on her victory but a close personal friend ensured us that was only because our author is currently already departed for a short romantic holiday with the sailor she wrote the poem for. We can only hope that they have a long and romantic weekend together and can sneak in a moment to read about the victory their love has earned them. We sure stand in envy of the sweet words this sailor had written especially for him!
We hope that all our readers enjoy those displays of romantic word weaving as much as we did! Now if you're fast enough you might still have time to scribble a quick poem down for the one you love this Valentine's Day!
Let's celebrate the season of love together and make it a truly special day!
Happy Valentine's Day to everybody from Witch Weekly!
