Nearing Midnight, 15 May 2026
Great rumbles resounded from the crumbling castle that had once been Hogwarts. The bright orange-white flames reflected off Luna’s huge, wide eyes as she surveyed the damage from afar. She’d shaken Friday Weekly off with a begrudging ‘thanks’ for rescuing her from the Great Hall - and had spotted Simon and Claudia of all people leaving the grounds. Simon didn’t even spare her a second glance, and Luna was devastated to find how that affected her. Of course, she didn’t know the whole story, but nonetheless.
Sobs threatened to wrench through Luna as she scanned the crowd before her for her sisters and Evy. Luna, ever composed, never smiling, was on the verge of breaking down. Her face was smudged with soot, and blisters covered her arm from a close call with the fire that had broken out in the school. She pushed students and professors aside, the panic within her rising to a fever pitch. At last, she spotted Selene, and marched over to her twin. ”Phoebe?” asked Luna, keeping a slight distance between herself and Selene.
Suddenly, rage boiled up within Luna. Since childhood, Selene had been lauded for her ability to see glimpses of the future. And yet how could she not have seen this? Dozens and dozens of students perishing in the fire, the fact that such destruction could be rained down on the school. Luna knew she couldn’t control the visions, but her common sense had deserted her. ”Why didn’t you see it coming?!” exclaimed Luna, her voice rising hysterically. ”You could have seen it! You could have stopped it!” Tears streamed from her face, cutting tracks in the layer of ash on her face. ”People died here, Selene. And you could have given us a warning! I was paralysed until that Weekly boy saved me! Where were you? Where. Were. You?!”

Selene was an utter mess. She'd managed to get Phoebe out as the girl had been in the common room and well, she'd warned as many as she could along the way. She'd gotten Phoebe looked after as soon as they were within safe distance and had planned to go back for Luna. She knew that Newt had been out for his part time job so he was safe. Luna? She wasn't sure. She was too afraid to even try and see the future if that meant her sister or younger brother were dead. She'd found him of course, safe and sound and had asked people to bring him to Phoebe. She'd tried rushing back into the castle, in all honesty she had. It had taken three people to hold her back physically until they finally had a clear shot to stun her. At that point it was all too late. Either she was out, or she was dead. Selene feared the worst, but refused to try and find confirmation. She'd isolated herself at the corners and had gotten treatment for the injuries she'd gotten in her rush out and her attempt to go back in. By now she was scared and felt defeated, until she heard Luna's voice and relief washed over her. She was live and okay, for as far as that was possible. "Phoebe's okay. I got her out on time." Selene said in a broken and tired voice. "Same with our brother. He's with her." She added with her voice still rough from screaming as they tried to hold her back. It hurt, but at least her siblings were fine. Then the flood of words washed over her. Luna was blaming her for all of this? She felt her blood turn to ice as she felt angry at Luna for a change. She had never really fought her sister much, trying to understand and support her in stead. Well it seemed that was the wrong call. "Why didn't you see the fire get lit? There could have been time for you to herd at least a few more out. Why didn't you see the food get poisoned and stop yourself or others from eating it? Why do you expect me to do everything?" She shot back, furious. "Maybe it would have been easier if I had died in there so you could at least understand that I don't see everything. Could have chided whatever remnants they put in the floor from your high horse! I can't see everything! I can't be everywhere at once!" She said angrily. "Why don't you go find Phoebe and take your insecurities out on her rather than yelling at how useless you think I am! I would have died to get you out but all you care about is yourself and your precious career! The only reason you're really angry is because I didn't save your ass first! Well fuck you Luna! Go find a way to switch things around so I see the present and you see the future. I'm sure you'd have saved everybody like the fantastic paragon of goodness you really are!" Selene bit back at her, finally done in being patient. "Now leave me alone before I find a way to rid myself of your stupidity by joining the people I singlehandedly failed to save." She said in a softer and far more venomous tone of voice. Everything was her fault now, wasn't it? Well fine, if she was going to be like that, Selene didn't need her toxicity in her life. It was completely unfair for Luna to blame Selene like this. But Luna was past the point of logical thought, having spiralled downwards close to insanity. At the very least, everyone she loved - what? - was safe. Phoebe, their brother, Selene, Simon… Luna caught a glimpse of a flash of reddish brown hair that she knew was Evy. They were safe and alive. But the sudden revulsion and anger spurted out of Luna like hot lava, scorching everything it touched. Selene’s voice was scratchy, but Luna didn’t have the patience to find out why.
”By the time I would have seen it happening, it would have been too late! Just like with that damned train!” Luna shot back hotly. ”You’re supposed to see the future! You’re the one with the useful power!” she added angrily. ”Don’t try to turn this into a pity party, Saint Selene. You see more useful things than Phoebe and I. You should have seen this,” she added, wiping furiously at the tears that streaked down her face.
”Shut up!” screamed Luna, shoving Selene with all her might. ”All my life, I’ve had to live in the shadow of you and Phoebe. Never my own person. Always one of three. I wanted to stand out and you’re just jealous that I have better Quidditch career prospects than you. That’s the problem with being one of three - someone always gets shafted,” roared Luna. ”And now, you’ve been blessed with the power of foresight that somehow conveniently escapes you when it matters most.” Selene lowered her voice to a venomous hiss, and Luna rolled her eyes. ”Don’t give me that shit, Selene. You’re too saintly to off yourself,” she spat back. ”Besides, what would poor Phoebe do without you?” she added with a snarl. ”You think you’re too good for everyone then make excuses when things aren’t perfect. You can see the future - why not change things to work out better for you then?” Luna wasn’t making sense anymore, instead spiralling into hysterics. ”At least if you were gone, it would be easier to tell Phoebe and I apart!”

Of course Selene realised that Luna was most likely acting out due to being overwhelmed by everything but her sister always blamed her if things went badly and she was sick of it. Her sister had done the same after the incident on the train and it was shortsighted and unfair. Yet how many would agree with her? Wasn't her sister supposed to have her back? She didn't though, and she never had. She only ever had her own back. There it was, she was supposed to be the one with the useful power and her supposed failure at the train incident. The accusations and the blame. Then Luna shoved her and caused her to fall. She tried to break her fall but felt an uncomfortable crack in her wrist as she did. Not that she'd admit it to Luna. Biting through the pain she got up and listened to the new accusations of jealousy when all it seemed to be was some massive deflection of the jelousy that Luna felt over her perceived uselessness. "No worries, your career is as cemented as your beliefs are." Selene said in a bored tone. It stung to think of Phoebe but well, of course her sister would being that up. She squared her shoulders. "You're right. I'm not selfish enough to hurt five to please two." She said with a shrug. Simple math. She then looked at her sister. "Why didn't you use your powers to see how Phoebe was? Or to see where I was? Don't answer that though, as I couldn't possibly care less. I'm going to see if I can find some place to stay for summer where I won't have to deal with you. I'm sure that we can find other places to continue our future. With a bit of luck you'll never have to see me again, outside of exams." She said, realy to walk off, if her sister would allow it. She bit back the suggestion that she could make herself unique by taking out both her sisters because she didn't want to tempt her into murder, she just wanted to be alone somewhere. Luna had no answer for her triplet, and thankfully it seemed to be a rhetorical question. Instead, she glared hatefully at her mirror image, guilt curdling uncomfortably in her belly. She knew she was in the wrong - she knew it. But she wasn't the sort of person to apologise. "Good riddance," hissed Luna. And with that, Selene stalked off, leaving Luna feeling somehow worse than she had before. With a grunt of frustration, Luna turned and stomped the other way, keen to find Evy and ensure she was alright.
